  • The RadioAnalog PTRX-7300 is an add-in for the Icom IC-7300 that creates an RF tap for RF receive that can be used to drive a software-defined radio (SDR) receiver, in this case the SDRPlay RSP1A. In the video I install the device and demonstrate it. See www.radioanalog.com.

    And good luck dropping all those screws!
    A carpenter walks into the hardware store and asks for a dozen 16 penny nails. The clerk asked him what he is going to build. He tells him he is going to build a house. The clerk says you can't build a house with only 12 nails. The carpenter says it will be enough after I pick up all the ones I drop!
    I usually test my work BEFORE I screw the lid down!
    So actually after I purchase the SDR Radio and the adapter it has cost me half of what I paid for the radio!
    That big screen looks so pretty! Good job Dave!

    Thank you Dave. You can download Omnirig and have them work together. You can then tune either the 7300 or the computer. I get my PTRX-7300 next week from DX Engineering. This device is awesome!

    VERY interesting video! Thanks as always, Dave!
    I was using that MFJ SDR switch and OmniRig to team up an IC-718 along with an RSP2pro. Another difference using this method is that you aren't restricted to using your expensive and super-capable SDR as a mere sidecar to another radio, leaving many of that receiver's features unusable and unused in the process.
    The RF issues of leakage and match with the SDR switch were something that I had to work hard to mitigate leaving me desiring something simpler and integrated, so I got the IC-7300 to replace the 718/RSP2pro combination that I was using.
    I do miss seeing more band displayed using SDRuno with the RSP2pro because it's harder to catch broadcast stations when they are active now using the IC-7300, but it is very easy to spin the dial over too.
    I wonder if giving the IC-7300 a couple more edge options might be possible in an update to the firmware?
    I sincerely wish there was a better way to run both together or separately without the RF issues.

    Dave, here's a $30 alternative (on eBay w/ free shipping - HRO has it for I think $40) that will pull a RF tap from inside the ic-7300 to interface to your SDR and create a panadaptor on the computer. The SDR is protected from excess power (which will damage your RSP1A if it's directly in parallel with your antenna) when you transmit using this internal RF tap. It comes out the same square hole in the back that currently is occupied by the external tuner connector. You lose the external antenna tuner connection but it's still available inside the radio (you put/push the tuner connector back into the radio) and if you really need it you could cut a hole - I suppose, and bring it out. I'm pointing this out because you get the RF tap functionality for $200 less (again, no soldering for this solution, etc.). This solution probably has some signal loss over the $230 solution but it works. I have the RSP1A and this solution absolutely works great with my IC-7300! I'm just pointing this out as an option for those looking to save a little money on their ic-7300 solution. I learned about this via a youtube video that's on the SDRPLAY website. An SDRPLAY employee discusses this adaptor functionality and installation.
    Just FYI! On eBay search for RX Adapter for ICOM IC-7300 ( RX7300 - SMA )
    At HRO search for RX7300. HAM RADIO OUTLET RX7300 - SMA Keep up the good work! 73 from your "neighbor" in Fort Collins

      Very confused by this. Can't find any installation instructions for this on their site. Does it work with SDRdx (or similar) to function then as a panadaptor? Obviously saving $200 got my attention! Any higher risk to the IC7300 using this versus the PTRX-7300? Hope you are online and replying as would love to know if it's still working well for you. Thanks

    If you hook the Ptrx-7300 BEFORE the ic7300’s internal filters then you can use the filters in the sdrPlay and see ANY band... not just the band the 7300 is set on.... (instructions on the radio analog website)

      Which tap point is actually better? I have it installed in the port described in the original instructions now. I am using a RSP1A SDR. Is the filtering good enough in that unit to bypass the 7300's filters? Any advice?

    • @jeffnorthcutt
      @jeffnorthcutt 4 роки тому

      David Kaye - just depends on what you want to do... the SDR Play filters are quite good. I switched from the original setup and haven’t looked back. I really like being able to monitor a different band than what is currently tuned on the the ic7300. If you want to use it as a big panadapter. It may be better to have it tied to the same tuning as the 7300.

    Hi Dave, your FTDX-3000 has both IF and RF out jacks. My Yaesu radio has the same configuration, and I have found the IF out to be more useful for use with an external SDR and panadapter software (Win4Yaesu). The nice thing with the IF is you see exactly what the radio is seeing internally. FYI: The author of the Win4Yaesu software has an Icom version called Win4Icom that supports either an SDRPlay RSP spectrum or the internal Icom spectrum of the modern Icom radios. The great thing about the Win4Icom and Win4Yaesu (and Win4K3Suite for Electraft) is in addition to a great spectrum display you get full radio control.

    Thanks Dave for listening to your viewers. I bought mine two minutes after I plugged in my IC-7300 for the first time. Unfortunately I had to get the PTRX-7300 from the UK at Martin Lynch and Sons. It cost a bit more than what DX Engineering has it for as I had to pay conversion and freight from the UK. I use Omnirig to sync the controls. Not too often I run the radio without the SDRuno as it make tuning the radio a breeze. Sure it takes longer to get everything running but it is worth it. With the extra $250 where can you buy a radio like the IC-7300 with this feature? Again thanks for listening and acting upon it.

    Hi Dave, a tip for you. I found that I can stick a small molydnd#^*&^$%^ magnet (1/4" ^3) on the shaft of the screwdriver to facilitate lifting a screw out of the hole. Then stick the screw to the magnet. After all the screws are collected just slide the magnet and screws off the shaft and set aside for safekeeping. When it's time to reverse the process just do so and you can put each screw onto the tip to lower into the hole...B

    I'm curious about whether shrink-wrapping the tuner lead, and sticking it down inside the case, in the void adjacent to the speaker is practical. If done correctly, it would seem a benign way to keep them together.

    Having
    some really odd behavior that maybe someone could shed some light on. I
    have an IC-7300 that I am using SDRuno and an RSP1A as a panadapter for
    it. I am doing this with one of those PTRX boards installed in my 7300.
    It was all working very well. Had to tear all my stuff down to set it
    up in a new desk I got for the shack and when I put back together this
    happens. When I started SDRuno, it asked me if I wasted to install the
    new version and I did. when it starts up now, my radio automatically
    goes into transmit. Looked at the settings in Omni-Rig and nothing has
    changed. If I disconnect the PTRX and run SDRuno on its own it works
    fine. Anyone have any idea what could be going on here? Thanks and 73's

    Excellent! Just what I need. I have an SDRPlay RSPdx but my transceiver is an old but reliable Kenwood TS-830S hybrid. I know it's a boat anchor but it's in good condition and the only radio I have at the moment. My question is: Can either the MFJ-1708B or the RadioAnalog PTRX-7300 Pan Adapter Module work in my TS-830S? I expect the latter would require some minor mechanical and electronic refitting -- don't know about the former. Thanks!

    I have a bad habit of scanning things that are to small. I then save it to a folder on my computer. Then I print out on full sized paper! My eyes are old also! But this gives me larger print and if I lose the paperwork I can go back to my computer and print out a new one. Must have a good system to save them so it can be found later if needed.

    This might be a stupid question but, I don't understand what this accomplishes... As far as I understand, it is a RF tap from the radio, low enough to feed into the antenna input of a SDR. I may be terribly mistaken here, but what is the difference between this and hooking your station antenna directly into the SDR?

  • @richardallankellogg
    @richardallankellogg 3 роки тому

    I don’t believe your comment about loosing 3dB signal (when using the MFJ-1708 in receive) is relevant, as for most HF listening, the noise from the antenna is usually at least 10 dB higher than the internal noise from the receiver. So cutting down the signal by 3 dB wont effect SNR, as the noise from the antenna will still be setting the SNR.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 роки тому

      True on receiving, but losing 3 dB on transmit means that of your 100 watts, only 50 get out.

      The AMP feeds back what’s called an ALC voltage (automatic level control) to reduce the power put out by the 7300 to match what the amp needs. Some amps (like mine) don’t have this, so I set the 7300 to 62 watts when running the Ameritron ALS-500M.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  4 роки тому

      A VHF dis-cone wont give you a good performance at HF. Look at one of the receive-only loops on the market. IF the loop points its null at the transmit antenna, you should be okay.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  3 роки тому

      In theory, yes, it adds an isolation amp which adds a hair tad of noise. However, we’re talking HF, where the noise temperature of the radio is well below ordinary band noise, so it’s not going to make any practical impact.

He has a connection from the board he installed to the RSP1A and then it has a USB port on the RSP1A that you run to your computer. He had the SDRPLAY software (free) "SDRUNO" running on his computer. There are a bunch of youtube videos that show how to make the connections. Nice. I have a problem with many of the newer radios... Models starting back about 2010 perhaps earlier. With all this microchip technology and gps systems combined with this 5G technology and its capabilities I just wonder if these radios could contain chips laying dormant until 5G is in full swing AND a need by the government to be better able to identify any given individual at any given time.
    Someone operating a Ham radio station and speaking against government tyranny could easily find themself not only found but recorded even without transmitting. Individual record keeping by a government could certainly allow much greater government control. Anyone may not be able to discover the chip in a ham radio while the chip is in a dormant state.
