  • The Radio Analog PTRX-7300 device creates a tap point in the popular Icom IC-7300 which you can use to feed a separate SDR receiver to get a better panadapter screen. I used channel funds at the suggestion of several Oggies to purchase it. In this video I describe it, and when it comes I will install it and report on it.

Dave, here's a $30 alternative (on eBay w/ free shipping - HRO has it for I think $40) that will pull a RF tap from inside the ic-7300 to interface to your SDR and create a panadaptor on the computer. The SDR is protected from excess power (which will damage your RSP1A if it's directly in parallel with your antenna) when you transmit using this internal RF tap. It comes out the same square hole in the back that currently is occupied by the external tuner connector. You lose the external antenna tuner connection but it's still available inside the radio (you put/push the tuner connector back into the radio) and if you really need it you could cut a hole - I suppose, and bring it out. I'm pointing this out because you get the RF tap functionality for $200 less (again, no soldering for this solution, etc.). This solution probably has some signal loss over the $230 solution but it works. I have the RSP1A and this solution absolutely works great with my IC-7300! I'm just pointing this out as an option for those looking to save a little money on their ic-7300 solution. I learned about this via a youtube video that's on the SDRPLAY website. An SDRPLAY employee discusses this adaptor functionality and installation.
Just FYI! On eBay search for RX Adapter for ICOM IC-7300 ( RX7300 - SMA )
At HRO search for RX7300. HAM RADIO OUTLET RX7300 - SMA Keep up the good work! 73 from your "neighbor" in Fort Collins

I ordered from HRO Denver 2 weeks ago. Same expected ship date. Will mate with my SDRdx when it arrives. All in all, less expensive then a Flex radio. Enjoy the great videos you provide the ham community. Been watching for a number of years. And thank you for the Xtra Class study lessons which got me my upgrade.

I installed this with the SDR Play and yes the two combined was pricey but well worth it. I absolutely love it. Runs on my monitor with the audio playing through the monitor speakers. I control my rig with the mouse. I would never go back to looking and tuning from my rig. Note: I can still use the radio speakers and tuning knob simultaneously if I choose. Take care.John from Lompoc

    Thanks Dave,
I purchased the PTRX-7300 and intend to use the IC-7300 internal filters and connect it to my RSP duo so I could have diversity reception. The second RSPduo receiver will be also used for full bandwidth on a second antenna. I like the idea that the IC-7300 will add more input filtering on the RSPduo receiver connected to the IC-7300. Thank you again Dave for your very informative videos. Bob N3SWL

There are two very different ways to install this. One way uses the internal filters, one does not. I hope you cover both scenarios and the differences experienced by the user. Maybe touch on how this can help you monitor two frequencies or two bands at the same time.

Hi David. Was trying to do this (ptrx-7300) to my new IC-7300. Unfortunately, I can't even loosen the top cover screws! It feels like I am going to strip them. Using a #1 phillips. Do you have any suggestions/ideas or should I be using a different screwdriver? Thanks in advance.

      @davecasler  4 роки тому

Use a JIS ( Japan Industrial Standard) screwdriver. The screws are in tight! Make sure whatever screwdriver you use fits all the way into the screw head. Push down firmly on the screwdriver for that first turn. If it doesn't want to come out, use a portable "impact" type powered screwdriver. Whatever you do, stop short of stripping the screw head.

@@davecasler Yep, finally figured that out - sure wish they would put that in the manual. I asked several folks on discord and most said just use a phillips. Hope you areing well, be safe! 73...

Good decision David. You won't be sorry. I use Omnirig to sync the tuning. I did not catch the filtering choices the first time around so I am looking forward to how that can be toggled. Thanks! Kevin KA0KAE

That looks interesting. Still weighing options on an Hf rig, but 7300 is looking better.

Dave, can you go into more detail when you lose the 3db signal degradation?

Dave I ordered mine on 4/14/20 from DX still waiting patiently also did you order the DX-Patrol MK4 SDR Receivers DX-PATROLMK4 ?

Dave got mine 3 days ago from DX after FedEx lost it for 4 days but I do now have it waiting for you to install yours hoping you do a video on it. You also mentioned two options involving filters can you explain why you are going with the Alterative installation and the differences?

What would it take for the 7300 to work on the HF marine frequencies and the MARS frequencies? Thanks in advance.

Read John Kershaw's comment. I have one and love it. You can watch the spectrum scope and waterfall on as large of a monitor as you want and see the whole band's signals. You do need a SDR radio like one of the SDR Play units connected to a computer to make it work.

Start at 6:00 and read the chart. Look at all this device does compared to having a signal splitter and SDR. It does so much more with less negative results (such as a 3dB signal loss!)
