Diesel Heater setup to heat the house.

  • 8kw Diesel heater supplied by a company called Vevor that I use to heat my three bedroom house. There was an 8" extractor fan in the kitchen I could temporarily remove to fit two 4" pipes through to the inside of the house, the heater itself is mounted on the outside which is under cover from a canopy we have at the back. Have it on setting number 4 most of time but sometimes as low as 2 with the fan speed increased.
Powered using a 12v car battery topped up regularly with a small car charger. It will run on battery for around 7-10 hours but it does use a fair few amps when the glow plug is lit on startup, after that it doesn't pull much at all...
Downstairs gets toasty in no time but takes about an hour or so before you can feel the heat upstairs. Came with 10ltr tank and having to use normal diesel but I do get about a week out of it for an average of 5-6 hours a night....
Usually pay £15-£18 to refill every week depending how much is left in the tank.

One quick thought, it is suggested that your exhaust should point downwards, or at least have a drain hole at its lowest point to drain away any condensation build-up that may sit in the pipe. 🤔

The exhaust needs to point at a downwards angle. It should also be kept at the standard length, or it may cause backpressure leaving your unit struggling to start. If the exhaust must be routed longer than recommended then the diameter of the exhaust must be increased to allow the gases to escape quicker.

They're designed to pull air from the room your heating. You pull in 4deg air in from outside to and heat upto say 50deg or you pull in 20deg air from inside and heat it 70deg+ there is around a 50deg increase and sucking cold air is only burning more fuel for less heat and making the heater work harder to keep up. This is about the best way to setup and still keep the unit outside, I have mine inside a cupboard with only the exhaust out the wall and yes it's noisier but efficient.

Depends on your situation and how much it costs to run your heater. If you live in a camper or something else that don't have these or Australia that don't have these then yeah it's cheaper. Mine runs about 2weeks on 20lt deisel and cost about 30 to 50c per hour to run and keep rather warm compared to my heat that cost upto 90c per hour and when you turn off its instant cold but the deisel heater is very dry hot heat like 70degC output and kept on low 1lt will last about 9hrs runtime.

What's an educated guess as to how this cost compares to a reverse cycle aircon heater? Assuming 5.5hrs/day * 7 days * (0.4*8kw) ~ 123 kw/hr of heating per week supplies by 10 litres of diesel.
Assuming an aircon would use ~34kw/hr of electricity to provide the same amount of hot air to the space, which would be cheaper?
In other words, what's the cost of diesel per litre and what's the electricity cost per kw/hr?
I like the indoor air in and out being so close but not facing the same direction, brilliant :)
Will be interesting to see how long the battery lasts. Lead acid batteries last longer the more time they spend closer to fully charged.
You can get plug-pack sized chargers that keep it floated at 13.6v, which are also handy for cars that spend longer than a week or two not be driven.
With a bit of luck, that charger will have a float mode or similar for the sake of less maintenance.

The generic 8kw chinese diesel heater running red diesel > on low is using around 130-135ml/h - and high setting is around 280-300ml/h if you have a 15L tank of red diesel, it will take around 50 hours for that to be completely empty running on max setting at 300ml/h.
And its hard to calculate an exact price since every runs different kinds of fuel.
Kerosine mixes, Central heating oil, used engine oil, used cooking oil, etc
Best mix id say would be used engine oil 40-60 with red diesel. You can buy red diesel from any BP station at the pump and its allowed to be run in your diesel heater. (United Kingdom)
Say you ran this heater for 5 hours a day for an entire week at maximum setting it would use 10.5 litres of fuel for the entire week. Which buying 100% red diesel with no free oil or anything mixed would cost £9 for the entire week 5 hours a day. Now if you 40-60 mix with free stuff you can get from mechanics, food restraunts etc, then it becomes maybe 60% less.

I bought a small car battery from Halfords and also a Ring waterproof smart 8 amp trickle charger from Argos for £45. It will be constantly on so I can just forget about it. I’m going to build a small waterproof wooden box type surround to house the heater unit, battery & charger. Having the heater outside will make it a little more ‘thirsty’ but only when it’s very cold out. Safety first though eh? I shall draw air from outside so that it is always fresh air entering the house, not re-circulated. A hole cut through the brickwork will have a plastic liner, slightly bigger circumference than the heat pipe. This is so I can remove it all, and put it in the garage in the summer months. The lining pipe in the brickwork capped off with a plastic cap. Hope this makes sense.

Not too sure about the car battery on charge on your worktop, and my guess is that your insurance company would agree with me. Some years ago I had a Land Rover battery on charge in my garage and I picked up an angle grinder to cut some mild steel (brain in neutral). The battery exploded with one hell of a bang, sending pieces of battery flying like shrapnel and covering me with diluted sulphuric acid. Fortunately I had my back to the battery. The next day, the clothes I had been wearing at the time fell to pieces. Lead acid batteries should always be charged in a well ventilated area.

    • @iandennis7836

Yes, an old style charger which puts iut 8 amps will cause the battery to gas as it approaches full charge......but not so much the case with a trickle ( i.e modern) charger. As I understand it, fully charge the battery before bringing it inside and then hook up the trickle charger. These units draw 8-10 amps while the unit is starting up but when the unit can maintain flame unaided by the glow plug the draw drops to about 1-1.5 amps. The cleverer ones can detect a falling battery voltage and initiate an auto shutdown as it is of VITAL importance that the unit goes through a full shutdown procedure to cool properly otherwise residual heat can cook the control circuit board.....this is a bad thing, as I'm sure everyone knows by now. Hope this helps everyone out there.
