    How many people have told you you look a lot like Candice Bergen? I love your videos! You have gotten me back into sewing garments after 45 years! You are so inspiring! I hated what I sewed when I was a girl, but I think I know what styles and fabrics are going to look good on me now. So here I go. Just spent 100$ on patterns and fabric!

    I can't tell you how much I adore watching your videos. I've learned so much about different types of fabric and how best to use them for certain patterns. My question for you is how much material do you buy when you do not have a specific pattern in mind but absolutely love the material. Not knowing if it will be a top, skirt, or whatever is hard to ensure you have enough yardage. Thank you again for sharing your talents, joy, and enthusiasm. You are treasured!!!

    Thank you so much for your tips! I'm going to stop second guessing myself and just go for it. Sometimes I think " oh, I'm too old for that" "that's a bit bright" etc So - no more! Thank you - I love your videos. You must be heading into spring - we're supposed to be heading into autumn but still very hot so your summer ideas are going to be applicable for "down under"!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому

      Hello Down Under, Jane!💕Yes - doing away with second guessing is a very freeing thing. It started in earnest when we were renovating our kitchen. You know how there are zillions of choices for appliances and cabinets and paint colors and flooring?? It can make a person nuts. I decided we would choose once and never question our decisions. It kept us moving forward and focused - even when the designer told us not to put in hickory cabinets. (She argued they’d be a poor choice for resale value. Who gives a fig for that? I’m using my kitchen now and I love hickory cabinets!) I encourage you to decide once and then run with it. If it comes up short, you’ll know for next time, and you’ll have saved yourself a bunch of uncertainty and indecision. And, girl, you’re not too old for anything!! (Except maybe tube tops, but I didn’t wear those when I was 20. LOL)

      Aww, this is so sweet Hazel, thank you! You really can visualize a garment in the fabric of your choice. Just take a couple moments to close your eyes and picture it. Sometimes I’ll do that and immediately realize the fabric I’ve chosen is all wrong. Easy enough to switch. This is why I must keep up an extensive fabric collection!!🤣

    The stripes and floral... very creative. Can hardly wait to see all these choices. I love this video. I need to see how others figure this out. It's very useful for me. I like the long styles too, although I don't wear them well. But I used to love some of the mini skirts/dresses but now they can be worn with some cute jeans, etc. ... Oh, and how about some big patch pockets on that big gathered skirt... even on an angle. I saw this and loved it, but haven't made it yet. Love all your finds... So inspiring. Lynn

      Aww, you’re a doll, Cut-Up and Sew.😄💕I struggle with it too, sometimes. I have a stretch velvet that my son would like me to make into a jacket for him, and I keep avoiding it. I feel like the velvet is going to be too floppy, and I should interline (underline?) it and interface it...blah, don’t want to do any of that! However I will face my fears and get it done because I’ve promised it to him by Spring. Wish me luck.

    Great video. I hope you make more of these. It was very helpful to see how you decide which fabric to go with the patterns, Sometimes it's hard to tell from the line drawings , the details that make a difference with the type of fabric one chooses. I wish you wouldn't watch the clock. Your videos are so short. I don't know if You tube doesn't allow you more time or what it is, but I could watch you for a minimum of half an hour, if not more. Can't wait to see your makes, especially that tan fabric with the long sleeve top and the stripe flower color blocking. Keep up the good work.

      Aww, Natalia, you’re so sweet. Thank you!!😄💕UA-cam doesn’t limit time but I don’t want anyone to have to sit too long through my blabbing. S1107 was a disaster, Peggy!😭I talk about it in my “Pop In” video; poorly designed pattern with those unnecessary gussets in the sides that fan out. Oh my. I’m working with it to get it wearable, and I’ve taken in and chopped off so much that it’s going to be a Barbie-sized top (kidding.) I’ll show it in my March Makes to warn folks away from the pattern. (To be fair, there are those who loved the pattern and rated it highly on Pattern Review.) Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and support!!💕

    Oh my goodness, love your videos. You have gotten me back into sewing for myself. I found a great bargain today and am so excited about it. I was going to my local Joanns since McCalls patterns are on sale for $1.99, great bargain there but I went in a Salvation Army store a few doors down just on a whim and Lord have mercy I found patterns for 50 cents. I bout 16 patterns, some current and some older ones but that just made my day and thought I would share.

Knit maxi skirt, knit shirt.......all cut out and ready to give it a try. Very easy patterns! Funny my patterns don’t need facing, bias tape. I see you use this technique. When I see the pattern or look book from Pattern companies...I usually try to match up the material/look...because it attracted me to that pattern. For example: sky blue jacket and dress on pattern picture...I go searching for it in the fabric store. I am new at sewing again. PS. I bought 45 patterns (most uncut today from a little old seamstress ...retiring. 45 patterns for $30. I was over the moon excited. A lot were wardrobe patterns - 4-5 outfits in one package.

    I realise that I take the same matching up approach as you although I’d never thought about it. If the right fabric doesn’t exist in my small stash, I don’t make up the pattern. End of. It pays to be choosy. You’ve got some lovely new fabrics there!

I have 8 tons of fabric and nothing will do?? Of course, that’s just a fine reason to do a little more fabric shopping...😂

    Great video Viv on something I guess a lot of sewists have trouble with. I think something that helps with that also is to go 'shopping' and have a good look at what fabrics they are using for what patterns. It really helps you get an idea of what you can do at home for most of the time a fraction of the cost. Love the floral linen from Fabric Mart.

    Good job in setting the camera up so that we can read the pattern envelope information. Although I can read backwards, it takes a little longer and I get caught up in that challenge instead of paying attention to the rest of what you are talking about in the February recap video . I really like that tunic you are wearing, and what a scrumptious color! Does it go with the dusty purple slacks you showed us? Did you mention the fabric type used in the tunic? I used to sew quite a few of my clothes but I no longer have a "perfect pattern figure," so I hate putting the time into making something and risk having it look awful on me. I appreciate your enthusiasm and the fact that you sew for DH, and that he is willing to show us the results --- and his interjections of numerous quips --- what a guy! Thanks for the smiles today.

I have mainly been using stretch fabric (I specialize in performance costumes) and have found them super forgiving and easy to work with ......IF you have a serger !!!!! I also recommend maybe playing with a surface design..like dying. Lots can be done with that... And I have NO drawing talent! I can see a bunch of beautiful ombre options with your solid fabrics😁

    Another great video Viv! Too short though. I have that dark blue novelty print fabric, too. I bought 3 yards way back from FM during an old pyramid sale. I finally decided that I'm going to make a long flowy duster out of most of it and a simple, cropped 'cardi' with the rest.
