    Follow this link for a BBC interview with the Duke and Duchess on the occasion of this visit to England for the unveiling of the memorial to Queen Mary, their first official engagement in the United Kingdom since the abdication:
    Everyone says Wally was such a cow but even if she does look a bit like the Wicked Queen in "Snow White" in this clip it's quite clear that she was perfectly nice and that David's family didn't ignore her. How could they? She had all the jewellery! Mummy always said the royal gifts she herself had been proud to receive were nothing compared to the loads put around Wally's neck (but then Mummy could be bitter about Wally's 'eastern advantage.'). Ignore what people say. Cookie loved them both and always said she was glad that David got what he deserved!

    Queen Elizabeth never had personal animosity against her uncle and his wife, so she could easily manage a brief chat with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The Queen Mother on the other hand, probably wished that Queen Mary's monument could have toppled forward and flattened them!

    Here’s a thought: even had Edward VIII not given up the throne and assuming she married Wallis Simpson, they never had any child meaning the Queen would have still been the Queen just at a later date. In this case 1972, when Edward died. She would just be celebrating her golden jubilee in 2022 rather than platinum. And Queen Victoria would have still reigned the longest.

    There is another rendition of this occurrence in black and white on UA-cam, in which certain scenes are not omitted as they are in these. In that rendition you can clearly see the Queen and members of her family (like the Queen mother and the Duke of Gloucester) greeting the Duke and Duchess very cordially, shaking hands and kissing.

    "That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor by Anne Sebba. It's my understanding they are going to re-write History concerning a number of things that have been verified in that book. Wallis' closet friends state that after Edward abdicated Wallis was "stuck" with him because no other man of "means" would have her after that scandel. Wallis wrote letters to that effect to her girl-pals which they kept & allowed to be published.

    I'll probably get blasted for this and I am no fan of Wallis Simpson but it's a good thing she came along. Edward the VIII would have made a very poor king. George VI and Elizabeth saved the monarchy.

      It's a good thing Wallis Simpson came along because Edward the VIII was a Nazi-sympathizer. Why am I the only one mentioning this? I'm Canadian. Are you all British and embarrassed to admit he was? Hitler considered the Duke's abdication a loss for Nazi Germany.

    • @huascar66

      Apocalypse Plough The Duke of Windsor wasn't a "Nazi sympathizer". The Duke was a "German sympathizer", especially because in truth the entire Royal Family is more German than British. The Duke felt that Great Britain should avoid any interference in continental Europe's affairs, especially after the tremendous debacle of WWI, in which The Duke served. The Duke felt that it would be best to let Germany and the USSR "duke it out" since they represented the extremes of the political spectrum. The Duke believed that Germany and the USSR would destroy each other ultimately and allow the Allies to step in and divvy up the spoils. The Duchess on the other hand hated Britain for their ostracizing both The Duke and The Duchess of Windsor and the Royal Family's antipathy towards them.

    The Royal Family survived the Duke of Windsor mess . Thanks to the support and advice of proper and experienced Courtiers , mainly . Indeed and sadly true though are the words of a late senior Courtier and family friend when he said he spent more time saving them from themselves than actually attending to his official work . Today , without these “old fashioned” men of wisdom , experience and understanding of Monarchy , those men so dismissively referred to as “ the men with moustaches” , the RF has never been so shambolic and have finally landed themselves in such a terrible mess. That the Family and The Monarch were then and still are , so inept , constitutes a well kept or hidden secret , from at least the 1970s onwards . Appalling state of affairs . The House of Windsor , post war , continues to be an ever increasing disappointment . Is there no other better and more suitable House , branch to replace them ? I no longer can know .

Just to start you off, maybe look at how his brother was forced into becoming king, which was one of the things that led to his death at 56. Maybe look at his Nazi sympathy. Maybe look at how he lied to his brother and the government when he said he had no money, when he had millions. Maybe consider how he tried to force his way back into the country and a position of influence. Maybe look at how the Duchess was having an affair with the Nazi German ambassador at the same time as the king, to whose state papers she had access. Just hope this gives you an idea

    HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was entitled to a bow from every man and a curtsey from every woman, excepting the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Though not seen here, The Duchess did not curtsey to Queen Elizabeth - Windsor did bow; The Duchess did curtsey to the Queen. Clearly she was willing to honor the woman who was a child during the abdication; she was not willing to honor the QM. The Windsors had no class and no true beliefs - except what was best for themselves.

    @NuovoPiero I don't think Queen Mary's morganatic lineage was such an issue to Queen Victoria as it was to German royals. QV allowed her own daughter to marry a Battenberg.

    • @gidzmobug2323
      @gidzmobug2323 4 роки тому

      The idea of who was "morganatic" was only considered a big deal to a few royal houses: Russia, Germany and their Grand Ducal Houses, and Austria-Hungary.
      Victoria was not going to allow Beatrice (the youngest) to marry. Victoria finally allowed it, as long as Beatrice and her new spouse lived with her.
      Victoria also allowed another daughter (Louise) to marry a Scottish nobleman for much the same reason: to keep her nearby.

    • @clementjb
      @clementjb 4 роки тому

      @@gidzmobug2323 Except that German-speaking houses were the principal source of spouses for royals across Europe, and therefore a family had better kept its pedigree in order if it wanted to continue intermarrying. Furthermore, the shared "royal culture" was largely led by German-speaking families, especially after 1789, so even if morganatic marriages didn't exist legally in a given country, the attitude of the actual royal people was often quite opposed to them.

    • @gidzmobug2323
      @gidzmobug2323 4 роки тому

      @@clementjb Yes--they German Houses were the source of spouses--for Protestant spouses. The Act of Settlement forbade marriages of BRF members to Roman Catholics. The penalty for such a marriage was forfeiture of succession rights. Victoria Eugenie (Beatrice's daughter) lost her rights when she married Alfonso XIII of Spain.
      The UK law has since been amended: a family member can now be married to a Roman Catholic with no repercussions. But they cannot convert to the Roman Church.

    To Burma Boxer, a prince consort does bow to his in laws based on the demand of protocol. His in laws are a king or queen, and these outrank a prince. The QM usually doesn't bow, and I know of only two times such would be demanded by protocol: Her child becoming King or Queen Regent, and at her child's coronation. If you consider that her son is King and a King outranks a Queen Consort, then she should bow as any other. FYI Only a Queen Consort can become a Queen Mother.

    Was there a family gathering after this and were the duke and duchess of Windsor invited?

    • @GoodnessoGracious
      @GoodnessoGracious  8 років тому +6

      +adelgado75 There were two major gatherings, the funeral of Princess Marina in 1968
      which the Duke of Windsor attended, and the Investiture of the Prince of
      Wales in 1969 to which the Duke and Duchess were invited but they
      declined the invitation. The couple were not entirely estranged from the
      family. The Duke made private calls on the Queen and other family
      members whenever he was in London and the Queen's children and cousins were
      encouraged to visit the Windsors in Paris when they were passing
      through. It is evident that the Queen Mother did not pursue a personal
      relationship, though Christmas and birthdays were observed on a private
      basis. The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales visited
      the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in Paris in 1972, several days before
      the Duke of Windsor's death.

    cont'd ... an American divorcee at that. Perish the thought of an American as Queen who was also a commoner. Thank goodness times have changed or Kate & Wills could never be King & Queen.
    I urge you to read "That Woman", the new book on Wallis by Anne Sebba. It is up to date with all available new material including letters written by Wallis which give a fascinating insight into who she really was. Judgment is bad regardless, but judgment without concrete evidence is a form of deceit.

    that woman! The Duchess is the dream of many of us as teenagers! just that for her there was no Prince Charming, golden chariot, or kingdom of dreams! and as in every fairy tale, here was also great deeds, evil stepmothers and unscrupulous henchmen! I'm glad you love prevailed and they ended their days together!

    yes! I think that the Queen hated her (Wallis) because Wallis perhaps was a bit controller of Edward VIII and initially had a bad temper, also that The Queen was thinking that Wallis was the cause of his son abdicate!
    but anyway Edward would abdicate having knew or not to Wallis because Duke himself repeatedly said: he had inexperience as King, because as his father (George V ) never taught enough about royal affairs, but rather always played a role of prince! =(

    @hashcr Because the Monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Which means, that the monarch must play by the rules. No divorcee's is the rule of the Church. Violating the rules of the Church would be like the Pope swearing or robbing a bank. I think it makes perfect sense because if you want the job that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, than you play by the rules.

    I can't help be wonder if anyone at the ceremony noticed that Wallis' hair looked like the queen of hearts from "Alice in Wonderland". I wonder if that was her trying to say, "off with her head" to Queen Elizabeth in a sly way.

    Oh, poor monarchy, with its refined and freezing protocol! What a shame they give me! Wallis deserves all the respect and admiration, because she have the courage to pursue her dreams! Does it matter ambitions when it comes to dreams? Love should prevail over all things, even over an Empire! Both wom and lost at once, but as is customary in the world of royalty: frivolity first! Long live the Queen Wallis! The boldest woman in the world! The woman that shook the British Monarchy! ;)

    I feel your pain here. As an American, I have seen our government just about devalue our immigration laws for fear of "offending" someone. It is America for a reason, if people dont like it then by all means leave it and go back from whence they came. We dont need or want any more haters here than we already have. So, I feel that we too are being made a minority in our own country here. I couldnt have said it any better than you!!!

    The title is wrong, the Duke was not HRH

    • @jenniferlouiseday
      @jenniferlouiseday 4 роки тому

      The Duke of Windsor was indeed an HRH. HM King George VI was adamant about his staying an HRH because he was born that way. He also invested him with a Dukedom instead of him being called simply Edward Windsor upon the abdication. This was actually pretty clever and well thought out because it ensured that the Duke wouldn't be able to run for any political offices and get the support of the people in a different way since HRHs weren't allowed a political office (they are a neutral royal family after all). The Duchess was the one denied a title because at the time, there was enough scandal and dislike of her that it was held that she wasn't fit or worthy of an HRH title because she was a divorcee. As head of the Church (which didn't recognize divorce), the King has to uphold the ideals and morality of the church and the people as the nation's first family. The decision remained that way, even after the continual attempts to acquire the title for her led by the Duke and Duchess for decades to come, because it was considered that if they gave her the title later, it would have meant she'd been worthy of an HRH. And if worthy of one, the abdication had been for nothing. So the Duke kept his HRH title but if they'd had children, it was agreed that his title would die with him, even his children wouldn't get the title. He tried to change it for years and have Wallis given an HRH but it never happened.

    It isn't a requirement that anyone curtsy to the queen. It is done out of respect for her. I am an American and would never curtsy to her, she would not be offended. I saw a video of her greeting guests at one of her outdoor teas. One of the guests was actor Mickey Rooney. When introduced, he did not bow, but kissed her hand when she presented it to for shaking.

    @NemoFuitHic Excuse me, but we're swimming in stagnant water, and you keep accusing me of actions that I never support in my life, such as Nazism, racism and war. You keep comparing me to my country, well sir, here is the difference, I am not my country and I am no my leaders. I never support Nazism or Nazism's actions in any way. And if it refers to my first message, I spoke about royal protocol, ambitions, dreams, opposition, love and power of love, nothing more...
