    "I am your father" was a huge reveal, but people often forget that no one going into this movie for the first time knew who "Yoda" was. When Luke lands on Dagobah and runs into this little green vagrant, he came off as just one of the locals. The fact the little frog man WAS Yoda was a mini-reveal in this movie. So glad you're watching in release order, btw. It's the only way to watch for the first time.

    You are pretty on-point with how special R2 is. Droids in Star Wars go through frequent memory wipes, C3PO has experienced at least one, but there are no recorded instances of R2 receiving a memory wipe that I know of. Combine an already quick wit with how long he has been around (40+ years at least iirc), and you get probably the most intelligent and self-aware droid in the galaxy.

      R2 never having a memory wipe is key, together with R2 being the narrator - hence why R2 is in absolutely everything Star Wars ever produced in canon.

    • @pelicanofpunishment6
      @pelicanofpunishment6 9 місяців тому +25

      Go into the Legends Canon a little...R2's last memory wipe would have likely been Naboo. He was likely due for one but then they had to leave. No memory wipe since. His personality and architecture got to the point that technicians couldn't prepare Luke's X-Wing without R2. He needed to be there to start it up or do a lot of maintenance on it. And he was also very protective of certain memories. And refused to even show Luke. But he'd recorded Anakin's fall and his choking of Padmé.
      I think as well, that because Padmé and Anakin couldn't be open about their relationship in public, that R2 basically was there for most of their time together partly to record it.

      R2 has received exactly ONE on screen memory wipe…that I’m aware of…in an episode of Clone Wars, he and 3PO are kidnapped by a bounty hunter and their memories of the incident were wiped so they couldn’t tell anyone…not a major wipe, but a wipe nonetheless

    One very interesting thing i liked is that Luke leaving Yoda to rescue his friends turned out to be the wrong choice in every way. Not only were his friends able to get themselves out, but Luke ended up being a liability to their escape as they had to go back and rescue him. Even more so that he learned the truth about Vader which he wasnt ready for. Luke is a hero whose actions weren't always the best and he made mistakes. People dont often see a story hero fail so abysmally. Thats why i like this move so much. Never once did the rebels or heroes have any kind of edge or win. They barely survived the movie.

    • @TheEricthefruitbat
      @TheEricthefruitbat 10 місяців тому +19

      Yes. Most people don't know what a hero really is. It isn't someone who always wins. It isn't someone who always does the right thing. It isn't even someone who always saves the day (though, in truth, they usually do in the end). A hero is someone who has accepted the challenge to become more than they are. THAT is Luke Skywalker.

    • @ghostbeetle2950
      @ghostbeetle2950 10 місяців тому +3

      That's all true, but at the same time Luke a) demonstrated his willingness to confront even the greatest monster face to face, when his friends are in danger, and b) by surviving the belly of the beast - which nobody does unscathed, paging Odin Allfather - he's also gained wisdom, and now knows what the real questions are.
      The point of all this being that in real life you never know one hundred percent if what you're doing is the right thing, or if it will end up biting you in the ass. In the face of that uncertainty, the only thing you can hope is that your virtues will be enough to carry you through, even if - no, WHEN - you land in a bad place. That is litterally the definition of a hero.

    We in the World had to wait three years for this sequel, so consider yourself lucky.
    I love how you call C3PO "Goldman". Very cute.
    In 1980, every kid wanted a Yoda backpack, including me, and I was 14. I'd still like to have one, but they are stupidly expensive.
    The cave on Dagobah is explained in the novelization of the movie. It is a home to the Dark Side, and the reason Yoda is hiding on Dagobah -- the planet is so powerful with the Force that he is virtually undetectable by other Force users.
    "I don't know jack shit." That's what makes your commentary so entertaining to we who have seen the movies uncountable times.
    The one advantage you have while watching this compared to us in 1980 is that you know there is another movie after this.
    The reason why the lightsaber duels look so slow and clunky in the first two movies is that Lucas had decided that the lightsaber was a very heavy, two-handed weapon, so that was his direction to the actors: act like this weighs 15 pounds. Over time, that idea went away in favor of more exciting on-screen duels.
    I'm amazed that you didn't know the big reveal of Luke's parentage. Even though you've never watched Star Wars before, it is such a huge twist in pop culture that I thought everyone knew it, kind of like knowing the twist in The Sixth Sense.
    In 1980, every fan was wondering the same thing: is Vader telling the truth, or just fucking with Luke?
    Empire came out to mixed reviews from both critics and fans. The dissenters were mostly grumbling about the lack of conclusion. When I left the theater with my dad, I said, "I think it's a pretty good bridge movie, for what it is. There HAS to be third one now." When Return of the Jedi came out, my opinion was confirmed. Empire was a perfect bridge movie, giving background, character development, and exposition that left fans dying for more. Although fans may disagree about the BEST Star Wars movie, almost everyone agrees now that The Empire Strikes Back was the best of the original trilogy.
    I will be waiting for your review of Return of Jedi. I wish I didn't have to wait. Your reviews of stuff like this are so much fun to watch. It's like the first time I showed the trilogy to my kids. In fact, you're younger than my kids, so yes, it is very much like that.

    A couple of interesting facts: Mark Hamill, who plays Luke, was in a bad car accident after filming 'A New Hope'. Luke getting attacked at the beginning of 'Empire Strikes Back' was a way to explain why Luke looks different .
    While filming the scenes with Yoda, Mark wore a radio earpiece, as Frank Oz, who voiced and puppeteered Yoda, was under the floor. Occasionally, Mark's earpiece would pick up an FM music station that was nearby.
    The Hoth scenes were filmed in Norway. While they were there, a massive snowstorm hit the area. Some snow scenes were literally filmed through the open door of the hotel/cabins they were staying in.

I think it was an episode of Clone Wars (though I could be wrong) that established the fact that all droids except R2-D2 get their memories wiped after each mission, but R2 has retained all of his memories from the time he was built. That’s why C-3PO (gold-man) doesn’t know what mission R2 is talking about at the beginning of A New Hope (episode 4)

    • @Zenshu1
      @Zenshu1 9 місяців тому

      The mission R2 talks about in A New Hope is the mission he was given by Leia as their ship was being borded to go find obi-wan and deliver the plans to him, it has nothing to do with 3PO having his memories wiped, 3PO wasnt with R2 when Leia gave hin the mission so he never had memories of it to be wiped even if there had have been time between leia giving him the mission and then bording the escape pod

    Re 14:30 when you're talking about R2's personality - I don't know what the modern answer is, but when I was a kid, the explanation of R2 and C3PO's personalities was basically that they're glitchy. Droids are "supposed" to be wiped, basically restarted and rebooted, every few years or so to make sure they maintain their basic functions. The longer they go without being wiped, the qurikier and more eclectic they get, which translates to having more personalities.
    When I was a kid, there were even stories in the fiction about people who thought it was unethical to wipe Droids because they sort of saw the process of developing a personality as developing sentience. Droids being second class citizens is kind of a theme throughout. Also important to note that (nearly) all of our heroes treat the Droids like people and friends rather than mechanical servants, with some exceptions, whereas the bad guys barely speak to theirs and just expect absolute compliance.

Mark Hamill told that he had an ear-pod, 1979 tech, to hear directions and the voice of Yoda. Yet, the radio from BBC got into his signal. While working with the Yoda puppet, he suddenly heard The Rolling Stones (1976 song “Fool to Cry”) So on the set, during filming, Mark breaks “Hey, I can hear the Stones!” And, the Director goes “Get back in character!” 🎸😉

    Hi Alex - I enjoy watching these Star Wars films with you. You have an incredible amount of energy and charisma that you bring to the table. Having seen all of these films in the theater when they first came out has been a wonderful experience. I wanted to point this out to you - imagine the shock and surprise you would have had even more than you just felt about Darth being Luke's father .....if....you hadn't heard the line before about" Luke, I am your father" compared to all of us that saw these original movies in 77, 80 and 83. It really blew our minds plus we had to wait 3 years in between films. Anyway, nice of you to share these reactions with us - thanks.

    I've been looking forward to you getting to this one ever since you started on the "Star Wars" saga. 😊
    This is my favorite of all the movies, and in my top 3 favorite all-time movie sequels.
    Fun, but Scary Fact #1: Mark Hamill(Luke Skywalker) was in a car accident prior to the filming of this movie. And the opening scene with Luke getting attacked by the Wampa(snow yeti) was added to explain the scars on his face.
    Love the addition of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in this movie. And of course, the introduction of Yoda(voiced by puppeteer Frank Oz) is always a wonderful moment.
    Fun Fact #2: During the "I love you" "I know" exchange between Leia and Han, Han's original line was supposed to have been "I love you too". But Harrison Ford thought it wouldn't be something that Han Solo would say. So he improvised the "I know" line. And that scene is one of the most memorable moments in the movie.
    The lightsaber fight between Luke and Vader is one of my favorite lightsaber duels in the franchise. And of course you've got the big Vader reveal at the end.
    You're lucky that you don't have to wait three years to find out if Vader was lying about being Luke's father and the fate of Han Solo.
    I'm already looking forward to your reaction for "Return of the Jedi".
    Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

      The scene in Indiana Jones, where Indy shoots a badass swordsman was also improvised. It was supposed to be a badass fight scene, but Harrison was sick, having a bad case of diarrhoea, so he couldn't do a physically demanding scene without "consequences". They ended up scrapping the fight and having him shoot the guy instead, which has turned into an iconic moment.
      It's too bad for the actor who played the swordsman, he had apparently trained for months to do the fight scene, only to for it to be changed because contaminated water had ill effects on Harrison Ford.

But everyone misremembers it the other way, and your brain had already heard it so much through osmosis that you literally quoted it as "Luke, I am your father" like two seconds after he actually said the real line, because it sounded similar enough to what you had heard, and it flipped a lightswitch on in your brain, and it altered what you thought you just heard... brains are so crazy

    14:10 he is…mostly because, as far as I’m aware, he’s only had one memory wipe…EVER…whereas 3PO has had several, and one was fairly large. If droids don’t get frequent memory wipes, they start to develop their own personalities and become borderline sentient…more so applies to less-humanoid droids like R2

      @TheMule71 10 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I was super confused by that.
      He seems not to see the connection there, as if imperial and empire were two different things.
      Empire is the noun, imperial is the adjective. It may also refer to the Emperor (or Empress).
      So the imperial army is the army of the empire, and the imperial crown is the crown the Emperor wears.

    River monster found out the hard way that R2 has some pretty good defenses. Such as that taser he will pull out in ROTJ when he gets his own version of revenge on the Ewok that drops him on his face. That taser is most likely also what he used here to defend himself.

    A couple of clarifications and facts:
    Mark Hamill (Luke) was actually injured in a car crash before filming. The scars on his face after the yeti thing attacks him are real and from his reconstructive surgery. That's also why he looks a but funny before he gets attacked; he was wearing makeup to cover up the fresh scars.
    Imperial is the word denoting anything to do with an empire. An empire has an imperial claim on land or an imperial army. It's the same word, just a different use. Like how you have Colony and Colonial.
    Chewie has human level intelligence. He's actually a war hero and over 100 years old.
    The AT-ATs (the walker robots on the snow planets) are piloted, that dude with the big grey helmet was in the lead walker.
    The strange troops on the snow planet are called Snow-Troopers, their armour gives them defence from the cold on planets like that. Otherwise they're basically Stormtroopers.
    Your theory about Vader fighting one handed is true. He was only testing Luke, while trying to back him into the Carbonite Freezing pit. He actually started trying after his plan failed and he realised he underestimated Luke.
    Your comment about taking bad advice to Vader is warranted. My favourite one of his murder quips is in this movie where Admiral Needa says "I'll take responsibility for losing them, and apologise to Lord Vader" then he gets told not to fail again, and after he fails again we cut to him choking on the floor as Vader says "Apology accepted, Admiral Needa." He tried to apologise again and Vader "accepted."
