Please Note: The liquid is not solder it is flux. I applied solder to the tip off camera and that seems to cause a lot of confusion. iPod Repairs www.fixitplanet.com

damn. ill just remove that $9 battery out of my amazon cart now. great video btw just a bit more complicated then i thought
with little patient and not shaking hands it can be done by anyone
Not really. If you don't solder it right or forget to remove all the residue, it's a wrap. Best to take it to a pro
@@supermac8 If you never try things, you never learn things. I have an ipod 5 gen I was always scared to open, now I can change all components of many apple products without tutorials. js.
Smartest thing I ever did was watch this clip and know my limitations and pay a professional to do it. Me trying would have cost me a new devise as this is a much more precise operation than I thought with the right tools to make it possible. good work.
Exactly my thoughts haha. Now I’m thinking of sending it in to him
Fantastic. I have 2 iPods (5 & 6) that haven’t turned on since 2016 and 2018, respectively.
I tried replacing the battery in the 6 first, but I wasn’t careful and damaged the solder pads. This was my first time soldering and working on mobile device hardware, but I figured it was worth a try since the devices were dead anyways.
I used this video for the 5, and it worked! Luckily I had a semi charged battery so I realized that that charging port was damaged. After cleaning it with a toothpick, some alcohol, and bending the charging cable I was able to fully charge it. I already created a backup on iCloud just in case the device fails again and I backed up all data.
Lesson learned: Be careful and take your time.
Thank you for this video! Next up, my HTC One M7 and A9
For anyone else doing this, the hardest part isn't the soldering or opening and closing it...the hardest part is getting the home button to work again.
One of the best repair videos I have seen. Your voice is clear and distinct. Your demo was easy to follow. Thanks for the hard work!!
Thank you
He made the audio after the recording instead of talking while the repair which would cause him to mumble etc
First rate video. Clear viewing with great detail. A new battery is in the very near future for me! This video is very helpful
Thank you. You do make this look easier than it is for a first timer. I did a bit of cosmetic damage getting it open, but followed your guide and got the battery replaced without any drama. Thank you.
what made you know for sure it was the battery?
@@Vatationit’s obvious to know when it needs to be replaced, the battery doesn’t charge or stay charged.
Thanks for the video! My 5th gen is running like a champ again. One thing different about mine vs yours was the pink plastic framing inside yours. Mine is black, and it covered all the screws. I had to remove that frame to get access to them. That was an additional step of prying six (I think) more clips away from the edge of the case.
I liked your video...Just wanted to mention, there is a slight but unfortunately significant difference in the procedure between the 5th generation and the 6th. The most important first step I would mention is to verify the version of ipod that you have by checking the number on the back. You did this in your video casually, but I would reinforce this as a primary step. I purchased my ipod from a person who said it was a "5th generation ipod touch" well... it was actually a 6th generation and I found out too late unfortunately. I watched your wonderful video and purchased all the tools (heat gun, adhesive, soldering iron, solder, flux, tape, opening tool, etc.) and battery...then watched the video again 6 times to make sure I was comfortable with the procedure. I heated up the home button and gently attempted to lift the home button..but it popped off! It turns out the home button on the 6th generation looks almost identical except that you do not need to lift it up before removing the shield. If you attempt to do this (as I tried to) you will damage the home button to the point that you might as well drop your ipod touch into the trash. The home button on the 6th generation has micro-soldering connections hidden underneath and it's connected to the entire system components and a MAJOR repair. I wound up popping the home button off and completely ruining my ipod touch 6th generation thinking it was a 5th because that's what the person who sold it to me told me. Please recommend to others to "Check your version!" Dang. It's my bad but I REALLY wish that you had said something like, "First thing, check your version! There are some slight differences between the versions that can turn a success into a failure QUICK. Check your number and verify what version of ipod touch you actually have. Some poor pant-load didn't check and ruined his gear. You might think you know what version you have...but FIRST check!" Now if someone will just hold my hand.
Its been years since I've done any soldering, but otherwise very straightforward. I'll give it a go. Thanks for an excellent video!
Questions
1- how much does this cost shipping included?
2- what’s the turnaround time?
3- what’s the battery life like afterward? 4-Waranty and such?
I definitely need this work done so if I dint hear back from you I’ll look locally
My 5th Gen iPOD is over 5 years old. It charges to capacity in about 10 minutes and discharges in about 3 hours of streaming, (Pandora) use. I have a new Hakko station and silicon mat so I’m gonna give this a go. I’ve been doing iPhone batteries and screens but this will be my 1st iPOD. Appears straightforward. I have the tools, the desire and now this video to get it done! Many thanks and I’ll let ya know how it went.
So how did it go? I'm considering doing this for my son's iPod and I need to know if I have any chance at success.
Doug Wilson maybe some chance but the soldering parts are the most difficult parts one mistake can ruin the pins resulting the battery to no longer function...
Very helpful. Mine was easier because the glass was off/lifted when the battery went fat. WAY easier than I thought it would be. My iPod button didn't need lifting so seems the cover plate design changed, but getting the silver off the connector is tedious. Once clean It didn't need any cleaning maybe wipe with alcohol to remove stickiness. The worst part is reassembling those tiny screws. My advice is if are older to get a really good sharp magnetic screwdriver. The ones that came with the battery were useless. I appreciate the effort to record these, I cant do that, I always get into it and forget to record what I am doing. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, definitively worth it, $10 the battery and $15 flux is a bargain to change my inflated battery on this iPod touch. Now, why on earth did they soldered that bloody battery? If you have a rework station, no need for a heat gun to heat up the home button, use the rework station at 100°C to soften the glue.
Dear John. Thank you for making this video. I have successfully replaced the battery of my iPod touch 5..and did my first ever soldering (I totally had no idea what that is but got to learn from this video -I just wished you also explained and showed the materials you used 😅) after studying and watching this tutorial for like 20 times. 🥲
Great to hear! Thank you! Here is a general list of tools and materials. fixitplanet.com/tool-list
Congrats Marianne!!
Thanks sir for your video. I just replaced the battery of my itouch 5 this day June 16, 2022. I dont know how many years passed this device just in my drawer waiting to be alive again hahah. :D
Exceptionally well done. May even consider it enjoyable.
Thank you!
Long video but worth every minute.there's no way I'm getting this fix myself, guess I just going to dump the iPod since no one can fix it in Tbilisi
Great video, thanks, very helpfull, i spilt a mug of tea over my ipod and am praying a new batt fixes it, i have the old one out and am awaiting the replacement. Thanks.
Very well done , and soothing sounds to go with it ! Watched as I replaced with a few pauses. Thanks 🙏 Brother
Thank you
Thank you SO much! I was confused on the soldering part but I just tried following your steps. And my ipod turns on now! Before the apple icon would just flash and go away and it wouldn't turn on anymore (Only had the little guy for two years) Thanks again!!!!
That's great! Thank you
Wait, did it just go to the Apple logo then go black? And did it randomly reboot, freeze, get occasional screen lines before no longer turning on?
@@Sonicfan1661 mine does that occasionally. What does it mean?
@@alexanderstevenson6484 I wish I could give you a concrete answer, but all I can do is theorize. Has it ever been exposed to liquid? I believe mine has liquid damage, tho I haven't been able to get all the way into it to check. It could also be the battery needs replaced, or even just a corrupted operating system, which would likely require a factory reset/reinstall of the most current operating system it supports. Note that if you have any important data on the device you should back it up before resetting/reinstalling the OS, both locally on your own computer and on iCloud if you can do both, but just one should be good enough if you have the necessary storage space on either. I have yet to actually figure out what the problem is with mine, so I may not even have these problems in the first place, just my theories on what could be causing them.
Brilliant job mate thanks very much, so easy to understand great video 👍
Excellent! All I need now is the miniature soldering iron and some paste flux!
I'm good at soldering but looks like I need to invest in that flux and isoprop. Thanks for the excellent video!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, clear and easy to follow. Also Apple and their asinine designs irritate me. It would have made more sense to have the battery clip onto the board as opposed to soldering it, because that just makes repair for an inexperienced person that much harder.
For me the hardest part was opening the damn thing.
My husband says that he can take one size wrench and take apart his entire motor what is 89 chevy.. in my car it took him 7 sizes just to replace the bulb in headlight.. it's sad that part of there profit margins are making everything more difficult and break faster
Awesome video. And thank you for not having the background music blaring, or using notepad to type directions like some of them other clowns. Lol. Great!
Wow, good video. I had already ordered batteries for my two gen 5 ipod touches or I might have avoided trying to do this. I just finished my first battery replacement. I am not that good at soldering and I just have a cheat little iron, some flux & solder for electrical stuff. I just followed directions but mine did not go as well. Getting the thing apart was not easy and the edges got beat up a bit and I tore the plastic piece that goes around the edge a couple of times but was able to get it back together regardless. The black piece that goes over the solder area did not come off in one piece like his either but I managed to get it off with my soldering iron and the tweezers while my wife held the ipod in place so it would not keep wondering away from me. I put flux on each of the three solder joints and put the solder directly on the tip of my iron and then put the iron on each solder joint for a couple of seconds to get some solder placed on each. I lined up the new battery solder joints to the ipod and one at a time, held it in place and placed my iron on the joint for about 5 seconds and held the joint steady for 5 seconds without heat so the solder would dry. I tested for a normal boot before putting the whole thing back together and it worked! I had my doubts! If I can do this, you can too so give it a try. I have one more to do and hopefully it will go even better.
Thank you good job!
One of the best videos I've seen. Excellent work
Thank you!
I got my $25 mint ebay ipod and I'm ready to tacke this now. Thank you!
Fantastic!
Hi can you make more videos? They really helping me.
Please make one video samsung s7/s8 only glass repair.
NIce job, so clean!
Thank you! can you make a video about the same model but with flickering display.
best demo that I viewed.
Thank you
What is that long brown rectangle above where he removed the solder
Great tutorial. Thanks a lot!
Thank you
After watching this: Helllllllllll no! Not even going to try. I would end up killing it, soldiering all sorts of stuff together, cracking the glass.... a local place said $55, about 30 min. That's 1/4 the price of a new one!
gcuneo2 ...I’m with you... Hell no! I would do the same... I will just take it to someone who specialize in this stuff!
I messed up my I Pod Touch 4th gen years ago! It is not an easy task.Just bought an I Pod Touch 5th Gen and the battery seems to go down extremely fast. Not looking forward to taking it apart.
better than unscrewing 300 screws apple uses
Dude this is a great video, now I have to buy all the other parts just so I can change the battery.......I'm screwed. LOL😂😂😂😭😭😭
Thats very true, how many people out there own a heat gun.I already have the soldering iron and flux and the special screwdriver set leftover from replacing my Mac Book Air battery.
Great video!
My screen does not to be as sharp after I replaced the battery. Do you think I damaged either the screen or the ribbon cable?
If the adhesive is dried up at the home button, what can you use to replace it?
Hi what is the blue tool that was used?
this is a long shot since its been two years but do you think you can list the battery and tools you used and where you got them from???
Heat the bottom area well where button is, there are two large adhesive pads there. Also be careful on sides, edges when prying. If you too deep it will damage the LCD.
Excellent video - Thanks.
Many thanks!
I have replaced batteries on 3 different ipods that I own. Every time, the new battery gives me fluctuating charge readings and seems to drain rapidly even when the ipod is not used or is turned off. The fully charged battery will be dead in 24 hours. The 3 batteries I bought were from different battery manufactuers and different sellers. Am I that unlucky that all the batteries were bad?
where did you bought the battery from ?
Will this cause data loss or is my data safe when I do this, I actually lost my iPod touch for a while and I found it and it's still working but the battery life isn't the best
Thanks for this. Can I bother you or somebody here to put together a parts list for this procedure? So far I think I have:
-iPod 5th Gen battery
-screwdrivers and scraping tools
-heat gun
-soldering iron
-solder wire (size?)
-flux
-heat tape?
-ESD mat (optional?)
Am I missing anything?
Nice Job!
Thanks
thank i fix the ipod of my girlfriend son .. great tutorial and thumb up !
That's great thanks!
Very clear video. Thanks. What do you use for cleaning the excess flux? Alcohol?
Thank you. Yes 100% alcohol.
I would tackle this on my own but every time I solder something I burn through it or melt it.
I can't believe they solder the battery in. It's not like it saves any space over using a ribbon cable. Heck, even the new iPod Touch announced yesterday still has a 3.5mm jack.
That's because the 7th gen still more or less has the exact same design as the 2012 iPod touch 5th gen except for an internal spec bump. If the iPod touch ever made enough money to justify an actual redesign, you can bet that 3.5mm jack is the first thing to go
You got that right, for as much as you pay for these things, you'd think they would make it easier.Oh well Apple designed for self obsolesce.
My brother ipod battery is not keeping it charge i need few more tool then start fixing it i fix a teacher son iPad screen cracked and broke the monitor works just like new
At 8:20, you say "We're gonna put a little fresh solder on each of those pads." Then a tube appears and you appear to be applying flux. Then at 8:44 the soldering iron enters the picture and appears to simply plunge into the flux and make contact with each of the pads. Where exactly is the solder being applied, that you say is going to be applied at 8:20? I'm not seeing a wire of solder in use at any point.
Sorry for the confusion. The solder was added to the tip off camera right before plunging into the flux.
How much is does it cost to replace a ipod 5 gen battery?
Hello, one question: anybody knows if any type of tape can be used instead that yellow used here to cover the contacts after soldering the battery? Scotch tape would work or must be some specific? Thanks in advance!
Preferably electrical tape but any tape will do.
Would this be the same procedure to upgrade the Memory from the 16GB HD to the sdMicro? As far as I know, Nobody has attempted to do this, please let me know HOW?
No this procedure has nothing to do with memory upgrade.
I don't have a sodering thingy. It looks easy enough to change though.
Get a soldering thingy please!
how much the full price
WARNING! A very good video, but unfortunately, my traded in 5th gen seems to have had some additional anti-tampering measures added by Apple. Instead of having just the bottom rim glued, there turned out to have been a huge dollop on either side of the 'home' button, **on top** of the shield's screws.
This measure was obviously intentional, & designed to not allow the device to freely open on the top hinge. Wound up shattering the screen during the process, since the 'home' button was essentially glued to the shield.
Battery replacement worked, so I'm still able to use it as a managed device - just can't do anything w/ the screen or home buttons.
(PS mine wasn't an abnormality - I found another video at ua-cam.com/video/nAIitSWOzBg/v-deo.html which shows the guy having to use multiple guitar picks as shims while constantly using a heat gun to loosen the glue)
Why won’t my iPod touch 5 turn on, not even when I charge it? There’s no sign that is saying I’m charging it when I connect it to the charger, even if it’s a new charger.
Damn I already bought the battery too. Why’s it gotta be soldered. Ffs. Oof. Great video btw!
Thanks
Do the batteries have to be the same voltage when replacing them and or both discharged or fully charged?
It needs to be a compatible battery. They could have increased capacity. You should back up the iPod first if possible. Charged or not it doesn't matter just make sure you power off the iPod before performing the replacement.
Amazing
How much to do mine?
Not sure what "see-through-solder" these people are used to seeing that you had to update your description with the clarification that it was just flux!
😂
How much does something like this cost?
Hello John, my iPod went into bootloop mode ( apple logo turns on and off) when I plugged it in before finally assembling. What could it be? I did everything as you shown but it is my first time replacing battery in it. Thanks!
Hmmmm... idonno that is a good question. Sorry but there is no reason replacing the battery would cause this if everything was working to start with. However if the battery was bad it may cause something like this. It is really hard to say.
Thank you John, just as you said it happened to be the case of faulty battery. The one I ordered online from Chinese retailer Ali express did not hold any power. I finally got around finding the exact same brand Cameron Sino, this time around I measured it with voltmeter before installing - it showed 3,97 V - which is already good sign. I replaced my replacement and repeated the whole process. Although it still went into boot loop on my initial check prior to assembly, the IPod FINALLY came back to life when I closed it permanently and powered it with the battery alone.
Thanks again for your tutorial!
Buena suerte
For anyone that is wondering what he is referring to for the Kapton tape he mentions at around 10:25, here is basic info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapton
Well, I was right with you up to the point of "drawing up the solder" through the connectors. Unfortunately that didn't work, and I've overheated the battery cable to the point where it is black. Not sure what I did wrong!
There is a thin layer of plastic covering the pads. Did you remove that first? Did you tin the pads? Are you using flux? Clean up the area with some alcohol and try again.
@@FixItPlanet1 Yes, I took off the plastic, and tinned the pads. Also used flux. I ruined this battery, so I bought another one and will try again. Maybe my soldering iron was not hot enough?
ShadowAlmighty The solder should melt immediately when iron tip touches. It shouldn't take more than about 15 seconds to solder all three pads.
@@FixItPlanet1 OK, I bought a new battery, and new tips for the iron. I'll give it another shot this weekend. For some reason, even though I tinned the pads, the new connectors wouldn't stay down after I touched them with the iron. I WAS using a battery powered iron, and while it usually works, maybe it was too cool. I'll use a corded iron with the new tip, and let you know how it goes! Thanks so much for replying!
@@ShadowAlmighty Cool sounds like a plan. Hold down the connector while you solder. ;)
I had a 5th and 6th gen they both lasted about a year and a bit each they died and never came back on even after charging them. Do you think I need to replace the battery’s?
Sounds like it...
I'm very new to soldering, what kind of solder was that? I've never seen one look like a liquid.
The liquid is not solder it is flux. I applied solder to the tip off camera and that seems to cause a lot of confusion.
@@FixItPlanet1 oh ok, thanks
What was that clear liquid you used at about 4:40?
In this video we are using MG Chemicals No Clean Flux amzn.to/2GMmr9P but you can also use SRA amzn.to/2tHJ1Yt or Chipquik amzn.to/2EBmwe4 as well as other brands whichever you prefer.
What model soldering iron are you using?
Hakko FM-202
Sry for asking what that clear yellow tape called again?
Kapton tape
@@FixItPlanet1 What width Kapton tape is needed to cover the soldered connection?
What temp do you set the hot air station?
Between 750 to 800 Fahrenheit. but every station is slightly different. You have to experiment with what you have to see what works best for you. How far away from the component, how much air volume what size and type of nozzle etc. all have an impact on results.
what kind of solder pen u use ?
Hakko FM-2027 with a T15 tip amzn.to/2NSyhkE
What are all the materials I need to replace a battery here? It would help inexperienced people if you had listed them.
They are all listed here www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+Touch+5th+Generation+Battery+Replacement/108245
My old ipod touch doesnt boot up al the way only stays at apple logo so if I replace the battery I can still access my old data inside it ??
If the battery is at fault then yes.
Just one question, does replacing the battery affect the data and stuff that's on the ipod? My 5th gen ipod touch has a bunch of music/videos and pictures I wouldn't wanna lose but the battery in it is burnt out I think.
I have not had any data loss from replacing the battery. (However it is possible) You should always back up the device before performing any repairs. Just in case something unexpected happens.
@@FixItPlanet1 the device won't even turn on, so backing it up is impossible.
Well that sucks...
How could I do this without solder? Would glue work?
You can’t and no.
I have just bought a used one just like that. The battery runs down in about 30 minutes. It also charges back up in about 10 min. Is this a battery problem ?
Yes most likely
Mine is just like that too!!!
i see you applying the flux the connections, but the next thing i know your soldering. where did the solder come from?
The solder is added to the tip off camera. Sorry for the confusion.
What is the liquid your using called? Also where can you buy the liquid? Also what is that material you are using ? (material 8:06 of video)
Liquid is Flux and materials needed are flux, solder, soldering iron, de-soldering braid, and kapton tape.
Fix It Planet Is De-soldering braid a necessity? I don’t have any but I need to replace my battery
Fix It Planet are the flux and solder the same thing ?
Right? You never see any regular solder anywhere in the video.
Where did you get the battery at?
You can get one here amzn.to/2H2XdD3
What’s the name of the heat tool
Do you mean the soldering iron? I'm using a Hakko FM-202
At 4:40, you refer to "low-melt alloy . . . or leaded solder." Looking at one popular electronics retailer with dozens of solder types, I can't find any product called "low-melt alloy" and searching for "leaded solder" brings up mainly "lead-free" options. I do see something called "low-temperature solder paste" as well as various solders that list lead in the 30-60 percent range. Do you have some specific product names you'd recommend for this "lower melting point" procedure? I'm assuming, based on your answer to my earlier question, that you are putting this special solder on the tip of the iron off-camera and touching it to the factory-applied solder to melt it. Sorry--this is confusing to those of us who basically know only basic soldering procedure.
I am only using 0.05mm 60/40 solder by Multicore on my iron tip. Kester makes a good solder too. Here is some good Kester leaded solder for example amzn.to/2DDxEH9 And here is some cheap low melt alloy for example amzn.to/2DRkN55 Chip Quik makes a good low melt alloy but it's expensive and not required.

I've replace the power button ribbon cable on a 6th gen Nano so I think I'll be fine. It would just be nice if Apple hadn't soldered the damn battery in the first place.
I am not inclined to do this myself, but I need it done. Can I ship it to you to replace the battery? If so, what would the charge be please? Thanks.

How much did it cost you?
Pocket Productions. How much did what cost me? If you’re referring to the iPod it cost me just over $200.00. I have not had it repaired as of yet. I did call your number and spoke to a nice woman who quoted $80.00 to replace the battery. I’m conflicted. I’m not sure I want to spend nearly half the price of the original purchase for a battery.
@@chipmohan1534 Fix It Planet is not pocket productions. We don't know who they are.
my ipod turned bluescreen, then went off and would not turn on anymore. cud it be the batt is dead?
The Battery didn’t die, there are two possibilities, firstly, your hard drive on the IPod might have crashed. Secondly, you have fried the motherboard by use and the ram failed.
in that case any of the two would cost impractical repair, better buy a new one.
