She and those critters probably spent hours cleaning EVERY nook and cranny of that house in the hopes that they may let her stay, so that she will have a home.

I’m not saying women need to be dependent on men to feel safe and happy, and women should be raised to be confident and brave on their own. But as a working, single woman, i always thought it would be sooo nice to meet a man who not only loves me, but will happily support and protect me when needed most. • @PierzStyx
      @PierzStyx 7 місяців тому +3

@@Garcelle1987 , incorrect. There have been studies that show married men live five years longer than single men, likely because married men engage in less physically dangerous behaviors because they now have families to care for. Married women on average either live the same amount or one year less than single women, most likely because the only risky behavior most women regularly engage in is child birth, something married women tend to do more than single women. But, other studies have suggested that married men and women actually live 1 to 2 years longer than unmarried men and women. So which benefits more is debatable.
None of these studies actually measure *benefits* though, because a benefit like, "My children bring me greater happiness and meaning in life than chasing corporate greed," is hard to measure in a study. It depends entirely on when you talk to people and where they're at in their lives. Older married women report far less mental health problems, for example, while over half of single White women will be diagnosed with mental health problems.

@@mookchie First of all, the "14 year old" Snow White wasn't confirmed anywhere, it's just a rumour without any factual basis, neither within productions notes of the Disney version or the fairytale itself. It is literally baseless.
Secondly, while critique for the 1937 is always valid, most of it is either already dated and in many ways obsolete or doesn't fit into the setting of a LAR. If Disney thinks Snow White is problematic today, just scrape it like Song of the South; if not, then changing the beloved features is asinine. The controversy of the last weeks just exemplified the structural problems with Disney's LARs. Their classics are timeless despite their "flaws" (thats an nearly universal trait for common fairytales - the popular ones often have less dated elements within them and are therefore more practical in latter eras), so updating ruins the complete setting.

She was so sassy and she was essentially the leader of the house that she lived in with the dwarves and answered to NOBODY. Instead, they had to answer to her. The only times she was “helpless” was when she was chased out of her home (and if I remember correctly, she was about to give up and be helpless before deciding that she would actually get up and try to live on her own an make the best of the situation by herself) and when she was POISONED (unknowingly). Two things she COULDNT control. Any one of the princesses would be helpless in the same situation it’s not because she’s weak. Snow White is my favorite princess, especially because of her empathy. When the huntsman explains why he took her away from the castle, there’s a look on her face like, “what a horrible situation we are both in because of the queen.” When she finds the cottage, she assumes the people who live there are orphaned children because of the small furniture. Not only does she decide that she’ll cook and clean to earn a place to stay (skills she has because she was trafficked at the castle), but she wants to take care of orphans in the way she wanted to be cared for as an orphan herself. But the older films was shaped by a man who had to work hard to keep his company afloat during extremely rough times, so those stories featuring hard work and resilience make sense.

The only live action remakes that were good were 101 Dalmatians, Cinderella and the Jungle Book. The rest were all unnecessary cash grabs mixed with work garbage. Disney should've done a remake of Black Cauldron that actually followed all five books in the Chronicles of Prydain. But they only care about revisiting their formers successes now instead of innovating trying new things which is what Walt always did. To the end of his life Walt Disney was always pushing the technical envelope on what kind of story he could tell with animation and if he were alive today, he would ashamed and appalled by what his company has become.

17:55 I’d like to add onto the forest scene a little, because it has another layer of storytelling that nobody seems to talk about:
At the start of the scene, the 13 year old princess Snow White has just had a knife pulled on her by someone she (assumingely) trusted, who then proceeded to tell her that her own *stepmother* ordered him to kill her out of jealousy, and she must run away into the woods to hide. Despite being forced to live as a scullery maid, Snow White is still a princess who’s rarely-ever been outside the palace walls, and *never* on her own. Now she’s lost, in the woods, alone, with no idea where to go or what to do.
Keeping this in mind, Snow White doesn’t start seeing the creepy imagery until *after* she’s been spooked twice by normal things (first by an owl, then by a swarm of bats), only then does she see the twigs as fingers grabbing her skirt, and everything else becomes distorted and terrifying. This means that all that spooky imagery was just a product of Snow White’s trauma distorting her perception of reality.

This is also why Cinderella is a good Princess too... She's a surprisingly realistic depiction of a woman who has been abused all her life, but with a specific positive edge to her character. She's afraid, she's upset and angry, she believes so much in the idea that she will never escape her circumstances that her wish isn't to escape but to instead just have at least one night out where she can be happy (she never mentions the prince being what she wants). Heck, people seem to forget that she gets assaulted by her step sisters as her step mother just stands there!
And yet despite her horrible situation she's still kind and hard working. When she's given a way out of her circumstances she goes for it, she does everything she can to escape. And sure it was to a prince but this is a fairy tale from a time period where a woman on her own would have no chance in society so honestly that would have been her best shot.

Snow white has so much quality put into it like all of the classic disney films. People don't recognize the beauty of animation and film. When the movie was ever praised it was never about the gender steryotypes and about her being 14, It was always about that it was in colour, it had character, it had music. People dont praise it for those things. I don't think it being shown is even a problem in todays society when literally everything else is extremely feminist. The odd movie where there is a steryotypical representation won't make all little girls want to marry a prince, I was personally nore about the Hannah Montannah lifestyle as a kid as much as I watched Disney classics. I know what people mean but I really dont think it would have an effect on anyone and push gender steryotypes beacsue of the fact people think she's boring and stereotypical compared to the more modern princesses. Honestly Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora do not get enough credit! I literally wrote a paper on this for my Women's studies class and I will defend these three princesses forever! Modern audiences are quick to dismiss extremely feminine characters as "weak" in favor of "strong" characters. I'm by no means saying that we don't need more "strong" characters, but I don't see why we need to rip apart others who don't fit into today's strong mold. Modern society sees strong characters as possessing traits such as physical strength, intelligence, bravery, and reliability.
I loved Cinderella growing up, but because she was seen as a "weak" character in the 2000s, I was getting made fun of. Because I liked Cinderella, I must be weak by extension. The tearing down of these princesses mirrors the bigger issues of women tearing each other down and the devaluing of traits that have been typically seen as feminine.
Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora teach anyone important lessons about emotional strength, optimism, and kindness. Not only are these important lessons, but they should be on par with the lessons that Mulan, Tiana, and Moana teach. I love all Disney Princesses. They all have admirable traits. It's all-important.
Now, I'm not saying that you have to like all the Disney Princess. Because you don't and that's your preference. As long as you solely don't hate Aurora, Snow White, and Cinderella for displaying traditional 'weak' feminine traits. Or for their lack of traditional 'strong' masculine traits. After all, I love Cinderella, but I also love Belle and Tiana.
Feminity is not weak or bad, and Masculinity isn't either.
In life, there are different types of intelligence, and just like different types of intelligence, there are different types of strengths in life.
Kindness and optimism are just as important as bravery and leadership. I wish that more modern movies showcased this. I wished that more modern audiences recognized this.
I love this video so much!

I really like that you talked about the context of when Snow White was made. My grandparents were about ten when this movie came out (but they were very poor and probably never saw it). My grandpa fought in the American army during World War II while my grandmom was under Nazi occupation in Italy. We can make fun of the simplicity by today's standards, but this movie was something to lift people's spirits during a dark time. I've heard a lot of vague stories about what they went through and I can tell why they never go into detail. They're just awful memories.
And this is off topic, but I love the older Disney movies because I like love stories. Even if they're simple. I REALLY miss the princes. Especially the Beast. He's always been my favorite Disney character. 😊

Thank you for sharing, you really made a point.
I'm Italian, all my grandparents went through horrible times. One of my grandads (1923) was kept prisoner by nazis and eventually managed to escape, walking through 2 or 3 different nations, the other one (1932) suffered hunger with his family, being the older of 5 children. Same for his wife, my granny (1935). My other granny (1930) is the only one who doesn't have such awful memories just because she was among the children who were sent off by trains to escape from the upcoming war and hide in the countryside. She still had to look after his younger brothers at the age of 7, after her older sister died at something like 10, and she also wasn't allowed to read books, because they would keep her away from work.
How do people nowadays think that a generation like that could have the energy to think about self-identity, finding your way, or other "first world problems". Snow-white was the perfect movie and character to keep them going during those hard times.
Btw, my granny (the one who escaped as a child), used to read me classic fairytales all the time, so "old fashioned" Disney movies remind me of those illustrated fairytale books.
We also used to watch Anastasia together (yeah, not Disney, I know), and the Once upon a December tune still moves her to tears 💙

    • @insertwittyname5649

@@dianapohe I'm so sorry to hear they had to go through all that. My grandmother was lucky to not have anything bad happen DIRECTLY to her, but I know she saw a lot of death. She was raised on Isola di Liri (a really pretty mountain town) and said that the village men who wouldn't carry up supplies for the Nazis would be shot not question. That's how disposable life was. But she tries to tell me about the fun times she had more. Like how her sister would climb trees to get figs for breakfast and my grandmom was too scared. Or how her grandpa would keep interrupting the rosary to ask if his favorite donkey was locked up safe so his wife would just pray in an angry voice 😆 She loved stuff like that.
And that's why I can't get mad at that generation for not caring about identity problems either. They were busy enough just trying to survive. Sometimes it makes me cringe that I was only less than a hundred years off from living like that myself.

You can see that in the rise of the 2000's pink girly aesthetic, lolita fashion and their love for dresses and vintage clothing, but in personality too as I see way more girls proud to be girly. Absolutely. Feminism is supposed to be about choice. If ur happiness is genuinely cooking, cleaning and taking care of others, finding true love and having children, then that is absolutely fine and equally important to ruling, leadership and creating change, for example. Plus if you look closely, these princesses do present tougher qualities and leadership potential at times, it's just very lightly touched on, ie. Sleeping beauty agreeing to being a princess despite her initial breakdown (which is understandable).

The first time the Queen tried to have her killed through the Huntsman, she didn't just stand around and wait for someone to rescue her. She immediately fled from the danger and went looking for a place where her would-be killer couldn't find her. And all the while, she remained hopeful and optimistic that she'll live a normal life without fear again someday. If that's not strength, I don't know what is.

Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are my favorite Disney princess movies. Similar to the incredible points made in this video, Sleeping Beauty has always felt like a survival tale to me. A young girl overcoming a life of deception but still finding the ability to trust and love those who show *her* respect and honesty. She is powerless in the movie, the arc revolves around her finding what she wants for herself despite her agency being taken away from her. The dynamic between Prince Phillip and Aurora is also the most empowering to me of all Disney princess romances. She doesn’t have to jump through hoops and climb mountains for him to respect and care for her, he just... does. He respects her as a human being, with human value, without her having to prove she’s worthy of it. Women shouldn’t have to do twice as much to prove that they have intrinsic human value. Maybe it’s idealistic, but it’s wonderful to see her prince treating her with so much worth. Sleeping beauty is idealistic. It’s a story of two lovers burdened by the mistakes, politics, and ego of their forebears finding love, trust, and respect in each other. Overcoming the things that may make them jaded and trapped in a world that does not support their free agency.
Having a partner that respects you, will fight for you, will stand by your side, etc. is not a negative or weak thing to strive for or achieve. That’s a powerful and lovely thing to have in life. Remember, Aurora hasn’t ever been allowed to want anything or know anybody. Falling in love with Prince Phillip is her finding her ability to want things for herself through the kindness of knowing somebody else

I think that's a good point that these princesses don't necessarily want a prince or fancy lifestyle, they want real love, and that's a beautiful thing, though I do think it's good to aspire to other things as well, which these girls do, it's just perhaps not always so obvious.
Something I've noticed with the more classic disney princesses as well is their stories feature true love saving or helping them, which to me means it's a very sacred form of love approved of and organised by heaven or something like that, so it's very special. The princes in these stories go to huge extremes to save or help them I.e. spending weeks, months or maybe even years trying to find them, scouring the country and going up against dragons, etc. If that isn't love (as well as extreme determination and bravery), I don't know what is and like you say, they are very romantic and respectful. It's a good thing not only to aspire to be with someone like that but to also try and be that way yourself.

We live in a time where nihilism is considered the norm. It plagues everything. We talk about realism all the time, and consider "good art" to be the closest to reality as possible. Snow White is about hope and dreams. It's an unrealistically positive answer to a dark desperate time, and that's why it's beautiful. I believe our nihilism is lowering the quality of our art. It's good to reflect our lives and experiences in media, but it doesn't mean stories with happily ever after endings, where the hero beats all odds and everyone is happy, are bad. If we believe hopes and dreams are stupid, we only keep building a dark, sad future.

Do people forget she’s a 13 year old girl? A teenager doesn’t always know what they truly want? I mean can we blame her for thinking about boys when she’s a little princess who doesn’t have the guidance of her parents. It comes to a point where she just wants to get a new life because her she’s being treated the opposite. For most girls to say she wants her prince is somewhat absurd but she is a princess. She identified her worth not by what her step mom thinks of her, but by the way she is. Her father passed away at such a young age I think what she wants the most is a man in her life to guide and support her and she’s at the age where she also starts to think about romance. However, she finds this in the dwarfs and would of most likely settled with them and forgotten taht she even wanted a prince.

I love that you mention Snow White and Grumpy having the real emotional arc. Honestly, Grumpy is my favorite character in the movie because of how much he goes from being gruff and unimpressed by Snow to feeling friendship, care, and ultimately being devastated by her death. It never feels rushed either, it feels like he just grew to like her. Snow White is a sweet character too, I like how kind she is to everyone she meets and how good she is with animals. That scene with the baby bird really pulls at the heartstrings when you take into account that he mama and papa are gone from her life and she still carries through and thinks of others.

I never understood why people said she didn’t have a personality, when I watched the movie I could easily understand it. To me she was sweet, gullible, optimistic, bubbly and caring. I never understood why people just said “Her personality is just cooking and cleaning!” because it was the opposite. Like she just seemed like she had a lot of personality to me. That’s just me though, just my opinion.

I also think Snow is underappreciated for her goodness. She loses her parents, has her title and wealth stripped from her, is treated like a servant and then the only family she has, the person who should love her the most tries to kill her and she ends up lost and alone in a forest with nothing. I don't know a single person who wouldn't be overcome with hate, anger, bitterness and resentment. But she chooses to forgive, stay kind and not let hate take root in her heart. She also never gives up hope for love and a better future despite the facts that she's lost, and no one knows where she is. That to me makes her the strongest person of all time.

I came back to this video to include how this movie helped me through both the passing of my grandfather and my great-grandfather.
I watched this movie all the time as a little girl in my grandparent's house, where I would stay every weekend. I loved it, even there were some parts that scared me (particularly the scene where Snow White is running through the forest). I remember telling him about how sad it made me when Grumpy cries and I asked him, "Why did he cry? He didn't even like Snow White at first!" and he giggled at me.
My grandfather passed away in April of 2019, and I was very lost about it. He was very sick from a culmination of illnesses that had lasted years. Yet, even as he struggled to go up and down stairs by himself and I witnessed his body misshaping itself, he always remained a figure of strength to me. In my head, I had always imagined him being there for every big moment of my life - my wedding, my college graduation, my first child (his first grandchild), and many others. It upset me greatly that he wouldn't see any of those milestones. A couple of months ago, I was taking care of my grandmother (his wife, she has fallen very sick as well), and I stayed up late watching Snow White. Watching the movie so late at night brought me right back to being six years old at my grandparent's house, being taken care of by them. I was a hyper child, so they always fell asleep before I did. As I sat there, watching Snow White so late at night, I burst into tears from remembering what it felt like for my grandfather to be right next to me. But I learned a valuable lesson from it. As Snow White was being led to the golden castle in the sky, it reminded me that my grandfather was watching over me and that he was very kind and good to me as a child. I cried both from how it hurt that he wasn't there, but more because I learned to be glad that I had such a good and kind grandfather in the first place. They say that you shouldn't be sad that it's over, but to be happy that it happened. That's what I'm doing now. So thanks Snow White, for teaching me how to move on. I will never watch that movie again without crying. :')

I think both Snow White and Cinderella are good examples of how emotional strength can make a strong person too. Both were abused by their 'families' but kept pushing through and were open & kind to those around them despite how difficult and nightmarish everything got- something that is really underestimated. When Elsa got scared she ran away and had to be dragged back in chains yet she's considered a stronger character because she's physically powerful and there's just more time focussed on emphasising her struggles. While the films of SW and Cinderella don't really hold up to today's social standards, the core of their personalities and resilience are still somethings to admire.

I think it takes a lot of internal strength to survive the sorts of childhoods and lives they lived while maintaining their ability to love, trust, show kindness, hope, etc. Idk what kind of agency people expect a young girl enslaved by a literal witch of a stepmother to have, honestly. Kids struggle every day under abusive parents (without magical powers) and you’d have to be pretty heartless to look at one and accuse them of not having enough agency to free themselves from their circumstances.

One thing about Snow White that I never hear anyone talking about is the possibility that she and the prince already knew each other prior to the start of the film and had been forcefully separated. Notice she says that she’s wishing “for the one I love.” Not “for someone to love.” My theory is that the prince and Snow White had been betrothed but when the king died, the evil queen separated them and hid Snow White in a different castle. The reason she runs from the prince when she first sees him is because she’s embarrassed for him to see her in her servant’s clothes. Anyway, that’s my little head cannon. Great video! I’ve always said that Snow White is one of the toughest and hardest working princesses and that her ability to find joy in difficult circumstances should be an example for all of us.

I also think it’s important to think about the context of the original story, which was told a long time before it was ever written down. The movie stayed pretty close to it.
The stories back then were often about someone who is weaker in society. Mostly children, young woman and the poor, being abused by someone with power. Often a family member or someone rich and powerful like a king/queen.
But in the end the victim wins, often through pure kindness and innocence because that’s how the world should be, but wasn’t.
Snow white was a 14 year old girl abused by her evil queen-stepmother and forced to dress in rags and be a servant, and the prince symbolized her freedom. She wished to be saved by love.
She was described as the ideal of innocence, beauty and kindness. She stayed kind even though her stepmother tried to have her killed and her heart (see the symbolism?) cut out.
She almost died because she helped an old sick lady, believing the best in a stranger even though she had been warned not to trust anyone. So kindness was also a weakness of hers.
But then she was woken up from death thanks to love and she was rewarded for her innocence and her goodness.
(Love the video, love snow white. She is stronger than people give her credit for. Liked and subscribed!)

I have NEVER had a problem with Snow White, she was a young child in a terrible condition that did her best to remain positive and kind. Her ending was questionable by today's standards but they were all the rage during her time. Cinderella remains my favorite Disney princess to this day and that will never change. As a child, I admired her for being an incredible person despite how cruel that world had been to her. None of that will ever change no matter how much they get criticized. Same I also admire Cinderella and her and Ariel were my two favorite princesses because of how relatable they were and how amazing they are as role models. Elsa as a princess is very bland to me. Cinderella and Ariel are just better princesses than Elsa because we get to spend time seeing what they want and who they are as a person. Elsa isn’t a great character and doesn’t do anything to make up for the fact that she was a horrible sister to Anna and just abandons her even further. Why does Elsa get praised while the first four Disney Princesses get hated on. Without Snow White Cinderella and Ariel Frozen wouldn’t exist. Snow White was the first animated movie Cinderella helped Disney stay afloat and Ariel rebirths Disney. Elsa isn’t on the level of Snow White Cinderella and Ariel she is far from it. Elsa is bland while Cinderella and Ariel have the personality Elsa wish she had. Cinderella and Ariel saved themselves and wanted something for themselves. Ariel and Cinderella remained kind when they were dealing with people destroying something they cared about.

@@greatamazing9620 I 100% agree ...I just couldn't get on the Frozen train...the two female characters terribly annoyed me. They felt like characters more than they did people (if that makes sense). Like yeah Elsa had a secret she was keeping and lost her parents but she became scared and sheltered, to me she had no personality. Cinderella also lost her parents and was basically under the control of a tyrant who mistreated her for YEARS but remained hopeful and pleasant and never lashed out at anyone, she was mature and caring. Ariel was curious and full of life, she was fun and creative despite being controlled by her father and constantly looked over by sebastian (not that I see either of them as bad guys, ik they just wanted to protect her)...despite her almost tragic ending she didn't take it out on anyone, she simply tried her best. These princesses are iconic for a reason...Elsa is only relevant because society loves the "I don't need a man, I am independent!" trope but that should never be a character's personality. Elsa just was not enough for me...she was an awful person for the majority of her movie and it pissed me off
