I keep sprouting them each day so they stay in the sprouting jar and I feed them each morning - they usually last about 4 or so days once the white tails have appeared!
This video is very helpful! My budgie took to sprouts very easily and I enjoy sprouting my own seeds. Thanks for promoting healthy diets and parrot wellbeing in general
Just popped in to say thank you for teaching me a great life skill. This was the most helpful video, and after years of debating sprouting, you gave me the confidence to try. I was so worried about bacteria and wasn’t quite sure how to use the AVC properly, but you convinced me, and I’m so thrilled with the results, and my new mama bird loves them.
I just got a baby cockatiel never had a baby only adults before so I’m learning so much about how to feed him sprouts and chop mix thank you for showing this I definitely will try
I enjoyed watching this video! I especially appreciate how you did three different sprouting batches and showed a day-to-day comparison, it helps to be able to see visually how the tail growth progression would look like. Also I love how you suggested apple cider vinegar and grapefruit seed extract as antibacterial agents. Considering this will be my first go at sprouting, I would feel a bit more at ease if I add a few drops in addition to monitoring it of course :)
I love this video, I have watched it twice and even bought the sprouting jar and the sprouting mix from garden feathers and after your advice I managed to sprout!
Hi Sophie! thanks for all the tips! I can get the type of sprouting blends you suggest here. But I do I have an organic shop! Can I sprout sesame seeds, chia, linseed, millet? these are types of seeds I can easily get my hands on at my organic store. I'll try to find more types and come ask you about those too. Can we (humans) eat the sprouted seeds too?
You can sprout the millet but the others tend not to work so much! Yes humans can eat sprouts too - I am releasing an updated version of this video very soon so check that one out too!
Quinoa sprouts so quickly that you can feed it from the 2 hour soak onwards! I start serving the mung beans once the little white tail starts appearing!
Hi Sophie, I just asked a question in the wrong video. You were mentioning here to try soaking buckwheat for 15 minutes and it could be fed. I did not see that something happened, it didn't look different. Did I misunderstand? Did I do something wrong? I really liked this video and would like to sprout and see if my Quaker likes it. I'd appreciate your feedback. 😊
Hi I love the way u explain everything simple and easy,Can I use dry corn seeds as well I have buck wheat, lentils yellow split peas, chick peas and white beans and do I give my parrots to eat raw or cooked after its sprouted
I’m glad you liked it! You can’t offer white beans, and it depends what type of corn you have! Split peas shout be offered after 12 hours of soaking as they can’t sprout, but everything else is fine to sprout and doesn’t need to be cooked!
@@BirdNerdSophie hi I have some ordinary dry corn seeds and fresh sweet corns ,and I did soak some split peas and forgot it in the fridge for like a week and they all sprouted
pleasantly surprised to see best bird food ever ships to the US and for a reasonable expense too. definitely going to try them thank you. after about how many days of the sprouts growing do you feed your birds?
Hello, thank you so much for all of the information you provide!!😊 I was wondering for how long can I leave the sprouts once I serve it in the cage? I live in a tropical climate and im worried it would go bad by the time I arrive from work.
Hey, unless your house is super super hot, they will be fine! It’s cooked food that tends to go off really quickly rather than raw! That being said, make sure you potion out what your bird actually eats to reduce the likelihood of it sitting there all day!
@@BethRo-ut6qp Hello, I lived in a tropical country too. I provide sprouts to my parrot in evening (after I went home) every day , so you could sure the freshness of the sprouts. If I provide the sprouts in the morning, I will put the sprouts away after 30 minutes to one hour (based on the temperature of that day).
Tomorrow I will bring home my two beautiful cockatiels and I wanted to thank you for all the help ❤️ I have a question, can I feed the sprouting seed from day 1 or should I wait until the have completely sprouted day2-3? Thank you!
Hi, I have another question for you! I read that chickpeas and lentils and other legumes should always be cooked. But how do you sprout cooked beans or chickpeas? Or am I wrong in that?
Most beans and legumes are toxic when raw/sprouted and must be cooked! The only ones that are safe to sprout (uncooked) are chickpeas, lentils, mung beans and aduki beans 😊
First of all, thank you for answering my questions. I have a couple more... -can we also eat the wheat free sprouts or is it only meant for the birds? Same for the chickpeas and quinoa? -also what about salad spouts like broccoli, radish, peas, alfalfa and clover seeds?
Hi Laura! The specific product is a marketed as a pet food but all of the ingredients in it plus the ones you mentioned are all safe to be sprouted and eaten by parrots and people 😊
Thanks for the apple cider vinegar tip! I’m new to sprouting but just bought a new sprout mix like the one you used in this video so I’m going to give it a try. Do I need to to rinse the sprouts again after leaving them in the jar to drain? Or do I just leave them there like that until they sprout? How long does it typically take for a sprout mix? Thanks Sophie!
@@BirdNerdSophie I ordered some apple cider vinegar even though the organic unpasteurized was pretty expensive - I’m guessing in about 2-3 days my mix should be sprouted. I’m curious to see if my birds like them. I plan to let them air dry for a while since my cockatiels prefer dry foods.
@@BirdNerdSophie I also have a dry sprouted mix I get from Christine’s Chop Shop that my one cockatiels really loves. My other cockatiel won’t eat the grains or beans in it and will only eat the sprouted seeds. He is more of a seed addict since I got him as an adult and he was on an all seed diet for the first year of his life. He does eat some fresh veggies and pellets though but my other cockatiel definitely has a more varied diet.
Hi Sophie, I have purchased organic raw buckwheat groats and organic royal quinoa. Do I just soak the buckwheat in water to activate?. With the quinoa I purchased, can I just soak in water in a sprouting jar? Or do I need to add the apple cider vinegar? Is it crucial to the process? Much love, love your bird vids!! 😀🦜🦜🦜
If you are sprouting it when you need to use the ACV/ GSE to prevent bacterial growth, if you are servo them straight after soaking then you don’t need to use it 😊 and I’m glad you enjoy my videos! 💙
How can they be stored and how long in the frig? Can any sprouted mix be frozen or is that too mushy when thawed. ty Haha haaaa while holding the rinsed seeds to see their size watch as some look as if they are baby turtles swimming to the surface
I prefer not to freeze them as they do go a bit weird! I also don't store them in the fridge personally - I sprout enough to us eon day 1, 2 and 3 at different growth stages!
Thanks! That’s a great easy to follow video and gives me motivation to try sprouting. How long can you keep them once sprouted and how would you store them?
Hi Belinda, thanks for your lovely comment! It’s worth giving them a go, even if it takes a few tries to get them right! 😊 Personally I keep rinsing even when they're done and use for three days or bin when I see or smell that they've gone off. Some people will dry them out and store them in the fridge but I am more concerned with bacteria and mould that way! I always end up making too much as well but it's no big deal! I'm thinking of buying an extra jar so I can have more on the go but they don't have to have sprouts every day if things aren't sprouted in time!
BirdNerdSophie I will definitely give it a go, You’ve explained so well and made it look so easy. So once sprouted you can keep them in the jar on your bench for up to 3 days? Can I sprout my girls birdseed?
@@belindacarter3438 it's fine once you get the nag of it, but I definitely made a few mistakes when I was just starting out! Yes I just keep mine in the jar as normal and rinse twice a day when they are done, I find it keeps them fresher to keep rinsing! They should be fine for three days but just give them a smell - if they have no smell or smell like fresh salad then it's all good, any acidic or 'off' smell and bin them :) Possibly - what exact make does she have so I can check the ingredients?
BirdNerdSophie they don’t have a label on them. I got them from the pet shop when I brought my baby girl. Maybe I should leave the seeds, I don’t want to harm her. Thank you so much for answering my questions. I am a first time bird owner with so much to learn 💙
@@BirdNerdSophie this might be a silly question, but how do I know when they're done? Do I wait until they have leaves like for human sprouting or just until they have tails?
Thanks for the video Sophie, very informative! I have a question I hope you can answer, we are going to try sprouting following your way for the first time, but wondering how much do we feed 2 cockatiels, along side presume seed and fresh veg each day? Want to get the balance right. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! I usually give ours a heaped teaspoon of sprouted seeds plus veggies etc but you can chop and change depending on how much they eat! 😊
Different people do it in different ways! I always use ACV or GSE in the first soak, but you can also do the rinses and a dunk in GSE/ACV water before leaving to drain!
Hi Sophie, is it ok to feed at any stage of sprouting? Or must they have full tails? The mix i have is sprouting at a very varied rate and i dont want some to go over while waiting for the rest. I want to eat them myself!
This video is really cool, I love to sprout mung beans and chick peas to, for myself lol. I'm getting budgies next week. I've not found a video that says there OK for budgies... Would you know? 😊
Hello and thanks for your comment! Yes they are perfectly safe for budgies if sprouted in the way I show you in the video! How exciting - how many are you getting and what colourations? 🦜💙
@@BirdNerdSophie I'm just getting two birbs. They will be for me and I'll be taking full ownership. I have a only son who is 12yrs old and I thought it would be nice for him to have company, especially as they may be another lockdown, let's hope I get them asap lol. I'm in Derbyshire west Midlands. 😊
FellowshipWithFamily - Charlie may ah that’s fantastic! I think budgies are really underrated and make great pets! It will also be good for your son to learn about pet care and responsibility! 😊 Good luck and feel free to send any questions my way!
@BirdNerdSophie this is difficult to do with only one bird. The same with the chop. It is always too much and with the leafy greens I can't freeze it. I made this last chop last Saturday and I still have a lot left. He is just not a veggies bird but grains, legumes and crispy stuff and my home baked cookies he loves. 😊
Hello my lovely, hope you are well! Any of the ones mentioned in the video would be fine for macaws but I would probably go for the Best Bird Food Ever Wheat Free Sprouting Blend to start with as it has a few different bits in which will promote foraging! Also if your macaw likes nuts as treats, I highly recommend soaking them too, for example, soak organic almonds for 8-12 hours, rinse and serve - they are irresistible! :)

Hi. I watched your video and I like what I see. I have racing pigeons and was wondering if I could give sprouted seed for them as well. Please let me know if sprouted seeds to my birds. Just thought, if it's good for small birds like yours, can it also be good for myne. Awaiting your response.
I live in tropical climate. I cant feed sprouts sprouts go bad due to the hot climate. Should apple cider vinegar be enough to keep it from going bad at 35 C temperature? Can i sprout in the refrigerator?
You can sprout in the fridge but it can take longer! You could also use grapefruit seed extract for avoiding bacteria and mould growth! The key is to portion their food so they aren’t leaving lots so it doesn’t sit out!
@@BirdNerdSophie thanks for the reply. They arent gojng bad when leaving out for feeding they go bad during the sprouting process. I guess ill try it in the fridge. apple cider vinger is easily available so ill use that. Do i use it everytime i rinse? Do i dip the seeds in acv between rinses or just spray it on the seeds
@@shazainkhan9155 you normally just use the acv in the initial soak but I have found that dipping them in acv after each rinse has helped in warm weather!
I have no idea what amount to feed my barraband parrot….I thought I heard you say 1teaspoon twice a day….was that just seeds them supplement with veggies and fruit?
Hi there I love your videos. question well actually 2 is it ok to keep a cockatiel in the same cage with a Parakeet the cage is a flight cage. I have been trying to get my bird to like vegetables but he won't touch them and I don't know what to do 😁
Fluffy and Maya is only eating the seed/mung bean of the sprout and not eating the tail. Should I be worried? Ik that sprouts give protein so I'm wondering if they will still have protein if they don't eat the tail?
Hello! No white vinegar won’t work in the same way! And you’ll need to use either apple cider vinegar or GSE in the soak otherwise the risk of mould or bacteria is much higher!
I have been having a hard time sprouting I used apple cider vinger and I am still getting mold I've made so many batches for it to mold which get expensive is there any other factors to the mold I use the same jars you use I understand mold is very dangerous to our birds and can't seem to get mold free Sprouts
You can try GSE (grapefruit seed extract) instead of apple cider vinegar (8 drops). You can also sprout less at a time and give them a good shake in the jar to get a lot of the water out before setting them down to sprout! It can take a lot of practice to get it right with is okay! You could also just start with soaking - The Parrot Teacher has a great video on soaking seeds!
hello! I would like to know if green beans are safe for birds? This idea sounds interesting and green beans sprout quite easily so I would like to know if they are safe to give this a go!
Hi Hannah, thanks for your comment! I'd not thought of sprouting green beans before so I looked it up and I can't find any information specifically for parrots that says it's either safe or toxic to feed them sprouted (there are some beans and legumes that should never be sprouted!), so the fact that there is no information makes me think it's best not too. You could consider consulting an avian vet and asking for their input but I always think if there's not enough info on it, I'd rather not try it for the birds just in case! Here is a really great list of ideas of things to sprout! parrotfunhouse.com/blogs/parronting-essentials-blog/soaking-and-sprouting-for-birds-with-schedules? Sorry I couldn't have been more help!
Hi! On the list is mung bean which is also known as green bean~ I think it's a singaporean thing so it can be a tad confusing :) but yes green bean is safe for birds!
Hi Sophie. Can you help me what seeds do you recommend to use for soaking and sproating and where would you buy the seeds from I have 2 pineapple conures and an amazonian parrot
Hi Tony! There's quite a variety to choose rom - I get my info from parrot cookbooks by Karmen Budai! What country are you based in so I can recommend shops!
Hey! I have a question about the seeds that you can sprout. I’m trying out different sprouting kits but I need to know a little more information on what to sprout first.
@@studytielsofficial I recommend just having a trial run to start with! You can even eat them yourself 😁 Easiest ones are: Buckwheat: soak 15 mins, rinse twice a day. Quinoa: soak 2 hours, rinse 2-4 times a day Mung beans: soak 8 hours, rinse 2 times a day All of those three have a high success rate of sprouting!
could i ask ask what the apple cider vinegar is for i want to try soaked seed for my birds but a bit worried about the risks of bacterial get into the seeds
Hi Richard! The apple cider vinegar kills off any bacteria and mould spores in the soaking process! I was always worried about getting it wrong so I tried it a few times until I was confident I was getting it right! 😊
I do find when i give my cocktails sprouts, they become soooo hormonal 🤯 they are like - ohhh so much food, yammy - time to make babies 😂🤦 they are much calmer on pallets, some veggies, and seeds once in a while or for training purposes only.
Some birds can be sensitive to protein changes, but I do feel that sprouts are important, even if just a few as birds will need the protein in their diet for feather growth and bodily maintenance! :)
Hi Sophie! So I’ve done my first trial of growing broccoli sprouts and I got some unexpected results. They are growing white fuzzy hairs. I looked into it and they’re cilia hairs, not mold. Turns out they were too dehydrated. I was wondering (for future reference) are sprouts with cilia hairs safe for eating if I’m able to get rid of them, or are they a failed batch?
Hey! Cruciferous spirits like broccoli and kale naturally have cilia hairs that come out looking for water when they are slightly dry. Once you rinse them again, the hairs retract! They’re perfectly safe to eat and feed when sprouted correctly 😊
Hi! I am going to be a new cockatiel owner so I have been doing lots of research on diet & I would love to incorporate sprouting! How do you store the sprouts when they are not being served, and about how long do they last before they become unsafe to feed?
Hi Hannah, that's awesome! 😊 I keep the sprouts in the sprouting jar and continue to sprout the and serve each day from day 3 onwards! I usually make enough for 4 days worth and I have two jars on the go at the same time so the growing stages overlap if that make sense? I usually judge whether they are safe or not by smell - if they smell sour or acidic, they go straight in the bin!
Hi i have been wattching your videos but sprouting has got me lost which is ok cause i havent got my bird jet my little cockatiels but i want to give them the best i both to spouting jars please help!!!
Hi, Sophie. I just have one GCC and she's still a baby, just a little over 3 months. I've ordered an EZ sprouter. Can I sprout just 2-3 tablespoons worth at a time or will it not work right? Just trying to avoid tons of unnecessary waste.
@@BirdNerdSophie thank you for answering. I know you've got to be busy with your new flock member. Can't wait for you to introduce him or her to us! I also plan to eat some of the sprouts. 😄
Smells like a fresh salad.... lol I have no idea what that smells like xD I am finally going to give this a go. I found some canning jars I had extra of in a smaller size. So I can try sprouting smaller amounts. 3 different ones to sprout 3 different organic seeds I got off amazon. Seeing I have no idea how long each will take, I will write that down. Defiantly going to give it a few trys. Make sure they come out perfect. More worried about mold more so than anything. Didn't know about the apple cider vinegar thing. I might add that if I do smell molding issues of any kind. Oddly enough my birds have been sprouting their own seeds. 1 of the budgies seems to fling a random seed from the foraging area into their water fountain. Which starts to grow lol. I got everything separate in that blend. Was just more efficient cost wise for me. I am actually going to try and grow some of these plants next spring. Why not right? I live on a farm. Might as well use some of it for the birds. Had an herb garden, but it got a bit overgrown by the side growth. Everything grown here is organic in organic soil mind you. Just seems a waste to not grow your own plants, and harvest the seeds. Do you happen to know which herbs are better than others to give to your parrots? Have you ever made a herb box for the birds? I didn't even think about sprouting quinoa or chick peas! Oh yea, with my canning jars, I just used cheese cloth :) DIY where ya can, when you have the stuff on hand right?! :D Is it best to soak them for the first time during the day, or at night? for the 8-12 hours? After the soak you just leave them alone for a few days then, don't move the jar at all?
Haha, I think even if veggies aren;t your thing, you'll know when they're off as they won;t smell pleasant, and sometimes have a vinegary smell! If you have good seeds and follow the instructions, you shoudln;t have any issues with mould! But if in doubt, throw it out! Lol the boys sometimes like throwing pumpkin seeds in their water to soak too haha! Yes I also buy things separate sometimes too, but for owners who might not be as keen on the idea, the mixed blend makes it so easy so hopefully more people will give it a try. Oh absolutely grow them! If we could, we would! I'd love a little veggies and flower patch to grow things for them. Our flock's favourite herbs are rosemary and mint, but here's a list of all the safe ones, though all should be in moderation: ua-cam.com/video/CgZAFpzr2rk/v-deo.html Yes if you have spare jars and cheese cloth then go for it! I usually do the soak overnight as I find that the sprouts are ready when I want them this way. Usually 8-12 hours but it depends on the seed - the website above has soaking times for different sprouts (e.g. quinoa is 6 hours). Once they've soaked, rinse them as I do in the video, then leave them at the 45 degree angle so any excess water can flow out and air can get in, then rinse in the morning and in the evening and put back to the 45 degree angle!
What are the benefits of sprouting ones own seeds over buying sprouts from the local organic store a couple of blocks from my house? Is there any specific reason one should sprout ones own when they’re one of the least expensive things to buy at the market, or am I missing something?
If you can buy them then great as long as you’re confident that they are clean and organic! We don’t have organic stores that sell sprouts in blocks unless it’s cress so it’s not an option here!
@@BirdNerdSophie oh, I forget that not everyone lives where there are organic stores every few blocks. There’s actually a Whole Foods 3 blocks from my house. Even the floral bouquets they sell are advertised as “non-GMO & organic” 🤣, and they have several different kinds of organic sprouts, relatively inexpensive (compared to their other items), like $2 for enough to give to my 2 little guys for days and days, I’ll never use them all. I just thought there was a really specific reason why I needed to sprout my own seeds to be a bird person that I was missing. I bought all of the equipment and stunk up my kitchen, making it smell like someone died. And the birds prefer the stuff I buy because I’m just bad at figuring out that magic timing of when to stop “sprouting” them, & when to feed them to the birds. So much work for so little gain. Now I’m super bitter about all of the time I wasted doing sprouts when I could have been doing anything else lol Sorry thanks for listening to me vent
@@dorkusamericanus haha yep, I think there are some organic stores in city centres but not in regular towns! Sprouting can take a few goes to get right, and climate plays a part in it too! If you can buy the safely already sprouted then awesome- saves a lot of effort 😂
@@BirdNerdSophie oh yeah, totally. It’s super damp & foggy where I live too (San Francisco), and my kitchen in my apartment isn’t super well ventilated. The bird room is, tho, thankfully :)
I really enjoyed watching this video and it was really helpful!! I have a question, what other grains or seeds or lentils or legumes can I sprout? And I also heard that birds can drink herbal tea, is that true?
Hi Sara, thanks for your comment and glad you found it useful! There are lots of different things you can sprout, here is a list of some more: parrotfunhouse.com/blogs/parronting-essentials-blog/soaking-and-sprouting-for-birds-with-schedules Parrots can indeed drink herbal tea, but I only give mine tea that is ‘avian safe’ - the brand I use is from Polly’s Natural Parrot Boutique as it’s bird safe and caffeine free 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie I also have one more question. Do I need to use apple cider vinegar or grape seed extrac? Because I live in Egypt and that particular kind of apple cider vinegar may not be available
@@BirdNerdSophie would you offer dry seeds as well at the same time or is this a seed replacement? I do feed chop and fresh veg with overnight soaked seeds but not sprouted seeds.
Hi Sophie, is it OK to put my budgies sprouts in my processor? The only way I get them to eat veggies and sprouts is if I put them in the food processor.
You can to start with whilst you are getting them used to it but over time you’ll need to gradually decrease how chopped up it it! Also be aware that mushy food can trigger hormones!
Ok. Thanks, it is only the chic peas and the adzuki legumes. The budgies can't or won't eat them. Think I will slice them in half and see if the will go for it. Thank you for the warning about the hormones. I didn't think about that. Thank you again for your time.
Great video! I have a question though.. I have tried already two times to sprout BIO Quinoa from the Supermarket and every time they would smell acidic. I would rinse them and leave them overnight to soak. After that they would be washed 3 times a day. The last batch didn’t smell as strong as the first one but somehow I can’t get rid of all saponins.
@@BirdNerdSophie I tried it yesterday and it worked! At least until I went to sleep and today after I woke up, it had a mild smell and the water was veeery cloudy. Somehow everytime I shake the jar while there is no water in it and then fill it out with water, the water was always very cloudy.. Maan I just want to grow some for my birdies, why does it have to be this complicated 🤣
@@urosvujanovic7962 I do find that quinoa has to be rinsed loads of times! A little smell isn’t an issue though- no sprout will ever be without a faint scent!

I’m glad you liked it! You can’t offer white beans, and it depends what type of corn you have! Split peas shout be offered after 12 hours of soaking as they can’t sprout, but everything else is fine to sprout and doesn’t need to be cooked!

Yes your dove can absolutely have sprouted items 😊

pleasantly surprised to see best bird food ever ships to the US and for a reasonable expense too. definitely going to try them thank you.
after about how many days of the sprouts growing do you feed your birds?
It’s a US company 😊 I start feeding once the little white tails appear and I continue to feed until I’ve run out of that batch or they go off!
Hi. I am living in South Korea.
I have had a Hahn's Macaw that called "Wan Doo"
I don't experience 'sprouting'
Thanks for your Channel❤
Han’s macaws are so cute, that’s awesome!
Hello sofie!! Im unclear as to when to serve the sprouts.... after how many days of sprouting?
Hi Robert! Most sprouts will take 3 or for days to be ready to serve! It will depend on how warm your house is and the type of sprout! 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie That's a relief, thank you very much!!
Thank you!
It’s best to wait until the little tails are just peeking out before you serve! Congrats on your new birds 😊
Hi Laura!
The specific product is a marketed as a pet food but all of the ingredients in it plus the ones you mentioned are all safe to be sprouted and eaten by parrots and people 😊
Awesome video, thanks for the tutorial! Can I freeze them or does that ruin their nutritional value?
Freezing can alter the taste and texture which isn't that palatable for most bird so fresh is best :)
You can also use grapefruit seed extract in place of ACV 😊 sprouts need to be rinsed twice a day during the draining process!
@@videostar323 you could pay them dry with some kitchen towel as having some moisture in there is good for hydration 😊

How can they be stored and how long in the frig? Can any sprouted mix be frozen or is that too mushy when thawed. ty
Haha haaaa while holding the rinsed seeds to see their size watch as some look as if they are baby turtles swimming to the surface
I prefer not to freeze them as they do go a bit weird! I also don't store them in the fridge personally - I sprout enough to us eon day 1, 2 and 3 at different growth stages!
They looks really tasty...can us humans eat them / are they healthy for us too?
Yes they are very healthy for people! My favourites are alfalfa sprouts!
They should be fine for three days but just give them a smell - if they have no smell or smell like fresh salad then it's all good, any acidic or 'off' smell and bin them :)
Possibly - what exact make does she have so I can check the ingredients?
BirdNerdSophie they don’t have a label on them. I got them from the pet shop when I brought my baby girl. Maybe I should leave the seeds, I don’t want to harm her. Thank you so much for answering my questions. I am a first time bird owner with so much to learn 💙

Thank you so much for watching! I usually give ours a heaped teaspoon of sprouted seeds plus veggies etc but you can chop and change depending on how much they eat! 😊
Do you need to use the ACV with each rinse? Or just for the first soak?
Different people do it in different ways! I always use ACV or GSE in the first soak, but you can also do the rinses and a dunk in GSE/ACV water before leaving to drain!
Wonderful video!
Thank you so much! I hope you are having a great weekend! :)
Hi Sophie, is it ok to feed at any stage of sprouting? Or must they have full tails? The mix i have is sprouting at a very varied rate and i dont want some to go over while waiting for the rest. I want to eat them myself!

Yes 😊
Fluffy and Maya is only eating the seed/mung bean of the sprout and not eating the tail. Should I be worried? Ik that sprouts give protein so I'm wondering if they will still have protein if they don't eat the tail?
It doesn't matter that they don't eat the tail- the main nutrition will be in the bod of the legume!
Hey can i use white vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar. Can i soak them without vinegar at all?

I usually make enough for 4 days worth and I have two jars on the go at the same time so the growing stages overlap if that make sense? what are the easiest the best sprouts to feed cockatiels?
The easiest things to sprout are probably buckwheat and quinoa! I think my cockatiels' favourites are spelt and kamut :)
Smells like a fresh salad.... lol I have no idea what that smells like xD
I am finally going to give this a go.
Is it best to soak them for the first time during the day, or at night? for the 8-12 hours?
Our flock's favourite herbs are rosemary and mint, but here's a list of all the safe ones, though all should be in moderation: ua-cam.com/video/CgZAFpzr2rk/v-deo.html
Yes if you have spare jars and cheese cloth then go for it!
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you for the response. Going to give that a go tonight!
@@angsfeatheredfriends You're welcome! Good luck & let me know how you get on!

I wouldn't recommend freezing them as they're better fresh, and I don't refrigerate them, I just keep them growing in the jar and feed each day! 😊
Can you do this with normal budgie seads from the pet shop?
Hi Helen! Not normally as some seeds are treated so they can't sprout, and some are dangerous to sprout!
Now I’m super bitter about all of the time I wasted doing sprouts when I could have been doing anything else lol

I would rinse them and leave them overnight to soak. After that they would be washed 3 times a day. The last batch didn’t smell as strong as the first one but somehow I can’t get rid of all saponins.
Quinoa only needs to soak for 2 hours so maybe that's why!
@@BirdNerdSophie Even a little bit sour is okay?
is sprouted red sorghum safe on my african lovebirds?
Hey! No it’s not, there’s evidence to suggest that it can be toxic when soaked and sprouted!
@@BirdNerdSophie oh sad 😅 thank you 😊
can you sprout a normal bird seed mix? or is it processed so that it doesn't sprout
Most of them won’t sprout because of how they are processed or the quality of them! Also some ingredients won’t be able to be sprouted!
Can millet be sprouted?
Yea 😊
Thank u!!!
You're welcome!
