    When I tested the LT reels at the fishing EXPO, I found the Ballistic to have significant resistance while free spinning. Much more than cheaper Shimano Sahara, or the cheaper Legalis LT for that matter. Isn't Magseal supposed to reduce resistance? How would you explain that drag on the Ballistic?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      +i_fish I don't like judging reels by the way they feel at shows. I know enough guys that work the booths and I know how the gear gets roughed up. The one I have is a bit more sluggish on the start up due to the seals and slightly due to the mag seal. Compared to the ballistic But it's barely noticeable. And lighter rotating than my Stella FI. I have all the new lt reels and all are very light rotation

    So for FRESHWATER only do you think the new Stradic Ci4+ would be okay? You told me to check into the Daiwa LT's on TackleTour, but I'm just spooked of them for some reason. I just cannot decide if I wanna move to the Sustain, because $300 is a bunch of money, really better spent on the new Bantam MGL...

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  Рік тому +1

      A few things to consider.....If you maintain your own gear.....good luck with magseal and monocoque....not easy....For shimano..you have to be very careful handling the hydrophobically coated parts as it sluffs of easily...and the shimano reels are fairly complex.....the ar clutch is a nightmare to reassemble if you remove it and it opens up... That said....X protect is not waterproof...mag seal is, until it isn't. The only compact fully sealed reels that I would consider "waterproof" are the Van stalls. Sustain vs certate.....boy do I like the certate, but I have the tools and the mag'goo.

      LOL....BG larger gear with larger teeth...all metal. No sealing...Heavier and larger sizes. That about sums it up.
      Funny story about finor. 20 years ago a co workers brother. Was involved in the sale of finor. Post sale they gave him a box of reels...He had no use for them and he gave them to me for a grand. Mostly prototypes. A pair of Primeos (which were sweet!) Some offshore trolling reels. Megalites, ahabs, Copper fly reels...about 20 reels.....I sold all but 3 :) Made about 15k when ebay first got popular :)

      The 3m 2 part spray would likely melt the paint....................................ask me how I know..............on the inside of of conventional reel sideplates to get water out the drain holes may prove helpful or around line roller bearings. Or possibly carefully applied under rotors

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +1

      Problem is.....what if it gets in the clutch.....greasing below you can run into issues during storage.....greasing above while it will act as a good barrier....will no doubt find it's way in...and then you need to dismantle the clutch and degrease it entirely. WHich sucks....and the hydrophobic coating would be done.

    It seems they can only make marginal improvements. when something can't be a fully closed or protected system, stuff will get in. I've yet to use a reel at any price where there aren't droplets of water inside when they're opened up. I wish i had a headlamp to attenrion seals better but that's gone. heh.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      LMAO....Nail on head. I feel the redesigned rotors with the bail springs moved from the line roller side to the opposite side is a bigger improvement. That way you can cut down on the weight entirely in the rotor and not throw more to counter balance it. There are quite a few fully sealed reels out now. As a surf junkie we screamed from mountain tops for sealed reels......fast forward 10 years later.....We now have tons of choices. It used to be VS, Saltiga z, mitchell nautil. Now there's a dozen. :)

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 6 років тому

      the first one that did okay for me was the Capricorn. It wasn't sealed but it had decent longevity in that environment and didn't have much plastic. i was sad when that was discontinued. It's a heavy ass reel but it was well made. I don't surf but I was always in awe of those 1 piece mega rods some use. I'd like to try it but it's not done where i go.

  • @danielbeavers8701
    @danielbeavers8701 5 років тому

    Hey!!! When i clean a reel should i use as little grease as possible? I have seen people say it can bog it down

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 років тому

      Excess grease will bog down a reel if it gets where it shouldn't.......grease on the main shaft running up and down through the pinion gear will slow it down quite a bit.......too much greases on the idlers that run the worm..or too much grease on the top and bototm of the worm will bog it down.....too much grease on a baitcaster can get in where the spool shaft goes through the pinoin and kill casting distance......At the same time...soem reels for the surf can be completely filled to the point of squeezing out the sides to protect against saltwater intrusion......but it makes the reel very stiff...but that's the penalty of making a 20$ garage sale found penn z a waterproof surf reel :)

      Best bang for the buck would be a Spheros or Saragosa SW. They are proven tanks. I loved the ones i had. But inshore for me may be different. I target bluefish and stripers. And gator blues in the teens and bass to 50lbs can beat up smaller reels pretty good. So i use reels 15 ounces and over. The Certate HD's are rock solid as well. But still...The Saragosa is a spectacular reel.

    Completely unrelated, but looking for your advice on my first bait caster reel. I'm eyeballing the Lews BB1 or something in that 150ish price range. All inshore S. Texas fishing with mostly 3.5 to 6 inch swim baits and 1 oz spoons. Any recommendations?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +1

      +AFORWW I haven't heard much on how the curados have held up in the salt but that's a great reel for some larger profile baits. Can't comment on the lews. One day I'll put some time on them. But I look at them like abu.. Pricey reels made by outside companies with their name on it. Inshore specific reels usually mean a few ball bearings that will resist corrosion a little bit longer but if you don't maintain your reels they'll rust like anything else and so will the anti reverse clutch. The tatulas and even the fuego CT are great as well. Great to learn on. For a first bc reel the easy on the fly of the daiwa mag might be a huge benefit. And help with the learning curve. A bottle of reel x from corrosion x should be used as well on bearings

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      You're welcome. I forgot about that. One other thing. Depending on your casting ability. A one ounce spoon can go 100 yards. With a cross wind upwards of 150 yards of line can pay out. Keep that in mind capacity wise.

    • @saltwaterrook4638
      @saltwaterrook4638 6 років тому

      Tackle Advisors That's one of the reasons I was leaning towards the BB1. Both of them have a larger spool. However, having never slung anything out on a bait caster I doubt I'll be chunking spoons like I do with my spinning rods.

    • @Hardballleather
      @Hardballleather 6 років тому

      @@saltwaterrook4638 What did you get? Are you fishing inshore only? Most s. Tex inshore are throwing 1/16 to 1/4 jigheads and soft plastics that really only get to 5 inches. The heaviest lure would be a popping cork or a corky

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      +MJDGator did I mention the single vs double in the vid? I have a head scratcher video wondering just what they were thinking removing it on the latest stradic sustain ci4 reels. As it's common on the older reels. Now they see it as a worthwhile feature on high end and SW. For high drags, braid, and constant ripping of jerk baits. I like it not filtering all that torque down to one piece of Cast metal

      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +2

      Lower end mag seal reels have rubber seals at the main shaft and hande. Mag seal at the ar clutch and sometimes the line roller. For all around effectiveness. Not dunking. I think mag seal is a bit better. Since it is a true seal.
      Problem is maintaining it. If you dont have the ferrofluid and you screw with it while servicing it. It's now no longer sealed. But it keeps water and debris out better. Shimanos X shield is better than mag seal. As it offers double lipped seals that fit pretty tight and have a bead of grease between the lips. It's very serviceable but found ounly on the Spheros on up. And heavier reels.
