Well then he is a fool. I've seen several medical professionals and physiotherapists over the course of 4 Yrs for sciatica onset and flair-ups and every single one advised shortened stride and slower speed to lessen impact. I challenge ANYONE to walk with a long stride while suffering with active sciatica, hell I challenge them to just stand upright for 5 mins

You have been suffering for 4 years so clearly that isn't working for you.
I am a runner and fast walker. Running can't solve the problem. Walking with short stride and slowly really gives comfort of walking. Long strides doesn't give any pain while walking, but there is no any sign of improvement.
Slow walking is best in sciatica
