    In a movie like this just one minute of a deleted scene is a crime because that doesn't let us enjoy all the time with these fascinating characters. And one minute is essential to understand them better. A real good movie is never too long...but Hollywood producers will never understand that...

      I would too, it doesn't matter if it'd make the movie too long because it would still be very interesting to see the whole thing deleted scenes and all all tied together. I like Del, John Candy made him into a great character, but the extended airplane scenes sort of lead to me understanding a bit more Neil finally losing it with him later in the motel and commenting on his long pointless ramblings.

    Out of everything, they should have included the part when Neal apologizes to Del because he felt that he really hurt him with that speech, and in return Del apologizes because he messed up the night for Neal. This would have been perfect for the story and shows why the next morning they are able to have breakfast together.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 6 місяців тому +3

      It would've been better if their apologies were left in there. And in fact, it looked like, after Del's response to Neil's rant "I'm the real article", Neil's facial expression indicated that he was now feeling a little remorse about the way he spoke to him (the music that started then also gave off that feeling). Neil didn't quite expect Dels response to his raving to be tugging at the heartstrings a little bit. He probably just expected Del to snap back at him like he was doing, or to just passive-aggressively not say much back. But the way Del actually responded made Neil feel sort of sorry for how he spoke to him.
      Also, because of the apology scene, their reaction was less angry about waking up cuddled together than it would've been if they fought the night before without apologizing. It was still no doubt uncomfortable for them either way, but they had less anger about it than they could've because they right away knew that they were half asleep and thought they were cuddling their wives, and that neither of them were gay. If either of them assumed they were, they definitely would've had an uglier more unsettled reaction, I mean, this was the 80s.
      Either way though, it was funny that they both chose to then immediately not verbally acknowledge what they accidentally did and instead talk about the latest Chicago Bears 🐻 game, "Bears all the way"

    • @Suddenlyits1960
      @Suddenlyits1960 5 місяців тому +1

      I agree completely! To be quite honest,all of this footage was fantastic and deserved to have been included. The deleted scenes of "Doobie" threatening Neil,and Del trying to reign him in and scold him like a mom was a riot and show how truly unstable the cab driver was. "Are you looking at my hair?"
      I've always wished that Steve Martin and John Candy would have done more films together. John Candy left us far too soon.

      Obvious they edited a ton it explains some things you really didn't give much thought. I think Hughes knew you would figure it out. For instance the pizza kid robbing I figured he knew the front office guy. Probably did. But you didn't know they had an earlier contact. But all of a sudden this kid enters and steals their cash. it just makes more sense statistically when somebody breaks in they been there before. Or how'd the beer end up on the bed. What beer? But you didn't care.

    It now makes sense that the motel thief was the pizza delivery guy. They should have left that part in. • @ofb-jq5lc
    @ofb-jq5lc 6 місяців тому +17

    Paul Hirsch edited this movie. It is said that an editor makes a bad director look good, and a good director look great, and a great director look like a genius. Hirsch is a genius and makes John Hughes look like the master he was. This footage is edited deleted scenes. You have to imagine Hirsch looking at pure, raw footage from each camera set-up and assembling the shots and scenes so as to invoke interest, emotion, empathy, sympathy and solidarity with the characters and their situations. The motel scenes alone are a master class in editing. Like Bob Seger sang, "what to leave in, what to leave out." Paul Hirsch wrote his autobiography in 2019 call 'A Long Time Ago, In A Cutting Room, Far, Far, Away . . . ' about his experiences working with and editing films for great directors such as Brian DePalma, George Lucas, Irvin Kirshner and John Hughes. Well worth picking up.

    There’s more deleted scenes that’ve yet to be discovered, such as;
    - Extended phone conversation scenes between Neil and his wife
    - A sub-plot where Neil’s wife thinks he’s cheating on him with Del (whom she thinks is a woman)
    - A scene before the State Trooper pulls over Del & Neil were Del asks Neil if he’s ever been to Hawaii
    - A scene in which the State Trooper tells Neil & Del they’ve driven past Chicago and are in Wisconsin, which leads to an altercation between Del & Neil
    - A scene in which Del & Neil stop at a local strip club to use the phone after their car catches fire
    - A scene that takes place after the State Trooper impounded the burnt car in which Del tells Neil he didn’t get rental insurance (since he used Neil’s credit card) and Neil punches Del in the face (which explains his black eye at the end of the film)
    - And a scene after Del tells Neil his wife’s dead, where Del tells Neil how him & his wife couldn’t have a kid and after she died he just left the house they lived in and never returned

So all that time, he could've gone back there to live in that house if he wanted to instead of wandering from place to place without a home? Also, if Neil was homeless and couldn't afford a roof over his head, how could he afford airline travel? Wouldn't it be wiser to spend whatever money you have to get off the street and into an accommodation first, and then flying on airlines second?

    I reallt miss John Candy. I enjoyed everything he did,back to his SCTV days. He was always a likeable guy and I was very sad when he left us at such a young age. When tbey paired him with Steve Martin (another great) it made for a fantastic film. I watched this one many times and even bought the VHS when it was new. Its truly a shame that the studio forced Hughes to cut the film back because THEY thought its run time was too long. I would have gladly watched it if it ran 4 hours in length. With the advent of DVDS and BluRay someone shoukd put it all back together and issue a "directors cut" of "Planes,Trains & Automobiles".
    The writing,pace and acting of this film was superb. All this deleted footage deserves to be restored and preserved. The ending when Neil finds out the Del's wife had passed and brings his unlikely friend home,is very touching.

      It is too long for a comedy though, and another reason why they cut so much out is because the shit John. Candys character was doing was something that would make the audience hate him, remember they're trying to set the ending up to feel sympathy for him, not say well he deserves to be alone. It wasn't the studio either it was the test audience, they didn't like candy's character because of all the bad nasty, and grotesque shit he was doing.

    Crazy thing is there's a whole bunch of other stuff that's not included here. They filmed a ton of stuff between the beginning of the movie and when they get to the airport in the beginning. Also, the entire sequence with Michael McKean and them going to jail, fighting over Del not getting insurance for the rental car, Neil punching him, etc. I think there was some other stuff involving the whole subplot with Neil's wife thinking he was cheating on her. Then of course the final sequence where Del tells his story to Neil at a diner.

      This movie would've been too long and dragged at times if they left all of these deleted scenes in, such as Del's constant talking on the plane, it almost makes Neil's yelling at him about it in the motel room more understandable.
      Some of these deleted scenes made Del look like more of a jerkass such as how he talked to the pizza guy, where in the theatrical cut Del overall seems like a really nice guy with a good heart. He's a bigger prick and more annoying in these deleted scenes than in almost all of the theatrical scenes.

      Yeah, it did. And it made it make more sense on why he snuck back into their room later to rob them.
      And the cab scene made that cab driver look like a much darker and crazier character than he appeared in the theatrical cut. The only thing he said in the theatrical cut was "You said your friend ain't from around here so I thought I'd show him around", the whole rest of it was cut

      I liked John Candy as Del, but his very long chattering in these additional scenes on the plane did make me more understand Neil for lashing out at him later in the motel scene. Also, the theatrical cut made Del in general seem like a nice understanding guy. But when adding the entire scene with the pizza guy and seeing Del being a real asshole with him, that sorta changed the overall type of guy he was. And like I said, the extended airplane part made him more annoying

      Yeah, but they also make Neil look less like an intolerant prick and more like he's having understandable reactions most anybody would have. Later in the movie when Neil gets home to his wife and kids, you could see that he's really a good guy who loves his family and isn't a prick, and now with the extended scenes making his reactions to Del even more understandable, you can believe that even more.
      But you're right, the extended scenes made Del more hard to take and harder to sympathize with, plus they would've made the movie drag on too much, so I see why they cut them out. Also, it would've made Del's reveal late in the movie less of a gut punch because we wouldn't have felt for him as much. But the cuts did make Neil look like a more intolerant guy. Maybe they should've left a few more things in the movie, just not as many as we saw in this video

    • @Monoville
      @Monoville 8 місяців тому +6

      There's another scene which was cut which makes Del look even worse. The scene at the end where Neal goes back to the train station, that's actually him arriving at him home train station and Del had followed him there. They used clever editing and flipping/reversing footage to make it look like he went back to the station where he left Del (notice in the shot where Neal gets off the train, his hair is parted the other way and the number on the train is back to front). Del then gives a big speech about how it's not fair that he doesn't have a life as good as Neal's. Test audiences thought Del came across really badly so John Hughes made some drastic last minute changes.

      @@DustyJones1997BGCL Hughes and the editor Paul Hirsch had turned in a cut that was under two hours, but it tested poorly at the test screenings primarily because they found Del so unlikable. After further trimming and fixing the ending so that Neal returned to Del (originally Neal found Del waiting for him at his local train stop, effectively making him a stalker), they ended up at the current runtime with much better results at the next test screening.

Most of this would have changed the quality of the film, making it too crude or bizarre, like Doogie the cab driver threatening to kill Neal. interesting to see the cut scenes, and makes you appreciate the excellent editing job that made the movie such a classic. It certainty proves how important great editing is everything to a films success.

    Proof of the value of editing. Less is more. We can infer much about Neal and especially Del without being hit over the head. Del should be uncouth but likeable, and his interaction with the pizza kid would have challenged that notion too much, IMHO. The dick and fart language is a bit unnecessarily broad, as well. The theatrical version remains charming and a favorite. Can't count how many times I've watched it.

    • @CaptainFoufeu
      @CaptainFoufeu 6 місяців тому +3

      What a coincidence! My friend Charles and I were talking about making a sequel too, about 2 years ago. Because Del was so poor, Neal shares his New York home with Del, trying to get him on his feet. Del's company goes bankrupt and he loses his job. Neal helps Del learn marketing, and he gets a job at Neal's company. Del is such a good people person, that the whole office loves him. Over a period of 5 years, Del spends the holidays with the Pages. The kids call him Uncle Del. Eventually, the boss puts Del in a higher position than Neal, which angers him, and Neal breaks off his friendship with Del. Broken hearted, Del leaves New York and goes to Chicago to start over at a new company, because he refuses to disgrace Neal any further. While in Chicago, he sees Neal's wife, and he explains what happened. They come up with a plan to rekindle the friendship, because it was never Del's intent to supercede Neal. She explains to Del that because of what happened, Neal had gotten worse at work, and they had fallen on hard financial times, and they were about to lose their beautiful home. Del helps with some bills, and tells her to encourage Neal to return home and be with the family instead of being so far away, which will also lessen bills. Neal comes home just before Thanksgiving, sees Del in the house, and is furious. Del explains that he understands that it's his fault why everything went bad, but he wants to repair the damage done. He's working as a vice president for a much more successful marketing firm than from where Neal worked in New York, and Del offers him a job there as an assistant vice president on equal terms with him. Del tells Neal, "Six years ago, you gave me the four most wonderful gifts anyone could receive. A good job, a home, an adopted family and the best friend I've ever known. I could never equal that nor improve upon it. Please allow me to give you a gift that will rebuild what we once had, and also improve upon it. Happy Thanksgiving, Neal Page." Neal apologies and accepts the offer. Del also marries his new girlfriend, then they all live in the same home together, like a big family.
      We never wrote much of the script except the synopsis and a few key scenes, but we wanted it to be focused on the character development of a friendship built, lost, and regained. We expected to get most of the character work done by CGI, like how Star Wars did for Princess Leia after Carrie Fisher died, with actors who could impersonate their voices well. It's also funny in a way how my friend Charles and I relate so easily to Neal and Del. I'm the thinner, silent, firm and focused Neal Page type; while Charles is the heavy-set, talkative, people person, Del Griffith type. We've had our ups and downs in our friendship over the last 26 years, and we both felt that our combined talents and ideas could make a good script for a sequel. Maybe someday it will be finished. We planned to call it "Neal And Del: Planes Trains and Automobiles 2." Simple name, but a very complex story with a lot of the same comedic ups and downs as the original. What were you thinking about doing in your sequel? I'd like to hear about it.
