- Bad battery voltages seen in the torque pro app
- The internal combustion engine (ICE) not kicking on
- the 0 and ready lights on your dash board not lighting up
- The car won't go into Reverse or Drive

Awesome video, very helpful! I have the change to buy a 2006 Prius for $800 which has the dreaded red triangle light. After watching a couple of video's I'm pretty sure I'll buy it and fix it myself.

I just replaced 4 cells in my 04 Prius. My bus bars were NASTY!! I popped them out of the plastic strips and sanded them all with 600 grit sandpaper. I did NOT power balance my cells and I had no issues. Now onto that ABS code I have.... Great video!! And I use torque pro all the time and I had NO idea it could access Hybrid info on a Prius!!
Did you ever run into any issues after not balancing the cells?
Sometimes, the lower voltages don't appear until I'm accelerating when the modules are under load. Only then did I find out which cells were bad. Thanks for the video.

I tried my darndest to get those 14 Battery Module PIDs to show up! What A PITA! ...a few hours later I finally figured out how to import the PIDs I wanted so i can monitor my HV battery! Works well!
On the main battery pack there is a disconnect on the driver side rear corner. The disconnect has a lever on the top it needs to be in the down position for the gas motor to start also there is a fuse in the disconnect. This should start it up but the battery pack has to have cells of eaqual value and clean connections or the battery pack will not take a charge.

Your videos have been incredibly helpful for me. I used torque for the before and had a reconditioned battery installed a few years ago. Yesterday the light came on again. I opened torque and almost all of the pairings were at 16.4/16.5 except for block 13 which was at 14.9/15. Would that possibly be the cause?

You can get Torque Pro through the android app store for 4.95. You'll need an OBD2/Bluetooth adapter which you can find on ebay or amazon, I haven't had much luck with the cheap ebay ones but the one I got off Amazon for around 20 bucks works perfectly.

All my cells are at 15.2 - 15.4 The battery wont charge more than half way and getting the red triangle P0AA6 code. Hybrid battery voltage system isolation fault and getting 32 mpg. I load tested the modules and removed the battery and all seems within range.
Purchsed OBD2 on ebay $22 `BAFX Blue tooth adapter, and Torque Pro on line in app store for my android tablet $4.99,
Then downloaded pid list, created directoruy under Torque/
Then in torque pro through the menu there is a place where it loads all the pids for you. Now under realtime in torque pro you goto a screen you want to load the pids you want and add them one at a time setting the location and size. I loaded all the Voltage items i could find and some temperatures as well.
Plugged in the OBD2 in my preus 2008 and on the tablit connected them. Once that was don went into the real time page with all the voltages i added and took a gander then went for a drive and got the big red triangle and engin pivture on the dash board. In torque pro looked up the codes P3017,P3018,Pxxx.
They all talked about how it ccould be a bad cell.
Car runs great then after 20miles i get the red triangle.
Some times it stops charging the battery until the car stops with no power. Wait a few min and restart the car it charges and im good for a day or 10miles. I replaced cell 17 it was 2volts less than the others when tested. Purchased 3 new cells for $140 shop around these are ACE Hybread.
I experienced the same ,,,the car died 2007 gen 2 pack needed 4 modules , for the guys who don't have a fancy meter but have the harbor freight freebie volt meter
you can set the meter to read voltage (remove the tin shield on your traction battery after you pull up and rock out the orange plug)
pull the plastic exterior shields but leave the nuts and copper connectors on and tight....
set volt meter to dcv 20 and read each cell pack you don't have to have red on red black on black...the digital values will just alternate to - readings if wires are reversed.
write down volt values per cell...it should be no lower than 6.5 volts per cell. then change you handy dandy meter to 1.5 (4.0ma) setting this setting is one click "cw" past 200 acv 200...this is for reading milliamps or the condition of each cell.
(the meter suggests this is for reading 9 VOLT fire alarm battery's...innards. but since your Prius battery is close at 7.5 volts each...the readings are virtually the same as Duracell 9 volt
the meter should show 16 millis to 23 millis per 1 Prius cell......and nope you don't have to remove the coppers or nuts to isolate the cell. just read thru each cell.....and no you will not get shocked if you touch the battery anywhere as long as the orange plug is out. and nope you don't have to worry about polarity red to red ,,,it can easily do millis in reverse black to red...
it saves hours and hours not having to worry about polarity.
as for battery balance....this advice is not worth a hoot....its for the rich guys..not the broken gotta works guys.
just get the cars cells close in values and run it thru a few power loads......or place the car in maintenance mode follow you tube vids how to do the 2 step pedal trick...and the motor will fire up and charge both battery's....while you go fishing or find bologna sandwich...! then load the battery on a hill....and recharge 3 times.......even with the triangle of death on the car should drive and run ok...if not ...remove debris from your maf sensor under the hood by throttle. use mass air flow spray ONLY.
I just bought a 2008 highlander hybrid w/197,000km. it has one green battery bar missing. Should I have gone to the dealer to get a print out on my cells. How much would that be? Or should I get a ODB( recommendations?) keep track of my real time stats? Jeez my first tank in -23C I got 15.9L/100km! Im hopeful for better milage this week as its now only -14C. I asked Prius V cabs and they get around 7-8L/100km in that weather....Jeez I am taking a hit just to have an extra row of seats and AWD. Appreciate your info and time. Bob from Winnipeg.
I'm not too familiar with highlanders, but a quick google search seems to indicate you should be getting better fuel economy than that.
I would definitely get a bluetooth OBD2 adapter and torquepro to scan for any codes and monitor your battery.
It is expected though for a Prius V to get decently better fuel economy than a hybrid highlander though, it seems hybrid tech doesn't work as well in larger vehicles than it does in purpose built smaller ones.
Winter fuel blends do seem to lower fuel economy as well, and with as cold as it is where you are, possibly even more so than most places in the US.
I'd suggest checking everything else on your highlander to see if it's in good shape. Tire pressure, air filter, spark plugs, correct weight engine oil, etc.
none of the pids for prius battery are showing movement or that is picking up anything....any suggestions?

i have my torque pro app . got a POA80 code on my prius 2012. when driving , all my modules show 15.5 and all go up to 17.8 V. during active driving. is there a way to check and detect a bad cells with torque pro app , not taking out whole battery and load testing it ? when the engine stops ,and AC is on , how fast must the voltage drop ? till what number ? 13 V or lower ? what is the normal drop rate in this case, when AC is on , on neutral with engine off ?

How do you get the PIDs on the main screen like that? I've loaded them on and can see them in the settings menu but I'm not sure how to get them on that screen
Wesley Dofflemyer from the main screen hit the realtime information icon, then the settings icon (gear icon), add display, choose how you want it displayed, then find your pid it should be near the top starting with [Prius]

No, the vehicle doesn't have to be connected. I also have the PIDS for my Ford 6.0 powerstroke loaded and they show up just fine when connected to my prius or not connected at all.
I'll make a video soon on how to load all the pids you need from the beginning.
The new cell has to be charged to the level of the older cells which ensures minimal variation. If the variation is above manufacturers spec for oyur type of batter, the system will stop the car from going to ready mode.

Balance. Costs and Uses. Pleasure of headaches and comforts. Maintenance of old and new. Got headaches or pleasures of troubleshooting cracks of old versions. Still cars are manufactured to new models every year that engineers knew how to upgrade and update hardware/software. Maybe electronics made something that parts may become obsolete to deliver price-wise and economy-wise. Or someone may just consider they thought they are saving. Why not enjoy that latest model in exchange? Of course, pleasures got equivalent costs - it is just ... plain choices. Have nice coffee.
Another issue is the engineered intentional design of suboptimal quality parts. They are designed ,(with orders from up high) to fail post warranty but prematurely and every effort is made to encourage owners to bring them to the dealer for repair at exorbitant prices. Toyota used to make extremely well engineered vehicles that rarely broke and when they did dealer repairs were reasonable. I've owned them from the late 70's up to today. Sometime around the late 90's Toyota mgt noticed GM's strategy and began to let long term reliability suffer to increase dealer profitability thru repairs and new car sales. This trend accelerated during the company's push to become the planets largest automaker. Overall they still make better cars compared to their competitors but some of their models have some major issues. I have an 03 4runner and an 08 Prius currently and am happy with both but I would be VERY careful if I considered buying a new Toyota.

I really appreciate these videos! My 09 Prius is approaching 170k miles so I'm glad to be able to monitor all this stuff. One thing I've noticed is that on the HV SOC pid the percentage will only say around 70 precent when the cars display says it's at full bars or nearly full bars. Is it technically supposed to charge to 100 percent? Does it mean my battery is no longer able to have a full charge? Or does it just measure the percentage in a strange way? Also, I've noticed that while driving my packs will go down to 13.6 to 13.9 for lowest point, is it normal for packs to go that low during driving? Like if I was going up a hill or really laying on your gas? Thanks again!
From what I've seen and heard, the battery SOC indicator on the dash is not scaled to the actual SOC of the battery. If I recall correctly, one bar or less means near 40% SOC, while full is around 70-75% SOC. Toyota does this so that you don't really use the entire capacity of the battery, maximizing its lifespan.

PSA: Just to say that the cheap regular ELM327 OBD2 readers on Eby/Amz DO NOT for $3-12 DO NOT have the ability to read/add the HV BATT PIDs on TORQUE Pro. Also, the Kuulaa OBD2 reader, even with the OBD2 comm protocols DOES NOT SHOW HV VOLTAGES. I bought the Veepak WIFI Obd2 on Amz $19 and IT WORKS. BAFX Wifi OBD2 $27 ALSO WORKS. **Now I'm just researching what's the NORMAL VOLT HV RANGE PER CELL, as mine are Lowest: 11.7-12.1 Highest: 18.9-19.1, and I don't have Red Triangle nor CEL codes for HV batt. Unsure if cleaning the copper HV posts will fix issue, or if I should just get a reconditioned HV battery off of LOCAL FB marketplace.
On my 2007 prius it showed block 13 as lower voltage with the torque app. I removed the battery pack and checked every single cell. I found cell 4 reading 6.94 and the rest reading 7.9 CDC. I replaced block 13 both cells and cell 4. The used cells I purchased were at 7.5 vdc. Now I get codes for the batteries I replaced. So I think I need to balance them since the error codes comes up still.
did you get fixed? you can load your cells and recharge you cells in maintenance mode they should all be balanced after 3 load cycles...yes you can load your cells while the triangle of death is on...limpmode.

Now I'm not familiar with hybrids or the Prius but from what I understand battering balancing is matching the capacity to the other cells it has nothing to do with charge but more of to do with capacity AKA you measure the amount of amperage you get out of it per hour until it goes flat known as amp hours and you match those batteries up with ones with similar or the same capacity that's what I know what battery balancing is
The one thing I learned the hard way is not to leave carbonated beverages in the back no matter the weather. I had 5 cans of 12 pack of Coca-Cola explode from the heat. I had no idea what happened until I went to get stuff to take inside. We removed all carpet from the back wiped everything sticky down with alcohol & set up a small fan blowing on the fan connection of the hybrid system & put a dehumidifier in there for at least 24 hours. Luckily everything worked & tested fine after that. Now when I get groceries..... No beverages go in hatchbook area unless in a cooler
You have to drive it almost daily, otherwise it discharge to a point the salt bridge is not crossable/main problem most of the time??
UnitedPebbles my daughter’s 2011 sat at the dealer for a month while they ordered a master cylinder. It was replaced for free, but they removed the inverter. Now they say the HV battery is bad. They gave me a report showing 9 blocks at 14.5+, one block at 12.7, and the rest 13.67 to 13.89.
When I gave it to them, the ice engine cycled off normally, now it runs continually. Any ideas?

Hey man your videos are great!!!!! I appreciate you taking the time to do this. As we not all are made of money and can just let toyota take an arm and leg lol. I have a 2006 prius it all started with a bad oxygen sensor turning my check engine light on i haven't fixed it till this day because I was told it wasn't that big of a deal. Well now all ths lights come on the triangle and the rest of the stuff. The scanner threw almost every code and then saying pack 5 needed replaced. Well I changed my 12v and that's not it. The car still drives though is the thing yes there is lost power at times and the battery fluxuates from low to full. My next step is checking the cooling fan. Any other suggestions? I just order the Bluetooth thing to do the torque app so I'm just waiting on that right now.
First step would to be getting that bluetooth adapter and torquepro (or another comparable scanner/reader) and reading the voltages in your battery blocks. If any of them are low and stick out like a sore thumb, great! That might be your problem. If not, I'd suggest clearing all the codes and seeing which ones come back immediately/quickly and going from there.

Hey man so my obd scanner came in. I got the pids for all the battery blocks and block 5 the one the code popped up for was like 1 volt lower than the rest but then after a while that one became slightly higher than the rest just by maybe .5 but the whole average sits at 16 to 17 volts all across the board. What do you suggest I do now. I also cleaned the cooling fan it was extremely dirty
@@samuelmunoz4868 What you do now is kind of up to you. I personally have replaced 1 module with some success, although eventually down the road the battery pack did throw another code.
If you're feeling adventurous I'd definitely recommend replacing 1 module and seeing what happens. The correct way to do it is to replace the 1 module and then power balance the pack, although I never had any of that power balancing equipment.
Block 5 sounds to be your problem block, and each block is made up of 2 modules, so I'm guessing only 1 module is a little on the weak side.

My prius is a 2nd gen which ended in 09, I believe yours is a 3rd gen, and I'm not too familiar with those, sorry.
I got 13.4 on battery, red triangle light comes on only if I drive the car long enuff for it to get hot then. The car turns off. I believe it's the water pump I had 2 codes first one was temperature sensor I replaced that. Other code was 2nd water pump .
I took the car to dealer ship with sensor I was lied to told by dealership that sensor was located inside the engine and that would be 2000 just to take engine apart get it to it. I told them that's not happening I went got my car from dealership, temperature sensor located under bumper on driver side took me 5 minutes to change out.

I'm curious: How old was the car when the battery failed?
It's a 2005 and the battery had failed by the time I bought it in March or April 2018. I messed around with replacing modules for a few months until I eventually just bought a brand new aftermarket battery a few months ago and it's been working great ever since.

The PID numbers? If you load the Prius PID package that comes prepackaged with TorquePro, you just add the list and then select the individual block voltage monitors
12 volt batt runs computer, door locks, entertainment, GPS, all lights, etc. so not so lame as author claimed.
Kind of sort of, all of those run on the 12v circuit, but once you start the car the DC/DC converter takes over and supplies 14v to the system. So you're right that all those devices run on the 12v circuit, but they only kind of sort of run off the actual 12v battery

We found a mobile hybrid battery replacement service for $1,300. Includes a warranty & is fantastic. We bought a 2007 & a 2013. Replaced battery on the 2007 so we have less than $5k into a car that gets about 55 mpg for my son. Battery in my 2013 is fine so far. We love gas mileage. The car drives better & more comfortable & more space than my 2000 BMW.
Yeah, having it professionally done can sometimes be the best route. The cost is more upfront but you get the peace of mind knowing that it was done correctly and should last you a decent bit of time

So just curious did the new cells do the trick?
I did replace the cells and it lasted about 10k miles or so. Tried replacing cells again and it just kept triggering CEL's even though all the cells had good voltage. I guess it was because I didn't power balance it.
I ended up getting an aftermarket battery pack and it's been trouble free for about 14k miles now at this point.
This the big appliance version of fixing a flashlight that won't light or lights dim. You find the bad cell(battery) and replace just it. Therefore you can fix an eight battery light replacing just one battery after finding the bad one. Regular 12v car batteries could be fixed if you could change individual dead cells.
Battery tech is sort of voodoo and black magic in practice, more than basic mechanics. Running batteries in series, sometimes a dead battery will at least conduct amperage/voltage of the other collective batteries in the string and sometimes it just cuts the circuit when a cell runs dry or the ion bridge clogs.
Changing your hybrid and EV battery packs individually will eventually be easier with diagnostic red/green lights on each pack. Removal maybe even without tools. You should be able to do it in five minutes at AutoZone. We're not there yet. It is still a niche prototype car.
Sometime my battery is one purple bar but not check engine light.
That could be a sign your hybrid battery is deteriorating.
Did the cell replacement work?
It's worked for about 15k miles, but I'm starting to get a few symptoms of a weakening Hybrid Battery, I'm guessing some of the other modules are starting to lose capacity.

I just went through all this with my 06 (148,000 miles). After you factor the expense of the balancing chargers and the time and risk of removal, disassembly and assembly of the pack, replacement of modules doesn’t make financial sense. Eventually, the old modules that are now at 7.6V will fail and you have to open the thing back up again!
Toyota has lowered the price of a new pack to $1950. These are new cells and don’t require balancing and charging. It does require changing out the contactors and ECU, but this is a lot faster than breaking out modules.

@@Stepclimb - not dangerous if you follow the proper steps to remove the safety plug and 12v ground. Not hard to pull and disassemble/assemble the pack, just be organized. Many aftermarket suppliers who will sell a new T-battery compromised of all NEW cells & bus plates for @ $1500. Stay away from "used good cell packs"...they just arent worth it. I also got the PROLONG charger/discharger/balancer system and use it once a month (48 hrs usually). I did not change my ECU and have no issues. Can you explain why I would want to change it? Thanks!
Hi, all my modules show charge of 16.2 to 16.4 on all cells---HV charge shows 60.0---HV SOC shows 57.6---HV Fan spd shows 6.0.
The red triangle is on---(!) is on VSC and check engine light is on.... What do you think is the issue.

@@stevej1280 i think he means bus bar, the module connectors that have a nut securing them to the bus bar. you can clean or replace the copper bus bars

Any update on your prius battery? Did you end up getting it to work? I also bought a gen 2 prius this year without even thinking about the potential battery issues in the future.
Still working 11k miles later. I've taken it on a 5k mile road trip and didn't worry too much about it failing.
Yeah, unfortunately even the newest 2nd gen prius batteries are almost a decade old now. But fortunately there are several online refurbishing companies that can sell you a "new" battery pack for a decent price.
Look at The Hybrid Store. It’s a franchise mechanics can get into. Recently bought out by a Japanese company specializing in hybrid maintenance and batteries. I talked to the owner of my local franchise (I have an 06 gen2 Prius 148k); he said the prices for replace and reconditioning (currently $1300 at the shop) is expected to go down with this new buyout and tech. Beats the heck out of $3500 at the dealership. Also, use Tier 1 fuel to keep your 3 catalytic converters clean (another dealership only repair, at least in California). Good luck. I love my gen2.
Relax, it's a great car with very few issues. Good gas mileage, great brake life, reliable engine...look at the battery as what it is, a wear item! Get the pack balanced every so often as your miles climb. Check PriusChat or UA-cam for info on how to use the cars built in diagnostics programs to occasionally monitor the Traction battery condition (as well as the 12v battrry). All this preventative stuff will hopefully keep your pack running strong for years to come. If and when it dies buy a new pack comprised of NEW (un-used) cells from aftermarket suppliers for around $1300-$1500. If you are handy check out "Chris Fix's" UA-cam video exchanging it yourself (it's not hard or dangerous if you are organized and follow two simple safety steps). If not take it to a high rated independent shop and they can install it for you in a couple hours. Now you're good to go another 150k-200k miles. It's about the same as any major repair on any other high mileage gas car. I know people who spent more on brakes! Have fun, the Prius is a fun worry free car to own.

@@scraplifetrashtocash4551 that is false. I have a 2007 Prius has 200k miles, never gave me any trouble at all. This is the first time my check engine light has come on and I am researching the p0300 code error. But overall great car.
Go with the basics first. Yes corrosion on terminals are part of aging.

My 2006 has a high volts codes and on live info all modules are 16.5 low and 16.9 running and all equal and reset code and about ten minutes of driving it light red triangle and all lights and may go into limp mode and you can stop restart and still red light and all other lights and fan and showing five module are high voltage but live they not any ideas Toyota wants to
Replace battery that’s all new 1 year ago and I have looked for water and see none Doorman battery pack 3200.00 one year ago so times dash board showed full green and sometime it’s one bar anyone have any idea what to look for Toyota said new battery by Toyota and brain box 5500.00 and I picked it back up because I know battery pack and starting battery are good has to be a board sensor are loose are bad control box any ideas it only has 122 thousand miles on it any info would be great
You find out if your battery is bad when you find out how old it is.
hopefully a high voltage battery balance is enough.
That's what I was hoping. If there's any difference in charge it would hopefully dissipate that excessive charge in heat in the higher modules and the lower modules would have a change to catch up.
toyotaprius79 my daughter’s 2011 Prius ice does not cycle off. When I left it at the dealer a month ago, they had to order a master cylinder, which they replaced for free. Before that, the ice cycled off normally. Now they say the HV battery is bad. They gave me a report showing 3 blocks at 12.7 to 13.89. The rest are around 14.8. Are these bad enough to condemn the HV battery?
I think my brother drove on the power mode a lot, and now the battery charges slow.

TheForistality sure did! I replaced 2 battery modules and it fixed the issue

I wouldn't exactly say like new, the other 24 modules are still the originals from 2005, but it runs pretty well now. So far I've put 11k miles on it and while I did have to take the HV battery back out to clean up the terminals, all the battery modules are still showing good voltages and seem to be in good shape.
CtrlAltDefeatTV nice what was your total out of pocket cost? I gotta get back there, open it up, and clean it pretty good. I hear that heat and dust is the major offender in draining hybrid batteries
