"Okay you are gonna need a heat gun and a prying tool"
*gets blow dryer and credit card
That's some creative thinking right there!
And that works btw
By the time I got to 10.54 watching your video I found myself with two choices! Cut my wrists or throw my iPod out the window! Now I need to watch another video "how to replace a window"
5/7/19 😂 😂 😂 You made my morning. My pod is old and it wud NEVER survive this major surgery.
I always wish I had 4 hands when I solder something.
The most important thing I learned is not to even attempt this...
lol
why?
Chris Tilbury because taking it apart is one thing but using a soldering iron on something so small (I have fixed a few iPhones but once you have to solder to a small board you can very well ruin the board if you don’t know how to do it).
Oh ok
lol me to
Thanks for the video! When de-soldering you can use a little amount of fresh solder on the tip of the soldering iron and would help you to de-solder with much ease.
GUSTavo MYERS Good tip! I learned that after watching a couple soldering videos after I made the video.
This was a exceptionally well done video. Thank you for such precise direction.
I needed it to decide whether I would replace my battery or not. I will now, even though the soldering part is very touchy.
Thank you again.
Phil
I think its a great video where you actually show the problems you can encounter and how to overcome them
while replacing the battery.
Helpful guide, thanks. Helped me keep my ancient bit of 2010 technology going for a bit longer.
This is the best, most accurate tut I’ve watched so far. I’m attempting to do this... One guy goes bloop bloop bloop and the battery is desoldered. It took me forever🤦🏼♀️ Another guy had the display off in like 3 seconds...I spent over an hour🤦🏼♀️-he never mentioned ^glue^😥 just double sided tape....well obvs his opened right up! Mine is full of glue, like they weren’t having this thing open ever. I wound up cracking the screen in a couple spots. I’m still working on soldering the battery in. I’m not ordering a new screen until I’m sure the battery is gonna work. Ty for showing the legit probs of trying to fix these things! It’s more complicated than people think!
Great instructional video. My ipod battery has needed changing for ages. Now I know how it's replaced, I'm gonna fix it! Thanks for making this video. It's very helpful.
Worked great. Others were completely removing the screen. Only thing is I got white screen after replacement and had to hold power home and vol up for a bit mild panic but did the trick. Haven't soldered in years good advice on bottom of the tabs solder.
Put the battery ribbon cable under the board before you put the solder beads on and you'll make your life easier.
heating a piece, even to remove the solder on a component still requires the iron to have a bead of it on the tip. This works like hot mercury, molding to form and transferring heat to the ribbon. That's why you had such trouble achieving temp. it wasn't transferring. A blunt tip might remedy this.
+Drew Gormley Thanks!
bro i just replaced the screen, no way in hell im opening that shithole back up and soldering it, this video was also uploaded on my birthday lets go
very nice of you to take the time to explain this.thank you very much
Thanks so much bro! You pretty much covered all the steps, so we have a lesser chance to damaged this iPod touch 4th gen.
can you tell me whats the cost to have it done lol
OK; I just went through this exercise of replacing the battery. The issue is: trying to unsolder the battery as is won't work, as the contacts are covered with silicone, which is not heat conduction; hence, the difficulty to get it off. Solution; use a sharp object, like a cutter, and scrape the silicon off. Add a bit of solder to each point, and then heat one point and pull slightly until off, and repeat with the other two. Since I did not want to open a new cartridge of silicon, I opted ti use a piece of insulating tape and put a patch of 5 by 20 millimetres over these three solder points. -- Also, add solder to the three battery contacts AFTER routing it under the circuit board. Way easier to fiddle it through. :)
Hello, one question. I lost my display sigt for half. Did i damage the screen then? Cable is good in place?
I put 3 points in de mirror half when losening both sides.
Can you elaborate on the solder wire you're using (or that you recommend)?
I wish I watch this before I damaged my iPod. This is the best video I ever watch over UA-cam on the similar subject. Great work and I am sure it has and will benefit many ones who want try this for fun and $.
David Chen
Great video. I did this replacement twice because the first battery was deeply discharged. However the second was also deeply discharged.
I have changed the battery as you said. Then I followed all the steps but the battery was just hanging in an endless time of charging.
I think it has to do with the age of them. After all the batteries for the ipod touch 4g are over a decade old.
Hi, Great Video. What wattage soldering iron can you use? Can I use match solder as it does not need to get as hot? My batt only lasts 45 minutes, how long should it last? Thanks, Mike
For the iPod touch 4gen i want to fix, there is a dent in on the top left corner of the iPod, how would I be able to fix it and get it back to its proper form? Would it be with the heat gun or something?
Thanks for the guide! It really helped.
Everything was doing great but when I tried to turn it on. It didn't. I thought the new battery was bad so I
put the old one back. Nothing. I looked at the board and it seems at 5:20, I put my tool a little bit too far and broke 2 capacitors/resistors. It sucks. I really thought I could do it. I could try to replace them but it's way too tiny to attempt that.
Besides, I didn't back up my stuff lol
That sucks hella. :-(
Well done, the first time it's usually the tricky one, I'm trying this as soon the replacement battery arrives, no way I'm paying Apple 100 € to do this (replacement only cost 12 €). Thanks!
does a black spot in the upper right screen indicate battery needs change???... is there any company you recommend for doing the battery change service???.... what is a fair price to replace a battery???
Lol. Cracked my screen when trying to pry it off. Was being gentle as well, But it seemed the tension was too much.
Put battery cable through then solder then bend over in place and solder to board
This was really helpful!! I'm waiting to receive my battery so I can have it changed as well. It still works, but the battery goes low within minutes of a full charge. Thanks for the video. Oh, and you have great hands btw. ;-)
RicanLunaP Glad you like it.
@@How2Tech do you do battery replacement?, I have everything, and Ive watched your video 10 times, I'm gun shy to even try
Omg. I was dumb and tried to open my iPod to see what was inside and broke the LCD. While trying to fix the LCD I managed to rip the battery ribbon cable too but luckily the contacts are fine
I've Apple I pod 4 32 gb and it has problem of battery as well as charging base so how I can repair solve both problems...???
what is the watt of the soldering iron?
I have an ipod 4, is possible to increase the storage? Because is the 8Gb
very good thanks
Hello :) I think the cable between the battery and the rest of the iPod is unplugged (i can hear a sound when i shake it) I know how to open it and where is the battery cable but i have no soldering iron :/ what can I do ?
My home button doesn't feel right after replacing the battery. Any suggestions?
nice vid,, i would use a but of flux to make the removal process a lot easier
U are so smart, I got a iPod 4th gen, 6 years old, battery only last few minutes now.
did you go for a battery change ?
no, not worth to change, I got iphone 7 plus, iphone 4s, iphone SE......ipad mini 3...... so the ipod 4th gen is powered off and stay in the drawer......
ah ok haha

What happens if you damage the copper film ?
tnks bro.
Sadder sodder sodder what is this Sodder do you by any chance mean solder. Re adeve another good one
Never press out the LED screen with metal tool
good video my friend, very detailed, you have lots of pacience to explain the whole process. the battery on mine is still good, how long do they last? Also I would like to know, (if possible) can you make a video on how to deleate pics from an albun? I have been abke to deleate the ones on the camara stream but not on the albuns. I an kind of old school, maybe you could give me some light on how to do it. thanks !
You should work your spelling first
Look, we have a wise guy here! It is called a typo jerk...
Simon Meili
Was there any adhesive between the battery and the copper shield?
I believe there was but the copper is pretty thick. If you take your time you should have no problem.
Should I heat at all prior to lifting battery up? Thank you.
I did not and as long as you pry it up slowly you should be able to do it without heat.
I notice that you have two different batteries: an APN 616-0553 (the new one) and the old one is an APN 616-0552; On the battery the polarity indication is reversed. I have the same situation - Are the pinouts on these two batteries identical despite the markings? Tnx.
Answer to my own question: No problem, it works. The edges (display) of the LCD screen are a little mucked up where I probably damaged them, but otherwise, it works. I will agree with everyone else - this is a bear of a repair, fraught with potential pitfalls. Unless your ipod a very dear keepsake, maybe you should get a new one.
i accidentally pulled the black ribbon on the top what do i do?
How much would you charge to replace a battery on an iPod Touch 4th Generation?
thamks broo♥️♥️♥️
I watched a number of videos over and over thinking I had this procedure down pat. And this one seemed to make it simpler without removing the LCD screen, cables and parts for the front-facing camera, etc. In THIS video from 2:40 to 3:07 there's mention of the WiFI cable and the LCD cable attached to the motherboard. All good. But at 6:16 the battery cover is removed and just lifted off -- only problem is that on MY iPod Touch 4th gen there was a copper cable attaching the battery cover to a small square sheet of copper on the rear-facing camera, located at the top left corner in the video -- but it doesn't show in this video. It easily snapped in two when I took off the battery cover. Dang!! :-( I continued the battery replacement and put everything back together, then turned it on. The screen is now a MESS!! A total disaster. I can see everything that should be there "under" what appears to be damage to the screen electronics from the heat gun when I softened the adhesive around the edges. I guess the screen is EXTREMELY susceptible to damage to "too much heat." Had that been emphasized, I think I would have been more cautious in applying heat to the face. I thought I was being careful.
The battery replacement only cost me $7.00 on Amazon. But now I'm wondering -- do I order a new screen for something like $13.00, send the whole unit in for repair to a special shop (for ~$30), or just chuck the whole thing and purchase a NEW 5th gen unit that's faster and holds more songs and apps? Apple had refused to do the repair, along with two other local fix-it shops in my area (they said it wasn't worth their time to do this type of work anymore). Looks like Apple designs these things so when the battery goes bad, they INTEND it to get thrown away!!!! Sad for us, more money in Apple's pocket.
It was an interesting "learning" experience -- maybe I should have just let someone else do the work. Crud...
When I tried to solder it, it was not sticking at all.
put a little solder on your iron to create a heat bridge ......
Very nicely made video. However, when I was prying up the metal cover at the corner, I inadvertently got my pry tool underneath a plastic part that had a black and red wire and the plastic part remained attached to the metal cover (where the pry tool is at 6:08 in the video). The black and red wire broke and there is no way to fix it. Too bad the video didn't caution about this. No worries. Live and learn. Also, my metal cover has a copper strip that broke when I removed the metal cover. It is connected to somewhere under the green pc board, so I don't know how this could have been avoided.
Update. I discovered that the part with the black and red wires that I accidentally pulled out is just the speaker. I use my iPod with headphones all the time anyways, so no big deal. Since it was just the speaker i went ahead and replaced the battery (which was pretty simple, btw). Anyway, iPod works fine now.
One more thing I accidentally scratched the inside while prying the screen lose you can see it when reassembled. To fix I just touched it up with some black nail polish. You can't see the scuffs anymore from the outside.
Glad it helped! Sharpie works good for scratches also.
What is the price of battery now
bricked mine. cracked my screen right off when I tried to remove by getting under the bezel. Then broke some connectors (mic and volume) too in the process. Basically I wish I had not even attempted it, and I have been pretty good at repairing phones and other items, but these are very tight and easy to damage during the repair. I wouldn't do it again.
How long does these batteries last?? I have been using em for almost 4 years and I charge my ipod on an old computer heatsink :3
Hazim Reitz xD
Using solder wick will take the solder off 100% and very easy. Just not too cheap.
Hi, nice video and good details.
Try some masking tape to hold down the item you are working on if you don't have access to a Panavise or similar device.
Where did you get your tools from?
Ladyla Laugh Lullalove a combination of places...Ifixit, amazon, ebay, harbor freight.
would this method work to remove a battery from one iPod and then move it to the other?
+Nick Thomas well I mean like since you cut that could I then use that battery in another iPod if I also cut that one?
+Nick Thomas no you can't if you cut it...try to remove it without cutting it
flux and solder wick helps to remove it better
They have such idiotic design so you need to pay them just to replace a new battery.
its not even worth it to do this anymore you can buy a used one for hella cheap like 20 bucks the new battery is like half that lol
@@fabioa561 ...lol?
hello,
I've accidentaly broken the mothboard of my iPod touch while unwelding the battery.
The middle connection of the battery is broken and I'm not able to weld it back.
Anyone know where I can try to reconnect it
Thanks
Luc Siassxfghkbille
I to
Hi , did you ever fix it ? Im having the exact same problem right now and idk how to fix it lol
is this even worth doing anymore? I guess only to say "I did it" lol
mmm.. you do know that those battery contacts should not be bridged with a metal object?
I accidentally deleted someones comment about the solder and iron that I used.
It was a non-temp controlled 40 watt iron with, solder was either .020 or .032 I would probably go with .020.
+How2Tech Thanks for the video & letting us sit in on your learning curve, I'll soon be attempting this myself. It seems that if you put the battery ribbon under the motherboard before priming it w/solder it would work better since it seems to be such a tight fit. Also that LCD looked quite smudged on the sealed side, perhaps a little cleaning before closing it up.
What an idiot not even using a solder sucker or De-soldering braid
iPod quattro
How2Tech Try tinning your iron next time. The end of your iron is black and tinning it with solder increases heat transfer
Ты попробуй заняться балетом. Это тоже будет увлекательно.
bought a used ipod touch 6th gen knowing that the battery doesn't last more that 8 min. The problem is I don't know if it's the battery the problem or the ipod. (I haven't fixed it yet). I noticed that the problematic battery charges in 10 minutes and in 8 min it's gone. But could it be the ipod's problem??? For a moment as I was using it the battery from wery low became medium loaded
Mine does the same thing. It’s still running iOS5. I think it’s just the age of the battery. Definitely needs a new one
i need help i opened up my ipod and i saw this square thing that said Li-Ion on it and it said flammable so i took it out and got rid of it cause its flammable and i put my ipod back together and now it wont turn on help me
You just threw away your iPods battery...
+Arnor Erlendsson troll
use damp cloth on table to stop ipod from moving
When I plug my charger in it comes up with the apple sign but then it has that plug your charger in sign when I already have can anyone help me
Did you ever figure it out?
what a complete pain in the ass. everything was glued together. took forever to get this thing apart. there was two things glued to the top of the screen, one was for the wifi and something on the other side that i ripped. i call bs on that was his first time. it looked way to easy. at least its back together and working. this was my first and last ipod touch battery change.
That was probably his first time with an iPod touch 4 but not his first time with an iPod/phone
clean your sodder tip on fine steel wool prior to using it.
Was going to do this but then I saw that it looked like a major pain. Thank for vid though
I did it and mine is now bricked!
I Purchased this Ipod about 1 year ago.
I never got a Chance to use it.
Now the freaking battery don't work.
This is so Crazy we have to go through all
this just to put another battery in.
This was a waste of $240
mpravo re maga
I never change my battery because I love my battery because the battery can charge itself without using a cable to charge
dang, nice vid.. but I'm not gonna do this... I see now, that's how apple gets you. make it so complicated to do on your own. looks like I'm just gonna buy myself a new ipod. I should prob get the new one by now anyway...
My Ipod came on, displayed the white apple on the black screen for just a second, and then blinked off. After this, i tried to plug it in to a charger, i could hear the sound it plays when you plug it in, but there was still no picture.
I have faced same situation. How can i solve this?
Your video cable that he shows re-connecting close to the end may not be seated correctly it is tricky
Newest Apple products are so much easier to works on. This right here, is ridiculous, i’d rather buy an external battery pack lol.
This video missed accidentally tearing the copper tape from the metal plate to the camera. Not sure if it matters. Another video spotted this. Now to get my home button working again.... It doesn't click. Oh a tiny little plastic shim has vanished. I need to make a replacement :-(
Sodder?
@eliza montes It will not affect apps or pictures.
Hi Cory can you contact me about my RCA tablet glass replacement
The last part is the trickiest, getting that screen *$&*#)# connector in place. Otherwise your screen stays black or in my case, white. Patience.... patience..... GNNNNN
well. i will try this now, cant do either since my ipod will not even boot now, battery its nearly 100% dead. i wish good luck to myself lol
And works the iPod ?
I used this and the same screw didn’t want to come out
Solo nervoso e senza parole...
I have done this successful many times following this exact method.....Rather than come here and talk about how you can do it better post a video and be helpful rather than troll around UA-cam just talking.
ive had the same ipod touch 4g for almost 6 years now. I have never had any issues with the battery
OMG this was the biggest pain ever, i scremed so much because the freaking glue was soooooooo much, it was sooooo freaking sticky, piece of shit, all they had to do what make it a small clip in switch, BUT NOOOOOOO!!!!! lets make it SOLDER!!!!!! stupid douchebag apple,
I have a problem, my ipod wont charge after replacing the battery? should i go back and resolder? thanks
p.s. I had to use a hairdryer to melt the glue and that just barely helped,****ing apple
Can anyone tell me the price of iPod's battery?
Rayan Fahim like 7 $
I fucked up bad the battery strip from my old iPod broke and basically melted to the iPod now it’s completely fucked
Cory, do you or someone you trust do this for me - I'll pay gladly (don' have all my fingers).
Carl
Hi
Oh!!!!! and ALWAYS use flux on your solder ALWAYS
Why couldn't they have made battery replacement for these iPods as easy as the old phones used to be...just slide off the back cover flip out the battery and lay the new one down and snap into place ! Thank God I won this $400. 32 GB 4th Gen iPod years ago in a contest because I would be pissed that I spent that much money and even though it still works the charge won't last a day even if I shut it off!
because these ripoff merchants want you to buy another one of there products,am amazed that this company has not gone bust, just goes to show the amount of people that are prepared to pay for a product that when goes faulty they are prepared to just throw away cos repair cost outway gettting it fixed unless you can do it yourself which in most cases is no
I still don’t understand how the WiFi signal passed through stainless steel.
wow, this is harder to repair than the modern iphones lmfao
16:12 face reveal ehhh
Apple lied to me. They told me that can replace 4th gen iPod touches. Mine needs a new battery. It won’t stay on unless it’s plugged in.
