    On the register you can see the signatures of Queen Maud of Norway (George V's sister and Marina's first cousin once removed) and her husband Haakon VII (George V's brother-in-law and cousin, and Marina's first cousin once removed), Christian X of Denmark (George V's cousin and Marina's first cousin once removed) and his wife Alexandrine, and George II of Greece (George V's first cousin once removed and Marina's cousin) on the right hand side. You can also see them all in the group photo at the end, the Norwegian royals on the left, Greek and Danish on the right. What amazing links there are between the British, Danish and Greek royal families!

    I think the British monarchy lost something when they stopped inter-marrying with Other royalties of other countries. Princess marina & prince Philip ( who was a prince of Greece and Denmark) Knew what was expected of them as royalties. Look at how many divorces there have been since amongst the subsequent generations of the British royal family and you can see how unprepared most of the spouses were to be members of the royal Family upon their marriage.

    An excellent commentary indeed. I wish there had been included some mention of the date...was it a day in November for it does look like it? It is a common failing the omission of a date: for when writing our notes often do we overlook writing the date: either we think there is no need, we shall remember easily enough when it was, o r that we do not wish to record the passage of time...only at some much later date to spend time wondering just when was it that this or that took place... But the quality of the commentary is quite superb.

    This was and probably will be the last "real" dynastic royal marriage in Britain. The wedding of then-Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) to Prince Philip does not really count as he renounced his princely titles prior to his wedding, this making him a "commoner" on the day of the marriage. A lot of royal guests were in this wedding, I can see. Kings Christian X of Denmark, George II of Greece, Haakon VII of Norway were among them in a pool of foreign princes and princesses.

    • @starryskychic
      @starryskychic 7 років тому +20

      Prince Philip did renounced his titled but he was by no means a "commoner" when he married Queen Elizabeth. Prince Albert later know as ( King George VI) Queen Elizabeths father bestowed Prince Philip a day before his wedding " Royal Highness". On the morning of their wedding Philip was created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich. Even thought he renounced his Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark he was never a commoner. Also the video we are looking at is not of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip but of Princess Marina, Prince George of Kent the fourth son and fifth child of George V and Queen Mary.

      The weather that day evidently wasn't the best. But also, people of that generation regarded marriage as a serious issue -- a covenant affirmed by vows that were to remain intact for life -- certainly not the perspective of today's couples who sign pre-nuptials that dictate how their common property is to be divided in the event of dissolution. More than 50% of marriages in the Western world today end in divorce. In 1934 less than 8% of marriages hit the scrap heap, testifying to the seriousness of "wedlock" in that era within a perceived need to work diligently to assure its success. Hence the "solemnity" we witness in this newsreel.
