      That's funny.. Every other major car company will have multiple electric cars available in their lineup by the time they release this 4 cylinder engine. And with the disaster that was their rotary engine, buyers should stay away from the first gen..

      Posk Lamoureux Their rotary engine was less reliable due to being a rotary engine, and a first gen one at that. Much bigger difference than with skyactiv-x.

    The key is that with use of both super fast piezo injectots, variabile valve lift/timing plus with all bunch of sensors like cylinder pressure sen, oxygen sens in the exhaust, knock sensors you can control compression and combustion so precisely that you go up to the very edge where knock will occur. Meaning you are just a bit bellow knocking and spark just pushes you after the edge. A d when it does combustion occurs simultaniously all over the gas fuel mixture rather than with a fireball like on regular otto.

    Just a random question, but is this also achievable with E85 (I'm not sure, but gasoline is way more volatile than E85)? If not, than would it still be possible with a higher compression ratio? As far as I know, E85 also has a higher octane rating.

  • @james0six34
    @james0six34 6 років тому +5

    The small spark pushes the contents inside the combustion engine to a higher pressure and higher temperatures. As it exceeds the compression egnition threshold, all of the mixture undergoes spontaneous combustion. Of course all this is very fast.

    Trolls don't bother watching the video before criticising it? "Directly spray fuel into the compressed heated air" That IS exactly how a diesel engine works. The video shows diesel as SCCI not HCCI. That's why the fuel pressures are much higher. Probably what you are forgetting is the compression ratios are higher than normal in Skyactiv-X. Around 15-16:1 with low octane gasoline compared to 8-10:1. Diesel fuel takes alot of compression to "pop." Anyone running cheap gas in a boosted engine will tell you how easy it is to make 87 pop/ping/knock. It does use direct injection to get fuel in the chamber, and uses combustion to increase compression inside the cylinder. To the point of controlled knock. Its all about tuning and timing. A hint would be looking at how the piston shape makes a much smaller volume at the head vs gasoline.

    • @Dr_Oleg_Kulikov
      @Dr_Oleg_Kulikov 6 років тому +3

      It's a better explanation than the video. So, the Mazda is using volume detonation of a fuel/air mix after sharp pressure increase from a pre-ignition section of the combustion chamber with a spark. Well. In a diesel engine the fuel/air mix is not homogeneous and burning is slower. But would detonation instead of combustion be not harmful to the engine? I mean, shock waves from detonations that propagate also in metal parts of the engines instead of a more smooth pressure increase in a diesel engine or a benzene engine with Direct Injection. Not to mention complexity of the timing control. Shorter times for detonation may increase efficiency of the engine at very high rotation rate (at high cost of reduced operation times) but will be of no help at lower rates. Will such an engine be in operation as long as a diesel engine? I believe it will not. So, it is a shitty idea.

    • @GewelReal
      @GewelReal 6 років тому +2

      Oleg Kulikov at low revs it behaves like normal gasoline engine
      timing is nothing with todays electronics

      The idea may not be new, but actually mass producing such tech and implementing in such a wide way is action is and should be seen different from talk/speculation
      The automobile itself has been around since the over a century the late 1880's, but Henry Ford is credited with the making the modern car with the Model T because he took inspirations and brought them to market
      The opposed piston and axial engines are incredible designs better on paper then most we currently use, but they have pretty much stayed on paper hell you probably have never herd of them, and it won't until someone actually brings them to proper production we see the real benefits

    So it's like a Hemi head with a pyramid domed piston top? Giving a really good squeeze? I wonder what the compression ratio is? And does the spark plug fire after the squeeze ignition occurs?

    • @davidburke8087
      @davidburke8087 6 років тому +1

      from what i've heard the compression ratio is somewhere around 16:1. The spark plug causes a small combustion event at the top of the cylinder and the extra heat and pressure from that causes the rest of the fuel to combust. So no, the spark plug fires before the compression ignition.

  • @adrunktrexhavingaselfie6641
    @adrunktrexhavingaselfie6641 5 років тому

    I think this is similar to Nissan VC-T engine but without extra compression changing mechanisms parts weight. By tuning the spark size at the right time or angle and raising compression ratio to achieve something similar to compression ratio changing things. This is brilliant.

    F1 car had been using it since 2014 called the HCCI ( sfCI + HCsi ) to compensate with a tight fuel regulation resulting in increase of overall efficiency making it sitting around 40% of overall thermodynamic efficiency close to that comparable diesel engine thus significantly increase its power output for a given engine with a small displacement.

    I was under the impression that under normal low load circumstances the Skyactiv-X would operate on compression ignition (e.g. ignite air fuel mixture without a spark) but instead of diesel fuel uses gasoline. So diesel like operation but without the NOx or CO2 emissions of the latter. The spark plug would only activate during Cold starts, low ambient temperature and high power demand situations.

    In the divided combustion chamber approach:
    ua-cam.com/video/jgIDbHOosFE/v-deo.html
    there are two cooperating combustion chambers: a small auxiliary and a big main.
    A high compression ratio is used in the auxiliary combustion chamber.
    A moderate compression ratio is used in the main combustion chamber wherein a homogeneous air-fuel mixture is compressed / heated near, yet below, the auto-ignition threshold.
    The high compression ratio in the auxiliary combustion chamber causes the auto-ignition of the homogeneous lean air-fuel mixture therein (no spark plug required); the burnt gas bursts - through some "transfer ports", just before the TDC - into the main combustion chamber triggering its auto-ignition.
    The engine needs not be structurally stronger.

    Great idea pushing technology to it's limits but doubt if anyone will ever get a petrol-fueled engine to act like a diesel.

    Ok, so I initially thought this engine had two modes, diesel like (no spark) and petrol like. What I see here is just an upgrade of the spark plug, to create a small "fire ball", instead of a spark, given higher compression ratio. Interesting, but also not very revolutionary.

    For years, I knew that gasoline "fuel injected engines," were capable of operation without sparkplugs just like my diesel, just had an argument today, I look up just about everything else, don't know why I never looked it up before, See I'm correct once again!

    These comments are funny. All it takes is a google search to find out that this is a great step towards a longer future for ICE's. Any innovation is better than nothing. And this is the first generation of this engine. It can only get better.

    Not understanding something here. How is this a compression petrol engine when it still requires a spark? Am i missing something here?

    If car manufacturer were serious about the environment than they produce engine that would be used to charge generators that would charge small battery bank and capacitors and there would be electric motors in wheels. The most effective way to utilize Internal combustion engine is to generate electricity and use it to power the car. IC Engines can go up 30-40% in efficiency just by generate electricity...

      What they want is, a car that is both fuel-efficient AND fun to drive. Series-hybrid cars are NOT fun to drive. Remember mazda's slogan "Zoom-Zoom"

    SKYACTIV X is a great solution, but not new. More than forty years ago, the MAN company produced the high-compression "FM" engine with spark ignition. This engine worked with all fuels, including super-gasoline. The efficiency of the SKYACTIV X engine is similar to that of the diesel engine and is not better. The use of high pressure injection and the use of a PM filter suggests that the emission of pollutants (NOx and PM) is similar to that of a diesel engine. I think, to achieve higher efficiency Mazda can be achieved with a new solution: ua-cam.com/video/sknk3RrolSc/v-deo.html The emission of pollutants can also be reduced by injecting non-tiny fuel droplets but high-pressure superheated fuel, which will immediately become gaseous in the cylinder. (See the same.)
    Source book: Heinz Grohe "Otto- und Dieselmotoren. Kurz und bündig" / Vogel-verlag, Würzburg, 1973. Where „FM” engine: F=Fremdzündung (spark ignition) M=Mittenkugelbrennraum (central spherical combustion chamber).

    Ok so the compression ratio on the current mazda engines is high as hell it's like 15:1 or something crazy what's this going to be 25:1 that's why they need the supercharger and I believe it's twin turbocharged as well cause the engine makes no power on its own
