I tried to *brute* force my way through Nioh, that was very difficult. That was very *counter* intuitive style I went with. I don't fear the *feral* yokai anymore. Thanks, poofer.
Phantom - Reactive Counter (Parry) Feral - Counter State (Make the attack hit your yokai form) Brute- Proactive Counter (Interrupt) I'm already seeing instances where some counters are easier to perform on certain enemies than others.
@@Arnell_Mediocrity_Long That makes sense design wise since you'll gain the ability to shift guardian spirits without a shrine. Team Ninja probably intended players to have two different kinds of spirits so that we could use two different burst counters. This game is awesome.
Excellent guide! I can understand probably why they changed from the beta, because it arguably made Phantom's Burst too good. But remember how at least back in late last year's Nioh 2 beta, successfully blocking with Phantom made it so that it would do its spinning-blade counter attack, no matter what attack was used against it? You were pretty much able to stonewall anything, as long as you had the Anima, and it was so fun and stupid. Kinda miss it!
Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, I remember using the Phantom to basically block anything. It was pretty cool and I understand the reason for the change. However, I do wish Phantom got a little bit of a boost from its current state.
First we get the definitive Review of Nioh 2, now we get the definitive Guide to Burst Counters! Fantastic! It's comprehensive, clear, concise, and well thought out; this is just an all-around great tutorial. You've out done yourself again, Poofer!!
Great guide PooferLlama! I can confirm that brute also reduces the damage taken during the time it is active. Your guide was well orchestrated (which is rapidly becoming par for the course) and well thought out! Great job man!
I know this is old but you make really good videos. Detailed, clean explanations. I recently picked up Nioh 2 and your guides have been so useful on helping make up my mind and what skills really shine as bnb.
Thank you, I've been going bonkers trying to figure out why I was failing so frequently with the Feral one. It's cuz I've been using other directions. Plus it's neat to see your Phantom and Feral using the same horn combinations as mine
After watching this + a few minutes of screwing around with Burst Counters in the Training Grounds, it looks like: - Attacks that hit you still do Ki damage, though not sure if they can still guardbreak you yet - Against non-Burst grab attacks, Brute and Feral are both fully safe (Brute's even safe during the short wind-up to the swing), but Phantom doesn't stop it - Phantom's good against the training ground soldier's Iai Strike, which is nice, gonna have to keep that in mind
...I beat the entire game without using burst counters except once in a while using the Feral Dodge if I was out of ki, and let me tell you, it was a nightmare. I've started replaying it and I WISH I would've had this video back when the game first dropped 🙃
Hope you and you're wife have been doing well, Llama. Been noticing I've been going through burst attacks with feral burst counter and getting punished during the end of the counter animation. I knew I was missing something and had to watch this vid to find out only forward activates feral burst counter. Thanks for giving the best in-depth content and guides. Looking forward to any future content. Be well.
My absolute favorite spirit setup is Ho-Oh Confusion core Primary with Baku Corruption core secondary. The differences in their counters is still damn hard for me to get used to... I tend to fight most fights using Ho-Oh and only use Baku on human bosses. Which I guess makes some sense considering you can counter their Guardian Spirits.
Thanks about this detailed video :) and sorry for my poor English, I use google translate. I have been using Brute (shirohami) from the very beginning, but then I had to choose a second type because it is for fast burst attacks that require short response time and reflex ( lady osakabe's tenticle early difficulty one quick attack or later difficulty triple swings, ubume's burst grab etc.). As you mentioned, brute is slow and brute was not effective in burst attacks coming directly towards you (one eyed oni jump towards you or kamaitachi charge towords you) . I used phantom as the second type and it has saved my life many times. Recently I used "janomecho" Feral type GS to complete 50 yokai weapon toughts titles while farming ubume for scroll of the nioh and soul core in "scented letter" mission with corrupted weapon (dual swords), but many times I couldn't do Feral burst counter, sometimes I passed by near the attack ( ubume's air multiple claw attack) . Do we need to hold the left analog stick forward in the feral burst counter? I felt like I was manipulating in the wrong direction. Is just R2+O enough? Thanks. PS: As an attackwise, as a dual swords user, I liked feral very much. Just burst counter is finicky and made me feels bad.
The in game language makes you think they’re all interrupts. So I spent the first couple dozen hours in frustration wondering why they are inconsistent and I’m often dead. Been only using brute because it’s the only one that acts like the game explains like it should. Also been despising the whole burst counter system because of that. Really just wanted to go back to nioh 1. Thanks, this completely explained what the game failed to comunícate.
Yeah...it's a little annoying to swap Guardian Spirits but I've gotten used to it. Maybe TN will allow the option in a future update? Thanks for the kind words!
Hey bro I saw a lot of ppl on reddit saying if you don’t wanna do burst counters you don’t have to, like it’s just another option that you can do if you want, they just block or dodge instead of using burst counter, is this true? Can you beat the game without using burst counter?

I cannot stand burst counters. Feral and phantom suck. All feral is good for is extra dash distance. More like screwing up your counter positioning. Phantom has no active frames. Brute is the only one that I manage to get off. Although it's not worth investing Stat points into, cuz all it does is piss me off. Timely guard all the way, or just get out of the way. Best just to not risk it.
Feral can easily be used to escape attacks that are one-shot outside of burst counters, phantom completely negates an attack even if mistimed. They make bosses much easier to beat. Also, there isn't a stat that increases your burst counters?
It honestly depends on the situation. I've had instances where Brute is very clearly the easiest one to pull off. Enemies like the Koroka stand ZERO chance against Brute counters.
When you first start playing the game, Brute may very well be hardest. However, as you familiarize yourself with attack patterns and burst attacks brute slips into being the easiest because you know when to anticipate what you can counter. It's also fairly risky to attempt to burst counter any grab attacks since it requires strict spacing due to the start-up.
