- For those asking if you can use a diesel heater in the house, well the answer is yes...here's mine.

A couple of tips mate.... Wrap the heat output in tinfoil to reduce heat loss, and also the cold air intake needs to be inside as the heater is having to heat the air up from sub zero, it's much more optimal to ingest warmer air. Rest of it is good.
No, the air intake should be outside. Fresh air is important rather than recirculated air for reasons of condensation and pressure ....
Fresh air will contain more moisture than the air inside the house. The pressure does not change, it is blowing as much in as it is sucking out.
I’ve literally just put one in my 12 by 10 ft greenhouse for the winter, grow flowers ect ( not a cannabis stash) a 5 kw, it’s fabulous, on the lowest of 6 settings it keeps around 25 deg, will only use in coldest weather ( Frosts ect) but knowing it’s there is grand, got 12 v car battery on trickle charger to power start up, no problems, great tool, absolutely love it👍🥳🥳

@@samdub Been running a 5 kw diesel heater for for the last 4 months or so, grow chrysanthemums ect in my insulated greenhouse, I really like them, mainly run it on the lowest setting, keeps even the harshest frosts away, got an all in one kit,ready to run, no setting up apart from the power leads, they really can Chuck some heat out on the higher settings , excellent bits of kits👍
I've done similar in an emergency when my central furnace fan burned out. Worked great, not as warm as the furnace but kept indoor temp at around 65f with outdoor at 32f. 1800 square foot 2 level house.
Damn that’s not as bad as I was thinking. Just recently picked one up and never really got to do much with it as far as to cold weather least where I am. I’m still running the air in December. A very rarely use the heat.
At most just bump it on here and there and is about all.
But each year I do get a cold snap that may last a few solid days of real cold 2-3 times for least here. An figured it wouldn’t bump out enough heat. That maybe I could use it for a heat maintainer.
Or not running the electric heat as much I’m a little more sq.ft than that. But this place holds no cold or heat with a damn. An my electric bill is insane in the really hot months. An when it’s really cold them few days here and there there.
That electric heat is a killer an it brings havoc on my electric bill. But if you managed to get that out of that. I normally like it cool anyway I may be able to pull off damn near running just that. Least after the big heat warms everything. That seems like it may actually hold it.
But more so I picked it up for emergency heat to go with the solar generator. Due to my luck in general really isn’t worth a F. A that seemed like a cheap but decent insurance plan.
I have a 700 sf condo and bought an 8Kw model. Works great and costs far less than heating with electricity.

I am doing exactly the same project. I can't drill walls so I want to make a window opening and have both pipes and cables going that way. At the minute in the UK the electricity price is 34p per KWh comparing to about 18p for diesel heater. If you can get red diesel or heating oil it would be down to about 10p per KWh.
I'm sat in a room right now, with my other (smaller) diesel running...it'll probably run all day and costs around 12-20p per hour...splendid, good luck with yours
Heating with electricity is ridiculous when natural gas is 7p KWh
I hate to disagree with so many people commending you for such a great install.
Iust however ask. Where is the air getting into the box? Here i agree that you should draw it from inside the house. Not sure if you have any particular vent for it but regardless the biggest concern to me is that it may bring in the exhaust fumes. Secondly your exhaust pipe is not only likely to be feeding the box fumes but also dangerously close to your fuel tank. Wich as a thiird note seems to be halfhazardly upside down and leaking right beside that short exhaust...hope someone else has mentioned these things or that you are still alive to read this.
Nice job i have a similar setup as my emergency heating, mine uses about half a gallon in 12 hours. I made a duel chamber box with the heater in on side and the fuel tank in the other. I hope this setup will make sure the fuel in the tank/fuel line does not gel if it gets to cold. Slapped an air filter on the intake to stop dirt/dust/waspd etc and heat wrapped the pipes. I power it with mains and a battery so if power fails it will stay running, then again i am paranoid nowadays.

What fuel are u using and how many hours a day it on what does it cost per week and how many rooms it heat?
My mate has just fitted one to his boat which he lives on. It’s really good but doesn’t make all that noise you just hear fuel pump ticking. 🤷🏻♂️

I'm doing similar as a back up on case of power cuts, obv using a battery and solar from my solar powered shed, gas is still cheaper than diesel but i built it to keep a disabled pensioner warm just in case.

Hooking up to solar and batter is my next project...I run another in my conservatory where I work and that has a bigger box, so I can fit the battery in.
@@MarkIAnson i have a few on the go, garage, workshop camper ect, when i fit a replacement i usually get to keep the old one and TBH 8 out of 10 times they work fine after a service, i have a webasto, a mikuni and 2 ebers all free, i also have a few water heater ones from cars but they are harder to fix as they usually need canbus coms with the vehicle ECU to fire up, doable but costs time and money, I'm a freebie kinda guy 😁

Put holes in the Amazon box in case it over heats . Also if it rains out side the air intake will get wet so need to put that in a box with holes in but put bug mesh in side where the holes are . Put a extension on the exhaust so it from the house and slip it down wards and make sure the silencer is the right way there should be a hole at the bottom for the build up of water that end faces down . But it looks a great job . Well done 👍

Best to run it off a 12v leisure battery and charger so when the rolling power cuts come it will run all night without mains also I would put holes in the box outside for the air going into the house that is heated
Hello! Good video, I have the same for my apartment, but with an air intake from another room, so the circulation goes around the master bedroom and the bedroom across. For the noise, I've used a 100 mm insulated flexible aluminium pipe for the suction and impulsion, the length about 2 meters each side, it will dampen the noise a lot. But you'll have to change the turbine settings to its maximum at 5500rpm, thus the extra pipe bending will reduce the air flow. And it doesn't affect the burn control.

Interesting setup, the forced air intake will probably use some extra fuel but is probably a good idea as you'll have very dry heat, removing any moisture problems.

Mark, aquestion: There are a number of videos in YT warning us about loss of 12v power to the Heater and burnt out circuit boards! I'm wondering obout running the 12v power supply through a battery and then onto the heater? That way if the mains fails, the battery will pickup the load automatically? And will last days while the mains is restored? Any thoughts? S
Yes, that's another way of doing it...I have three and haven't had a power outage so, haven't bothered
Just a thought, and obviously it's not a 'fit' for everyone, most people won't fancy, or be able to drill a hole through a wall, BUT don't forget many people already have one,,,the 'exhaust/vent' for the clothes dryer.
Yes I know, it's winter and the time of year when the dryer is used, but I wonder how many people have ditched the dryer re the cost of electricity
I like it, I would change the hose going in the house to a galvanized pipe and cut to size, the shorter the better. Don't forget to insulate around the pipe,. Now your power supply is big enough to charge a few batteries add a 1500w inverter or bigger to it to run your fridge and freezer in a power failure

Red diesel so it's cheaper to run...totally legal for home heating.

We have one to warm part of our house and it's great especially when we have a power cut as we have a large 12 volt battery and a charger topping the battery up 24/7. great bit of kit but you must fit them properly especially the exhaust.
Heating oil works great (Kerosene) and we drop a bit of oil into each fill to keep the pump happy but we have seen that it isn't really needed.
I’ve been curious about these and the fuel supply. Is it gravity feed or is there a pump? I ask because I want to know if you could add larger fuel can to it. A Jerry can with a fuel line pulling fuel from the bottom of an upright fuel can. Upright to prevent leaking. If done right you could have a longer burn time with easy replacement of fuel cans.
On my other one, at the back of the house I'm using a HGV cab tank which is 40litres. They are pump fed.

I am seriously considering this Mark. I like the neat and professional job you have done. I have subscribed on this basis. I spent £436 for a strip down and service on my gas boiler. Then wating £10 a day heating our home. That £10 figure is not running the gas central heating 24/7. Just around 7 to 8 hours a day. And the house is still sodding cold in between times! Which brand of heater did you go for?

Yes, red diesel is totally legal to use for home heating and available from some BP garages at the pump. I've got a sponge plug that's cut to shape for the draft.

It's finished now, on another video...there's feed pipes attached through the box.

Thank you - must admit, I don't know, I've not hooked the remote up as the control is just sat on the wall in the room.
I did a similar setup for emergency but find we use it evenings and weekends as it's much warmer than electric heat. We have nights that drop to -15C here in Newfoundland and I keep our 1400 sq warm with just this running. THe local gas station sells furnace oil so it's much cheaper that buying diesel.
Same here, the electric heater doesn't seem to regulate as well as our diesel heater - furnace oil, I suspect is similar stuff,,,we call it heating oil and the diesel heaters seem happy running on it.
Hard to judge the size of the box from the video but is it the 420mm wide one or is it the 604mm wide one please?

There's a bit of burn off to start with. If it persists then check you'r pipes aren't resting on the exhaust.

You can yes. I've chosen this way because of fresh, hot air entering the house but, either way has its advantages.

I didn't see one the same on Amazon or eBay but saw a truck tool box that might work. It costs almost as much as the heater though.
If I was you I would turn that air filter the other way around to prevent any water getting in it and also if its a paper lined one ile mine was replaced it with a complete foil one or metal as the others are crap and will eventually fall to bits if outside like you have it.

A regular CH system is around 20w-30w - these are 5w - if your place is small, some run one upstairs and one downstairs...

I've done the same do you find yours has a funny smell like hot metal ? I've got carbon monoxide tester so it's not fumes
I had a smell for around two days which I guessed was paint or plastic burning off, then I realised my exhaust was too close to my ambient inlet so I moved them apart. The detector didn't go off either.

What amp fuse are you using from the mains plug to transformer please?
I use a 13a in the mains plug, although the heater draws 20a at start up, it drawing from the DC side, not the AC...so, a 13a in the AC is fine.

Few improvements, cold air feed should be from within the house, to be more efficient and then the warm air feed has to much length, you want that either closer to the wall or have extra insulation, your going to loose loads of heat because of them 2 factors, also maybe look at different fuel types, such as 5050 veg mix or used pile etc, but there's definitely room for improvement

The air intake tube which is outside the box is providing air to feed the flame. The air intake of your all-in-one has a fan to pull air across the heated metal fins, and into your house. Be very careful that the intake isn't carrying exhaust fumes into the home.

great idea but it depends on the economics - do you know the value of diesel it uses to produce x amount of heat?
I'm using it as a boost alongside the central heating not a replacement so, it's not used on full and not trying to heat the whole house.
Check out mark davies 5kw fuel test...if I remember correctly on the heaters lowest setting it used 2 and a half pints of fuel.
@@Deiseboi my webasto uses approximately 1.5 litres on mid settings over 8 hrs which I think is very economical.

if you want to make it blackout proof, put the power draw from a car battery and put a small charger on the battery from 230V

@@ArdEgberts plus exhaust fumes can find their way into the air intake, which can be lethal. They are designed so that the exhaust and intake portals are in separate enclosures...ie.. rooms/ areas
@@2904mossie I understand what you mean now - this is the run up video...once completed, the exhaust is on a separate side with the intake having an extended pipe so it's far enough away.
@@MarkIAnson these are more efficient if the air is taken from the interior and heated, then re circulated back inside. I would run air intake from the inside, as its intended use. in a van the unit would be inside the vehicle, the only air intake from outside would be the combustion intake and then the exhausted combustion waste gasses expelled outside. a lot of the energy your using is wasted, heating the cold air from outside the house, in winter this could be very cold, and would lower the potential heat entering your home considerably. I would consider insulating the intake and output flexy hoses as well. to retain maximum heat.
Air intake is facing the wrong way up mate, needs to be in a downward position to stock it sucking water in to the heater

If you ever have kids in the house, make SURE those exposed 240v screw terminals on the PSU are not accessible to little hands.(ie: stick it in a box)

How well do you trust the cheap Chinese manufacturer to ensure that the combustion products (Carbon Monoxide) don't mix with the hot output air, and get blown into your house?
There's four input/outputs to these - the intake for the burn chamber, the intake for the ambient air chamber, then exhaust for each - the chambers are separate and spaced well apart in operation. Plus add a carbon monoxide detector in the clean hot air output.

@@trevuser2007 I spaced them well apart...the exhaust is around 8 foot from the intake (outside) in the finished box...there's no marketing involved.
@@trevuser2007 This exact form design has been used in RVs and campers since the 1960's. The only reason they exist now so cheaply is because the German patent has expired. They are built exactly like those original heaters, but may not last as long. People are reporting they have used them at least 2 years without issues. There are some issues however, but solutions are easily found here on UA-cam.
Using the air intake with another duckt will recirculat & Get hotter & hotter & much quicker where the thermostat will work correctly.

There are some major problems with your set up my friend. The small black air intake is for combustion only! You need to vent your green box to allow air in so it will blow into the house without sucking up the exhaust. I didn’t see any exhaust pipe anywhere exiting your green box? It should be away from the door or windows. You could run the exhaust to stand pipe for a gutter without too much trouble. That will get the diesel exhaust up and away from any openings especially when the air is cold and damp. The idea of having the heater unit outside is good but,,,,,you will suck in all of the exhaust easily. Lastly is a carbon monoxide detector. This stuff is no joke and you can’t smell it but you will make yourself and anyone in the house very sick or worse if the heater doesn’t run properly. I hope you don’t mind my comments and thanks for sharing your video. Cheers
Where is the exhaust outlet ?
In this video the pipe isn't fitted yet, as it was test run...but, it goes on the right hand side and attached to the wall.
For more efficiency, add an air intake coming from the house so you're not starting with cold outside air.
Then do the safety thing of running an actual exhaust pipe round the corner so it's well away from the heater's air intake and you don't risk getting carbon monoxide (CO).
That makes about as much difference as farting !
And besides, cold air is better for combustion, it's why modern diesel engines have intercoolers
Some models offer two air intakes. One is for combustion and the other is for air to be heated and run into the house. If you pull in house air, which might be 60 degrees, the heated air going back to the house will be 60 degrees warmer than if you used outside air with a temperature of 0°. Try measuring the temperature of a hair dryer inside a 70 degree house, then take it outside and let it suck in zero degree air and remeasure.
Thats dumb. air intake should always be from outside not from the place you are heating..... both exhaust and intake are meant to be outside .. you talk utter bull.. Imagine having the intake inside my camper van... soon all the oxygen be depleted for the heater intake..

Hi the unit needs to be inside because it generates heat….. you’re losing a lot of heat …I suggest putting it inside in the box you made and an exhaust out of the wall ….this will increase the heat in your home ….preferably without the box… increasing more the heat

Search eBay for a 20a PC Supply - all PC's are actually 12v so it's a step down transformer from 240v to 12v

in regards to small inexpensive "diesel air heating" units, i have question, i simple hho system could make the system far far more cleaner, smaller, produce more heat, and use the same idea/technology we already have and be less expensive then a diesel system. simply replace the glow plug with a spark system, and install an a simple hho plate generator to produce the hho from electrical power. seems to me hho would be great it this type of heater. fuel on demand, ideas? thanks. nice setup u got!

It's around 20p an hour at full blast then slows down to 12p an hour when the room is being maintained.
Run the exhaust thru am old steam radiator, why waste 200 degree to the outside!
ull be needing a battery thats topped up while u have leccy to run it when the leccy goes out ! leave on trickle cahrge.. move all that outside too...
Dont let it run on full all time. And if it goes much on low temp to Long them ofen clugs up. So exos shud goes down hill all the way And not use muflet if not nessesery. Cos not much to clogh them up in exsos

Considering the cost of diesel fuel it seems like that would be a pretty expensive way to heat.

@@MarkIAnson yeah you're right I didn't think about that you can get some off-road diesel much cheaper for these heaters. I still think they're great for a backup heating source or camping. Propane is not only expensive it's just not convenient. They don't conveniently price it either you basically got to knock on doors and ask them how much they want. Then there's the big propane bottles to carry around. I thought about getting one of these for a long time but then it comes down to do I take a chance on a chinese-made one and hope it's okay or do I spend the big money to get one made in Germany that's high quality. You can buy these things for like $100 the Chinese ones. Maybe they're okay.
@@tolmie1141 I'm running three Chinese heaters and have done one of them for 3 years - the "cheapness" is in the exhaust, the silencer, some of the brackets are a bit flimsy, the pipe clips...just change those bits out and you're good to go.

Mate exhaust and air intake are too close together, beware of carbon monoxide going into the house.

If that's running and you have a power cut. Then say good bye to the heaters pcb. You should've used a battery and a battery charger for the power source.
PCB's cost virtually nothing and we haven't had a power cut since 1970.
Would it be cheaper / easier to avoid PCB fry (buying battery etc) or replace PCB if the mains goes off?

It can't as it's working using a 20a power supply.
I'd put a 4A resettable blade fuse on the power supply's 12v outlet :)
