Innards on this one seem to be considerably different from the Saltist you tore down in that comparison - is there a difference between it and the larger reels? From what I can tell, big difference between the main gear and the seals.
I am going down to Miami to do some kayak fishing and have 0 saltwater gear but want to get a decent saltwater combo for when I take trips like this. Do you think this reel would be a good place to start? Kind of feel like I might be better served by a bigger combo as far as an all around setup (like a BG 4000 or 4500 combo) but I'm really not sure as I have no idea about the world of saltwater. I would be using braid so that's a help with spool capacity.
Hi, i have been watching many of your videos here from New Zealand and its fantastic to get to see you explain the technology side of things on reels and the differet components each model uses. I was wondering if you can give me an idea of the quality on the 2016 Daiwa caldia 4000B or even some closure if its a good reel? I found a brand new one and its going for $350 nzd ( roughly $200 US). the spec sounds like its similar to a small saltist but without the price tag. now been a obsolete model. I lure fish mainly targeting NZ snappers. they are powerful fighters and can grow upto 30lb. I only use light tackle as i find it more rewarding landing them on light gear. The biggest problem i have with my reels as they get wet alot because i fish of a jetski out in the open. lots of sea spray and I've gone through BG3000 and shimno Nasci 2500 that either lock up on the main shaft after a few trips or near falling apart due to the strength of our snappers, especially the big ones that i hook up near in shallow reefs and kelp they just blow away the light weight Nasci. Your information would be much appreciated.

I've had bad luck with every spinning reel I've ever owned. ALL of them. and I've owned everything from siennas to stellas and certates. My latest issue is with my new daiwa luvias 2500h. super smooth when it was new. I've used it only 2 times in freshwater and it's noisey, the gears are rough and it's makes a crazy metal to metal sound that comes and goes. This is the second luvias I've had in 2 months. The first one did basically the same thing and I returned it for this one that was shipped to me directly from daiwa. I'll send you this reel if you want to open it up and do a video or something and figure out what's wrong with it. everyone says I'm crazy when I say that all spinning reels are overpriced junk, but I'm sticking with that opinion.
Old thread, but wanted to say thanks for your information and work. After watching your video on this reel, I bought the Back Bay 4000. Excellent reel, especially in this price range. I upgraded the bearings to sealed ABEC 7. Threw in some Krytox in the case and never looked back. I use 15lb super slick on it on a custom 7.5' medium power, fast action rod. The amazing part for me is the torque and ease of reeling larger spoons and other lures with considerable drag. Lures weighing 1 1/8oz +. Tight lines!

I'm curious how it'll hold up if they put it in a canal sized reel...At the moment.....they don't even offer a spinner without a zinc main gear outside the saltiga that comes in a canal sized reel.....weird right?! I just realized that...Certate only goes up to 4k

Unfortunately no I haven't....Tons of my friends have and spend weeks up there every year....But they're 100% striper junkies....For me..by the time the fishing heats up in your neck of the woods...I'm switching gears to night fishing in freshwater. I'll get up there eventually. I also need to get out ot block! Again...invites all the time...but I'm stubborn in my seasonal fishing patterns lol

Great tear down. With all the time spent engineering and developing this type of reel, it is disappointing that the main gear is aluminum not stainless, and that the other gear is cast alloy. My guess is that one would have to step up to Van Staal, IRT, Visser and similar high-end reels for all stainless gears, sealed & machined body. Although the Daiwa Back Bay seems to represent good value in a lightweight, balanced, attractive design ... the slightest salt intrusion left unattended will wreck the gears overnight. Tempting, but my money is on all stainless gears, fully waterproof seals, machined aircraft aluminum housing.
I've been thinking of a Ballistic LT 4000 for my Okuma Rockaway. And for a second this video had me really thinking this might also be a "reel" alternative. Then you gave line capacity and that killed that. This sounds like a good rockfish reel if not a surfcasting reel.
Being a recent subscriber, I haven't seen your vids till now, but man you put out some real and really helpful info! I've always been a freshwater baitcaster guy with a coupla spinners around but never got as proficient with them. Now, for whatever reason, I got the bug. Still, for freshwater only, but got it. Gonna be saving some noodling around time taking advantage of your obvious experience. Thanks!
Another awesome video! Being a Daiwa fan I have been loving your thoughts on the LT range. With Daiwa Australia being so far behind - we only have the Legalis, Exceler and the TD Sol III (not sure if this is available in the US) in the LT spinners, it is good seeing you take them apart and get your perspective on these reels. Will have to look out for this one... the Doogie Howser edition. Tight lines!
This doesn’t surprise me, Daiwa is killing it right now. I actually think the retrieve on the ballistic LT is very close to the Stella FI. The Ballistic seems to spin longer and easier but the Stella feels more powerful.
I've started putting some time in on the ballistic.....out of the box it's ok smooth...after some use it really has run in nicely. Noticed the same thing with the tatula...took some time to get all sorts of buttery...
Those polymer bushings @11:50 have caused me an annoying, cyclical, click (felt and heard) when reeling in line without a load (ie: reeling in something light weight like a sabiki). The problem started out of box, brand new, and continued for one-year until I packed the polymer bushings with grease. No click was felt when reeling in a lure or a fish or anything that creates resistance to reeling in line.
I bet Daiwa must save a ton of money by getting rid of the corrosion resistant ball bearings on the drive gear. Daiwa are you watching this? Please take out the CRBB from the Ballistic LT and regular Saltist! Your reels are so good! You don't need to put CRBB on any of your $200 reels!
The 4000 review brought me back here. Don't remember watching this one, but after witnessing the fawning over the 4000, and seeing the size comparison to the BG, I'm guessing this 3000 will be comparable in size to the BG2500. Really digging the screw in handle and smoothness of my BG, now I want one of these- Thanks Tackle Advisors👍
They pretty much all smooth when new .Through my experience it’s when u put on a lot of mileage on them is how I see the price range differ in longevity...
Barry Iwashita this is probably the last year i’ll buy a Daiwa reel. i owned the Procyon and the Saltist and after a few trips they feel like trash. My stradic has been through the ringer this year with spray, occasional dunking, and it’s at least smoother than the Daiwas.
Dude....that thing is sick!!!! I wore out gears on my stella fi's...so the difference in gears at least to me is meaningless....And it has the ultralight weight carbon rotor...which even the Stella FJ doesn't have......that goes a loooong way in how nice a reel fishes. Until i fish the 18 exist or stella fj..that's the reel to beat in that size..hands down
I was thinking about getting the Shimano Stradic ci4 until I watched this video. I mainly use baitcasters, but I do have 1 spinning reel and it's the 13 fishing creed gt. My buddy told me the Stradic was was smoother.
Please include a bail test. Daiwas may be good reels but some of them (especially the BG) have kind of weak bail mechs and I have had a few miss casts because of it. If you could just kinda flip it over and show us if the spring is strong or not and such it would be much apreciated.
I'm finding the bails on all the new lt's to be a very strong open and shut.. Have you ever tried rotaing the rotor by hand...until it rests up against the trip ramp? The issue usually occurs when you cast and the handle is able to turn and gain momnetum enough to trip the bail.
Saltist is just such a nice reel both inside and out I don’t dislike pens have a lot of battles and they great but I’m starting to turn into a Daiwa guy after I saw the quality stuff they are dropping check out the certate review he did I’d be willing to eat grilled cheese sandwiches for a month to buy it lol
Can i send you a reel to review? I have mostly diawa and shimano reels. But i just got a lews tournament pro. Omg!!!!!!! This reel blew me away. I hate to admit it but it puts my curado k to shame. The only thing i give the shimano is it feels a tiny bit more solid. Mostly in the handle . But every other category the lews tournament pro takes. It is the smoothest, farthest casting, multi taking reel i have ever used. Iam telling you this thing will shock you. I can send you mine to review. I put mine on a lews tp1 black rod. Together you have to remember you have something in you're hand there so lite. But I am telling you please review that reel. I promise you will be blown away! It will make you not want to put it down. A lot of people dont put oil on the drum break in these and complain it makes a noise. So maby you can exsplain that to the viewers as well. So they understand you have to read the directions so you know how to maintain it. Not all breaks are the same. Outstanding reel!!!!!!!
So I think I watched just about every egg-beater review you've put out the last few years and I kinda have an idea now what I need... I like to cast a lot. I throw plastics at Speckled Trout and some decent Redfish in the gulf every month or so from piers or jetties, but mainly will be fishing for bass here in the DFW ponds and lakes. I may soon get into kayak fishing too since The fish are deeper in the water during the summer. So i want a 3000ish-sized reel, that can withstand occasional salt water, that is more lightweight and finesse-y rather than brutally beefy, that is $100-$250. Here's the list in no particular order, maybe you can reccomend the best one to get? Even if not listed here I'm all ears. 1. Saltist Back Bay 3000lt 2. Penn Clash II 3000 3. Spinfisher VI 2500 4. Stradic FL 3000 5. Spheros SW 3000
Looks like a good list...Spinfisher i think may suit you best....can't deny it's a tank...and super easy to break down after a long day and suffering an accident in the wash or something like that....Watch the world record speed run of the battle 3...and that'll give you an idea of the spinfisher and how to get in.....super easy...
Hey thanks for all your time you put into your videos you are very helpful and informative. Also your sarcasm puts a good twist on everything when you sh** on a product. I have a couple of questions for you. If you don't mind to answer i would really appreciate it. In the past I have used mostly conventional reels because I done, trolling, jigging, wrecks, and bait from a boat. So I never owned many spinning reels execpt only 2 of the old PennSS's. They worked great for 20years and I never had to fix them once. But that's the way in the past and now Lately I been fishing from shore a lot more just for bass, fluke, and blues. I just bought the diawa bg 4000 this spring to fish peers and the beaches and I love it reel. I'm just curious though. Do you think the machined gear from the "back Bay or old bay", would fit in the the BG ? Like could it be a cheap up grade with different shims to fit into to a BG the same size class. I'm just asking you because I don't wanna be bothered with mag seals and the magnetic oil marketing junk. If my reel gets soaked or dunked after a trip, I take it part and clean it no big deal. Also I enjoyed you last reviews on the new Penn spinfishers. I'm most likely pick one up soon in a size up in the bailess. I have used only diawa and avet reels. I never been a fan of Shimano and I have lost all hope in Penn over the years but it's nice to see that old American company to be finally getting their act together again.
I would love to see a video on this compared to the Daiwa RG-AB. I picked one up over the weekend and it is INCREDIBLY smooth. If this one will last a lot longer, I may return the RG-AB and upgrade to this. Thoughts???
The gearing in this reel is a significant upgrade over the cast zinc found in every daiwa reel under this one. It also has mag seal which does prove helpful in keeping water and dust/ debris out of the ar clutch. and pinion bearings which will keep it running like new longer.. The back bay is a surprisingly good feeling reel. Leaps and bounds better in feel than the exceler and fuego lt's in comparison. Plus it's metal frame is rock solid under load.

thanks Vin, honestly....I think they shot their load for 2018.......could be wrong..but I'm not hearing anything freshwater related that hasn't already been announced..and the stradic sw isn't coming stateside...and the sustain is an aluminum ci4+ with 2 spool bearings and x protect.

I was looking at possibly picking up a lighter reel than the FK I purchased recently. What would you recommend when considering between the Tatula LT or the Ballistic LT. It seems the crowds are super impressed with diawa so I am thinking I will go with one and compare it with my stradic FK to get a sense of what I like from the different brands.
Please do a review on the new diawa tutula 200, I am looking to buy one for bigger swimbaits but want to make sure I'm making the right decision. Love your videos man. Not sure why you didn't do a review on them yet, super popular reels. Also I can't find a video of your review on the Abu Garcia ambassadors(c3/c4) and which ones you think are better etc. Again, it shocks me because you seem to be very thorough but never did a review of some of the most popular reels on the market. HOnestly.....Usually rain.....butI'll occassionally use corrosion x amzn.to/2GrPwEg on a rag or paper towel and wipe em down. And add a drop of oil on the line rollers. I'm not a fan of hose downs....For anodized conventionals sure...but for spinners......it just helps get salt where it shouldnt go.
Thank you so much for your detailed description. I knew it was more complex than just adjusting the star drag. I was literally surprised to hear you say that 15lbs. of drag would stop a 100 lb. fish. So a 10lb. drag would be adequate for a 65 lb. fish. Is that correct? I was contemplating a Daiwa Lexa bait casting reel with what I believe has approximately 22lb. of drag. Your thoughts, is this a bit overkill? The application is for northern pike maybe 20-25 lb. If so, could you recommend a similar reel. Thanks again, Tom Weaver
You're welcome....it's not as simple as that....especially with tuna..lol...if you let them rest..they recover....they're not like normal fish lol...they have a vascular system like a race horse....Hell their tongues have holes in them for steering :O And then you gotta factor in how much pressure you need to get the hook past the barb...so hook size then comes in. But for pike fishing 10lbs of drag is probably all you're going to fish at.....Grab a scale and tie off to a scale or a 10lb weight and see for yourself how strong 10lbs of drag really is. Not many freshwater rods can even lift that much pressure. The Lexa's are very nice reels for the money. I had 3 of their HD's I've been targeting pike the past few weeks myself.....2 bites..but it's early......And i use my regular bass reels. (blew out the gear set on a metanium 2 weeks ago on a hookset...argggghhhhh...literally swapped out to a brass gearset from aluminum 2 days ago)
What reel would you recommend (spinning) for jigging trout/flipping spoons in up to 220ft of water in the $200-$250 price range? I have an outgoing stradic FJ (2500) that I use mainly for smaller fishing due to line capacity. The lake trout we usually catch jigging are anywhere from 8-40lb so I figure I should have a decent amount of line at a decent rating. Obviously going with a braid. Mainly fishing Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
Hello, I heard you mention you have to move the handle seal if your crank with your right hand. Is this the case with the slammer 3 and spheros 6ksw? I have those reels and I'm left handed so I crank with my right. I have never moved a seal like that. Am I doing it wrong?
You could grease or oil the line roller bushings. Don't even have to remove the screw all the way And pop off the handle sideplate seal using your finger nail.....and add some grease under it as an additional barrier. If you want to get fancy.....put some grease in the cavity where the ar switch is..... Just simple preventative things. 2 mins worth of time in total... Internally..from what i've seen with the new daiwa reels...they're lubed very well from the factory
Do you think the main and pinion gears on the Back Bay would fit the BG & Saltist 2500/3000? I would love to get those gears into a Saltist 3000 (Love the Saltist's black with blue accents. Not too keen on the Back Bay's all black scheme). Looking at the specs of the Back Bay on the Daiwa website, it appears to actually be more comparable to the 2500 (same inches of line per turn) in spool size than the 3000.
So to be clear.. The Saltist does not have the machined gear seen in this reel?? And if not.. would the machined gear from this reel also work in a Saltist 3000 ?? Thanks for the vid!!
Hi Joseph. The blue and black saltist has the large cast zinc gear. NOT the machined alu gear found in the back bay. My guess if you were to experiment. YOu'd need the pinon and possibly the oscillation gear

I'm currently shopping for a new reel , my budget is in the range of 150-250$. Would you say that the Saltist LT has better value over the Tatula LT SS or the Ballistic LT over a long period of usage (i am planning on using and keeping this reel for a while). Oh and i will use this reel for walleye and northen pike in canada (clear water lake). Thanks for your video by the way , they are awesome.
Well, as the owner of two LT Tatula Sterlings and one LT Tatula 3000 they are ALL smother than my new Back Bay! Either you have a great sample or I have a dud? Mine has too much back play along with movement in and out on the handle not found on the others. The knob is fine with the handle to body in question. Thoughts?
Hmmm..that's interesting.....Out of the 4...back bay, tatula, ballistic, and sterling.....The back bay was noticeably more refined.....Stella / exsence tight....no slop at all...and silent...And that was brand new out of thebox...the other LT reels needed to be run in to smoothen out a bit....as i wasn't blown away in terms of their smoothness brand new out of the box. If there is any backplay......that has to do with poor main gear shimming....unless you can see the rotor turning backwards......if it's poorly shimmed it will wear very poorly....especially if jigging or fishing in a way you're constantly starting and stopping the retrieve forcefully
Hello, This reel is exactly the same as my daiwa blast 3500. After fighting a nice tuna for 4 hours, i noticed that the reeling changed a little bit. I opened and i didn't noticed anything waird except one bend metal whasher that pinion seats to. Can you help me?
From a new subscriber, I have a simple question. Is there a simple explanation of how much drag you need for what size fish? Primarily I think your applications are more saltwater. Mine however are all freshwater. Given all the other factors are correct, how do you determine drag settings? I recently just found your channel and it's very informative. Thank you.
Hey Tom, thanks man! There are soooooo many "old rules of thumb" when it comes down to setting drag.......you need to factor in how strong your connection is at your terminal end......how sturdy your reel is internally.......what your fishing for .....and the conditions...... :) But......with all those things considered......at the end of the day........it almost all comes down to the hookset... If you're blasting hooksets on 1lb bass from 10 feet away using broomstick bass rods with a buttoned down drag....You are really putting a ton of pressure on the knot....and sometimes that is needed...so for tight quarters "pull em out of the jungle can't give em an inch fishing" by all means....lock down your drag and don't pay attention to any numbers at all :) But for pretty much every other application. Set your drag so that on a hookset...you get a litte bit of slip.....and as long as you're not winching fish against heavy current.....if its a quality fish..you can back the drag off a tad. (i'm a drag fiddler even though the rule of thumb say don't touch the drag after you set it..and I seldom lose fish once pinned) If you have a scale...tie it off directly to your reel....and just pull at different drag settings...you'll find out just how much pressure 10lbs of drag really is. 15lbs of drag can stop 100lb tuna in short order...and can cut you pretty bad if using braid. I'll be putting out a video outlining all of that...as with todays drags, reels, and lines.....things have sort of changed. And keep in mind that when you set the hook with a baitcasting reel.....the teeth of the main and pinion gear bear the brunt of the pressure.....something to keep in mind
Metal frame......That's pretty much it off the top of my head. I've been fishing the 6k ballistics since the fall in the surf with an 11 foot tournament ballistic 2 - 8 ounce surf rod. the 24 ounce combined weight shocked me in that it turned into a daily driver. 6k ballistic lt = 4k saltiga / bg in size.
I noticed that you have Sustain. Yesterday i bought 4000XG and there is little play on the handle at the screw in part. Is it just mine or is it normal? I can feel it when reeling fast and i can move it left-right. Kinda same as you described on those handles without ball bearing. I haven't spool the reel yet due to possible warranty claim, but there is a chance i won't feel that play under load just like on Spheros where play is also noticable when reeling empty reel, but less than on Sustain.
Could this reel replace my nasci 3000, might need to start replacing parts on it soon, it gets dunked on the beach often, estuarine beach, light tackle, you couldn't describe anything i do as finesse.
If they added a side plate seal like in the saltiga and upped the sizes would this be a good competitor to the gosa? Think that’s a reel that daiwa doesn’t have anything that really goes head to head with effectively currently
Thanks Dylan.....They would have to do a little bit more for the saltist and even this one to compete with the gosa......The gosa is very heavily sealed......it's actually sealed better than the slammer 3....which was surprising.....and the slammer 3 is very well sealed. They'd need a bit more than a light boot seal at the handle.....and would have to cap off the mag seal plate a bit more effectively..(like they do on the saltiga) Then add the perimeter seal and the screwed down bearings compressing main gear axle seals....(like the gosa, slammer , saltiga) So it's a ways off from that level. :)
Tackle Advisors yeah I figured that it would take quite a bit. Love Daiwa but that saragosa is a sweeeeet reel. I do wish they would make one in a smaller size though. And I have to say that sealing on the saltiga is damn nice, I put that reel through quite a bit last season and it feels as good as new. I appreciate the reply

Do you know if this has the same spool as the Saltist 2500? The capacities are the same. I actually have the Saltist 3000 and love it. Wanted a smaller spool so I ordered a 2500 spool to see if it would fit, no bueno. Does the spool from the back bay fit on the standard 3000 saltist?

My latest issue is with my new daiwa luvias 2500h. super smooth when it was new. I've used it only 2 times in freshwater and it's noisey, the gears are rough and it's makes a crazy metal to metal sound that comes and goes. This is the second luvias I've had in 2 months. The first one did basically the same thing and I returned it for this one that was shipped to me directly from daiwa. I'll send you this reel if you want to open it up and do a video or something and figure out what's wrong with it. everyone says I'm crazy when I say that all spinning reels are overpriced junk, but I'm sticking with that opinion.

Old thread, but wanted to say thanks for your information and work. After watching your video on this reel, I bought the Back Bay 4000. Excellent reel, especially in this price range. I upgraded the bearings to sealed ABEC 7. Threw in some Krytox in the case and never looked back. I use 15lb super slick on it on a custom 7.5' medium power, fast action rod. The amazing part for me is the torque and ease of reeling larger spoons and other lures with considerable drag. Lures weighing 1 1/8oz +. Tight lines!

Unfortunately no I haven't....Tons of my friends have and spend weeks up there every year....But they're 100% striper junkies....For me..by the time the fishing heats up in your neck of the woods...I'm switching gears to night fishing in freshwater. I'll get up there eventually. I also need to get out ot block! Again...invites all the time...but I'm stubborn in my seasonal fishing patterns lol

Great tear down. With all the time spent engineering and developing this type of reel, it is disappointing that the main gear is aluminum not stainless, and that the other gear is cast alloy. My guess is that one would have to step up to Van Staal, IRT, Visser and similar high-end reels for all stainless gears, sealed & machined body. Although the Daiwa Back Bay seems to represent good value in a lightweight, balanced, attractive design ... the slightest salt intrusion left unattended will wreck the gears overnight. Tempting, but my money is on all stainless gears, fully waterproof seals, machined aircraft aluminum housing.
I've been thinking of a Ballistic LT 4000 for my Okuma Rockaway. And for a second this video had me really thinking this might also be a "reel" alternative. Then you gave line capacity and that killed that. This sounds like a good rockfish reel if not a surfcasting reel.

With Daiwa Australia being so far behind - we only have the Legalis, Exceler and the TD Sol III (not sure if this is available in the US) in the LT spinners, it is good seeing you take them apart and get your perspective on these reels. This doesn’t surprise me, Daiwa is killing it right now. I actually think the retrieve on the ballistic LT is very close to the Stella FI. The Ballistic seems to spin longer and easier but the Stella feels more powerful.
I've started putting some time in on the ballistic.....out of the box it's ok smooth...after some use it really has run in nicely. Noticed the same thing with the tatula...took some time to get all sorts of buttery...
Daiwa BG and Saltist are indeed killing it. Price/performance can't be beat.
Stella is a Lambo, Ballistic is a BMW 3 series
I liken the Stella to a range rover and the ballistic to a Toyota highlander :) video coming out today for the theory which is Lexus rx :)
Those polymer bushings @11:50 have caused me an annoying, cyclical, click (felt and heard) when reeling in line without a load (ie: reeling in something light weight like a sabiki). The problem started out of box, brand new, and continued for one-year until I packed the polymer bushings with grease. No click was felt when reeling in a lure or a fish or anything that creates resistance to reeling in line.
"VEGAN DRAG STACK!" HAHAHA! That one got me good.
I bet Daiwa must save a ton of money by getting rid of the corrosion resistant ball bearings on the drive gear.
Daiwa are you watching this? Please take out the CRBB from the Ballistic LT and regular Saltist! Your reels are so good! You don't need to put CRBB on any of your $200 reels!

Barry Iwashita this is probably the last year i’ll buy a Daiwa reel. i owned the Procyon and the Saltist and after a few trips they feel like trash. My stradic has been through the ringer this year with spray, occasional dunking, and it’s at least smoother than the Daiwas.

Dude....that thing is sick!!!! I wore out gears on my stella fi's...so the difference in gears at least to me is meaningless....And it has the ultralight weight carbon rotor...which even the Stella FJ doesn't have......that goes a loooong way in how nice a reel fishes. Until i fish the 18 exist or stella fj..that's the reel to beat in that size..hands down
I was thinking about getting the Shimano Stradic ci4 until I watched this video. I mainly use baitcasters, but I do have 1 spinning reel and it's the 13 fishing creed gt. My buddy told me the Stradic was was smoother.

Please include a bail test. Daiwas may be good reels but some of them (especially the BG) have kind of weak bail mechs and I have had a few miss casts because of it. If you could just kinda flip it over and show us if the spring is strong or not and such it would be much apreciated.
I'm finding the bails on all the new lt's to be a very strong open and shut.. Have you ever tried rotaing the rotor by hand...until it rests up against the trip ramp? The issue usually occurs when you cast and the handle is able to turn and gain momnetum enough to trip the bail.
Saltist is just such a nice reel both inside and out I don’t dislike pens have a lot of battles and they great but I’m starting to turn into a Daiwa guy after I saw the quality stuff they are dropping check out the certate review he did I’d be willing to eat grilled cheese sandwiches for a month to buy it lol

Can i send you a reel to review? I have mostly diawa and shimano reels. But i just got a lews tournament pro. Omg!!!!!!! This reel blew me away. I hate to admit it but it puts my curado k to shame. The only thing i give the shimano is it feels a tiny bit more solid. Mostly in the handle . But every other category the lews tournament pro takes. It is the smoothest, farthest casting, multi taking reel i have ever used. Iam telling you this thing will shock you. I can send you mine to review. I put mine on a lews tp1 black rod. Together you have to remember you have something in you're hand there so lite. But I am telling you please review that reel. I promise you will be blown away! It will make you not want to put it down. A lot of people dont put oil on the drum break in these and complain it makes a noise. So maby you can exsplain that to the viewers as well. So they understand you have to read the directions so you know how to maintain it. Not all breaks are the same. Outstanding reel!!!!!!!

So I think I watched just about every egg-beater review you've put out the last few years and I kinda have an idea now what I need...
I like to cast a lot. I throw plastics at Speckled Trout and some decent Redfish in the gulf every month or so from piers or jetties, but mainly will be fishing for bass here in the DFW ponds and lakes. I may soon get into kayak fishing too since The fish are deeper in the water during the summer.
So i want a 3000ish-sized reel, that can withstand occasional salt water, that is more lightweight and finesse-y rather than brutally beefy, that is $100-$250. Here's the list in no particular order, maybe you can reccomend the best one to get? Even if not listed here I'm all ears.
1. Saltist Back Bay 3000lt
2. Penn Clash II 3000
3. Spinfisher VI 2500
4. Stradic FL 3000
5. Spheros SW 3000
Looks like a good list...Spinfisher i think may suit you best....can't deny it's a tank...and super easy to break down after a long day and suffering an accident in the wash or something like that....Watch the world record speed run of the battle 3...and that'll give you an idea of the spinfisher and how to get in.....super easy...

Hey thanks for all your time you put into your videos you are very helpful and informative. Also your sarcasm puts a good twist on everything when you sh** on a product. I have a couple of questions for you. If you don't mind to answer i would really appreciate it.
In the past I have used mostly conventional reels because I done, trolling, jigging, wrecks, and bait from a boat. So I never owned many spinning reels execpt only 2 of the old PennSS's. They worked great for 20years and I never had to fix them once. But that's the way in the past and now Lately I been fishing from shore a lot more just for bass, fluke, and blues. I just bought the diawa bg 4000 this spring to fish peers and the beaches and I love it reel. I'm just curious though. Do you think the machined gear from the "back Bay or old bay", would fit in the the BG ? Like could it be a cheap up grade with different shims to fit into to a BG the same size class. I'm just asking you because I don't wanna be bothered with mag seals and the magnetic oil marketing junk. If my reel gets soaked or dunked after a trip, I take it part and clean it no big deal. Also I enjoyed you last reviews on the new Penn spinfishers. I'm most likely pick one up soon in a size up in the bailess. I have used only diawa and avet reels. I never been a fan of Shimano and I have lost all hope in Penn over the years but it's nice to see that old American company to be finally getting their act together again.
I would love to see a video on this compared to the Daiwa RG-AB. I picked one up over the weekend and it is INCREDIBLY smooth. If this one will last a lot longer, I may return the RG-AB and upgrade to this. Thoughts???
The gearing in this reel is a significant upgrade over the cast zinc found in every daiwa reel under this one. It also has mag seal which does prove helpful in keeping water and dust/ debris out of the ar clutch. and pinion bearings which will keep it running like new longer.. The back bay is a surprisingly good feeling reel. Leaps and bounds better in feel than the exceler and fuego lt's in comparison. Plus it's metal frame is rock solid under load.

I was looking at possibly picking up a lighter reel than the FK I purchased recently. What would you recommend when considering between the Tatula LT or the Ballistic LT. It seems the crowds are super impressed with diawa so I am thinking I will go with one and compare it with my stradic FK to get a sense of what I like from the different brands.
Please do a review on the new diawa tutula 200, I am looking to buy one for bigger swimbaits but want to make sure I'm making the right decision. Love your videos man. Not sure why you didn't do a review on them yet, super popular reels. Also I can't find a video of your review on the Abu Garcia ambassadors(c3/c4) and which ones you think are better etc. Again, it shocks me because you seem to be very thorough but never did a review of some of the most popular reels on the market. HOnestly.....Usually rain.....butI'll occassionally use corrosion x amzn.to/2GrPwEg on a rag or paper towel and wipe em down. And add a drop of oil on the line rollers. I'm not a fan of hose downs....For anodized conventionals sure...but for spinners......it just helps get salt where it shouldnt go.
Thank you so much for your detailed description. I knew it was more complex than just adjusting the star drag. I was literally surprised to hear you say that 15lbs. of drag would stop a 100 lb. fish. So a 10lb. drag would be adequate for a 65 lb. fish. Is that correct? I was contemplating a Daiwa Lexa bait casting reel with what I believe has approximately 22lb. of drag. Your thoughts, is this a bit overkill? The application is for northern pike maybe 20-25 lb. If so, could you recommend a similar reel. Thanks again, Tom Weaver
You're welcome....it's not as simple as that....especially with tuna..lol...if you let them rest..they recover....they're not like normal fish lol...they have a vascular system like a race horse....Hell their tongues have holes in them for steering :O
And then you gotta factor in how much pressure you need to get the hook past the barb...so hook size then comes in.
But for pike fishing 10lbs of drag is probably all you're going to fish at.....Grab a scale and tie off to a scale or a 10lb weight and see for yourself how strong 10lbs of drag really is. Not many freshwater rods can even lift that much pressure.
The Lexa's are very nice reels for the money. I had 3 of their HD's
I've been targeting pike the past few weeks myself.....2 bites..but it's early......And i use my regular bass reels. (blew out the gear set on a metanium 2 weeks ago on a hookset...argggghhhhh...literally swapped out to a brass gearset from aluminum 2 days ago)

What reel would you recommend (spinning) for jigging trout/flipping spoons in up to 220ft of water in the $200-$250 price range? I have an outgoing stradic FJ (2500) that I use mainly for smaller fishing due to line capacity. The lake trout we usually catch jigging are anywhere from 8-40lb so I figure I should have a decent amount of line at a decent rating. Obviously going with a braid.
Mainly fishing Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Hello, I heard you mention you have to move the handle seal if your crank with your right hand. Is this the case with the slammer 3 and spheros 6ksw? I have those reels and I'm left handed so I crank with my right. I have never moved a seal like that. Am I doing it wrong?
Any maintenance you have to do to this reel before using it
You could grease or oil the line roller bushings. Don't even have to remove the screw all the way
And pop off the handle sideplate seal using your finger nail.....and add some grease under it as an additional barrier.
If you want to get fancy.....put some grease in the cavity where the ar switch is.....
Just simple preventative things.

Do you think the main and pinion gears on the Back Bay would fit the BG & Saltist 2500/3000? I would love to get those gears into a Saltist 3000 (Love the Saltist's black with blue accents. Not too keen on the Back Bay's all black scheme). Looking at the specs of the Back Bay on the Daiwa website, it appears to actually be more comparable to the 2500 (same inches of line per turn) in spool size than the 3000.

Hi Joseph. The blue and black saltist has the large cast zinc gear. NOT the machined alu gear found in the back bay. My guess if you were to experiment. YOu'd need the pinon and possibly the oscillation gear

Would you say that the Saltist LT has better value over the Tatula LT SS or the Ballistic LT over a long period of usage (i am planning on using and keeping this reel for a while). Thats looks like CNC machines main gear. BG has cast metal not CNC machined.

Well, as the owner of two LT Tatula Sterlings and one LT Tatula 3000 they are ALL smother than my new Back Bay! Either you have a great sample or I have a dud? Mine has too much back play along with movement in and out on the handle not found on the others. The knob is fine with the handle to body in question. Thoughts?
Hmmm..that's interesting.....Out of the 4...back bay, tatula, ballistic, and sterling.....The back bay was noticeably more refined.....Stella / exsence tight....no slop at all...and silent...And that was brand new out of thebox...the other LT reels needed to be run in to smoothen out a bit....as i wasn't blown away in terms of their smoothness brand new out of the box. If there is any backplay......that has to do with poor main gear shimming....unless you can see the rotor turning backwards......if it's poorly shimmed it will wear very poorly....especially if jigging or fishing in a way you're constantly starting and stopping the retrieve forcefully
Hello, This reel is exactly the same as my daiwa blast 3500. After fighting a nice tuna for 4 hours, i noticed that the reeling changed a little bit. I opened and i didn't noticed anything waird except one bend metal whasher that pinion seats to. Can you help me?

From a new subscriber, I have a simple question. Is there a simple explanation of how much drag you need for what size fish? Primarily I think your applications are more saltwater. Mine however are all freshwater. Given all the other factors are correct, how do you determine drag settings? I recently just found your channel and it's very informative. Thank you.
Hey Tom, thanks man! There are soooooo many "old rules of thumb" when it comes down to setting drag.......you need to factor in how strong your connection is at your terminal end......how sturdy your reel is internally.......what your fishing for .....and the conditions...... :) But......with all those things considered......at the end of the day........it almost all comes down to the hookset... If you're blasting hooksets on 1lb bass from 10 feet away using broomstick bass rods with a buttoned down drag....You are really putting a ton of pressure on the knot....and sometimes that is needed...so for tight quarters "pull em out of the jungle can't give em an inch fishing" by all means....lock down your drag and don't pay attention to any numbers at all :)
But for pretty much every other application. Set your drag so that on a hookset...you get a litte bit of slip.....and as long as you're not winching fish against heavy current.....if its a quality fish..you can back the drag off a tad. (i'm a drag fiddler even though the rule of thumb say don't touch the drag after you set it..and I seldom lose fish once pinned)
If you have a scale...tie it off directly to your reel....and just pull at different drag settings...you'll find out just how much pressure 10lbs of drag really is. 15lbs of drag can stop 100lb tuna in short order...and can cut you pretty bad if using braid. I'll be putting out a video outlining all of that...as with todays drags, reels, and lines.....things have sort of changed. And keep in mind that when you set the hook with a baitcasting reel.....the teeth of the main and pinion gear bear the brunt of the pressure.....something to keep in mind

Metal frame......That's pretty much it off the top of my head. I've been fishing the 6k ballistics since the fall in the surf with an 11 foot tournament ballistic 2 - 8 ounce surf rod. the 24 ounce combined weight shocked me in that it turned into a daily driver. 6k ballistic lt = 4k saltiga / bg in size.
I do alot of wade fishing for speckle trout and reds. I was debating on the daiwa bg or the fuego lt. Or should step up to the saltist back bay?

None are wade proof,manual states that the reels should not be submerged in water

I noticed that you have Sustain. Yesterday i bought 4000XG and there is little play on the handle at the screw in part. Is it just mine or is it normal? I can feel it when reeling fast and i can move it left-right. Kinda same as you described on those handles without ball bearing. I haven't spool the reel yet due to possible warranty claim, but there is a chance i won't feel that play under load just like on Spheros where play is also noticable when reeling empty reel, but less than on Sustain.

If they added a side plate seal like in the saltiga and upped the sizes would this be a good competitor to the gosa? Think that’s a reel that daiwa doesn’t have anything that really goes head to head with effectively currently

Thanks Dylan.....They would have to do a little bit more for the saltist and even this one to compete with the gosa......The gosa is very heavily sealed......it's actually sealed better than the slammer 3....which was surprising.....and the slammer 3 is very well sealed. They'd need a bit more than a light boot seal at the handle.....and would have to cap off the mag seal plate a bit more effectively..(like they do on the saltiga)
Then add the perimeter seal and the screwed down bearings compressing main gear axle seals....(like the gosa, slammer , saltiga) So it's a ways off from that level. :)
Tackle Advisors yeah I figured that it would take quite a bit. Love Daiwa but that saragosa is a sweeeeet reel. I do wish they would make one in a smaller size though. And I have to say that sealing on the saltiga is damn nice, I put that reel through quite a bit last season and it feels as good as new. I appreciate the reply

Do you know if this has the same spool as the Saltist 2500? The capacities are the same. I actually have the Saltist 3000 and love it. Wanted a smaller spool so I ordered a 2500 spool to see if it would fit, no bueno. Does the spool from the back bay fit on the standard 3000 saltist?
Sorry Richard, I'm not sure. I only have a saltist 5000 to compare....and a bg and saltiga 4k...never saw a 2500 or standard saltist 3k in person.
