    Penn has gotten better over the years. This is good to see. Glad you conduct these tests to show the validity of a reel manufacturers claims. I owned a slammer V and it was the first serious reel I ever owned and it kicked ass. I'll be looking to get one of these come Christmas

    • @countdracula4656
      @countdracula4656 6 років тому

      And Rew based on what? The only thing that can suggest that is the fact they come of an assembly line in China giving way to inconsistencies. My own personal experience with Penn has yet to leave me with an issue

    • @countdracula4656
      @countdracula4656 6 років тому +1

      And Rew but they still catch fish right? Only until recently, you got what you pay for. But look at the BG by daiwa. The reel is 100 bucks and it performs like a 300 dollar reel. The tech in reels is getting cheaper to put in bargin priced reels lately. It's no shock that penn is making really good stuff lately, but youre seeing that in their 200+ dollar reels. Not super cheap, but not shimano prices either. But that being said, I have a penn clash 6000 that caught me 27 blackfins from 6 to 24 pounds over three jigging trips. Reel still works fine. Caught a 120 pound lemon shark on a 6500 Spinfisher V, landed it and the reel still worked fine.

    • @countdracula4656
      @countdracula4656 6 років тому

      And Rew my point is they started getting better again with the spinfisher v and the torque around 2012. When pure fishing bought them, they kept getting better year after year. Kind of hard for me to say they've gotten better only recently. I am aware several were coming of the line defective, but I've seen reels of all prices by all manufacturers faiI. But I caught fish on trips to the same extent everyone around me was when they were using shimanos, daiwas etc., and without issue.

    Just found your channel. Liked and subscribed immediately. Bought my first Penn reel, a 3500 Slammer 4 2 years ago. Line lay was awful from the outside and I had to remove all the washers to get the properly. Hope the Slammer is as tough as the reel in the video.

    My 8500 Spinfisher vi went overboard on my kayak offshore and dangled by my leader 4 feet underwater for about 15 seconds and it ended up totally full of saltwater and bricked a week later. Smelled like the sea when I cracked open the side plate and the insides were toast.
    I had been using the reel for 2 years at that point though so it was well worth the money.

    Thanks to teach us everything related to reels. Different reels to rule one thing, a fish. Some better than others with its weakness but at the end all of them are created to enjoy fishing.I understand that most people like us want to spent money wisely. At the end a better reel don't make us a better fisherman. Happy fishing!!

    My spinfisher 6 became almost unusable after taking it out on the kayak in the surf one time. It makes a horrible noise and feels like a $25 Walmart reel when you crank it. I’ve since upgraded to the slammer and I couldn’t be happier. It’s worth every penny extra.

    Thanks for another great vid! Looks pretty good to me. Penn has gotten better for sure and I think the slammer 3 definitely proved that. In the past I think my problems with them have been more quality control related. So if I can just cross my fingers and get a good batch of these I think it would hold up well in the salt. Thanks again for all the work you put into these videos! 👊👍

      The Slammer 3 is my next reel to cover me for 65 lb braid....I`ve been hearing most people who have one say it`s an awesome reel!...I have both Spinfishers and BGs and love them both...I didn`t however have very good luck with the Penn Battle 2...The gears stripped within a couple of years but in all fairness I also dropped this reel a few times in saltwater which is a big mistake...I was however able to get parts and it was reasonable.

    Could you do a casting test between a spinfisher and a same sized Longcast (Lc) spinfisher. Use the same type of line and rod. Id like to see how much actual distance you can gain because of the LC features, namely spool design and slow oscillation line lay. Is a LC reel really worth it or is it just hype? You’re just the guy to do a honest test.

      Added seal at the anti reverse one off switch. Worm gear oscillation with very slow oscillation identical to the ultegra. I don't know about the 4500 but the 6500 I have has brass gears. (standard spinfisher gets brass at 6500 as well). Metal rotor. It's really the only rugged surf long cast reel I've seen

    I recently bought the Penn 4500 VI Bailess and sampled a bunch of Penn SS VI reels over the counter and the gearing in them are very smooth equally to the Daiwa BG 4000 & 4500 reels I bought last summer, Penn defiantly improved the CNC gears in the new SSVI.
    I'm curious to know what's your take on the retainer cup that you couldn't remove to get at the pinion and lower bearing on this VI reel because I never had a problem with it working on all my Penn reels except my old Sargus that I used for a while and stopped using it and when I decided to open and maintain the reel the retaining cup was fused to the metal of the housing and I couldn't remove it, and I wound up scraping that old reel for parts.
    FYI, If it ain't broken don't fix it I'm not opening my new reels unless they need to be repaired in the future. Your autopsy breakdown videos have been a very helpful and a very insightful tool for maintaining all these reels, keep up the good work, THKS !

    • @franktheo2055

      @@morganahmed6245 I have the Penn Bailess 4500 reel it's not a bad reel and I bought it over the counter in 2018 @ my local bait & tackle store. The weak point is I wish the reel was a little bit bigger. It's not pervious to the elements and sand got caught up underneath of the rotor head it messed up the gearing. I changed the gears myself and it works okay now. As far as value & weight it's about the same as the Daiwa BG 4000, and the 4500 VI is a slightly smaller reel and as far as being water proof they're about the same, but the Penn is not as smooth as the Daiwa BG.
      The thing is every Penn reel I have ever bought on line that looked like a bargain wound up being a lemon where the reel that I bought what seemed to be a factory second and the gears weren't smooth and I replaced gears myself to make them work right. Buying a reel on line that might look like a bargain and may wind up being a lemon and a real hassle to repair. I recently purchased a NIB older model Penn Clash on sale this past February over the counter and it's smooth. My advice to you is not to buy a reel on line. When you go to your tackle store you can hold the reel in your hand and feel how the gearing feels when you crank it. When you see a reel for sale on eBay and read the posting by the seller that says New & Refurbished means he's selling refurbished factory seconds & returns for what you'd think is a bargain, but they're defective ! And you'll see the guy selling the same reels that aren't refurbished for the regular price. Beware, your best bet is even if you pay the regular price over the counter at least you know what you're getting on the spot and won't be disappointed. Be Well - Peace.

      The graphite rotor in the smaller sizes takes a bit of weight out of the rotor but the paint sucks.
      The gearing is pretty much the same on larger sizes.
      The drag on te slammer is more capable at higher pressures but the spinfisher can get much looser (slammer drag's lighters setting is around 2lbs where the spinfish is ounces)
      I'd go Spinfisher in smaller sizes slammer in larger

Gosa has a better AR clutch seal. And is a tad smoother. Well... Because shimano. But the larger spinfisher gets a metal rotor and brass main gearing.... Hi there, love you vids. Hey does the new spinfisher VI have the same weird pinion support as you show in the slammer 3 video? I am now worried as I have bought the 8500 model Slammer III, and I will be using it to catch large sharks. Should I have got the 10500 Slammer III? I heard you mention that the 9500/10500 slammer III has a better support (if that's the case, what supports it in the 2 largest models? I haven't spooled it up yet or used it so I could swap it for the 10500/9500. Would you suggest this size for large Amberjacks/Sharks/Groupers ?. Also is there any difference internally between the spinfisher VI & slammer III? I know they both have brass CNC cut gears etc. Also I have access to new old stock saltiga s-extreme (pre-mag sealed) in maroon/silver. You mention above they are waterproof? also would this be a good buy for $800 u.s.? Thank you for your help & awesome knowledge so much! David down under :)

    Hey, I thought the spinfisher VI has brass main gear? is the one you are showing not brass 'cos it is a pre-production demo reel maybe? also does the spinfisher VI have a brass oscillation gear ?(even though I know you said in slammer III vid it doesn't matter what that is made from) Cheers heaps again, David

    Hi There, recently discovered your channel and loving it! Can you comment on how well sealed tge longcast version of this reel is?

    • @MichaelJenkins86
      @MichaelJenkins86 6 років тому

      I'm from New Zealand and our westcoast, open sand, surf fishing for dimersals is best done by getting out on a distant sand bar and hiffing 5-6oz of lead on a 13-15' rod a long way with deadbait. So a longcast reel that can truely take a dunk on the way out to the sandbar is the thing everyone wants but no-one can really find... ...is it finally here?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Michael......it's a bit tricky....Mine lacked the hydrophobic coating found on this one.. I asked penn what was up and they said it should be there but it's likely missing due to it being pre production. Assuming it's supposed to be there.....The axle seals, perimeter seals and sealed bearings are the same throughout...the differnce is the shape of the top pinion bearing retainer cover......with a fancy perimeter seal up top there.....and the ani revers on off switch uses a flat rubber seal. So it's the most sealed LC reel we have seen stateside....It is a worm gear and lays line very nicely. It's more sealed than any shimano LC reel outside the Fliegen (which i'm not 100% sure on how they do it)
      But all that said.....all the other LC reels are carp reels....this is very obviously NOT..it's heavy and very overbuilt. No wirey handles or bails...thick main shaft and heavy gauge guts and internal support rods.....Great reel actually. Quite surprised

    • @MichaelJenkins86
      @MichaelJenkins86 6 років тому

      Tackle Advisors SOLD! Hahaha, many thanks for that run-down. The last spinfisher was the most watertight LC I know of (outside of a handful of top end JDM reels) and to see the improvement in this new generation is awesome, hopefully it's available here for our summer. Cheers!

      I think it's a great reel for the money. But the gosa is sealed to a higher level. Keeping the elements out equals longevity. It's an all round better reel. The spheros is the same reel minus dual drag stack and different bail wire.
