Incredible insights in this video! Looked to the comments earlier and saw people talking about underrated channels, looked up, and now I’m wondering how you don’t have more subscribers?! Thank you for introducing us to Mr. Bones’s soundtrack. The music rocks! (No pun intended)
man this channel is pretty underrated, i love the soft casual convo vibe it reminds me of that other channel hazel where she talks about anime and older games. good stuff!!
you specifically clarified unpolished does not refer to a lack of quality but most of every non iconic game youve introduced youve offhandedly labeled as sucking
I’m not sure how to describe what you mean either, but I definitely get it. This one game, James Noir’s Hollywood Crimes 3D for the 3DS kind of reminds me of that feeling (nobody really wanted it, wacky FMVs, a banger soundtrack, weirdly unfinished-feeling aspects, made by UBISOFT of all people). Uh go check that out if you liked these lol
Speaking of 3DS, Turtle Tale is this one game that we joked around with friends but I ended up becoming really fond of it, it's a simple 2D platformer but I've never heard anyone talk about it, it was also like 2-3 bucks before being removed from the eShop (i think) It's really nothing special and it even looks like shovelware at first, but it's fun once you get into it, it does exactly what it needs to do, nothing more, nothing else, and I think that's what appeals to me, it just works. I've wondered what other people would think of it but it really is an obscure game lmao
It was a really big surprise to see joshw mentioned in the Mr. Bones section. I was actually the one who made the rip that's currently up on there. (It had to be redone in a lossless format because the existing rip had the songs converted into mp3s due to the space restrictions that were in place at the time.) I didn't really know anything about ripping Saturn songs (and I still don't), so I was only able to do rerips of the redbook audio tracks. I was also really disappointed that Underwater Ride wasn't one of them. (Also, while watching, I remembered that Flower Sun and Rain was one of the games published by Victor Interactive, so it caught me completely off guard when it popped up immediately after.)
if you ever make a second one, you just HAVE to play Cruelty Squad for it, it is peak unpolished game. also, you cooked hard bro, you absolutely need more subs
Hey fantastic video. Cant wait too see you do more topics and develop your voice. I did notice the repeared songs that Hazel uses and whether or not youre just a fan or BFFs it does force me to stop thinking about your thesis and focus on your similarities to other works. Do I actually agree youre pointing out something unsettling or did you just use spooky music from Yume Nikki that Hazel does and my brain is just filling in those gaps? Not saying you cant use any songs that another youtuber does, but if im watching your essay I want to watch *your* essay. Again, your editing and composition is great and I like what you had to say about friction showing more of the real people behind a game than the seamless, more polished parts. Good luck and take care.
Your discussion of Neverhood being a claymation game just to mess with you reminded me of the game Hylics. Like the fact that Hylics has a mechanic devoted to the number of times you die and get a game over is so weird and throws traditional game design on its head.
A series that lives rent-free in my mind is the Mia edutainment series from Kutoka Interactive. Those games could barely run on my family’s 2000s-era laptop, and when it did run properly Mia would never know how to get to where you wanted her to go, but the crusty graphics, animations, funky background tunes and intriguing voices always stuck with me to this day.
Literally nothing will recreate the feeling of being a child with entirely too much reign over the internet in 2011, discovering this quirky indie game called "Minecraft", and investing the next several years of your life into learning how the game works exclusively through word-of-mouth. I get emotional any time I think about it.
This video perfectly captures why i love the ps2 era of games so much idk theres just something about them that feels so special. Like Dark cloud 1 is kinda bad, by all logic its way worse than its sequel but I just love it so much. It does have a story but its so spaced out between dungeons that it doesnt super matter its pretty much a dungeon crawler with each floor being procedrually generated. And so some reason they added not just weapon durability but a thirst meter?? its so bad yet its peak what can I say. Justice to older games that just kinda suck at least a little bit. Also there was a team of NiGHTS fans that made a software for ripping the saturns images files so if anyone would know anything about making a software for ripping saturn music it would prob be them.
There are several really good claymation and claymation-adjacent game designers working right now, including Jeremy Coulliard, the upcoming Elation for the Wonder Box 6000, Hylics and Hylics 2, Harolld Halibut, and from 10 years ago Dominique Pamplemousse.

UA-cam always showing random good content from underrated channels from time to time instead of popular channels I don't have any interest. Typical UA-cam algorithm ☕.
Yeah I've noticed that the algorithm has slightly changed over these last months and now recommends recent videos from channels with few subs so that's cool
I think pikmin 1 has the same vibes as some of these games. It contrasts a lot with the later games that go for realism. I think forest navel shows this the best. Apparently its supposed to be a cave? It has cliffs that lead to endless darkness. There's two really weird bosses. One jump scares you and shakes it's knees at you one of them mind controls your pikmin. Bread bug is there as the only roaming enemy. There's also just a lot of weird design choices, like why does olimar look like that in his health bar or what are the gates supposed to be, they look like they are made from packing peanuts. I think it's also a game filled with mystery. There's a bunch of enemies you could miss seeing in a playthrough, there's rumours like beady long legs escaping it's arena. There's beta footage in the game with completely different enemy placements. It basically has it all
I feel like pikmin 2 also has a lot of this too, especially in the caves and with the odd juxtaposition of real world items everywhere. Certainly more polished and tutorial exposition heavy, but still weird and vibey to sit with
Yeah it's a lot less polished and more surreal. If you play it on real hardware like I do (gamecube) the darker and lower brightness output makes it kinda unsettling actually. The distant spring is full of Bulbears that could annihilate your entire squad in seconds, and they have these weird pulsing spots that never came back again. And yeah, the enemy reel during the credits is full of oddities. I'm honestly kinda sad they rerecorded it for the switch release to fix it.
Pikmin 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. The atmosphere is simply unmatched I don't think a game like Pikmin 2 will ever be made again by Nintendo, the difficulty is just so unhinged that it makes you wonder how this is coming from Nintendo but it's oddly so engaging It's not so hard it's impossible and unfun, it's just...surprising, and I love it for that No other Pikmin does it as well as the first two for me, especially 4, I hate that they basically did a full timeline retcon with 4 if they're continuing with its plot instead of the subtle world that was being built throughout the first two games
I hope Pikmin 4 is just a side story, the Oatchi species could easily relegate Pikmin 4’s world to a sideplot in another universe while Pikmin 1-3 are the main stuff.
Enjoying the video! But if I can offer a bit of critique? Any time you're gushing about how cool some super jank game is, I'm having a great time. But you lead into each one by putting out a little disclaimer about how bad it is. It feels like a preemptive defense, like you're afraid someone will scorn you for finding something worthwhile in a weird game. I think just letting your joy flow uninhibited would make for a cleaner script and a better viewing experience.
I definitely feel like this had a bit of that sadly ubiquitous aversion to true sincerity, the whole post irony thing. His enjoyment of these games model had to be framed at least as slightly ironic, lest he be deemed “cringe” (which is a death sentence in this environment). We already know from the premise of the video that the games are flawed, it’s okay to enjoy them anyway. :)
I'm surprised you didn't go over early ROBLOX, early ROBLOX has objectively one of the most unintentionally weird atmospheres it had super sharp high quality lighting and low quality textures mixed with random stolen sound effects and obscure music and remixes and it had probably one of the worst physics engines made by any company in the past 20 years.
I actually thought about talking about roblox! There were a whole bunch of weird tycoons and obbys that I used to play that had a really janky vibe despite being from a while after the game launched that I would have liked to have a section on. If I ever make a follow up to this video I’ll be sure to talk about it!
deadly premonition is one of my favorite unpolished games, and the fact they made a sequel that was even more unpolished 10+ years later will forever be the funniest shit to me
on the topic of claymation being pretty rare, mason lindroth (hylics) is probably my favorite claymation animator. love the way he plays with claymation not just as a medium, but brings attention to the clay as a material through animation but also the writing and "lore" of hylics. its a game thats in a weird way about clay
This is the reason why I abruptly stopped playing new horizons randomly one day about a month after release. I thought it was stupid how I was using my free time basically doing digital chores to pay off a digital loan. No hate for people who like these kinds of games but I get no joy out of decorating which is the large majority of the game’s appeal. Without that it’s just an adulting simulator with a cutesy aesthetic.
It also made me realize that "Haunt Muskie" _is_ an anagram of "Hatsune Miku". But then again, I shouldn't be surprised that the creator of Minecraft is featured in the soundtrack.
I love recognising a fellow viewer of Hazel through the music choices - also holy HELL this was so good! Super well made, super interesting, I think I could listen to you talk for ages!

Ah yes mr.bones wild ride from the vargskelethor stream
love the content
The Sega Saturn only was good in Japan, it even outsold the Nintendo 64 there. The good games for that console never left that country.
PLEASE UPLOAD MR. BONES 💀 MUSIC 🎶 TO UA-cam EVER IF YOU JUST HAVE TO RECORD THE TV 📺
yume nikki sound effects and ost? ok yeah im subbing

exceptional video

if only i had some way of tricking my computer into thinking im in a different country.....well anyway! :]
very very gud video man 👍
This video is amazing, however I *can* believe you only have 2k subscribers, because quality work is not necessarily rewarded with popularity.
i swear every song in this video i have heard in hazel videos lmao
the vpn fakeout. I had to pause to cackle. You're a bastard, I love you immediately.
It was funny but I’m surprised to see people “falling for” it. if he put a real ad read *that deep* into the video the hypothetical router company would have him skinned
Mr bones genuinely one of the most slick talkers in any game, we have yet to recapture the bones rizz
Of course boneyzoney9551 would like Mr Bones
@@Self-Referential you will be dust.
@@Boney9551 won't we all? 😔
Metal Fatigue was an interesting game. Excellent music in there as well.
I love Mr. Bones, I wish skeletons were real
I loved the fake ad break lead in during the neverhood section
I instinctively skipped and then I went back confused
genius
made me want to sub a second time
UA-cam always showing random good content from underrated channels from time to time instead of popular channels I don't have any interest. Typical UA-cam algorithm ☕.
Yeah I've noticed that the algorithm has slightly changed over these last months and now recommends recent videos from channels with few subs so that's cool
yea lol. its really nice
Rare youtube W, it feels like
@@FabbrizioPlays Only UA-cam W as far as I can tell
Must’ve been because the CEO has been absent from UA-cam since a long while. Too soon? Yeah. But it’s true tho.
I love how you say "his mission is admirable" about Banana's quest to... gather fruit and find his daughter-in-law
The atmosphere is simply unmatched
I don't think a game like Pikmin 2 will ever be made again by Nintendo, the difficulty is just so unhinged that it makes you wonder how this is coming from Nintendo but it's oddly so engaging
It's not so hard it's impossible and unfun, it's just...surprising, and I love it for that
No other Pikmin does it as well as the first two for me, especially 4, I hate that they basically did a full timeline retcon with 4 if they're continuing with its plot instead of the subtle world that was being built throughout the first two games
I hope Pikmin 4 is just a side story, the Oatchi species could easily relegate Pikmin 4’s world to a sideplot in another universe while Pikmin 1-3 are the main stuff.
i love pikmin 1s olimar icon that looks like he's an irradiated gnome
Enjoying the video! But if I can offer a bit of critique? Any time you're gushing about how cool some super jank game is, I'm having a great time. But you lead into each one by putting out a little disclaimer about how bad it is. It feels like a preemptive defense, like you're afraid someone will scorn you for finding something worthwhile in a weird game. I think just letting your joy flow uninhibited would make for a cleaner script and a better viewing experience.
I agree! Love and fun is awesome!!
@@milesofkilometerss please make a follow up
@@milesofkilometerssI'd recommend checking out Super Nostalgia Zone! It's a place that basically aims to emulate classic roblox.
Now the ROBLOX atmosphere is kind of... sanitized?
deadly premonition is one of my favorite unpolished games, and the fact they made a sequel that was even more unpolished 10+ years later will forever be the funniest shit to me
on the topic of claymation being pretty rare, mason lindroth (hylics) is probably my favorite claymation animator. love the way he plays with claymation not just as a medium, but brings attention to the clay as a material through animation but also the writing and "lore" of hylics. its a game thats in a weird way about clay
OG Animal Crossing legit mentally prepared me for life in America lol
This is the reason why I abruptly stopped playing new horizons randomly one day about a month after release. I thought it was stupid how I was using my free time basically doing digital chores to pay off a digital loan. No hate for people who like these kinds of games but I get no joy out of decorating which is the large majority of the game’s appeal. Without that it’s just an adulting simulator with a cutesy aesthetic.
mr bones coverage and hylics background music, radical ass video
calling classical music boring is a crime, like listen to anything by shotsakovich and tell me thats boring
The 'moog city? HATSUNE MIKU!?' bit made me laugh out loud hahaha
