  • I started making Selbu mittens last year and several people asked if I could make a comprehensive tutorial, so here it is! Since it's a process with several steps, I will break this tutorial up into a series of videos and blog posts.
In this first video, we will...
Review the materials and pattern (minutes 0.00 - 6.47)
Learn to cast on and work on double-pointed needles (minutes 6.47 - 14.14)
Get the first two rows of the mitten cuff started (minutes 14:14 - end)
If you're new to knitting Selbu (Norweigian/Scandinavian) Mittens, I would suggest checking out this post as a resource before you get started...
Making Selbu Mittens |Tips for Beginners - missmustardseed.com/making-kn...
    Supplies Needed
Rauma Strikkegard Yarn in two colors (two skeins of white or cream and two in a preferred contrasting color.) This is where I buy my yarn online - www.ingebretsens.com/shop/cra...
The colors used in this tutorial are 101 (off-white) and 146 (gold.)
    Size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needles - bit.ly/3AwFPjX
    Scissors
    Low-tack artist tape - bit.ly/3qWxjHX
    1 large safety pin - bit.ly/3bx7TMk
    1 large blunt needle - bit.ly/3BHc4Qo
    Pattern for the cuff -
With cream or white yarn, cast on 56 stitches and distribute across four double-pointed needles (size 2/2.75mm) so there are 14 stitches per needle
Knit, knit, purl, purl (kkpp) pattern in cream/white to make 6 rows
Pick up second yarn color and kkpp pattern two rows
pick up white/cream yarn and kkpp pattern for two more rows
Repeat until there are five colored stripes
Add with six more rows in white/cream of kkpp pattern before starting knitting pattern.
Finish the cuff with one more row of white/cream yarn in a knit stitch. 7 stitches into each needle, increase 1 stitch. With four stitches added in that row (one on each needle), there will be a total of 60 stitches and you're ready to start the mitten pattern or your choosing.
And here are two great pattern books, which are optional -
Winter Knits from Scandinavia - bit.ly/3rP8Gfw
Mittens from around Norway - bit.ly/3rP8Gfw
Part two will be coming soon! We will finish the cuff and start the pattern. I would suggest practicing and mastering casting on, distributing the yarn between four needles, and knitting the cuff, so you're ready to move on when the next video drops.

Thank you for the visual. I didn’t know how to use 4 needles. 👍

Sure thing! It really is easier than I thought it would be and I like how it divides the pattern, especially when you get the colorwork part of the pattern.

Fantastic tutorial, thank you. I checked. The yarn you use is 3ply. Trying to find similar at a charity shop

When adding the color on the cuff, do you hide it (like you did on the second video)? Or do you cut the yarn and add the next color? Just curious how to do the color change

may be a dumb question, but can you knit these mittens using circular needles instead of the four needles? I've just started this as a new hobby so I don't know a single thing! XD

I only have four double pointed needles, so I’m adapting a little. I’m trying to mentally calculate where you would be at the beginning of the second round. Are you starting the second round with purls or knits? Ie should the second row be purling the first row’s knits or should the knit stitches all stack and the purl stitches all stack? (Or should I give up and buy a set of five needles? 😅)

The pattern is always kkpp no matter if they are on three or four needles. Because you're dividing 56 by three, you will have an uneven number on your needles, so it's more important to just keep track of the pattern. I do think you will want a five-needle set because the mitten will get wider and flatter. That might be a lot to distribute over three needles.

Hello! When I try to knit selbu mittens with over 50 stitches in total, they turn out super wide, almost the width of a thigh. Even though I am using correct size needles and yarn. What do you think could be the problem and how can I fix it?

Ha! Well, it takes several hours to make each mitten, so if people want to make several for gifts, it's a good time to get started.
