    Why is the dark side inherently evil? It’s a lot like a drug. As Yoda has stated, it offers quick results but often leads to unforeseen consequences. You become sloppy and angrier. You come to depend on the dark side. “Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny”. It’s the very definition of imbalance within yourself.

      It’s more the sith that are evil, not the dark side itself.
      The sith abuse and twist the force for their own selfish desires and power.

    • @cyber_rachel7427
      @cyber_rachel7427 5 місяців тому +18

      I like the wider framing if the Dark/Light dichotomy as being oriented around power. The reason most Sith are evil is because of their desire for power ('There is no peace, there is passion; through passion, I gain strength; through strength, I gain power; through power, I gain victory; through victory, my chains are broken'). The lust for power that is inherent to the Dark Side is what ends up making most Sith focus on anger, fear, etc as the fuel for their force power, as they are, as Yoda points out, the 'easy path'.
      There have been Dark Side users who have used love, for example, as the source of their passion and power. It is ultimately framed as one of the deep ironies of the Sith, though. They desire nothing more than the power to break the chains which bind them... but the ultimate chains - mortality - can only be broken through the peace and serenity of the light side... which takes more work and, ironically, more power through self discipline for you to achieve
      SPOILERS FOR 7,8, 9, AND THE LEGENDS CONTINUITY:
      The obvious caveat being the ways that Palpatine cheats death repeatedly via cloning. But note the difference: the means by which a Dark Side user escaped death were artificial, but the ways in which Jedi have escaped death have been virtue if their Light Side alignment and the power of the Force itself

    One of the best lines of dialogue made by Lucas in the entire series: "It is too late for me, my son." That one sentence, for the first time, reveals a Vader who's vulnerable, who is showing regrets, who wants to be redeemed, but his guilt and self-hatred are still too powerful to overcome. It takes an act of self-sacrifice by Luke to show his father the way back, but that moment, I feel, is the actual turning point in the film on Anakin's redemption.

      @@thereisnopandemic way to completely misinterpret what someone said. They are obviously talking about abusive parents who behaved in uncool hurtful ways. The children in question wish that their parents had been more ideal and had not hurt them in the ways that they did. Case in point, Vader. Luke wishes he were a good guy, that he had not fallen to the dark side, and wants to get him to see that he can still be good. Idealized.
      Vader's fear and anger and hate and falling to the dark side because of attachment... are not earned wisdom in any sense. they are poor choices born out of attachment and immaturity and greed, as Yoda himself said "attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed, that is."
      This person isn't talking about immature infants who want mommy and daddy to give them more ice cream, it's about children of people who were dysfunctional and abusive that the children wish they could only see the light and that they COULD have made more informed less poor choices, particularly if the child themself can make them themselves. My mother is sometimes very afraid, of ordinary things. her fear taught me as a child that I should be afraid of these same things too. later in life, I discovered that she was wrong, that her fear was anything but rational. I did the things that scare her, (such as "asking for help when I need it," which scares her.) I DO wish I could "change" her by getting her to realize that she is good enough to ask for help and that no one will attack or hurt her (her fear) if she asks for help.
      I cannot change her and it's disappointing.
      You can't blame me or anyone else similar for wanting other people to be happy if they could just stop stopping themselves from it or having the largely irrational hangups that they have.
      She even said "there are so many kids who want to change their parents FOR THE BETTER."

    Firstly, what a wholesome, sweet reaction to the ending. I always cry at the end too lol. 2. Until the Emperor told him, Vader didn't even know his children existed. If you rewatch the scene in Ep. V, the Emperor says something to the effect of 'he is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker'. Then Vader asks how is this possible? (I can't remember the exact quotes, so don't at me, lol) So, you're ascribing a lot of loving parental emotions to Vader based on a false impression. Not to say that Vader didn't care for Luke, because obviously he did.

      Actually, Vader knew before the Emperor told him. Even before it was confirmed in the Marvel comics that take place between ANH and ESB, the dialogue in the earlier part of ESB shows Vader knows about "Skywalker" and he's obsessed with finding him. We learn in the comics that he found out the Rebel who destroyed the Death Star was named Luke Skywalker. He learns from Boba Fett.

    • @JebJebJebbers
      @JebJebJebbers 5 місяців тому +3

      even in the original comics from 1980 Vader found out it was Luke before Empire. He pretends not to know when confronted by the Emperor. But it's when Luke lets himself fall from Cloud City that Vader feels the light again. He's inspired that his son has the courage to stand against the dark side in a way that he didn't have the strength to. And on Endor Luke feels the conflict building within him until ultimately the light prevails. That's the point, as Darth Vader, Anakin is in total darkness and all it takes is the smallest spark of (a new) hope from Luke to bring the light that saves him.

    • @Daniel-415-Ponce
      @Daniel-415-Ponce 2 місяці тому

      When Vader asks the Emperor, "How is that possible?" (regarding the fact that Anakin has a surviving child), Vader is intentionally playing dumb. Vader had already learned about Luke's existence during events that occurred between Episodes IV and V (see, for example, the first Darth Vader comic book series published circa 2015). He intentionally kept this knowledge to himself. The Emperor, who has spies everywhere, learned about Luke without Vader having ever told him. If you listen carefully to the Emperor's intonation during his dialogue in Episode V when he and Vader are communicating via hologram, you can read between the lines and realize that the Emperor is essentially saying, "Cut the crap, Vader - - you already know what I am talking about here regarding Luke being Anakin's surviving child."

    Why is Luke's lightsaber green?
    - As Caleb said you will learn about lightsabers, how the Jedis use it (honestly not THAT complicated)
    - I think you can get more answeres to these questiuons in the tv shows like Clone Wars or Rebels,
    for ex.: How/when do the younglings construct teir first lightsaber, or learn more about Boba Fett, or how the Force works throughout the galaxy, more about the different species in the galaxy
    - The 6 movies are mostly about the story of the Skywalker family. The prequles tell you why, the when and the how, like - why did Anakin turn, how did the Jedis lose, or why did they hide Luke and Leia.

    You're already tapping into why the version of the Jedi Order led by Yoda and Obi-Wan is seen as flawed in many ways, and why it was prone to fall. By this point, the Jedi had become far too sure of themselves and set in their dogmatic view that any form of emotional attachments were bad. You're right -- it was Luke's defiance of their instruction to just ingore his feelings and kill his dad that led to the outcome that ended up saving everything.

    I first saw Star Wars in the theater in 1979 (I think). I was around 5-6 years old. It was the first movie theater experience I ever had, and it ended up affecting me profoundly and permanently. I loved The Empire Strikes Back and I remember as a 10-year-old lining up with my family to see Return of the Jedi on opening night - the first movie that my family and I ever did this for. My brother and I collected action figures - which I continued to do as an adult - and I read nearly all of the EU books (the ones for adults anyway). I've seen every Star Wars movie in the theater - most of them more than once - and every episode of Clone Wars, live-action Star Wars, and a lot of Rebels. I've also seen many people react to these movies on UA-cam, because I love sharing the experience of someone seeing them for the first time...
    All of that being said, I really enjoyed watching your reactions to the Original Trilogy (OT), and in particular, your connection with Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader despite knowing the full history of the character. In many ways it's impossible to go into these movies completely unaware of the "I am your father" line or that there are movies that tell the back story of Anakin or even scenes from different memes, so I was interested to see you discovering parts of the story that it's really hard for an adult in today's world not to have some knowledge about even if they've never seen the movies. I look forward to your continued journey.
    One thing I will add. While I certainly have my favorites among the OT as well and some Star Wars movies and show that I DON'T particularly enjoy, I would give you a word of warning: Don't let internet fanboys rob you of the pleasure of watching a Star Wars movie. There are definitely some that are better than others and there are some that I personally wish were done differently, but the reality is that how you view these movies has a lot to do with when you first saw them, which ones were your introduction, and how jaded you are. There are good scenes and moments in all of them (and some cringey ones too), but by and large they are a good time, and the worst one of them is still pretty fun. None of them are profound cinema (except maybe the first one, for its time), but they all have some great special effects, cool aliens, and big action set pieces.

    The Kyber crystals that power the lightsabers are strong in the Force and can sense the nature of the wielder. From what I know, a blue blade reflects the Guardians, who prefer to use the Force to enhance their combat skills. A green blade reflects the Consulars, those who use the Force to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the universe. A red blade is represented by a fall to the dark side. Their crystals are either synthesized or stolen from a Jedi and made to _bleed._

      No, it's in every Sith's nature to try to overthrow their master, take a new apprentice, and then their apprentice will try to do the same thing. The cycle continues. It's basically survival of the fittest. The Emperor wants to do the same thing. He never intended Luke to join the dark side as a third Sith Lord. He wanted to get rid of Vader and replace him with a new, stronger apprentice.
      The reason Vader doesn't immediately ask Luke to team up with him here is because Luke had already rejected his offer to join him, and Vader can sense that Luke has become a powerful Jedi (the Sith's mortal enemies). Vader expects him to kill the Emperor and Vader (which is what a typical Jedi would try to do, and what Yoda and Kenobi were training Luke for). Vader's loyalty and fear of the Emperor is still very strong.

    So a little thing about the lightsaber colors and why Luke’s new saber is green: Blue traditionally signifies a Jedi’s skill or proficiency in saber combat. Green sabers usually signify a proficiency in the Force and are used by many Jedi Masters. In this film, the green saber shows Luke’s growth from a farmboy to a fully fledged Jedi Knight/Master. 😊💚

  • @nightz_lol439

    The main reason (production wise) as to why Lukes lightsaber is green is because during the fight with jabba the hutt on the dunes of Tatooine the blue lightsaber just didnt look right against the blue sky so they decided to change it to green. In the "legends" of star wars it says luke went back to Tatooine after his battle with Vader on cloud city and he went to Kenobis hut where he found old jedi texts on kyber crystals where he then went in search for one and it was the one he found.

    The in-Canon reason as to why Luke’s saber is green is (particularly) because its focusing crystal is synthetic.
    Before Disney mucked up the lore, the scene where Luke built his new saber was included in the novel _Shadows of the Empire._ In the true lore, the Sith (the group of Force-users to whom Vader and the Emperor belong) forged synthetic crystals, as natural red crystals tend to be unstable.
    Not having access to natural crystals, Luke discovered the method for forging a crystal and set to work. But whereas the Sith poured all their anger and hatred into their crystals, Luke poured his goodness and understanding and will to find alternative solutions into his crystal.
    These are the attributes of Jedi Consular; warrior sages whose traditional saber color is green. This is also a cue that Luke is more willing to seek other solutions than straightforward violence to defeat Vader and the Emperor.

      @@jonsmith2832 no, he definitely needed the editors and the people refining the films into what they are.

    I never even looked at it like that.
    Your perspective on Luke wanting to change his parent for the better like many of us, creates a whole new level of relatable. And yeah i agree, i saw Vader as multi-facetted only with more context but you saw it way earlier than me ( with less Star Wars / Vader content consumed )

    I love how you think you know what the title of this episode means, but you don't really "know" what the title of this episode really means ... until the end ... that's just so good.
    I really liked your take on the parent-child relationship aspects of this movie, really great! The really interesting thing to me is that as a parent, Darth Vader's recognition of Luke (the child) saving him (the parent), is the parent's reconnecting to one of the important aspects of being a parent that is really easy to forget.

    The original idea was to have the final battle take place on the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk, but since Chewie is shown to be tech-savvy Lucas came up with the Ewoks for the primitive vs. advanced technology battle.
    Lightsaber colors are based on their focusing crystals which are tied to the user's stance in the Force.
    The Dark Side corrupts you. So while the Emperor is canonically only in his 60s he looks like a dehydrated corpse because of his use of the Dark Side.
    The most controversial edit: having Vader say "No" before turning on the Emperor.
    The original ending was just the Rebels celebration on Endor. For the 1997 Special Edition they changed the song and added shots of Tatooine, Cloud City, and the galactic capital planet Coruscant. The planet Naboo was added in the 2004 Special Edition because of its importance in the Prequels.
    Anakin's Force Ghost represents him before he fell to the Dark Side.

    Two changes to the original draft for your consideration:
    1) The Ewoks helping the rebels were originally Wookiees- Chewbacca's people, though he does take a shine to the Ewoks too.
    2) Originally the Falcon was going to be destroyed in the Death Star's explosion along with Lando and Nien Nunb (the anxious copilot).
