How To Sprout! | A Great Food For Your Bird

- I have been receiving SO many questions regarding proper parrot nutrition. One of the BEST things you can give your bird is SPROUTS! I was super intimidated by sprouts when I first started but it is actually really easy and I hope you inspire the lot of you to try sprouting (whether it is for YOU or your bird).
Buy your sprouts from a good source to prevent from dangerous bacterial outbreaks: sproutpeople.org/seeds/
1. Rinse whatever you're sprouting
2. Fill up jar with water and let beans/grains/nut/seeds soak for 8-12 hours. Overnight is fine!
3. Rinse and drain well. Put jar on its side and store in a dim space
4. Repeat this step 2x a day for 2-4 days

I’m getting a jar and lentils now! Love how Bogie is trying to eat the sprouts ftom outside the jar. 😆
YAY! Let me know how it goes for you! and yeah isn't he the CUTEST?
Wow this is so cool. Great vid
Thanks Scott!
Ever seen my little sister watch your videos she been wanted to take care of birds so I found this lady that wanted some help with her birds like clean the floor and help carry the food to feed them. She wanted to vegetables just so she can be strong as well
That's wonderful!
I wish I'd seen your video before when my birds were alive, they would of loved it. Your video was great.😊

I love sprouting! Archie’s favourite sprouts are chickpeas, lentils, buckwheat and mung beans!
I have a hard time finding mung beans! Where do you get them usually?
@@flocklife they sell them in a store near me, but I have also got them off Amazon!
@@archiesflock7517 Ok I will check amazon. Cause I love to eat mung bean sprouts too ahaha
They are so incredibly healthy for our birds! I do them every few days and add them fresh to the chop I take out of the freezer. It's a great way to introduce veggies to a picky bird also!
Yeah I add mine to Bogie's chop too :)
I do that too, and to get my birds to have some pellets I crush the pellets up in the evening and mix them with sprouts so the pellet powder is stuck all over the yummy sprouts
@@yamunadevi68 Love that!
I’ll try thanks for this tip
Yes! Your birb will thank you :)
Sprouting is such a fun & easy part of making a nutritious chop mix for your bird. Thanks Emily for the cute & informative video! 🥰💕
Why thank you!
Yayyyy I have everything in my home I will start making it today .🤩
YAY! Let me know how it goes :)
Yay my one already started to sprout 🤩🥳🥳
nice! what did you end up sprouting??
bogi looks soo clean I ve my gala n he took bath but not look clean after 2 days
Yay! I finally watched it and it seems so exciting to try? Here are my questions...
1) where do you store them for the week?
2) could you use a mix of beans to fill your 1/4c or do you need to stick to 1 bean at a time?
3) How do you blanch sprouts so that I can keep them in my freezer?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It really does seem so easy and cool!
I guess my next step is to see if I can find a video of what to put in chop for my green cheek conure and see how difficult it is to do. . .
So I store them in a glass pyrex container in the fridge. You can totally use a mix of beans, I see a lot of bird owners doing that. I think there are even sprouting mixes you can buy specifically. I think blanching is where you flash dunk something in boiling water right? As far as the chop recipe goes... I use @birdtricks' recipe and can share the link and Bogie does have a little discount code. Other people I know kinda make their own chop, but I like Birdtricks because it is avian vet approved and has a great variety within the four recipes.

BOGIETHEGALAH for a discount :)
Please update this video in some way to include adding either Apple Cider Vinegar or Grapefruit Seed Extract.
I know you and Bogie yourselves are familiar with how vast the variety of bacteria and fungi can be.
Be safe!
Wishing you all well.
Yes! definitely need to make a new video!
Where did u get bogie’s cage?
Hello Emily 🎉 thank you so much for this . May i ask some questions? Why she's not eating the sprouts 🤔 it's like she wants seeds only (or am i wrong 🤔) . And i want to give sprout seeds to dove , do you think size of sprout matter ?
Hello Emily, what kind of lentils do you suggest? There are sooo many types and I'm nervous about getting the wrong one
Be careful everyone. There's a later Flock Life show where Bogie gets a bacterial infection and the vet tells her NOT to sprout, apparently because it may be a source of bacteria.
If you happen to be crafty and for whatever reason don't want that sprouting jar, you can always use a plastic mesh that comes in beginner cross stitch kits. Hopefully someone knows what I mean lol.
Oh that is a great idea!
@@flocklife my mom said hell nah to me ordering a sprouting kit lmao, she found plastic mesh and that's what ours is. Mason jar and mesh cut to size. 😂
Thanks for the video! How long before they go bad? And can we store them in the freezer if we make a large batch?
Great questions! They last for a week. I always smell mine to make sure they are still good, but don't go past a week.
And this is what I found about freezing sprouts- If you find yourself with more sprouts than you can use, you can keep them in the freezer, where they'll stay good for up to a year. To preserve as much of the flavor and texture as possible, you should blanch the bean sprouts before freezing them.
i have one question I'm about to get gallah cockatoo i used to have birds but they sadly died after they were to old and now I'm in the struggle because my brother who sleeps in living room doesn't like birds and he doesn't want bird to scream at night or in the morning and then comes another problem that in living room is alot of light and its big living room but in my room there is no windows and almost zero light from outside and I don't know if its smart to keep bird at my room at night and then bring him to living room in the morning until we go sleep again
Unfortunately, I advise you not get a cockatoo. They need lots of natural sunlight (vitamin D) and most cockatoos are very loud. They are an intellectual and very high maintenance creature and you're off to a rough start if family members already are not supportive. You need everyone in the family to be on the same page when deciding to. buy any pet!
How long do you store them for after they’re done sprouting?
Never mind I saw in the comments lol!
Up to a week ( but i always smell mine to make sure) If they smell weird or are slimy toss them!
@@ErinT1023 haha just saw this
Can budgies eat sprouts too? :) love u bogie!
YES! They definitely can and Should :)
My Budgie loooooves his sprouts every day along with my Conure
@@yamunadevi68 what are your budgie's fav sprouts?
@@flocklife I soak Tops organic all in one seed mix for large to medium hookbills, I tried the small one on my Conure and Budgie and not only did I personally find that it didn’t sprout well, my birds didn’t like it, but they looooooove this. It has Barley, rye berries, spelt, kamut, buckwheat, millet, pumpkin seeds and sprouts so well. Hope this helps
@@yamunadevi68 Yeah that is cool! Didn't know about the sprout mixes. I tried sprouting millet grains the other day, but something when wrong and they rotted..?
I want to try sprouting I worry about bacteria 🦠 How can I be sure this won’t happen 🤷♀️is sprouting healthier than the chop or are they both about the same?
