@@erosrama3593 this is compared to forest early access itself, that took years to be finished, this will have less than a year since most of the stuff are done, more than when the forest early access released.
@@erosrama3593 agreed. We just finished the Story. While it has some good ideas it was way too short and made no sense. We all were really disappointed.
The graphics in Sons of The Forest reminds me of the visuals in Red Dead Redemption 2 for some reason. The assets, daytime lighting and general vibe seem vaguely similar between the two, which is a huge compliment to Sons of The Forest.
It is because Sons of the forest is built in unity HDRP. Pierre Yves Donzallaz, this guy is the senior technical art manager at unity and he was a lead lighting artist at rockstar games, and worked on RDR2. I was working with unity HDRP and saw all the HDRP features and documentations is presented by this guy.
Another quality comparison. Loved The Forest but SOTF is such a huge improvement, even though there's still a lot of work to be done. Also, hotkeys were added last night. Sooo much better now.
yea it is, but i dont know wich enigne it is..... It looks ok, everyone can do a good looking forest in modern Engine`s, its so simple, so i am not really impresses,i think it looks pretty bad for a game with only forest tbh
I think I liked not having important stuff marked on a map. Like I liked just blindly exploring the Forest not knowing if I was going to stumble upon something important. I think the game went by too fast in Sons of the Forest because I knew where to look for everything. It was a great game overall tho!
Same. The GPS markers defeat the purpose of exploration for me. Completely killed the game for me. That and not a single cave with a climbing rope or alternate path.
It literally allows you to speed run the game. Actually ruined the game for me. My group of 3 had infinite supplies and never had a good reason to build a base, hunt, shit honestly we never even had to craft armor or anything else. Game spoon feeds you everything. I was full on just about every kind of consumable
@@666Daheretic yeah hopefully in the future updates they'll expand on the caves systems, cause all the non-story caves were only just a room with supplies. And May they can keep the GPS, but you have to find the coordinates to different locations by exploring other caves

I wonder if Sons of the Forest will get VR support like the Forest had. The Forest in VR was a lot of fun, but also an easier game lol. You would swing your axe and weapons as fast as you could swing your arm, and not wait on an animation, making gathering wood and fighting much easier. The only real downside, for me at least, was that in VR, bows were difficult to use, so I avoided them.
Bows were not difficult to use in VR. They were way easier to use in VR than in flatscreen. My group hated when I played in VR because I would kill everything with my bow before they could. All about knowing how to shoot a bow and adjusting to the games limitations.
The sound of the first forrest is better imo, it' more like horror movie, where everything is slighly subdued so you feel a constant danger and a strain.
You should do a video on the best graphics for each specific category. Like what game has the best Water, smoke, fire, rain, explosions etc. Would be cool to see since you have compared so many games old and new.
@@StormyMainShorts Red Dead Redemption 2 which came out 5 years ago, metro exodus (6 years old), TLOU2 (3 years old). I just find games that have come out recently haven’t really pushed the envelope of good art design and good graphics. Sotf to me more or less looks like a Unreal 5 asset flip.
@@nairbas392 metro yes, not the others. And only metro enhanced. Red dead is about equivalent but with less pleasing lighting imo and tlou2 loses to tlou part 1
Really good comparison! Some of the comparisons like the enemies sitting on rocks and in trees is presented like it's an improvement or only present in SOTF, however it's present in both games.
It's just broll footage. The fact of the matter is the AI, especially for those low-level cannibals, is far more complex than the scripts used in the old game. I watched these things for like.. 30min and they do some cool things, like hide directly in bushes, strafe to the side to get a better look, climb trees and hop between them (this happened in the old game too but not like this), and even hide inside piles of leaves and jump out at the player.
the AI in both games is very very interesting when payed close attention to. In the forest 1, I remember training the AI to be so scared of me I really rarely ever had to fight anything outside of any caves or camps.
the shadow from the canopy of trees cascading over you is like 90% of what makes it look so much more real. That and the high res textures and more foliage.
you can actually set hotkeys by dragging your mouse on top of the item (for an example an axe) and you just press a number and it will set to it. awesome video and i enjoy the improvements of this game!
I really love The Forest and playing Sons of the Forest made me realize how much i love these kind of games. It's not that The Forest had aged "bad" in my opinion, but with 4k and Ray-Tracing graphics, out standards to what is considered good graphics, has risen. (And that is totally fine ofcourse!) but i still very much enjoy playing the first Forest game. It's like playing and old version of Minecraft without Mods kinda :D
I like sons of forest and hope they have some huge updates. I would love to see more crafted items. Maybe have where you can craft some things through your backpack, but other things you need a workbench. Like Ammo or timebombs or maybe some attachments for the weapons. The story seems short, but overly hard for one person to do. You can cheese it and run through the cave and grab what you need, but then did you really play the game. I think this needs to be addressed. Like, the AI should be tuned to the amount of players you have playing on your server when you're in their area. Lower hp for 1 but more for two and crazy at 8.
i like the PRESS E notifications much better in the old TheForest as it is slightly hidden from view. in Sons of the Forest the PRESS E is not only HUGE its actually COLORED boldly.
Fun Fact: When building the little tarp shelter in Sons, you don't even need to equip a stick. As long as the arrow icon appears, if you click, it'll automatically take a stick out for you.
I'd love to see updates to the tree falling sounds to be much louder and echo, along with potentially alerting inhabitants to investigate. This combined with more building options and maybe adding options to the creation menu, such as HUD, availability of resources (or tweaking the hunger/thirst meters for more challenging play), and some more enemy variety, will make this game a fantastic sequel.
Looking forward to a lot more buildables! Also, it would be nice if season length was something you could change. I get why some people don't want very long seasons but having winter last for a long time could be fun little challenge.
it would be cool to choose specific seasons to be longer, since it seems like they only offer completely shortened or completely lengthened years at the moment. imagine a 30+ day winter and only a 5 day summer, just scrambling to dry enough meat and store enough water
SotF still has it's issues, but to say little, it certainly is a massive overall to the series and a welcomed one at that. I just hope they add more options for roofs as I've found that it's impossible to fill the corners of a slanted or A-Frame roof UNLESS you do some tinkering. Which, in the end, didn't even consider the structure as enclosed unfortunately.
Thanks so much for this in depth comparison! I am loving Sons of the Forest and haven’t played the first one. So seeing how it’s improved is really neat.
Need rafts back...also can't drink fresh water from creek or lake with spear in hand. Need locks for doors and gates for compound. Should be an option for Kelvin to defend himself or defend base. I find myself baby sitting him a lot.. maybe he can be used to repair base with the repair tool. Kelvins best asset.. he can catch fish and a lot near a river. He is like a mentally challenged brother that only means good so take care of him. I am sure the new patch will be an improvement.
you can tell these devs want you to have fun. they care little about the player models, but damn, the polish on everything else is just so beautiful, especially for early access
They just need to tweak the resources. Items shouldn’t respawn, instead a plane could “crash” every now and then and scatter resources all over the place. I dont consider it survival game because I always have MRE and energy drinks and there’s no need to hunt. “You could just ignore those” no, if they respawn, it’s legal, and friends end up picking them anyways
I honestly felt like Sons of the forest went too fast to finish. The GPS system made exploring really easy, you just went to these green marks and you eventually finish the game without having to explore anything else. Also building a base is useless unless you enjoy building since it is not needed in any way to finish the game. You just left your base to "explore a bit" and you ended up in the end cave out of nowhere. A beautiful game in many aspects, I really liked it but it felt too short, took me like 14 h to finish...
I loved The Forest and right now I am speechless with the quality of Sons of The Forest considering that the game was developed by a small indie studio. I played more than 40 hours in the new game and i must to say it´s incredible. But in the survival aspect i think it´s way easier than the previous one because the insane amount of boxes with supplies, but in the other hand... the cannibals are way stronger in this new game.... at least in the normal dificulty. (im playing in Single Player) And the Npc´s works pretty good in this game. Im in love with the work Endnight studios.... Both games are great.
Going to be honest...the co-op characters look fine. I'm happy when a game like RDR2 does what it does but I'd rather have gameplay/environmental depth over "realistic" animations.
It looks like a tescelated shader theyre using for the tree chopping not voxels. Basically the same method they use to leave snow tracks except on the tree using the axe head position as th edisplacement point. Im suprised this hasnt been done before tbh.
The only thing I don't really like about sons of the forest is the lack of the log sled, complex effigies you can mount whatever on, no turtle shell rain catcher, also some form of transport like a working version of all the busted golf carts lying around would be nice, map is pretty huge
I am glad to see some content creators (such as yourself) who are pointing out what an amazing experience Endnight Games has created. The little details are important. This game gets my 2 thumbs up and it's not even complete.
Man I was so hyped for The Forest... but it took so long for them to finish the game I just gave up. Got a couple of fun hours out of it tho, during lockdown.
I noticed the game has some performance issues that I hope still get addressed. I am currently getting a better framerate (by quite a large margin) on Elden Ring than I do in SOTF. I by no means have a super bulky PC, but it seems odd to me that I can run Elden Ring so much better, it being a far more demanding game. Several threads online indicate that I am not the only one having this issue. Apart from that I am enjoying the game a lot. Massive improvement over the first one and incredible that it took just 15 people to make a game this good.
I actually like the lack of hot keys, if they allowed you to move with the backpack up it would be way better. Also maybe add a dedicated button to it, at least for pc. I do like the old exploration better, because it was actually exploration. Marking points of interest, explored caves, etc. Now it feels like any other game, it telling you where to go. I can beat the game in an hour without using any bugs. Unlike the Forest where i went months (irl) without learning that there was a map and compass. It felt realistic relative to the situation you are in.
Both games look unfairly bad due to UA-cam compression. I play the game on ultra and it looks way better than this. UA-cam likes to compress data especially when the player looks at a detailed surface like grass. Another example of this is Ark survival evolved.
I REALLY hope they add more content, places of interests, crafting recipes, etc. The game felt kind of empty once you leave the initial island side. Many of the caves had nothing at all in them. Hope they are planning to release more.
@@888Marco Oh absolutely. Especially for base building. You can't build on water, no fireplace, no bonfire, no couches, no rock walls, no fur decorations, less traps, etc. Its pretty bare.
When I first saw the gameplay for SotF, being unfamiliar with the series, I was kind of excited, then I realized it was one of those creepy, gory zombie fighting games. I would enjoy a game like this a lot more if it were a strategy game, kind of like a cross between civilization and minecraft. Mine iron, copper, coal, etc, tech tree and all that.
One of the big dudes I killed had this crazy skull club with a spine on it, hoping like in the original we can upgrade crafted weapons with teeth and other body parts
I do wonder how they keep performance on moveable objects such as trees and bushes, with realtime/updating every frame; shadows, reflections and lighting..
The lighting and shadows alone make SotF far superior in immersive and realism. I don't remember the first looking as bad at my last time of really playing it years ago, but when I went back just before starting the new one, it was a night-and-day difference of quality. You'll still know it's The Forest...it's just the 2020's The Forest
Sorry if it has been said 100 times in the comments before, but there are still hotkeys. You just need to move your mouse over the item and press a number between 0 and 9
Just as someone who hasn't played Sons but has played some of the original, it seems like every few in game days would be too short of a cycle for the seasons.
There are hot keys. You just have to go to inventory. Hold over the weapon or item and then press the number you want them to be. 1 to 9 so more than the forest
Sons of the forest caves are too small I feel like the combined area of all the caves for sons of the forest is about as big as one cave from the original game
Played both games. Hands down, Sons of the Forest is an improvement in every single way including the story. There's a lot of nostalgia working for people when it comes to The Forest.

-It appears Sons of the Forest received a hotfix last night that added in hotkeys (nice!)

Sons of the Forest is in a very good place right out the gate.
No its not. The caves are empty, the map is way too big and also empty, there is no dialogue, and its a buggy mess and poorly optimized
@@erosrama3593 is forest good?
@@erosrama3593 this is compared to forest early access itself, that took years to be finished, this will have less than a year since most of the stuff are done, more than when the forest early access released.
@@gamersforlife3440 yes
@@erosrama3593 agreed. We just finished the Story. While it has some good ideas it was way too short and made no sense. We all were really disappointed.
The graphics in Sons of The Forest reminds me of the visuals in Red Dead Redemption 2 for some reason. The assets, daytime lighting and general vibe seem vaguely similar between the two, which is a huge compliment to Sons of The Forest.
I can see that!
RDR2 looked beyond amazing
ong bro the game is just red dead but survival in a forest with canniballs
Fr they did a good job
They both try to bring the wilderness alive with emersion being a primte incentive.
Sooo much better now.
legit man, I was so keen about the hotkeys. I'm so excited for what's to come.
yea it is, but i dont know wich enigne it is..... It looks ok, everyone can do a good looking forest in modern Engine`s, its so simple, so i am not really impresses,i think it looks pretty bad for a game with only forest tbh
@@DubElementMusic Unity
oh yes we need hotkeys! forget about the story written by a 3 year old.
I had hot keys done via xpadder anyways
Yeah I agree. They could keep those gps markers as those are for the story, but everything else should go
@@666Daheretic yeah hopefully in the future updates they'll expand on the caves systems, cause all the non-story caves were only just a room with supplies. And May they can keep the GPS, but you have to find the coordinates to different locations by exploring other caves
gps sucks because its only really a local map, ye olde paper map was the whole island and it had a cave map
I hope they can get even more and greater devs working on the game. So many bugs but so much potential. I keep accidentally finding bugs, especially dupes
Dude
too many bugs 😭
There aren't that many bugs, a few bugs are to be expected for early access. Serious over-exaggeration.
@@user-be8jp5dl8n its early access bro? what do you expect? there isnt many considering its in early access
@@fi7959 True, not that many bugs, but the performance is pretty bad at times... Seems like DLSS doesn't do jack, sometimes even lowers performance? Hope they fix this soon, I'm having a blast though.
kelvin cutting down your treehouses was just fixed in the latest update!
*Player spends many hours building a tree house, requires Kevin to get logs for something minor*
Kevin "don't worry bro, i've got this all under control"
*Kevin chops down your tree house, turns around, smiles and gives you the thumbs up like nothing happened*
I'm so glad the team is still creating installments for this game series.
been waiting for your video for the comparison of the two and im so glad its here
5:45 If you show this image to someone suddenly, they would believe it as real !!
@@666Daheretic I'm good on flatscreen. I don't have VR so idk.
the other downside to vr is jumpscares
The sound of the first forrest is better imo, it' more like horror movie, where everything is slighly subdued so you feel a constant danger and a strain.
I was just scrolling through the comments looking for someone talking about the sound and I finally found you and that's exactly how I feel lol
You should do a video on the best graphics for each specific category. Like what game has the best Water, smoke, fire, rain, explosions etc. Would be cool to see since you have compared so many games old and new.
if you hover over an item in your inventory then press a number you'll assign it to your quick bar.
ive got the game on low settings cause my gpu doesnt have enough ram but it still amazes me how beautiful it is on lower settings
It is also really nice to see that the pc I built when The Forest came out, still is able to handle the sequel really well.
This is one of the best looking games I've seen
Lmao what games are you looking at?
I agree, its very beautifull
@@nairbas392 look at sotf, then tell me a game with better graphics in a similarly complex setting
Red dead is about equivalent but with less pleasing lighting imo and tlou2 loses to tlou part 1
fell in love with Sons of the Forest the moment i saw the stunningly beautiful visuals!
14:26 You can get hotkeys, When u are in the inventory hower over an item and klick a button from 1-9 and there u have it
Really good comparison!
@@Nick930 Indeed, it can sometimes be fun to let the canibal AI do it's thing and not distrube it, they sometimes just leave you alone.
the AI in both games is very very interesting when payed close attention to. In the forest 1, I remember training the AI to be so scared of me I really rarely ever had to fight anything outside of any caves or camps.
the shadow from the canopy of trees cascading over you is like 90% of what makes it look so much more real. That and the high res textures and more foliage.
Nice, expansive comparison video! I hope the game gets even better. Could anyone tell me the music track used in this video? I like it a lot.
The forest still looks okay especially for a 2014 indie game
Hotkeys was added a few hours ago btw.
Cool. Was desperately needed.
you can actually set hotkeys by dragging your mouse on top of the item (for an example an axe) and you just press a number and it will set to it.
awesome video and i enjoy the improvements of this game!
Lower hp for 1 but more for two and crazy at 8.
i like the PRESS E notifications much better in the old TheForest as it is slightly hidden from view.
in Sons of the Forest the PRESS E is not only HUGE its actually COLORED boldly.
fucking hell i am getting old. i remember seeing forest (2014) and thinking about how amazing it looks and how tree cutting look and works :D
love sons of the forest so much more than the first! cant wait to see this game grow as time goes on
Fun Fact: When building the little tarp shelter in Sons, you don't even need to equip a stick. As long as the arrow icon appears, if you click, it'll automatically take a stick out for you.
Can't wait for them to add in a VR mode like the first game had!
Season length can be changed in the custom difficulty options when starting a new game 👍
it would be cool to choose specific seasons to be longer, since it seems like they only offer completely shortened or completely lengthened years at the moment. imagine a 30+ day winter and only a 5 day summer, just scrambling to dry enough meat and store enough water
So seeing how it’s improved is really neat.
same. love the versatility of the building mechanics, breathtaking visuals.
i'm amazed with son of the forest enviroment, the forest design looks very realistic it's crazy
14:30 actually you can create your own hot bar by going in you inventory (the mai one) and hover on an item and the press a number between 1-9
Yes, You can NOW. You could not when this video was released. That feature was only just added in a recent hotfix.
1:36 what animation 💀
you can tell these devs want you to have fun. they care little about the player models, but damn, the polish on everything else is just so beautiful, especially for early access
If they wanted me to have fun, they should add an actual ending into the game that makes sense. It’s nonsense right now.
you can use hotkeys just press a number on an item in the inv.
or change the hotkeys on an other key normaly its 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
Endnight really knows how to make survival games.
306 hrs in the Forest VR. I got to know them very well. Making them fear you is taxing on your sanity.
They’ve done such a great jobs with this game. I’m really hoping they keep updating it over time with new content.
SOTF main menu music is an actual slap, its epic
Waiting for the console release. Hopefully not too many years!
Most likely next year
Too
I loved The Forest and right now I am speechless with the quality of Sons of The Forest considering that the game was developed by a small indie studio.
I played more than 40 hours in the new game and i must to say it´s incredible.
But in the survival aspect i think it´s way easier than the previous one because the insane amount of boxes with supplies, but in the other hand... the cannibals are way stronger in this new game.... at least in the normal dificulty. (im playing in Single Player)
And the Npc´s works pretty good in this game.
Im in love with the work Endnight studios.... Both games are great.
Going to be honest...the co-op characters look fine. I'm happy when a game like RDR2 does what it does but I'd rather have gameplay/environmental depth over "realistic" animations.
you currently get a cutscene when you proper die, where you see your character's model from in front for a few seconds
I remember when I just started to play the Forest, I was impressed with the graphics. But they are on a whole new level in Sons of the Forest
Hotkeys were added yesterday during the 2nd hotfix patch.
i feel like it was more than hot keys my dude also runs faster unless that just me tripping lol
It looks like a tescelated shader theyre using for the tree chopping not voxels. Basically the same method they use to leave snow tracks except on the tree using the axe head position as th edisplacement point. Im suprised this hasnt been done before tbh.
First time I saw the transition from summer to fall I was blown away
I think I'm in love with this game. It just looks so charming.
That's actually crazy, the gps just tells you where the caves are
Can’t wait for Grandsons of The Forest!
Or the daughters.
for the audio there is a major bug where if there is a cannibal screaming far away it will be right in your ear also the ambient wind is obnoxious
Sons of the forrest is a massive upgrade, hope they figure out a way to handle all the bugs. Great video!
Hope they are planning to release more.
does The Forest have more items and crafting recipes? just curious
@@888Marco Oh absolutely. Especially for base building. You can't build on water, no fireplace, no bonfire, no couches, no rock walls, no fur decorations, less traps, etc. Its pretty bare.
@@Thepippinator2 oh ok, i will keep playing the forest and wait than, thanks for the replay
kelvin no longer chops down trees you have structures on!!! and even more building options, and gear. yay for early access lol
very informative. Great video
5:27 I never realized that the pine trees were dropping brown leaves... you'd think a team that lived in Canada would catch that mistake
even with the early access now i’d say it was worth my money i’m excited to see the new content added
You can hot key items in the new game by hovering over an object on the mat then pressing 1 through 8 to bind that item to a hot key. ;)
For some reason the fire on the held torches in the first game looks better
Plus the animals in this game don't stop randomly while you're chasing them.
Shoutout from Dice, Sweden Stockholm
been waiting for this vid! hells yeah
Nick will you be doing NFS unbound Vs NFS Heat??
Still on the todo list, i didnt forget that one
There are hot keys. You just have to go to inventory. Hold over the weapon or item and then press the number you want them to be. 1 to 9 so more than the forest
I kinda feel like Kelvin should be a cannibal you can train to be follower rather than something you have from the start
Sons of the forest caves are too small
I feel like the combined area of all the caves for sons of the forest is about as big as one cave from the original game
Played both games. Hands down, Sons of the Forest is an improvement in every single way including the story.
There's a lot of nostalgia working for people when it comes to The Forest.
