I own a 2013 international prostar with Maxx Force engine on it. It's been 7 months since I've been doing East coast and west coast without any major problems and I haul 43.000 lbs going up to a lot of hills I mean big tall mountains and people still say to me that my truck is bad and I always say back to them my truck is good.

Great video and I always value your experience and opinion.
Due to an injury, I had to quit driving after 30 years. Waiting for my 4th knee operation soon, then I'll be ready to work in an office... I hope.
At any rate, the only experience I have with MAXXforce is the company I worked for bought 20 brand new in 2011. Three of them had issues, turbo mostly, but one blew the engine at 35,000 miles and the driver was fired, come to find out it was the engine's issue.
But! I've followed the path of the MAXXFORCE, and I believe 90% of the issues were when the trucks were brand new, like my employer's trucks. I think by 150,000 miles or so the bugs are worked put and the used MAXXFORCE trucks are a great value.
Just an old timers 2 pennies opinion for what it's worth.

I drove a 2013 pro star with the Maxxforce, I haul containers over weight 91,000 lbs from Va to Ohio with no problems, I heard all sort of bad things but to sum it up, it was a good truck, I had my Def filter cleaned twice, how ever they are not made for short runs, I got a freightliner Century now, but I like the pro star as well, I never seen a truck that didn’t break down, great buy, stay on top of your PM’s

I've been driving for a while and the only bad thing I've heard from drivers and close friends of mine that are mechanics at dealerships,is the DPF filters and I've seen the damage on the systems where they burn holes straight through the filter while hanging out at the shops.
But,I've never heard any complaints on performance, routine maintenance nor fuel economy on the Maxx force engine from a mech nor driver.

I bought a 2014 N13 from a dealer in 2018 with. 200,000 aftermarket warranty and the engine warranty. I paid it off after 2 years. Still going strong. The warranty covered everything before expiration. I never haul over 33000 but, I run OTR. I'm grateful for my equipment. Wouldn't be employed today if it wasn't for that business decision. My truck had 378000 miles and now it has 603000. I changed all fluids and maintenance it well. Never deleted.

Well, the reality is that they do tend to give owners a lot of problems.
It's useless to get into details because it doesn't change anything. My brother got one and it was a headache like we have never seen before.
Took engine out, put in a Detroit, rewire and no more issues since. I'm sure that with all the bad rep most of them can't be bad, just that there are enough to get us all scared.
But, if you buy it that cheap the way you calculated it is a very smart gamble. Why not.
I would do it too, but it wouldn't be my starter truck. I would buy a few to extend a fleet. You might be lucky and pick good ones.
You can also get one with the ISX, drop a new turbo and run it like you hate it.
They all give you issues. Macks and ISX with the damn turbo issues; I remember C13s cracking blocks; The legendary N14s and VE D12s with the frequent injector harness bullshit....whatever.
I just got a Volvo with a D12 this weekend. Guess what? There's gonna be a case with injector harnesses inside that truck if I don't find another option.
    F*ck it.

in Their fleet . Max Force mtrs. no exception ! I'm pretty sure that had a lot to do with those trucks performance ( but , it was still a pain

I've seen those sleeper maxforce trucks that were 5 to 7 years old with 350k or less miles. My logic tells me they most likely were in the shop a lot to have that low of a mileage on them. On the other hand, I know people that modified them and they were reliable trucks. If you bought one and it crapped out with 300k miles, you might could put a remanned D60 in it and you could basically have an aerodynamic glider for half of what it'd cost on the market. Have you ever heard of anyone doing this?

    Peace
I live in NYC. I have local routes thru out the Boros. The winters here can be brutal. Its unfortunate tht i haveseen alot of people go the Maxx force route and have to be towed out of a dock because there trck won't start. I have seen guys take a load, and flooring it and the trk barely hits 50 mph.
I also have seen it work out as well, not all trcks have these issues.
I personally couldn't risk it. I need a certain type of performance out of a vehicle..
I paid alot more and yes I have payments. I'm not a mechanic and don't want to spend alot of time and money dealing with them. Nt to say I don't go to mechanic. But I need to focus on customer satisfaction, and driver and vehicle conference.
First trck 2007 international jst before the Maxx force, 2nd trck 2015 after the maxx force.
    Hope this was helpful.
    Peace!!!!

The Maxx Force was a fraudulent design that’s why they don’t make it anymore and why the EPA Find them millions of dollars. That said, the best truck to buy is the one YOU can afford. Y’all don’t let people tell you not to buy a Ford, international, Volvo etc. buy what you can afford if it’s an older truck, do short runs, build up your money and buy something better. You didn't seem to heed any of the warning signs. That really bothered me. No engine is perfect but, you took a chance on the mother of all poorly designed engines. I honestly believe if you had been a driver with a lot of experience, you would have ran from this engine. I have my stories about this engine too. I'll count this video as a lemon. Did you read the lawsuits from the EPA?
Those trucks go for $6-7000 all day long at auction. Before you guys buy any truck get the ECM report. David your gut is wrong. They lied about the technology to the EPA and the fleets, that’s why every truck has the same problem. That said, as he stated look at YOUR operation and find a truck that fits the job. Why get a $150,000 truck when a $15 thousand dollar truck will get the job done. Just google Maxforce lawsuits and you’ll have real information rather than opinion. I know people who bought them, ran them until they broke and sold the parts for more than they paid for the truck, then just bought another one.

    • @TruckingFromScratch
      @TruckingFromScratch  4 роки тому +2

I took a risk on buying the trucks based on the assumption that not every truck had those problems & my trucks didn’t have those problems, so not sure what you’re saying I’m wrong about. I agree with you about checking the report; that why I mentioned it in the video as well. The bigger picture of this video is about the importance of having a method of making decisions, not really about maxxforce. As always, I appreciate your contribution to the conversation, Kevin!

    • @kevinlamarr1424
      @kevinlamarr1424 4 роки тому +4

      David McGill
You said not all max force trucks have the same problem, they do. It’s the technology for how the exhaust is treated. That’s the problem. So when international tried to get Cummins to make the engine, they said no way, it’s not going to work. The sticking point is they told the EPA that DPF was not needed to meet emissions standards, which was a lie. Now your reasoning does hold water in the sense that not every truck will be affected the same way just like not all smokers have the same health problems. I would not buy one for a heavy haul triple frame truck but what does that have to do with an operation like yours-absolutely nothing! I bought a single axle day cab 2000 sterling for $4,000 put another $4,000 in suspension rebuild and brakes. People were saying it was a waste of money. I made 3 to 5 thousand dollars a week with that truck and was home every day. I did amazon, mail and light intermodal. I did cars and box trucks, food trucks with a low flat bed. Here is my 2 cents on your operation going by your videos. Simple math here folks. Take the net profit from your 4 trucks. Add them up. Take the net profit from one $150,000 brand new whatever, how much is the difference? I would definitely take the multiple of 4 over one anytime. Here’s a comparison, check out. Unsafe at any speed by Ralf Nadir. He basically destroyed a brand of car based on his opinion of it. Not everyone wrecked that car but he said the car was a death trap buy it’s design flaw. This is what has happened to max force trucks while they all have the same problem, the technology, they don’t all fail because of it. So if I have a choice between a 5 year old max and a 15 year old peterbuilt I’m taking the max all day every day. 250,000 miles? If anybody has to think about that one, you might want to keep your day job.

      Kevin Lamarr 👈🏽Greetings Kevin
As the #1 (Pre-Owned) MaxxForce “Salesman” in the nation (2015-2018) while working for the largest commercial truck dealership network in North America (Rush Truck Centers), and a personal friend of Mr. McGill... I can assure you sir (with all due respect) you are flat out wrong.
Aside from Mr McGill... I have helped several fleet owners & single truck owner operators build their core business around these engines with success. The key to buying a “MaxxForce 13” engine specifically is buying it “right”. What I mean by that is several key points of specific information which can only be accessed by an “International” dealership and these being analyzed by someone who has the keen eye to do so with the care required to do it diligently as if it we’re personal finances being placed at risk.
There are simply too many flaws in the premises you’ve outlined to address them all. What I would like to ask you personally is (again - with all due respect) have you actually purchased a “MaxxForce 13” engine yourself...?
I personally benefit from the privilege of selling Peterbilt, KW, Freightliner, Western Star, Mack, International, Hino, Sterling, Mercedes, Volvo etc. at a dealership that happen to encourage me doing so. I literally deal with the good/bad/in between with every brand of truck & engine type imaginable on a daily basis.
The “MaxxForce 13” evolved out of calibration of “Caterpillar” (one of the most highly respected engine manufacturers in history) and “Navistar” (International’s parent company). It was brought to market with great expectations of being able to pass EPA emission standards without needing DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) not DPF (a Diesel Particulate Filter) as you’ve stated whether by unintentional error or outright deliberate misinformation. The many other disputable facts & figures you’ve outlined are irrelevant in regards to focus of the video.
If in fact you have purchased one of these engine from a less reputable / professional salesperson who was not able to clearly articulate the best strategy to buying these engines and/or was not able to help you select one that set you up for the best possible chance at having a positive outcome I can certainly understand & do indeed sympathize with your frustration my friend.
However the fact remains that there is definitely an intelligent approach to doing so. That approach is one which utilizes strong logic, verifiable research and quantifiable risk analysis.
Consider this question (all who have the ability to read without preconceived prejudices)... During the entire time International as a corporation dealt with their “problem” MaxxForce 13 engine did any other engine manufacturers deal with zero problems related to DEF/DPF issues? The answer is a resounding NO.
Next question... When the Cummins ISX engine was originally introduced to the market, did it go well? The answer is a definite NO again.
Ponder this... Why is it that to this day I personally have a long list of clients who are still requesting these (undeleted) engines? I’ll tell you confidently. It’s due to a very well defined set of parameters that need to be sought after when buying them. The key is information and in fact, an amount of particular information which is actually far too extensive to summarize in total here.
This response is not meant to antagonize your statement or perspective per say. I’m here solely as a solid witness to what Mr. McGill has experienced as well as many others. One might say, that investing the effort needed to enjoy the outcomes which David (or myself in fact) is describing herein is not worth their time.
Well... I’m fact for those persons it’s likely not because the uncertain value of maximized profit potential may not be their sole “business framework” to an extent requiring them to overlook other people’s negative outlooks vs accepting what “the herd” perceives as true for what is seemingly more comfortable for them.
This however, is exactly the point that is being made people...
In life & business run your own race, based your uniquely particular pace, be sure it suits your desired taste, waste not time with mere innuendo nor the sublime, yet never move in haste and when you need greater insight to these or like matters “Call Me: Gerard” or come see me face to face...
      Bars anyone....? Lol...
💪🏽Massive respect to your hustle Mr. McGill 👊🏽👏🏽👌🏽✌🏽👍🏽
