Ah, it is SO helpful to see you actually doing this rather than just reading instructions and then trying on my own. I had struggled with just HOW one was to pick up/make a st for each side, but SEEING how you do it, and now understanding I needed to be going under both sides of a st to make one, clarified things for me. And, as a "recovering perfectionist," I especially appreciated your casually saying that if one has a hole, just sew it up later. I don't have to feel guilty that my first two mittens had just such a problem. THANKS!
Love that thumb, plus your explanation was very clear. I've been knitting 50 plus yrs with a pattern from my gmas day. She passed at 102 yrs back in 1986.... Like this new thumb!
I discovered short dpns and they are wonderful for small numners of stitches that need to be knit in the round. They really help eliminate the fiddliness when knitting thumbs, sock toes etc. very nice tutorial Arnie. hint. Arnie i hear you say you get confused on the words Right and Left. This is how i taught my kids when they were little and learning left from right. remember what hand you eat and write with, that Is either your left or right..... Once you remember the name of the hand you eat with , the left and right confusion will go away.
I really owe you a huge debt. I was not able to use dpns until I watched your videos. Because of previous injuries using 9 inch circulars is the best way for me to knit socks, and soon my first mittens, without so much pain that I have to stop frequently. However you reach a point where you have to switch to magic loop to finish decreasing if you're unable to use dpns. To put it plainly, that sucks. But now I can switch to dpns and finish the socks quick enough that pain is avoided, and I'm no longer stretching my yarn to its limit and damaging it. Because of you guys I can now attempt my first mittens and gloves. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!💖💕💞!
Me too! Well fifty years ago I was knitting like mad, from illustrations in books, then a life of work..until now and I am rediscovering the absolute pleasure of making things by knitting
So glad you are here, I am in the UK , I can follow you, you are so soothing and you knit English style. I made socks for the first time with your yarn too. Lots of mistakes but I am thrilled to make them! Mittens next!
I love your vidoes, I always learn something. After all the mittens I have knit, I never thought to shape the top of the thumb like that. I think it looks much better. Thank you.
'Knit to fit' the best advice ever. The pattern is straightforward and the scrap yarn thumb provides a seamless join. Thank you for taking the mystery out of mittens, perhaps I'll try gloves next! 🤔
Dear Arne & Carlos - thank you for another lovely video. I am enjoying watching you both very much. In the video where you showed us your vintage jumper collection you said we should comment if we recognised a piece inspired by Arne's grandmother's jumper. So that is what this comment is for. The cardigan Carlos is wearing I think the detail across the chest/shoulders looks like the pattern and also the cuff detail. Thank you again for all your hard work and delightful designs.
Every time I watch one of your videos I walk away with new knowledge, picking up stitches from scrap yarn for the thumb, which I appreciate greatly. Please keep up your videos I do enjoy them so much!!!
Thank you for your reply. You were so kind to repeat the instructions again. My mistake was to find the (bottom) Search engine. Then only put mittens, not mitten pattern. I’m so sorry for putting you to repeating the information. You all are so nice . I watched your interview with Miss Glass and Loved it. Thanks again, 🇺🇸 Sally
Thank you so very much for your delightful, informative fun videos! You make learning so much fun! I just love you both and can’t wait for more videos! God’s blessings be with you always!🤗💖
Thank you for this video. I'm so hooked on your videos that I can hardly wait for a new one. Then I tell my knitting group to watch your new videos as they come out. Thanks for sharing so generously. Hugs from Canada.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Julius Tate Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I am so fascinated with your knitting as l am a 1st time knitter self taught off UA-cam lol people have told me l should start with knitting a scarf l jumped in the deep end & have attempted to knit a sweater
Oh I am going to make some mittens! I usually knit them flat! They look just like yours! But I am going to do four needles you two are amazing! Brilliant teachers x
Love you guys! I have a question about the written pattern. After Row 20 for the left hand it says to knit 20 rnds but for the right hand it says to knit 32 rnds. Wouldn't this make the left hand shorter than the right? I am knitting them now and that's the only thing I can't make sense of. Please help. :)
When knitting scrap yarn in for your thumb hole do you cut the working yarn and re-attach it or do you carry it with the scrap yarn through the stitches? Arne, I ❤️LOVE❤️the sweater you’re wearing, do you sell a pattern fo it?
Thanks for the video! I noticed as Arne was picking up stitches for the thumb that on the top of the waste yarn he picked up the right side of the stitch and later knit through it normally. However, on the bottom of the waste yarn he picked up the left leg and later knit it through the back loop. I imagine this has something to do with making the transition into the thumb as smooth as possible. Would you all be willing to explain what you are doing there and why? Thanks!
Arne Carlos you both are my favourite. I like your V-Neck jumper Arne. It's looking really very nice. Could you please explain how you made it like how you picked neck stitches?
Savita Singh Arne and Carlos almost never wear their own designs, instead they prefer to wear pieces from their extensive collection of vintage knit wear. The sweater Arne is wearing is not knitted by him, it's from late 70s or early 80s.
Disappointed that your yarn does not seem to be available in Australia - perhaps the market is too small? However will get some Pairfect yarn on line soon. I have just knitted my first sock and very pleased with the result.
Hi Linda, you can find the written patter on the website arnecarlos.com. In the blog section you just type in the name of the episode in the search field.
Is it possible to use small circular needles and stitch markers instead of double pointed needles. I have trouble manipulating all the small needles due to arthritis.
I myself use circular needles for sox and mittens both. Just divide your pattern in half and put half of the stitches on each needle. Also, I never use anything less than a 32" circular for ease of handling.
Looks nice but the fact that a direct link to the blog instructions is missing, so skipping away to find another tutorial. Thank you and merry xmas time
I love your videos!! I have a question about the needle size you have on the blog. It says U.S. size 2 - 3 / 3 and 3,5 mm. Does this mean 2.75 mm and 3.25 mm needles? Thank you so much! You guys are fabulous!
I luv U2, when i was a kid my favorite mittens were sweet brown& grey& black& red raccoons😍😍😍,kind of like puppets. I dream of having another pair. Omg idk tho all those pointy needles, the thumb was a shorter sortof triangular red mouth so dang cute. Animal puppet mittens. Raccoons🐻🐑🐏🐐🐶🐒🐴
Hi Arne & Carlos , I recently start watching you, very nice video”s you doing thank you very much all you time giving us a good tips to. One thing I want to ask you on mitten you made thumb you put the waste yard, what you do with the running yarn? Are you cut it then join it again? If you can answer this I be grateful please. Thank you very much. Kind regards.
Hi Cindy, if you have a look in the blog section and find the post that relates to this video you might find it there. If not it is not available anymore, this is an old video.
So I’m still kind of a noob at this. Is this considered an afterthought thumb or a gusseted thumb? The increases confuse me. I’ve been watching mitten videos all day
I love to make them for my family, and I like your designed yarn very much, but I am in Shanghai, China, if I purchase the yarn, can it be expressed to me directly? I checked your website, it seems there is no China can be chosen.
Why do you knit into the back of your knit stitch as opposed to knitting into the front leg of the knit stitch? The stitches come out looking the same as when they are knitted into the front?
Ah, it is SO helpful to see you actually doing this rather than just reading instructions and then trying on my own. I just started a pair of mittens today! I was not sure about how to do the thumb so this was a great help. Thank you so much!
Love that thumb, plus your explanation was very clear. I've been knitting 50 plus yrs with a pattern from my gmas day. She passed at 102 yrs back in 1986.... Like this new thumb!

Just started mittens. I know how to make them but with this video I feel cosy in your company and get lovely colour ideas.
You make me feel like I can do anything! No more mitten fear.
I just discovered you two and working on watching all your videos. I'm a self taught knitter, 60 years ago, and love knitting socks and sweaters.
Me too! Well fifty years ago I was knitting like mad, from illustrations in books, then a life of work..until now and I am rediscovering the absolute pleasure of making things by knitting

Thank you for all of the inspiration. I watch each video several times because I enjoy them so much and learn so much.
In my youth in the West of Scotland we called them pockies they look fantastic guys x
Thank you guys, this is a great way to do a thum
The yarn is STUNNING ❣️
I’ve worn out my sock knitting mojo for the time being but still have so much beautiful sock yarn in my stash. Now I can go crazy with mittens!
Do it!
'Knit to fit' the best advice ever. The pattern is straightforward and the scrap yarn thumb provides a seamless join. Thank you for taking the mystery out of mittens, perhaps I'll try gloves next! 🤔
We are glad you found it useful!
Dear Arne & Carlos - thank you for another lovely video. I am enjoying watching you both very much.

děkuji za video - tento postup je pro mě nový - ráda se přiučím :-)
Love how you make the thumb, it was like watching a magic trick! 🤣 I'll definitely have to try this one. 👍👍
Every time I watch one of your videos I walk away with new knowledge, picking up stitches from scrap yarn for the thumb, which I appreciate greatly. Please keep up your videos I do enjoy them so much!!!

Hi Charlene, that is quite an accomplishment. Keep us updated on your progress!
Oh I am going to make some mittens! I usually knit them flat! They look just like yours!
But I am going to do four needles you two are amazing! Brilliant teachers x
Good luck with your project!
jeg går på skole langt hjemmefra, så jeg setter kjempe pris på videoene deres når jeg ikke har mammas ekspertise i nærheten! :) tusen takk!
Så bra!
Thanks a bunch!....If you use various scrap yarns, how do you deal with all those separate ends? Weave in as you go or.....?
Can I use circulars instead of dpn? Y'all r great teachers. Love Arne with his "tongue" for thumb. ☺️
You can do the magic loop method
Do you ever do a thumb gusset? I really like the way you do the thumb. I always seem to get holes.
Pretty, pretty... 😍
This is so cool. Schachermeyer is just around the corner from where I live. I really love their yarn. So cool that you design for this firm.
Thank you so much!!! 💞 Liebe Grüße Christine
To knit the mittens on double pointed needles is one of my autumn challanges... 🙈😁🍂🍃🍁🌧
Good luck!
@@ARNECARLOS Thanks, guys! I try to do my best... 🤩
Ups ingen UFO😂😂
Jeg har lige lavet tre ting færdig i weekenden🖒
Fantastisk videoer😊
Excellent video! I LOVE the cardigan Carlos is wearing - is that a pattern I can buy?
We are afraid not.
Working on stranded mitten pattern....using the magic loop method on my circular needles....don't plan to stress too much...keep the madness simple
Hi James, good luck with your mittens!
very nice! would it be possible to make same type of mittens with circular needles?
Do you mean by using the magic loop method? If you prefer that to DPNS then that should be okay.
Hey that’s the silver on the tea tray that Arne polishes in the future
When knitting scrap yarn in for your thumb hole do you cut the working yarn and re-attach it or do you carry it with the scrap yarn through the stitches? Arne, I ❤️LOVE❤️the sweater you’re wearing, do you sell a pattern fo it?
Look forward every Sunday for your videos. How many hours do you spend knitting each day? Love from New Hampshire, usa
lt nice color ty
thank you for the instructions.
Thanks!
When he knits through the back loop it is because the stitches he picked up are twisted , this untwists them.
No holes at the base of the thumb....a miracle
😀
Arne Carlos you both are my favourite. I like your V-Neck jumper Arne. It's looking really very nice. Could you please explain how you made it like how you picked neck stitches?
Savita Singh Arne and Carlos almost never wear their own designs, instead they prefer to wear pieces from their extensive collection of vintage knit wear. The sweater Arne is wearing is not knitted by him, it's from late 70s or early 80s.
Found it! There is Arne's grandmother's sweater re-imagined!
Disappointed that your yarn does not seem to be available in Australia - perhaps the market is too small? However will get some Pairfect yarn on line soon. I have just knitted my first sock and very pleased with the result.

Hi! I couldn't find this pattern on your blog. Could you please give the link? Thanks so much
Hi Sandra, all the patterns have newly been moved to the shop. Best wishes ARNE & CARLOS
Going to change to 5 Dpns like you guys. I have BIG feet. Trying on socks with only 3 needles is worrisome at best DISASTER at worst :) Love my DPNs!
Thank you for watching!
The mitten pattern is no longer on your blog? How do I get the pattern?
Looks nice but the fact that a direct link to the blog instructions is missing, so skipping away to find another tutorial. Thank you and merry xmas time

Does anyone know what dpns they are using? Would help me a lot!
Hi, here is a link to the pattern. There you will find which number dpns they are using; arnecarlos.com/how-to-knit-a-pair-of-mittens/
I love to make them for my family, and I like your designed yarn very much, but I am in Shanghai, China, if I purchase the yarn, can it be expressed to me directly? I checked your website, it seems there is no China can be chosen.
Thank you!
I need to have a real good pattern for headband
Never have seen a thumb done this way, and want to try it, but I'm not seeing the written pattern in the link below..., anybody know where it's at?
Hi Mindy, we are redoing our website so a few of our older patterns haven't been uploaded. Check out the shop in our website for patterns.
Why do you knit into the back of your knit stitch as opposed to knitting into the front leg of the knit stitch? The stitches come out looking the same as when they are knitted into the front?
It gives the stitch a different look
Do mittens need to be blocked?
We always steam our knitwear.
do you do crochet mittens
Could you do more crochet items please? 😊
I wish my husband knitted....
Do you have a pattern for a one year old?
No, not at the moment.
Trying mitten pattern.
Good luck!
there is the pattern again!
Blog? I couldn’t understand on the video
