She respect him you can know they loved each other . Meghan is bossing Harry around he is a man a leader she is a soft woman beautiful. I don't know why queen Elizabeth mother never give her credit because thanks to her she became queen for a short time and after her eldest daughter. He choose love over king . He could end his relationship with his love and do what Charles did just pick a innocent girl marries her make children and after 18 year or 21 divorce and get back with Wallis so his kids would be air to the thrown .instead that that he give the throne to his brother so Elizabeth mother and father became king and queen and after her father died she became queen an d got married started a family . Walis is not like Meghan talk to much she just sit easy there let her husband speak she was beautiful dressed well and was loyal to the royal family. Sad how people treat people just because she just was a divorce and a actress Kate had 3 boyfriends dump everyone to become a prinses Meghan a divorce and a actress and they are getting different treatments. I think Meghan different because she moved but how a about Diana inocent teen who give Charles her love she was only for Charles while he was fooling around with his ex fling Camilla and the queen knew so she ordered divorce. Diana 2 small son died young left 2 teens alone and the boys had to see there father married his mistress the same woman who Diana always complain about. The queen welcome her in her family married Charles Diana you could've always seen sadness in her eyes and she still had hope for Charles. Her sister Margaret had to choose also between love or staying a royal that is why all her kids divorce except Sophie husband .Sad where is the queen now enjoy ever moment on earth now she is a human like us .
It's a shock to hear such beautiful English being spoken. One forgets how articulate people used to be - no mumbling or slang; so clear and marvellous to listen to.
Sar Rhodes I love listening to the way old English was spoken. I wish it’s taught in school. Americans use too much slangs and short cuts. It’s a shame.
Just yesterday we were virtually driven from a cafe because of the next table....if the young woman said like once, she said it fifty times!!! Most annoying.
Both vile self serving Nazi supporter's Wallis Simpson was a slut who made herself at home in the bed of various Nazis including Von Ribbentrop at the same time Edward was putting his middle finger up to our country and people!! She also passed on British secrets to the Nazis.
Perfect example of why “following your heart” is not always best for people. These two had a glamorous life on the surface but seemed to be very empty and aimless in life after the abdication.
A lot of people are reading too much into Edward not being "happy." That generation didn't show emotions the same way we do. They made their life choices and got on with it.

@@deanaupchurch1593 He was a known Nazi sympathiser, but recently it has been revealed that he and Wallis were in constant contact with Nazi officials, including General von Ribbentrop, even after the commencement of the Battle of Britain. Wallis kept a signed picture of Ribbentrop on her dresser. Even before his abdication, it was known that he was pro-Nazi. His own father put him and Wallis under surveillance. In 1937, he did a tour of Germany and visited a concentration camp, so he can’t be excused for not seeing the Nazis for the monsters they were. He was a famously stupid man who abdicated, then regretted his choice and conspired with the Nazis to win the war so they would reinstate him as a puppet king. The reason there isn’t an entire chapter devoted to this in every WWII history book is that, if it had been revealed at the time that he was committing treason, the punishment was execution and that would have put the monarchy in jeopardy, to have a brother/uncle of the monarch executed for treason.
Both seem regreted their decisions. Wallis never leave him coz he sacrifice everything for her. Edward, he had nothing left behind and theres no turning back so they stick together until the end. Very sad story indeed.
She actually cheated on him and after everything he left for her i felt so sorry for him,but he stuck it out and she did always go back to him and he suffered it... Poor man .
I think they look happy. What a great man atleast he did not spoilt the life of a woman (like Diana) he was man enough to abdicate. A lot of respect for him
Honestly? Most elderly people are like that. Even the successful ones. Life beats you down and by that age you've lost so many people to death they always have an air of sadness.😥
I N That’s a very intriguing question. He definitely looked miserable and uncomfortable and sadly, more than anything, totally resigned to such emotions.
How must one feel being pushed into abdication and being exiled, ostracized, ridiculized and called a traitor? The official narrative is hardly to believe.
There are suggestions that in later life he confided to one or two close friends that he regretted the abdication. He enjoyed the trappings and privilege of the Royal lifestyle, but didn't much care for the duties and responsibilities that went with it.
@Peter Peter I'm not sure that his actual actions could be construed as treason though I have no doubt that had he remained king he would have ended up arrested and eventually executed for treason or else been declared incompetent and appointed a regent who would govern in his place. He admired Hitler too much. But I don't think he quite crossed the line into treason. His brother knew how he felt about Hitler and so he ordered him to the Bahamas. Here in this interview he speaks of his position in the Bahamas stoically but in reality he considered being governor of the Bahamas as a humiliation. He viewed it as Trump would have viewed being appointed assistant to the ambassador to Mexico. Basically such a position amounted to being banished. It is well known that Hitler wanted to re install him as king after he won the war but of course he never won the war. It is not known if they had an actual deal in place for this to happen though it would not shock me if he had. He never spoke of such.
Even The Duchess is very well spoken and dignified. I thought she had been portrayed as a Brash Out There American. She is certainly much more Duchess material than Me Again Markle.

The big difference between Harry and Edward is that Harry was never destined to be king so his actions have a far less profound affect on the monarchy though it may inspire some minor policy changes at the palace. Could apply equally to Prince Harry. Both men had (and have) no purpose, no meaning in their lives. Which happens when you give up your responsibilities for a life without purpose. The Duke of Windsor may have had the woman he loved but he gave up his life in return. And I am sure Harry will end up learning the same lesson

My Dad was born in 1906 and I am 60. It was an age where men were real men and women more gentle (not all of course), and they were altogether more responsible. The world now is very crass, and has lost its memory of the struggles we won in the past and so teeters on the edge of disaster .
Every generation thinks this way about those that come after it. Your grandparents likely thought the way you do about your parents generation. North America and Europe are more peaceful today then they were in the first half of the 1900s. But every generation has its downsides.
Massive abandonment by men during interwar times defies your comment. Leaving women and children without answers and in poverty. You're in an illusion.
I agree..the poor man lost his entire family..kicked out of the country he was born in and loved. The royal family was awful and too harsh and unforgiving of him.
To me in my opinion is that they didn't know what to do with themselves after he removed himself as King. They traveled, gave parties went to parties that were very lavished and did nothing if notable to serve those who did not live such a privileged life.

He really was aware of the poverty, the 'damnable situation' , that the population lived in. It would be amazing if the RF now were as aware and felt they could be as proactive in that regard as Edward.
Would that be the same awareness he used to cozy up to Hitler? Since he promised them the throne, the crown, and everything else that goes with it, as soon as he would take out the royal family and fly a nazi flag over Buckingham Palace.
At 7:25 Edward himself answers your comment. It is also stunning that so many of the deprived areas he mentions are still (after how many years!) pretty much in the same situation😮: deprived, left behind, forgotten. Who and when will really care for those people?!
Oh of course he was so invested in life of poor and unfortunate people that he and her colluded with Hitler 🤯🙄 Jesus, the amount of brainwashed idiots buying into his and RF bs is astonishing
Have you heard of the Prince's Trust and its achievements over the decades? Edward was never that charitable. He talks a great deal about morality but this is a man who admired Hitler and was willing to let Britain fall in exchange for the crown he said to have given up for love. Also; the deprived places of those times are gentrified and very exclusive exclusive.
There are also letters out there between Wallis and her ex husband Ernest, who she had to divorce to marry Edward, with both of them saying that they loved each other and neither of them really wanted the divorce but it had to happen because Edward had threatened to kill himself if she left him. It comes across very clear in her letters to Ernest that she loved him and thought what she had with Edward would be a fun fling, she fully expected to be replaced by someone else and thought her and Ernest could enjoy living the high life for a while. Harry is not important as former King Edward VIII. Harry's departure made no difference in the British Monarchy like Edward VIII's abdication. 1936 abdication crisis had shaken the monarchy. It had completely changed succession line. Harry is 6th in line of succession whereas former King Edward VIII gave up the throne.
Niall Morris The books about him say England got blessed when he abdicated in favor of his good-hearted brother. Edward was totally self-absorbed and aides said he could have cared less about the English people. He wasn’t exactly the most masculine guy, she probably did boss him.
Jane Eyre You are quite right that England was blessed when Edward abdicated. A very weak and selfish man and he got his desserts when he married Wallis Simpson. She wore the pants and weak men are usually attracted to women who can boss them around. Possibly it makes the man feel more secure.
Fibbertigibbet The Queen Mother did dislike Wallis Simpson because she was the catalyst for her husband being thrust in to being king when he was ill prepared however, he did go on to make a good King. Have you seen the movie "The Kings Speech" Jeffrey Rush when he met the Queen asked her if the movie was true to form and she agreed. If you have not seen the movie I urge you to see it.
Everyone, you need to crack open a book or 3. Wallis was just part of David/Edward 's problem. He was bloody weak in every way. He is like Charles in some ways, but can you honestly imagine the current Prince of Wales running off to Hitler, telling him you will cause Great Britain to allow the Germans to take ALL of the land they want, ostensibly "for peace"?? That fool really thought appeasement would end World War II. I thought this was all a nasty rumor, but twenty years of research convinced me. Edward VIII would have caused nightmarish actions and a very different world. So in one sense, I'm bloody grateful for Wallis. Her presence kept a fool off the throne and eventually gave us Her Majesty, Elizabeth II.
Not a Nazi, but he did attempt to "make deals" with Hitler. David was a fool who cares about no one but himself and was beyond lucky to not have been thrown in prison to rot. Weak and pathetic, hated everyone but Wallis, who did not really love him, and absolutely a traitor.
Oh, isn't it lovely how she talks of how happy they are, when in reality they were barely on speaking terms at this point and he died just 3 years later, not in the arms of his "loving" wife but in the arms of his nurse. Wallis, according to his nurse, had not been to his rooms to see him for two weeks prior to his death. Now THAT is sad. She was a classic narcissist and he was a co-dependent enabler. They were both Nazi sympathizers who allegedly plotted to steal back the British throne after Germany defeated Great Britain. So......life didn't work out for these two because they were horrible people to begin with.

I don’t understand why everyone keeps saying he looks like Prince Charles. To me, he doesn’t look a thing like Charles. King Edward was a far more handsome man. He was very distinguished looking.
David thought that he could have a role in Britain after he abdicated. That was not impossible as you can’t have the reigning King and the abdicated King in the same country.
They found her letters and she SO MUCH regretted leaving her husband for him. But I can admire, that after the deal was sealed she kept at it. Like from her story she looks so instable, fooling around, but than stick to him, even though both of them looks unhappy with their choices of each other.
Interesting how much David clashed with his Gemini father (my father always wore a top hat, I wanted to wear a bowler hat) and then he gave it all up for a Gemini woman. George V wife Mary was also Gemini and so was Queen Victoria. Have to wonder who King Edward Vlll would have married had he not met Wallis. So that, should I say I will give up the King tomorrow, I still could not make Ernest happy, as I would be discontented and always regretting having given him up and wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t… I am very sorry for Ernest and have tried to make things as easy as possible, and of course being a strong and noble character and a wonderful friend to me he will find his feet again and I feel that he should have the chance to find happiness again - especially when I know I can only make him unhappy by remaining 2 miserable people”. Undated 1935 Wallis to Edward: “..Please understand I am not writing a lecture only your behaviour last night made me realise how very alone I shall be some day - and because I love you I don’t seem to have the strength to protect myself from your youthfulness… God bless WE and be kind to me in the years to come for I have lost something noble for a boy who may always remain Peter Pan”. October 14 1936: “Together I suppose we are strong enough to face this mean world - but separated I feel eanum and scared for you, your safety etc…Hold me tight please David.” November 30 1936 Wallis writes to her friend Sibyl Colefax: “I am planning quite by myself to go away for a while…. After a while my name will be forgotten by the people and only two people will suffer instead of a mass of people who aren’t interested anyway in individual feelings but only the workings of a system.” December 12th 1936 (the day after the abdication): “Darling, My heart is so full of love for you and the agony of not being able to see you after all you have been through is pathetic. At the moment we have the whole world against us and our love… If we could have been together during the waiting it would have been so much easier. I long for you so… October 29th 1955: “Darling darling one, I do miss you so much and have had a most difficult time… Please do not sleep in your bedroom at the Mill. It is the perfect fire trap - you could never get down the stairs. You must sleep in my room. I never thought of this before and have had night nerves over it…. Darling this is a mixed up letter but it has been an awful week.… Miss you miss you love again, WALLIS”. November 6th 1955: “Darling I love you so very much and miss you every minute, WALLIS”. November 27th 1955: “Never will I be away from you for so long again. Can’t wait for Friday - we sail at 12 noon. Everyone has been too divine to me - we have good friends here in spite of the stinking press and Arnory. I love you more & more and hope Fruity destroyed nothing at the Mill. Your WALLIS”.

She was a divorcee and if she would be desperately unhappy with him she would leave, but she didn’t. I think they loved each other and made the best of the situation.
I cannot see any regret, only bitterness and being powerless to talk openly.
They knew exactly what they did. Imaginary guilt is etched on my ar*e.
He breaks your heart. He seems utterly vulnerable, really.....he presented as such a sad and anxious figure. He never was able to feel settled anywhere. Never found his way. Loving someone so desperately may mean that you follow your heart but that can sometimes take you to all the places you should never go. A wasted life, even when when it’s lived out with someone you love can sometimes still lead to profound emptiness.
So well said. 😔
He could have still made something of his life. He could have become a professional or something other productive. He was still in control of how his life unfolded.
@@christosyal5883 Yes he had tremendous advantages, but unlike the current David and Wallace (Harry and Meghan) at least respected the Royal Family.

Thank you for putting this video up. Very interesting interview. A cultured interviewer and an ex king who certainly gave a different impression to how I have been led to regard him. 9/23
Despite how he comes across in this interview one only has to remember he was aligning with Hitler to know how drastically different things could have been had he not abdicated.
I’ve only ever seen the Wallis and Edward portion of this interview. It’s fascinating to hear the man speak on various topics. He’s more interesting than I ever believed before.
Unlike the Duke and Duchess of Sussex the Duke of Windsor didn't slag off the Royal family in that interview.
@@vanessalouise8988 I’d say that perhaps their concerns were justified. There was no protection given to the couple. Especially Meghan. The tabloid press was weaponized against them. They are still at it and as Tom Bower openly remarked “it’s Meghan I’m after”. We call that saying the quiet part out loud. That family deserves whatever they’ve got coming. Their supporters on this side of the pond are right-wing, white supremacists. Personally I hope it helps speed the end of a ridiculous anachronism in the 21st century.

The poor man. She didn’t really ever love him. She was trapped by the circumstances. There are videos of her handwritten letters. It sounds like she actually began to loathe him. On his deathbed as he called to her… Wallis, darling, over and over, she never came. He was in the care of a nurse. Rejected by his family and country. He seems so sad and wounded...
It seems that Wallis being a stronger person emotionally, didn't help at all to easy his pains.
She was emotionally distant from him. Theirs was just an affair to her. He was totally won over by her strong personality.
One person cannot make another person strong or healed. Each person must learn to be strong and to heal themselves.
She just wanted to be Queen careless about him. Heard she cheated on him, he was all alone.
She definitely wasn't as fond of him as he was of her. But he had learned he was dying of throat cancer shortly before giving this interview, and that's why he chose to do it. He knew it would be his last chance to tell his side of the story.
I don't think she ever acknowledged the fact that he left everything for her .maybe , he realised she wasn't for him too late that the damage was already done .
The Rolls Royce story really touched me. He had some serious depth. While, like so many humans, he made some tough choices, and had to live with the repercussions of those choices. Thank you for sharing.

There may be something that runs in the family. I heard a recording of Prince Charles reading poetry (I can't remember now whose poetry, maybe Dylan Thomas?) and I was very impressed at how well he spoke. The Prince has an excellent voice for reading poetry.

Every generation thinks this way about those that come after it. Your grandparents likely thought the way you do about your parents generation. North America and Europe are more peaceful today then they were in the first half of the 1900s. But every generation has its downsides.

To me in my opinion is that they didn't know what to do with themselves after he removed himself as King. They traveled, gave parties went to parties that were very lavished and did nothing if notable to serve those who did not live such a privileged life.
Most wealthy as them do nothing for the average person. Even their seeming help through charities is incentivized by tax breaks, not the willingness to help. Most are terrible misers, not willing to part with a dollar unless it benefits them.

It all backfired spectacularly though.

He gave up everything for her. Probably still happier though than if he'd stayed.
Jane Eyre You are quite right that England was blessed when Edward abdicated. A very weak and selfish man and he got his desserts when he married Wallis Simpson. She wore the pants and weak men are usually attracted to women who can boss them around. Possibly it makes the man feel more secure.

Wallis, according to his nurse, had not been to his rooms to see him for two weeks prior to his death. Now THAT is sad. She was a classic narcissist and he was a co-dependent enabler. And if one’s really interested in their relationship and in the truth - one should read the letters Wallis and Edward sent to each other! Letters of love, letters of worrying about each other when not together.
May 4th 1936 Wallis writes to her aunt Bessie: “It would be extremely difficult to go back to life in Bryanston Court as it was before. In other words I’ve outgrown it and Ernest.
October 14 1936: “Together I suppose we are strong enough to face this mean world - but separated I feel eanum and scared for you, your safety etc…Hold me tight please David.”
November 30 1936 Wallis writes to her friend Sibyl Colefax: “I am planning quite by myself to go away for a while…. After a while my name will be forgotten by the people and only two people will suffer instead of a mass of people who aren’t interested anyway in individual feelings but only the workings of a system.” December 12th 1936 (the day after the abdication):
“Darling, My heart is so full of love for you and the agony of not being able to see you after all you have been through is pathetic. At the moment we have the whole world against us and our love… If we could have been together during the waiting it would have been so much easier. I long for you so…
October 29th 1955: “Darling darling one, I do miss you so much and have had a most difficult time… Please do not sleep in your bedroom at the Mill.

Oh my… I don’t know why but I feel he was enticed by Wallis and I think after he abdicated and the honeymoon excitement died down and as he got older, memories of royal life came flooding back. … I think Wallis was self obsessed. … And this was filmed 50 years ago.
I love this. So much is said about him but it’s rare to see and hear him speak, watch his actual demeanor, etc. He comes across very well, much better than I expected. He’s intelligent, knowledgeable - hard to believe he’s the child trapped in a man’s body as he’s always been described.
I agree, I am surprised , very impressive
Somebody ask if it's? Allis trapped Edward into marriage? No don't think so I think it's d other way around ?Who meets a real King everyday or even A Bachelor King Same story with Prince Charles!!
Ah he wasn’t intelligent dear 99.9% of anyone who met him thought that…..he was almost like a child. Total disaster as a king….
You take a very thought out interview…..if a few mins to decide his entire character?
Sure thing. Sounds plausible 🤣😂
That’s because that’s the lies that were told about him to make them look “less than” to the public.
@@6Haunted-Days and you take all the propaganda that was fed to you rather than meet and talk with him in person so you are in no better position to be calling someone out like that. Your hypocrisy is alarming.
Thank you! What an interesting video. I recently finished reading "Dancing with the Devil" by Christopher Wilson. The book details the relationship between Jimmy Donahue (the son of a Woolworth heir) and the Windsors. The book was published in 2000. It is fascinating.
Ooohhhh, that sounds fascinating!!! May be my next read after I finish Traitor King.
I think he regretted abdicating. Regardless of how much he loved her, at the end of the day he had been groomed to be a King and threw it all away for someone that probably didn’t even wanted him to do so.
He never wanted to become king.
Well, then I guess it runs in the family where they don’t want to do the work but want to keep the benefits and titles.
I notice he is slouching, fidgeting, almost boy like. I would think he would sit upright for an interview
Legs spread to the world
She sat more regal than he did!
What was he doing rubbing the chair like a baby does to their blanket...could it be a nervous tell? I think so..he’s probably hoping they don’t ask him about Hitler.
He da king
His chair does not support good posture.
What a sad interview. He looks so lost.
I agree.
He was dying
Yes, she talks a lot
He got cold feet and tried to pull out of the interview, but it was too late...🎩
The Duke I think lived a very lonely life to some degree. I think he may have had his regrets at times.
Lovely interview. I just noticed that Edward with fidgeting incredibly with his hands the whole time . wonder why? surely he’s used to giving interviews any body language experts out there?
