Hybrid Battery Reconditioning - Toyota Prius

  • This is a video of how I reconditioned a hybrid battery in a second generation 2004 - 2009 Toyota Prius. This can be done on any of the hybrid traction batteries. This was a learning experience but hopefully it will help anyone that is in the rebuilding or reconditioning process. 220 volt DC battery. Caution do not try this at home of if you are inexperienced. High Voltage can cause serious injury or even death.

    John, awesome video. I’m starting to get the CEL with hybrid battery related codes on my Escalade Hybrid. From what I’ve read the Toyota battery is the same. I just have 40 modules. Thank you sir, this is very helpful as I am going to begin my battery rebuild process. 👍🏼

    You did good as a DIY like me, by load testing the batteries. You cycled them individually on the charger and repositioned in arrangement for equal power strength.
    What you did may add up to two more years of use on the hybrid battery.

    All these hybrids using the PrimeEarth Panasonic Prismatic 7.2V modules in their packs are starting to age, people will be very interested in how to save the old battery modules especially since the value of a new Hybrid battery pack could easily exceed the cars value! An RC type charger that works well on these is the Turnigy Reaktor 1000W 30A unit. It will discharge at 6amp and charge at 2amp (OR HIGHER). It also data logs back to your laptop. Great way to check the overall health of each module and identify correctly the ones that need to be replaced. Problem is that to do this is very time consuming, if you have strong modules that are close the the 6500aMH original rating it could take

    Note: On the 2010 there is no temperature sensor on the bottom. I also find it easier to remove all the hold down nuts first of the hybrid modules when removing modules. The two opposite nylon hold down caps will keep the modules from falling out. Therefore remove the nylon hold down cap opposite the computer section this will then give you access to remove modules. So much easier.

    On my 07 Highlander I have a module reading 9.31V and the rest reading ~10.64V. I bought the Turnigy Quad 400W and noticed that it doesn’t discharge any faster than 0.4A even though I set it at 1.0A to 8.0V. Would it be safe to discharge to 1V per cell using a high amperage draw like a starter motor? If not what is the fastest and safe method to discharge each module?

      The cheap and easy solution is to put a 12 volt light, shop light is simplest having clamps already, and leave meter on it. Watch closely, draw it down to your lowest good cell. Once all same voltage, reinstall and pack is balanced.

    2. I set mine to recycle 5 times and out off at capacity of 7500. Now once it's start discharging and charging and it out off at 7500 I stop. Is this a bad idea?

On that app there’s always gonna show a low graph in one of the blocks but it’s just how the app is designed all u have to make sure is that the voltages are even .btw it’s way easier and fast when you take off the bottom pan of the battery this guy made it more complicated any more questions feel free to ask I’m a tech I’m feeling nice today.

    Interesting video John. I had to watch it a few times. You mentioned that you had to cycle the batteries about four times each. May I ask why? Does that mean you had to discharge & recharge each module four times? Also, after cycling the batteries, how can I check to make sure that the modules hold a steady charge? In other words, how do I prevent reinstalling/reusing a bad module?

    • @loungelizard836
      @loungelizard836 5 років тому +1

      If you put a resistive load of about one ohm and 10 watts power capacity across a module it will discharge at 7 Watts which would give you 7 amps discharge. You can time that and take the average between 6 and 7 amps. It would still take you a full hour to discharge a good module through 1 ohm power load. That's because it has 6.2 amp-hour capacity at about 7.2v average, so with 1 ohm load you have average 7 amps flow (7volts/1 ohm= 7 amps).

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb 5 років тому

      The cells that generally go first are near the middle of the pack. This is because that is the warmest place (being boxed in by all the other cells which are also warmer than the air flowing into the housing.) However random cell failures can happen anywhere in a pack. The chemistry changes over time and none of the cells degrade at the same rate.

    I am not surprised on how they sequentially count from right to left, Japanese books are read from back to front!! That is how they do it!!

    How many cells do you think I may need? Thanks

    • @JohnCalebWarren
      @JohnCalebWarren  3 роки тому

      I would recommend buying no less than 6, and just replace the weak cells. I believe I only ordered 3 or 4 & turned out I needed more once I had the battery apart

    Please answer my question if you can. I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 hybrid I want to change 2 modules. What modules do you recommend?. I hear some shops are using new generation modules. Can I use any module?

    • @JohnCalebWarren
      @JohnCalebWarren  4 роки тому +1

      If it's within the same model year it should work. I would recommend just purchasing the cheapest reconditioned battery on amazon with a warranty and installing it yourself

      John Caleb Warren thank you kindly for answering.
      I went to a shop and was told they would replace all my modules with new generation ones. I'm confused on that. Okay i already have the battery apart just trying to order the right one but I am confused to which battery I need. Can you explain a little more on the battery you were commenting about? Like do you mean I have to purchase a battery with my trucks year? Or how do I go about it? I was just gonna order one that looked similar but I was told that was not the right way to do it. Thanks

    Used this video, great stuff. I have an issue. Removed the Battery Pack and checked Voltage and all read on average 7.7 Per Battery and 15.4 per Group. There are no batteries that are far from the 7.70 with the low being 7.59 and the high being 7.77.
    I figure since I have it already on the bench I should Discharge and Charge. I only have two of the IMAX B6AC V2 units. The CAMRY has 34 Batteries.
    What is the value of doing the DIscharge to 6 Volts (1 Volt Per Cell) the Recharge? THis will take 2 hours for one Cylce.
    The number above is for one Discharge Recharge with top off twice only one cycle so is three cycles needed and/or what is the value of that?
    Saw instructions saying to go below 1 Volt per cell with .08 then .06 then .05, is this really of value?
    The Battery was on a Camry 2008 that I gave my son, it drove here no issue then gave VSC and Check Hybrid System. The Freeze data shows the packs fell from 15.4 on average to around 12 to 13 volts per pack. I think this is caused outside the pack, but now it is out want to get it redone.
    Any help or comments would be appreciated.

      Personally I would set a timer and discharge each cell (with a headlight bulb or dc motor) and see which ones discharge the fastest. The ones that discharge fastest will be the bad ones. You probably have one or two that will discharge extremely fast, replace those & equalize all the voltages. Wait a day and then top off each cells voltage so that it's perfectly equal before reinstallation. Any variance will throw the computer into failed mode.
      You can safely discharge them each down to 0.8 volts per cell

      Thanks for the timely reply. When doing deep discharge/charge and checking mAh for the batteries on the B2AC what settings do you use for Discharge / Charge. I have now 8 of these to complete the job and are discharging.
      I see Battery Reconditioning threads from many that do the packs and they go down to .8 then .6 then .5. If we go this route I mark changes in mAh between cycles.
      Again question is what should be discharge and charge voltage C Level, i used C=0.2 which is 1.3A. Lower or higher for NiMH Battery Panasonic 1.2V 6500mAh.

    On the matter of corrosion; why not use dielectric grease on all those bare connectors. Coat them all before assembly.

    • @YangSword9x

      Essentially don't charge higher than their rated voltage, & keep amp low enough not to cause high temp/boiling/evaporating battery electrolyte. Experiment & monitor for emergency stops/unplug.
      -copper wires, in parallel +/- ...
      -7.2volt spec= 7 volt car/RV/marine battery charger.

    Why are you using your chargers on NiMH settings with a lithium ion battery?

    • @JohnCalebWarren
      @JohnCalebWarren  5 років тому +1

      Because they are NOT lithium ion batteries. They ARE NiMH in the 1st, 2nd and & 3rd gen Prius.
      You must be thinking of the newer fourth-generation Prius, because 2015 & newer started using lithium batteries
