      I agree. This doctor has so much great information. I've had severe sciatica for 5 years. My doctor's only worry about patients over dosing on pain meds. I refuse to take injections. No
      way. I might try the implant for pain. At least do the 1 week trial. Good Luck everyone ❤

I had an op L5, S1...herniated disk at age 39. I am 65 years old now, moved from a warm climate to UK and have been suffering tremendously...until now!!!! I have been doing your glute and abdominal excercises and today was the first day in weeks that I did not take anti inflammatories or pain killers!!!! I have watched numerous videos, doing the exercises you said one shouldn't. You are such a blessing and I am sooooo grateful to have found your site. Thank you so much for all the insightful info!!! This is the best advice I’ve had on sciatica. I’ve been to many physios that have made my pain worse, one even viscously pinches all the way down my legs, she broke veins in my legs, my legs were black and blue. Most treatments you said, I’ve done. My pain is coming from a fractured disk in my back 15 years ago, it’s been pushed in and pressing on a nerve. I’ve been offered a 7 hour operation, and refused I’m 76 I’ll always have this pain, but exercise is the key. I follow your exercise, go to a seniors exercise class once a week, I do take pain killers. Thank you David 🙏 I find your videos are the very best.

      Wendy, sorry to hear you have similar problem as I! Which pain killers work? I have had 6 months of Physical Therapy but made it worse. I have had 3 steroid shots at L 3/4 and L 5/6 and in pimaformis muscle but nothing has worked. I am over 60. It is now 4 years since I started seeing a orthopedic surgeon who advised me to do so, and still no relief. I have been given prednisone steroid meds before and tried Galapentin and Lyrica but could’ not stand the side affects! My pain is 8. - 10 about 100% of the time. Have to take a sleeping pill at night. Use ice and heating pad all day. I am working from home.

      @@camillemousseI use Naproxin for inflammation, as it had the fewest side effects. It is not helping much with the pain and discomfort. What does help....massage! I was lucky to find a massage therapist (LMT) with a specialty: muscular medical practitioner (MMP). She can dig in deep, target tense muscles and free up bound nerves. This allows chiropractic adjustments to 'settle in'. This is definately a hurts-so-good treatment, but it is the only thing that has helped me. Hope you find some relief!

    Been suffering for two weeks now. I was doing some stretches before we left for vacation. And nothing was helping. I got worse and worse. I went to the doctor and he prescribed prednisone muscle relaxer and hydrocodone. The only comfort I get is laying on my back with my knees, vent and pillows underneath I cannot walk I cannot stand, and when I’m in a spasm or flare, the only thing I can do is lay on my back and let everything calm down because the pain is so bad. Your exercise video did help me a lot and the one that felt the best was the rocking on hands and knees.

    Wow! I'm in the southeast corner of Idaho, and all the doctors & those they've sent me to over the last 10+ years have done exactly what this man has said NOT to do! Lots of people doing videos here on UA-cam doing the same thing! Thank goodness this video popped up in my feed .. divine timing right there! Yes, I've been on meds but I did injections for years..now the stenosis or something my doctor did the last time hurt so bad I was literally bawling my eyes out by the time I left! I refused to keep doing them after that! I've been dealing with many other structural issues causing shifting for years.. both hips replaced in the summer of 2016, now a foot with 3 bones in the middle causing me to walk on the inside of it. In turn causing the knee to twist in & all kinds of issues. I am always in terrible pain and I really don't believe the people I've been seeing anymore. They've had years to help me heal, get stronger & better.. yet here I am fighting myself and mustering all my energy just to shower or a simple chore per day.. then I'm really hurting & down for a few days before I can do anything again. I am thankful for people like this guy coming out with good information and help. Thank you, sir , for being so kind hearted & generous and sharing this information! 🙏💜

  • @robinmuchow
    @robinmuchow 4 місяці тому +21

    PT showed me a ridiculous fix for sciatica that actually WORKS! Lie on your stomach, have another person put their hands on your sacrum/lower waist. Move hands away from each other, one toward the head, one toward the feet, brushing along the body. PT did it lightly- my husband does it like it’s punishment. Feels good either way. Sounds stupid- works immediately. I’m an xray tech and nurse, my husband is a radiologist. We laughed right up until my pain quit. Now I have him ‘stretch me’ all the time. I have had herniated L5S1 for about 25 years; two microdiscectomy (2021, 2022) when I couldn’t stand the pain and didn’t yet know about the technique PT taught me.

    Three years ago I had a dance injury which has now developed into a sciatic issue. It suddenly worsened significantly over the past year. It’s so confusing because when one issue resolves the pain moves to another area. I can only describe my situation as feeling like I need to learn to walk again. The leg which has sciatic pain is constantly sore and recently the knee has become very weak and unsteady. My situation is very scary, but this video seems to explain why my coordination is so off. At the same time, i was going to the dentist for some teeth work, after fixing like 4 teeth, i had pain all day, so the dentist told me to take some antibiotic shot in the butt to ease the pain, anyways, i went to the pharmacy, and the dude there gave me the shot on the same side of the nerve pain, i immediately felt the shot like a small tough ball that is stuck in my butt, it lasted for 15 minutes, then it went away, immediately after that, the nerve pain disappeared, i could bend, stand, do whatever, there was no pain at all! yes ! just like magic, i don't know if these 2 are related, but definitely right after the shot i was cured, and now, a week later, i haven't felt a thing!
    maybe some real doctor can explain this, hopefully there is a scientific explanation to what happened.

    Just wanted to share what helps my pain. On all 4s and do the fire hydrant exercise. Extend your leg up as high as you can once warmed up with a few reps. Hike your leg up with knee bent at a 90° hold and repeat, and feel your muscles pump up in the glutes hips and hamstrings. This helps strengthen and cushion everything in the tailbone and glute areas and I feel less uncomfortable and stronger when I walk around and do things after this exercise. Can also lay on your side to do this same leg hike motion. Just keep you feet touching as if theyre a hinge as you hike your leg up, hold and repeat. You got this

    Thank you for this video. I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago and developed sciatica from resting in the recliner too long. It’s horrific. The pain is so intense in the morning that I’m literally screaming while I’m trying to get to the bathroom. It hurts all the time, but mornings are the worst. I have a PT evaluation this week and it seems there isn’t a one size fits all approach to this problem. Thanks to this video, I have some insight on what and what not to do when she sets up a treatment plan for me.

We are so sorry to hear that you've been dealing with sciatica! 🥺The pain from sciatica can be so relentless and sometimes even over-the-counter medication doesn't even take the edge off. "Sciatica Pain Exercises & Stretches"
      ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR.html
      Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.

But by the third, I was basically, back to normal. It's been about 9 months now, and I'm walking miles, every day just like before. Lifting and working out, like before. Just take it easy at first. And don't do any exercises / stretches, that cause severe pain..your body will heal with good, diet, rest, time. Start walking when you can get past the pain...start doing the stretches that don't cause severe pain. Begin working out , but moderate it, slowly and gradually, you'll be pain free, and back to normal. Btw I am 49 years old, and fairly fit, avid walker, eat healthfully, that may have something to do with it . I didn't do drugs or doctors. Only aspirin for about a month.

    Hi Dr Dave, I have just started using trekking poles to walk with around my property, and I instantly felt the difference in my posture while walking... but I also instantly felt sciatic pain! It is the only difference in my life that coincides. I am wondering if you think a tens machine will help at all? I will try as many things as I can but I am 64 years old and already have massive back pain for which I take heavy pain relief. I just want to be able to walk without pain :(
    Any advice is very gratefully received.
    PS I dont want to give up the trekking poles as I am trying to walk for my health and need the stability they offer. Thanks

    Age 74. Obese. Not a surgery candidate. Started out on a cane with pain in the greater trochanter area and using a cane just for stability. Lateral x-rays showed no hip issues; frontal view shows severe hip arthritis. Yes. My hips do hurt and click and snap...but the majority of my pain is not from my hip. Lower back x-rays shows very minor compression. Did PT for 6 months. I got progressively worse (believe the PT did their best; things that help hip, hurt sciatica or ???? and vice versa. They felt like they had no direction to go for both.) to where now I'm 100% walker dependent. I walk like Frankenstein. It takes me 6 minutes to walk 100 steps. All the things you noted not to do for hip or sciatica I've been doing. All that to ask...which of your videos do you suggest I start with. Thank you. I think your channel is a godsend. It's been a long and very painful year. I'm still working because I must but I can't drive any more because getting in a vehicle is quite the feat.

    This was soooo informative. Thank you so much for putting this together. I'm going to look at your other videos. I wish I lived in your area, you'd be getting a NEW complex patient to unravel 😂
    Long story: I have a couple bulging discs and DDD for which the neurosurgeon "suspects" is causing the numbness, tingling down my legs and inability to walk or stand more than 10 min that is relieved by bending and resting on a counter or sitting. (that was a couple of years ago). I went to PT but it didn't really help. The PTA helped the most and said my right SI tilts, which she couldn't get to stay and my muscles are so tight she couldn't get them to release. Now I have severe sciatica in both legs that is getting bad, especially at night. I found a chiropractor that does myofacial release and prescribes exercises, but I haven't made an appt. I know I need someone that can unravel the causes and treat in a proper series to not cause additional harm. Any advice?

    What a fantastic talk Dr. E.P. Manual. You have described all, and more, of what I have discovered too, with the help of my Intuition and with some medical knowledge together with listening to my back and leg pain after falling off a ladder onto concrete 3 years ago. Not just breaking but "exploding" my upper thigh bone. So good to listen to all your advice covering treatment for sciatica. So very much needed to hear you. Thank you. I shall certainly follow your advice on what I wasn't sure of. ❤

      I’ve been in horrible pain for 7 weeks now and I find so much info either overlaps or is so vastly different I’m confused and don’t know which way to go. I have numbness in my leg from the knee to the foot. This makes driving painful and kinda scary. I’m just starting to lose Hope & feel like I’ll be in pain forever!!! All I take is Ibuprofen but it doesn’t help my pain and is probably killing my liver. Would you recommend some type of X-ray to find out the source of the problem?

      Hey Angela! We're so sorry that you are suffering from pain due to sciatica. We know how not only painful but frustrating it can be to deal with. Especially since it had gone away for a little bit.
      When you begin these exercises, we suggest to start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
      Below will be our entire Sciatica playlist that will include exercises and stretches than can help:

    Thanks!

    I love your videos!! I have problems from neck to toe, including numbness in right ring and pinky fingers, scoliosis in cervical and lumbar spine, prior fusion surgery at L4-L5 and L5-S1, have spinal cord stimulator in lumbar spine, hip bursitis in both hips, pain from left hip radiating up left side of back (they say it's myb ack because x-rays show hip joint is great, but when the strength of my stimulator is lowered, the pain goes around to my groin). I also have sciatica that goes from my butt to my feet quite ofte (especially when sitting on the toilet). And to top it off, I have swollen legs and feet, and I am always complaining about cold feet and toes.
    Can you give me any advice on where I should even START?
    There is just so much. I've been through PT for my neck twice now, and there is no relief 😢

    Hey doctor, what do you think about using TENS to relieve the sciatica pain? does it run the risk of irritating the nerves in the long term and is it a good idea to use it at all?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Рік тому +3

      Hi Shynn, Great question! It can be helpful for relief but everybody's body composition is different so what works for one person may not work for another. If you feel any discomfort please step back from the TENS machine. In case you are interested we have a video discussing the pros and cons of the TENS machine. I have a sciatica issue too. If ur having one pls drink much water you will surely be relieved within a short time. I came here because I have not consulted any doctor that know my issue here in Nigeria. Whenever I'm describing it to them I feel like they do not get me well enough to check me out and give me the well deserved medication or sth. Fortunately, when I'm constantly drinking much water I feel like I have never had it before but I do drink like 500-700 CL a day and boom when i feel like it is not anywhere close to me again i reduce drinking water till i wouldn't know when it comes back then recontinue. I will be glad if there is any permanent solution for it though because I get tired of drinking too much water sometimes.
