I’m going to be getting laid off from my current job in a month and getting a CDL is my number 1 priority. I plan on getting a WIA grant and doing something different with myself. I actually live close to Columbus Ohio so hopefully I can find some jobs there.
I drove a daycab as a company driver for 11 years and stayed in motels. Rather stay in a motel than in a truck any time. It was a dedicated route also. Company paid all expenses initially but toward the end they started getting stingy with the meals . Ran about 1500 miles a week working 60 to 70 hours per pay period hauling there own product. Usually grossed about 70k a year.
Ozzie Crosby hey buddy, am trying to buy a truck from Ryder as well but I don’t know how to go about it. What exactly do you need to get approved besides good credit?
Do NOT get the extended warranty!!! It is WORTHLESS!! Ryder takes good care of their trucks. I actually got the extended warranty and I tried to use it and the warranty company just ran the repair shop around with endless paperwork.
Soon i am take my CDL Class A, Then i be your path, I am in hospitality business but in 2020 coronavirus all job is gone, i cant wait buy my own use truck owner an operator . i respect what you doing . NO TRUCK NO FOOD.
That’s true 1,300 can be done easy. I’m home everyday. I make over 8,000 in 4 days I do in a day cap. My first year in trucking I made 300,000. Never be scared to say no!! Never be afraid to say no 👎 I talk to Brookers and they always gave me great rate and prices. I never had a problem with Brookers. I live in Oklahoma and it’s in the top 11 of the highest paid truck operators. I get loads that are 3,500 but they are some people here that make 1.2 million a year
What I've learned as an company OTR driver, to make money worth while. 1. Keep your record clean, and gain 2+ years driving experience 2. Don't be agreeable with your pay, and whatever truck they hand you. There's always a company out there that'll actually pay you for your worth.
I've been driving for 2.5 years, & haven't come close to finding a company that has any integrity, nor that pays worth a crap. Literally, the only way to make a good buck in this industry, is to be an OO. I just don't have the capitol for buying a tractor right now. So, I'm out of this business...
What I learned as a company driver, driving for Swft: I should have quit, 3 minutes after having been hired... Moral of the story: Don't drive for LARGE Fortune 500 companies. They don't give a fuck about you, & will rip you off every way they can. Fun Fact: Waiting on hold for 1.5 hours to get ahold of your driver leader, is horseshit!
Not here in laredo tx because there are B1 DRIVERS from Mexico and they pay them 2 dollars per movement to their employes. And when the drivers day is over he goes back to Mexico through the bridge. Where he pays 40 dollars a month in rent
The best money I made in trucking was running auto parts to Indiana from TN on a round trip at landstar... Like you really really live in a gold mine in the midwest.i can't stress that enough. Milk them dry if you can.
I'm very close to putting my plan into action. Man, if I could ever get a dedicated like yours, whoa that'd be amazing. Nice work, David. Good to know that this came out of Indy too!
Really enjoyed your video, love to see a young person grind it out and make it happen. You are proving that those who say it can't be done just need to get out of the way of those who are doing it. Well done!
You have to deduct expenses, I would say, he is making around 1 k profit after taxes a week. He is probably putting around 12 hours a day from Monday to Friday
I'm new to the industry but not new to how numbers work. I'm willing to bet he is profiting between $3,000 to $4,000 a week. It just depends on how often he runs the route, breakdowns if any, and how many ppl he cut out of his pockets (like does he have an accountant or paying a factoring company because he can't wait 30 to 45days to get paid) However, I could be wrong like I said "I'm new to the industry.
Thanks for sharing this info bro! I pull doubles with a day cab as a company driver but I'm working towards doing my own thing so I'm always watching for their trucks to go up for sale. This is even more motivation ✊🏾😎
Look for auctions of going out of business type, where they maintained the fleet... get a cheap air ticket to florida or wherever, you will save $5k at least. I got a 2012 Mack Pinnacle with 400k that had been on dedicated turnpike run (smooth, not hard on truck) to Philly, $9,500 with only 400k on MP7 motor and truck is super clean. There are deals out there. Avoid other auction trucks (they usually have a motor that is about to blow (trust me, and re-read that), avoid trucks you can't get an oil sample checked, or those without maintenance records. Learn about manufacturer maintenance, was it done by a third party? Keep learning.
I tried telling people that for years but they rather run on that hamster wheel. Just take a day every now and then to visit companies and ask for freight . Then make it work.
All in all its just a rat race . With the brokers cutting rats agent orange aka DONALD DUCK Trump taking away damn near all the writes offs and all theses new rules and fees . I know better. I been doing this too long . If u dont have a government contract lock down or something concrete. Let u said u just spending your wheels going nowhere fast . Straight like that
Agent orange gave all the 1% big tax cuts under his b.s. tax plan .how u think its gonna get paid for. By taking away from the working poor and so called middle class. Really its no more middle class. Its haves and haves not!!
Nice video. Great advice and, as the economy continues to decline, the opportunities to take contract dedicated direct loads from shippers will increase. Small and large fleets alike are shuffling their driver rosters to eliminate the marginal producers and those with sketchy CSA scores. Do your homework about the area you want to run in and spend some time calling on whatever shippers you want to haul for. If you present yourself properly and sell your service you will find good freight. If you are new to the business find a solid, reliable broker and do a good contract with them. They need your service to sell. The trucking industry is an ever-changing challenge and opportunity to 'do-your-own-thing'. THAT is where the real money is! Don't give up because there is an enormous amount of opportunity in America even during a recession.
I prefer daycabs, don't like sleeping in truck, but most daycab runs are usually local or LTL runs. I leave the terminal dock and do a halfway meet with with another terminal driver and swap trailers and head back home. Also, the dockworker with CDL is okay, you go out to another terminal and clockin to the dock, grab a forklift and load your freight.
Kudos to you young man. I'm in heavy haul,I have a 4 axle truck with a sleeper. The rates right now, are horrendous.I'm seriously considering coming off the road to do something local, but my truck is too heavy smh.
I’m currently obtaining my CDL in Texas. I have 3 weeks left in the course and this opened my mind. All I heard were guys saying freight rates are down, which I’ve found to be somewhat true, but this has given me more hope. Thanks for the advice!
I ran Austin Indiana to Subaru in Lafayette for years. Stopped in either Whiteland or Whitestown for my 30 everyday. I know that lane, and both of those Love's, very well indeed. I was home everyday, but Venture Logistics just happened to run sleepers out of the Austin yard, instead of day cabs. Now I'm with a new company, running day cabs, getting paid MUCH better and still home every night. I love this life of mine.
David, I'm 57 yrs old and seriously thinking of buying my own truck and changing my career due to the fact I work overseas. I'm from NC and would like to do what you are doing. I also want piggy back on what Mr. Mama Hammer said in his comment. You look and sound like a very nice and humble gentleman. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'm glad I ran across your video cause I was debating if I should get a day cab truck or an O/T. Now that I seen your video I may lean more towards a day cab and if I decide to expand my route I could always put a sleeper. You take care and be safe out there. Wish you the best brother young man!
Excellent work! Even without a backhaul, that's over $4k per week at just over 2k miles. Daycab = less weight and fuel. Keep the overhead low, reap the profits! 👍
Yeah....I guess it depends on the make, model, and age, driveline etc..... New daycabs are pushing over 8 mpg. In an older one, you'd be lucky to get 6 mpg fully loaded.
@@bigbird8960 , 3 average what? $3k per week, or 3k miles? Anyway, I was over-enthusiastic about being an O/O at first....could not care less now. Looks like brokers have most drivers by the balls....even in this current crisis....looks like a "haul cheap freight" market that is hurting the guy with an actual truck worth putting on the road.
Watching the video just gave me the inspiration i need to make the jump into dry van/reefer. Im currently running bulk cement Avg 2-2.50/mile, my biggest issue is i dont want to live out in the truck. Your killing it and you home everyday. Keep it up man. Thanks for the video!!
I’m definitely a subscriber!! You explain things very clear and motiving...even though I’m old enough to be your father...I can learn a whole lot from you. thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
First off, you can haul more weight. Take short hauls, you can still drive 10hours out, but if you know of a good place to spend the night, motel room, family members house/ girlfriends house. Take your break on the other side. Most likely you’ll probably use less fuel.
I've been saying this my whole life since I found out about trucking and its income. EVEN IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE A TRUCKER, get a cdl as backup in case your life goes down the shitter. Trucking will put you back where you need to be with hard work. I've known truckers making like 150k a year and they dont have to work consecutive weeks. Saturday Sunday off. Of course this is all as a owner but working for companies doesnt kill this idea either.
Hi Mr, McGill, first off, congratulations on your success. I wanted to ask you which load board or broker service have you found to be the most beneficial?
What about it? These god damn trucks don't break down every fucking day bro. Shit is so annoying hearing you all say that. Fuel? If his truck is like mine it has 2 100 gallon tanks and get 7 miles by the gallon. 200 times 7 is 1400 but let's round down to 1100 cause the tank is never "full". His trip total is about 550. So only has to fuel up every other day.
@Shane Gunter I agree with you 100% Some people are so afraid to step out of their comfort zone and love to challenge someone that's actually making things happen for himself like @mcgillcfo with these overused questions I call excuses. You're either the employee or the employer.
How should I get paid as an investor if I go 50/50 with someone so they can buy their truck? I won't drive or anything I just want a solid return on my money
Never invest in a truck that you not driving yourself, nor if you don’t have a trucking background..... it’s too much headache. Trust me it’s little to no return on your investment.
Amen be able to make money from any business is really a gift from God.Many people tend to think that it's only because you work hard that you make money with any Job.Money and blessing come from heaven.Someone will try the same business and will make nothing because it's not his call.
Right on! Appreciate your diligence and positive attitude. Way to think out of the box! Even in your scenario, I prefer a small sleeper so I can lie down just in case I get delayed due to unforeseen events...you know how trucking goes. Nonetheless, you're on point. Much success to you brother. Keep up the good work!
Fuel is about 1,100 to 1,200 a week. This dude is making great money with an average of 3.00 a mile. Most starting out would kill for 2.20 Mile and that's OTR

Company paid all expenses initially but toward the end they started getting stingy with the meals . Ran about 1500 miles a week working 60 to 70 hours per pay period hauling there own product. Usually grossed about 70k a year.
What company was that?
Awesome!! I bought my truck from Ryder. 476 per month. Did it for 5 years. Had a 48" bunk. Loved it.
Ozzie Crosby hey buddy, am trying to buy a truck from Ryder as well but I don’t know how to go about it. What exactly do you need to get approved besides good credit?
@@guynuel1.... Pretty sure that is all you need. Not sure if the bank would want you leased on to a company already. I did it in 2002.
Do NOT get the extended warranty!!! It is WORTHLESS!! Ryder takes good care of their trucks. I actually got the extended warranty and I tried to use it and the warranty company just ran the repair shop around with endless paperwork.
Ozzie Crosby thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it🙏
Being head quarter in a major city helps along a profitable freight lane i.e. Interstate 95.

Soon i am take my CDL Class A, Then i be your path, I am in hospitality business but in 2020 coronavirus all job is gone, i cant wait buy my own use truck owner an operator . i respect what you doing . NO TRUCK NO FOOD.
Great content DMAC
Well executed
Plain & simple straight to the point
That’s true 1,300 can be done easy. I’m home everyday. I make over 8,000 in 4 days I do in a day cap. My first year in trucking I made 300,000. Never be scared to say no!! Never be afraid to say no 👎 I talk to Brookers and they always gave me great rate and prices. I never had a problem with Brookers. I live in Oklahoma and it’s in the top 11 of the highest paid truck operators. I get loads that are 3,500 but they are some people here that make 1.2 million a year
I appreciate this new perspective!
Good for you young man. It makes me proud to see a guy make up his mind n just go for it. Wish you success...God bless you
What I've learned as an company OTR driver, to make money worth while.
1. Keep your record clean, and gain 2+ years driving experience
Amen to that always try & get the most for your time and Effort!!
@@fobbitoperator3620 I heard Walmart is hiring with 2 years of experience.
@@thisismagacountry1318 Gonna give Werner a try. Their trucks go 68 mph. Better than 65, a little...

Young brother you are doing the damn thank. Mad respect
We dont need no tricky rickys telling this young man how to hustle !!!!
Do you think if i start one in the border of mexico and usa will be a gold mine? I live in texas border with mexico
I am an old timer and I admire you and what you are doing. Great to see someone a generation after keeping he American foundation
I'm very close to putting my plan into action. Man, if I could ever get a dedicated like yours, whoa that'd be amazing. Nice work, David. Good to know that this came out of Indy too!
Wow. Simple, straight to the point. You couldn't have said it better! Very inspirational! If only others would take the time to understand.
You are winning bro I just subscribed
Really enjoyed your video, love to see a young person grind it out and make it happen. You are proving that those who say it can't be done just need to get out of the way of those who are doing it. Well done!
You have to deduct expenses, I would say, he is making around 1 k profit after taxes a week. He is probably putting around 12 hours a day from Monday to Friday
Part 2: How I Make $1,300 Per Day in a Daycab | Expenses Explained ua-cam.com/video/QfaoAuFTo9c/v-deo.html
I make just about the same in nyc
With a day cab. Blessings to you brother for teaching those who don’t believe.
Love that attitude. Great knowledge. Thx for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this info bro! I pull doubles with a day cab as a company driver but I'm working towards doing my own thing so I'm always watching for their trucks to go up for sale. This is even more motivation ✊🏾😎
I love the way u explained everything...Great Job
Man I just love what you're doing young brother and the love you're showing sharing your knowledge and experience... Much respect...
Blessings 2 u & all those special 2 u.. thanku 4 sharing ur immensely valuable knowledge.. 4 all us common folks. once again thanku.🙏
Straight like that
Good advice
@Dixie Frank . Office space telephone live line printer meals boots clothes etc.....
Agent orange gave all the 1% big tax cuts under his b.s. tax plan .how u think its gonna get paid for. By taking away from the working poor and so called middle class. Really its no more middle class. Its haves and haves not!!
Yeah. Its a damn mess . Agent orange got to go in 2020
I like you man. You have a genuine approach to this trucking industry and as soon as I get my CDL I'd like to work with you.
Damn a 4 axle i don't think i ever saw that before
@@tylercouture216 Sure you have. Just a regular 3 axle with an additional drop axle.
It's Called HUSTLE , LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS.
You've made a good deal for yourself, good info, thanks.
I’m currently obtaining my CDL in Texas. I have 3 weeks left in the course and this opened my mind. All I heard were guys saying freight rates are down, which I’ve found to be somewhat true, but this has given me more hope. Thanks for the advice!
I’m most definitely taking notes!
Can't never could. Do your thing
All this and you are home every day, congrats on your system. I should’ve watched this a long time ago. Keep it up, I’ll keep in touch.
Very informative, your giving me inspiration
Great info. I have been driving for over 27 years I am still learning things.
As a broker I can tell you that with the market the way it is, you have been blessed. Keep it up!
Yes, but things can always change. It’s been a good run but change is the only constant in life
David,
I'm 57 yrs old and seriously thinking of buying my own truck and changing my career due to the fact I work overseas.
A Daycab does not mean less weight or fuel. I ran a daycab for years loaded out at 79500 every load.
Yeah....I guess it depends on the make, model, and age, driveline etc.....
New daycabs are pushing over 8 mpg. In an older one, you'd be lucky to get 6 mpg fully loaded.
@@PTucker0864 They're lighter, means they can haul more, still equals out to around 80,000. we get about 3 average in our day cab.
Hard buisness when your learning the ins and outs
Keep up the good work my brother don't get sidetracked and do what it is that you need to do on the positive side God bless you
Doing a load out . That’s how you do it brotha using someone else equipment to make money 💪🏿 .
LoL till you get a claim for damaged trailer then ouch
I’m definitely a subscriber!! You explain things very clear and motiving...even though I’m old enough to be your father...I can learn a whole lot from you. thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
You're really lucky, I've had my authority for 10 months now, still can't find a dedicated route
Every time you haul a load save that number, PU & del on time, call them every week, you do good work they'll start calling you.
@@brooksteer5629 well this was during the load price record last year. Even so 80k or anything around that range is good
@@brooksteer5629 nobody quotes their income as net income Skip, company or owner operator.
Props to you,for not giving up.and staying focus on your goal.
This is the just of what I’m planning on doing. I have no interest in getting a sleeper.

Hi Mr, McGill, first off, congratulations on your success. I wanted to ask you which load board or broker service have you found to be the most beneficial?
Really good, happy to hear you are doing well and thanks for encouraging the rest of us in telling us that it is possible.

Good Job David, Hard work and effort is the key and it seems that you have that. Thank you for sharing.
That 2nd load going back home isn’t guaranteed... You dam sure couldn’t do that in New York. The tolls and parking tickets alone will cut you in half.

Please click the link in my videos’ description.
Was just up in Columbus stuck @ the pilot on Wilson.. Was dead spot for me expediting for a couple days... Great drop btw burh!
Funny, I live around the corner from that pilot.
What about fuel expenses, toll, Maintenance or breakdown expenses.
@@von5545 lmao ... ikr? It gets tiring with these dudes that want to be spoonfed

@Shane Gunter I agree with you 100% Some people are so afraid to step out of their comfort zone and love to challenge someone that's actually making things happen for himself like @mcgillcfo with these overused questions I call excuses. You're either the employee or the employer.
Nice job McGill, You should be proud!
Sounds to good to be true . Pay to high for miles
Your probably right
Sounds very possible when it's short run
Great job, iam out of Cincinnati and never even considered a day cab but you proved it can be done!
How should I get paid as an investor if I go 50/50 with someone so they can buy their truck? I won't drive or anything I just want a solid return on my money
Oh how do you do that...
Oh boy!

How much that fuel bill at the end of the week
My fuel is ballpark 50 cent per mile.
I'm not sure I'm following your logic. Spending $200-300 on fuel for a day's worth of fuel on $1,300. Those are good numbers for me.
Chad Harris 1300 per day
Fuel is about 1,100 to 1,200 a week. This dude is making great money with an average of 3.00 a mile. Most starting out would kill for 2.20 Mile and that's OTR
