I found a quartz rock with a gold vein up there once. It was on a river bank. We ended up with 2 oz of gold out of it. Also traces of silver and platinum. It was chipped with a pick axe and very old and weathered. I have searched the area and still am eluded by it's origin point. Was it dropped there from a pack mule or a was it next to the camp or cabin I may never know.

2 oz of gold from a chip sample doesn't fall out of a pack mules sack. Something that high grade could be particularly guarded. You either found the location of either intentionally buried sacks/samples, or, the actual source. I'd metal detect in that spot and slightly up grade using a disciplined grid system.

@@AEVMU I have. Found lots of trash and bullets. And last but not least the majority of rocks are magnetic and set off the detector too.

I've heard several different stories about the lost Cabin mine. The seven Swedish men maybe part of a black hills discovery near Spearfish SD in 1833-34. The State of Wyoming highway map that you can snag at any rest-stop in the state still has a red x located near Kaycee WY as historical location of the Lost Cabin. My father always thought it to be on Crazy Woman Creek. As for Jim Bridger the story goes he found gold on Beaver Creek while guiding the Sawyer Expedition in 1865. Got off his horse to drink from the Creek and saw gold lining the bed of the creek. Of course if that was true Jim Bridger wouldn't of settled down running a outpost south of modern day Green River WY. As for Father Desmet; I was told that the native knew where the gold was and that he told the natives to not let the whites know where it is or they'd see nothing but whites in the powder River hunting grounds. All good stories, but each might have some truth to it.

I think the first story one hears is probably closer to the truth than later stories. The longer the time the longer the tale. take care.
