When I use a guillotine cutter, I gently press the blades against the cigar and rotate the cutter about a 1/4 - 1/2 turn thus slicing the wrapper very slightly. I then press cut the rest of the way. The cut is always clean and perfect never damaging or crushing the wrapper. Once I tried this technique I never looked back.
I prefer the V cut because the cap of the cigar can at times be a just a little dry and if you use a guillotine or a punch it could cause the cigar to unravel at the tip though using a V cutter to me will prevent from that happening
@@joeysaucedo3428 I use a punch a lot and they will crack a cap pretty easily, I've found just moistening it a bit makes a huge difference. Happy to help, that's why we're all here!
LOL. That's the same thing I did 30 years ago when I started smoking cigars. But admittedly, me and my buddies were idiots and didn't know any better. We'd seen it in movies and thought it was how we were supposed to do it. These days, V cutter all the way.
I never understood why they put a cap on. I guess the cousin of the guy who had a cigar factory came up with the idea. - " Hey, ese, why don't you put a lid on all cigars and I'll start manufactoring cutters."
Excellent video, thank you! I've fallen in love with the v-cut over the years and it's pretty much the only cut I use. For this reason I have avoided the torpedo and similar shaped cigars because I always assumed you couldn't get a good v-cut on them. Thanks to this video I'm looking forward to adding torpedo shapes back into my rotation.
Been smoking cigars for 2-4 years now. Used to be deathly terrified of straight until I saw a video on how to properly do it. Pin was confusing at first because I thought you had to take out what was cut but then again, another video I happened across showed me otherwise. I use all 3 cuts, what I use now depends on my cigar and mood. Haven’t smoked a torpedo yet but now thanks to you and your video I’ll be able to not just cut but smoke one.
Call me old fashion but I love a straight cut. Currently have a Calibri Double Guillotine with 440 stainless blades that I have at least 800 cuts on and it's still sharp as the day I got it. The black coating is looking almost as bad as that old V cutter you showed but its still cutting great. If I forget that I usually just grab my pocket knife (also 440 stainless) ,which is always kept razor sharp, and use that. My lighter does have one of those punches built in as a last resort but doesn't get used much.
As a newbie I like to sick with the kiss method. My Cigars Daily order will be arriving today. Just wanted to give a big thank you for the fast shipping!
Biggest cigar I’ve smoked was a 7x70 Ogre and I was grateful to have a punch cut for that. 99% of the time, v cut works for me. I’d never seen the torpedo trick before, that was great!
As usual Tim, great vid. I have all 3 types of cutters, straight, v, and punch. I typically use a straight cut. I do like v cutters as well. I usually use a punch if I smoke my cubin sandwich bundles, because I've noticed I get more tobacco pieces from them if I use a straight cutter. Stay safe brother and thanks again for the awesome videos.
I mostly use a punch. Mostly because it’s built into my lighter and it’s convenient. But I’ll also use a V-Cut at times as well. Especially when I’m out at the cigar lounge enjoying a good smoke.
I learn something new every time I watch these videos from you, Tim. I just bought a box of Oliva V Melanio Figurado cigars, which are shaped like torpedoes on the cap end. I forgot my straight cutter at home, and had to use a V cutter, which I had never used on a torpedo before. I cut it straight, and it was still fine to smoke. In fact I love using a V cutter on torpedoes now. But I didn't do it at an angle, even though I always cut at an angle with a straight cutter. Seeing you do it in this video kinda opened my eyes to a better way of enjoying torpedoes. Thank you Boss!
Tim, love your content brother. Only a few months ago your channel found its way into my feed....I was a non smoker but your advice and knowledge led me to try a cigar.....now my world has changed....this hobby is soooo relaxing and stress relieving!!! I have been missing out on the "brotherhood of the leaf"....this is true therapy and meditation!!! I picked up one of your acrylic desktop humidors and love it...I have also purchased some sampler packs and found some of my favorites. Thank you for opening new doors and experiences!!!
+1 on the H-Steel cutter. I'm probably 150 cigars deep on mine and it's still sharp enough to collect a debt. Infact I sold my Colibri V because I completely stopped using it after getting the H-Steel.
You always leave out the Dickman's cut. It is especially awesome on a torpedo. Putting that angled straight cut on a cone really does bring the draw straight to flavor sensors of the tongue. Why do you consistently ignore such a wonderful cut?
I have a punch cut on my keychain for when I am out and about, a v cutter for when I am home and a straight cutter is in my bag for beach/pool/barbecue days.
Very helpful! I use a backstopped straight cutter most of the time. It's got the logo of my favorite cigar lounge on the backstop. Plus I have a backstop from LaGloria as well. Very classic. I also have the JetLine FatBoy with punch, which can actually have 2 depths if you don’t use the locking setting. And I love the cigar rest on it. I'm going to try that Colibi SV! Seems to have the best combo. Thanks, Tim! UPDATE: So I bought the Colibri SV and I love it! Subjectively, the V cut seems to me to allow a slightly richer flavor to come thru the cigar to my pallet. But, the visible difference is that the interior of the cigar stays drier (fresher) longer than a straight cut. The interior of the V doesn't get wet, which definitely alters the flavor. So while I still like my logo backstop cutter, and the built in punch on my Fatboy, the SV has become my Goto at home by the fire. Thanks for all your great content and enthusiasm, Tim!😊
It is all about retaining the shoulder integrity. For a press box, v-cut never fails. For a large ring gauge, punch is the way to go. All others, a straight perfect cutter is reliable. Lastly, go all metal. They last forever.
I got put on the Perfect Cutter a long time ago, so I've used a straight cut for years, but to be honest, lately I've been more and more interested in the V-Cut. It's more versatile... Torpedo? Works great. Big ring gauge? Crown cut. It just seems like it would be really handy to have.
I never use a punch! I don't know how many cigars I've ruined trying. I gave up. I use a V-cut mostly and of course the straight a close second. Great educational video as usual Tim!!! Long ashes to you!
It's very easy to ruin a cigar with a punch unless you have a quality one. The ones built into lighters dull after like 3 cuts haha.. I use a punch more than anything else, you just need a nice sharp one and licking the cap helps as well. If you hold cigars in your mouth because you're using your hands than a punch just feels better and holds up to teeth and drool better lmao
OMG THANK YOU! At the end of the video you mention how "many cigars in x,y,z and dominican Republic just kinda hand twist it at the bottom" I visited Punta Cana recently and I bought a couple early in the day but waited until the girlfriend and kids were sleeping to step outside and enjoy one....totally forgot, they took it at the tsa before the flight Almost like a vacation miracle, right as I'm about to bite it, I notice a little leaf ever, ever so slightly frayed from the cigar... I give it a gentle tug and it was like boobs falling out of a bra for the first time. I'd never seen anything like it. Perfectly ready to light without a cutter at all. So of course my dumb ass thought he discovered something new because of course all the cigars did it So I get back to jersey and a couple dozen cigars later I check every one to see if I can unravel it, losing my mind. Becoming unhinged. Wondering if the entire vacation was a dream. You made it right man, thank you
I've got a 15ish year old Palio straight cutter that still cuts as clean as day one. I've cut hundreds of cigars with that beauty. Probably well over a thousand, really. Lots of hundreds. It's been all over the US and world with me. We're currently in Ukraine... where cigars aren't available anymore. Thanks to Russia.
I'm thinking your punch cutter isn't the best size and that's why you have problems with even a very slight torpedo cigar. I use a 7 mm punch and it's the perfect size IMO. It looks like your punch cutter is HUGE, like 12 mm or bigger I'm guessing.
Thanks for the video man, I just got the exact same SV-Cutter and love it so far I now ordered the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 and was wondering if I should use the V-Cut kind of like you did with the torpedo here?
Punch is best imo. Straight is ok and NEVER a v-cut. V-cut destroys the end of the cigar and just seems disrespectful and wrong. You may as well be chewing the end off.
I prefer the V-cut personally because of the mouthfeel and also because I don’t cut too deeply. I usually cut torpedoes on the bias slightly with a straight cutter, but I’m definitely going to try the V-cut for that going forward. Punch is okay but does cause cap issues
V-Cut is my preference, in some cases box pressed cigars are a little challenging but if you take tour time it can be done, also depends on the size of the cigar.
I smoke a lot of Arturo Fuentes Exquisitos at work since their sized perfectly to hang in my mouth while i run an excavator without making me drool and i don't even cut them haha! I use my thumbnail to clip the cap off and rhey never unravel and always draw perfectly.
For me, it depends on the cap. If it's a shallow cap, I use a punch. If it's a average cap, I use a straight cutter and of coarse, if it's a good/multiple cap, I use a V cutter. That's just me. 🤷
I have quite a few cutters of all types about the house. The one that gets used the most is the $4 Craftsman's Bench punch that lives with my car keys. Go figure.
Ive got a knock off perfect cutter from Amazon, the one that stops you cutting too much off your cigar, that just does a straight cut, i dont know if i can be bothered trying another way lol.
For me, it depends on the cigar. If it's a large ring gage, I will use a punch, most standard ring gage parejos I use a V-cutter. And for torpedoes, I use the straight cut at an angle.
I use punch. I have done it on torpedos straight on only issue was leaving a tail lol but I had a knife on me and cut the tail off but it smoked grate none the less lol
I doubt that some of these rollers in these 3rd world countries are walking around with a $100 Colibrí cutter in their pockets!!!! The punch is a fancy version of the original bullet casings that the soldiers used in WW1 ! Most people in these countries bite the caps off or use the thumb nail to pry the cap off or use a extremely sharp pocket knife! We Americans just add that extra to a simple pastime spending $1500 for a ST DuPont lighter isn’t gonna change your smoking experience versus the guy smoking a Cohiba Behike lit with wooden matches or a strip of cedar no matter what he’s still smoking a Behike 😂😂😂😂😂
Truth , I have a punch and 2 different straight cutters. All under $10 and work perfectly fine and have used them dozens of times and they're still sharp. Same with my torch lighter's , I think the most expensive ones are from Amazon , a 2 pack for $15. Those are the only things I have multiple of because there's always problems with the jets. But they generally work 80% of the time... PS my punch is actually a replica of a bullet casing from Amazon and works just fine , I think I paid $5....
The ‘straight cutter on the table’ method is a great idea!
I also just used a straight cutter and nip the cap off. My most preferred.
I prefer the V cut because the cap of the cigar can at times be a just a little dry and if you use a guillotine or a punch it could cause the cigar to unravel at the tip though using a V cutter to me will prevent from that happening
V cut, I’ve messed up too many caps lol
Lick the cap just a little bit before you cut and the cap will very rarely crack. Just don't do it if you're using someone else's cutter lol
@@austinbrown5426 oh ok Thanks for the tip I will definitely do that next time.

A mature cigar shouldn’t do that. You can also moisten the cap with your mouth and use your own cutter to avoid making anyone angry.
It's probably because he was in the military but my grandfather bites the cap off his cigars. Heathen. 😂

Made me giggle 😂

Depends on vitola and press. Box pressed demands a deep v cut. Torpedo must be straight. Other than that, it's whatever you're feeling.
What cigar do you recommend for a person who likes dark stouts and Porter beers

I'm new so as of now I use Straight Cut but just bought a V Cutter and have not try the Punch but maybe next I will let everyone know my favorite.
8:31 are you sure? ;) 8:11 shows the wrapper beeing destroyd. Usually does not happen with the VCut though

Depends on what the individual likes!🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Almost always a V cut guy. Got a xifei 3 in 1 for those times when I need a punch or straight cut. 60 bucks well spent
Ive got a knock off perfect cutter from Amazon, the one that stops you cutting too much off your cigar, that just does a straight cut, i dont know if i can be bothered trying another way lol.
Punch for life. I think the V sucks, but it’s all whatever you like. Just preference.
For me, it depends on the cigar. If it's a large ring gage, I will use a punch, most standard ring gage parejos I use a V-cutter. And for torpedoes, I use the straight cut at an angle.
I prefer the crown cut for my 60's what do you think? I like short fat cigars the nub is one of my favorites.
Have to punch 100 also v-cut the same amount I have to use my straight cutter alil more #cigarlife ☮️[my punch cut is always there👍
I don't see any affiliate links. Do you have any? I want the Colibri sv and would like to see you get a kick back.
Straight cut on a torpedo, pouch on anything else because I like to have more of the cap left for the flavor.
Bro's out here deepthroating cigars 😂 touch your uvula? Bruh
Why can't you just punch cut the end?
I personally dont like v-cut, unless its a torpedo. I just think its a weird mouth feel !
I usually use the straight cut. Once in a while when i go to a cigar lounge they'll V cut the cigar. I didn't mind it but i prefer the straight cut
I use a standard straight cutter however, I did just purchase a colibri v cutter wish me luck!
Punch is always the best, but most common people only have a cutter and you can’t really punch a Belicoso.
You didn’t say how far to go with the V cut I think I didn’t cut further up the foot enough
With the guillotine it’s said to cut the tip
I punch it first to check the draw, it prevents me from setting a v-cut when its probably to loose for my taste
How’s the karate chop cut I heard is very precise ha just kidding Tim😜
I use punch. I have done it on torpedos straight on only issue was leaving a tail lol but I had a knife on me and cut the tail off but it smoked grate none the less lol
I ussually straight cut, but sometimes choose a 'double v' or 'cross cut'
Straight outside, v inside. No particular reason though I do prefer v
I have them all but find I use the v cut the most. Straight cut any torpedoes that cross my path but almost never use a punch.
V cut on a box pressed and straight cut on everything else. Never tried a punch
You forgot one more cutter and that's a drill made only for cigars with a 60 or larger ring size
As for v cutters after you cut them how do you smoke your cigar with the v going up and down or side to side?
Punch everyday. Unless I have a cigar that I can't punch then its a V-cut.
I use a straight cut becouse I also smoke Toscano cigars and need to cut them in half, so I'm used to that cutter
I have been going with the crosscut more and honestly I love it
Straight cutter all the way unless it’s a beastly 770+, then I use a punch.
churchill size , lancero or gordo, straight cut.... every other vitola i go v
i vcut anything larger than around a 42 gauge usually and straight cut anything smaller
I have learned that plastic is not fantastic. I use what I feel like at the time. I have all three in metal and they are all good.
I use my pocket knife. You can score it all around so it doesn’t crack.
Depends on the cigar, but I lean to a v cut for almost everything
Straight cut. It’s what I have. If I have something else I’ll use it.
What about the table cutters that are a bit rounded out. Different sizes and a bit more of a rounded cut
I was loyal to the straight cut until I tried the v cut. Never went back
I used to only use my Colibri S cutter by now I only use my Colibri V cutter
Bro, I use a kitchen knife. I can make a little smiley face cut if I want to.
I usually go Straight Cut or Rose Cut (Criss-crossed V Cut)
Straight cut and depending on the tightness of the roll, a punch also.
I wish I new that the type of v cutter matter I mashed a cigar or 2 trying to use that dam thing
I prefer to unravel it and roll it back up with green stuff in it
v cut and straight but I prefer v Cut if I'm being honest
"The more you cut, the less you smoke"
I started cutting my cigar with my mouth
Straight V and Punch for me depending on the cigar.
I like the punch cut. Only because I think it’s cool.
