- As the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine approaches, the majority of people in almost every European country are opposed to the war... with one notable exception. Serbia has long been an ally of Russia, with close political and economic links.
It is thought that more than 70% of Serbs support Moscow over Kyiv. In the capital, Belgrade, pro-Russian graffiti can be seen on walls, while souvenir shops sell President Putin merchandise and even pro-war symbols.
So, where does it come from? Is it historical links between two Slavic and Orthodox nations, is it realpolitik or is something more insidious at play?
Working with BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight, Newsnight's international correspondent Joe Inwood travelled to Serbia to investigate. With thanks to the World Service Investigations Unit.

Not to mention that US and NATO were back then ilegally providing weapons and logistics to terrorist groups on the ground (until 1997 UCK was described as terrorist organization by CIA itself) who were attacking Serbian police and civilians, kidnaping local people and selling their organs while UN and NATO were turning blind eyes on this. In 1998 Clinton magically changed their status from a terror group into "freedom fighters" and supported them on every possible way together with his NATO allies making a training camps right across Serbian Albanian border. When they fail to make anything on the ground since Serbian troops until spring of 1999 recaptured almost all towns and villages in Kosovo, US started bombing Serbia making direct war crime and brake of international law for which until today no one was responsible. What US and UK were complaining today they did exactly the same things to others but back then there was no mass media hysteria and I don't remember anyone placing sanctions to US for war crimes and invading of other countries in the past like Iraq. P.S. BBC deliberately picking some extreme examples like this guy and try to reflect those to the whole society, go to Belgrade by yourself and ask regular people on the streets what they think.

The Ukrainians reacted "even softer" than the Serbians? The Ukrainians have been fighting the Russians for over a year, actually winning battles and withstanding daily bombing. All NATO had to do was bomb one little ole television station and the Serbs immediately surrendered their dream of "Greater Serbia" like total biatches!"

To begin with, I would suggest learning how to properly write in English. Secondly, I would suggest to take a better look at historical facts. According to many articles and news stories, Serbian militants (chetniks) caused havoc in Europe, by attacking Bosnia, Croatia, and eventually Kosovo. Consequently, the West was tired of these war crimes, and decided to go through and bomb the Serbian criminals, as a way to stop the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo (very good strategy, I would suggest to look at the bombings of Serbia, its very interesting). Furthermore, this intervention of the US, ended up working and hence got rid of Serbian militants and killers. Lastly, according to many official sources, the Serbian government has also been responsible for the murder of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand which was one of the main causes of WW1. All in all, Serbia has always been a problematic country, and the intervention of the US was well deserved!
My favourite part is this argument of the american ambassador, who says that we see them as friends because the involment in sports and appreciation of their culture. I find this truly hilarious. Forget about the bombings, forget about our involment in Kosovo's independence, forget about our army base that is there to always remind Serbs who is in control, forget about every narrative that portraits u Serbians as savages, focus at the involment in sports. Borderline criminal. That can maybe work with american people but not with us our dear ambassador.

Im from Serbia.A lot of people suport Russia but there is a lot of people for Ukraine.I think most of people are against this war.We welcomed a lot o people from Ukraine and Russia.
I'm curious, why do some support Russia? As a Serbian yourself, why do you think they do? Maybe it's the desire to tie themselves to a military superpower for protection of some sort? But that is misguided. As an Albanian, I am supposed to hate you and yes, I have to admit, I don't like you (as in, the government) and that's because we hosted a refugee family during the Kosovo war and their stories were so ugly, I haven't been the same.
But, I have Serbian friends here in Canada and I did experience hate from other Serbs, even though they were born and raised here. I also have my Serbian friends that I get along with just fine and we respect and like one another.

So they tie all they hopes with Russia. They imagine that its a military powerhouse and Serbia will punish its neighbors if they coerse with Putin. Effectively they are a bunch of angry losers nothing more.
Fortunately, there's a large fraction of the country that wants piece with the neighbours, European integration and democracy. Especially young people. In Voevodina there are a lot of infrastructural and humanitarian projects financed by EU. Its way better to be able to go visiting Bosnia or Romania instead of thretening anyone with territorial claims.

EU funds a lot of projects, in member or future-member states, that benefit common people not just elites. Beside the monetary incentives, they provide many regulations that benefit people - you will breathe cleaner air and eat better food. You will be able to trade freely with 450 million people, you will be able to travel without restrictions, live and work anywhere inside EU. Foreign companies will invest in your country, create jobs and elevate the living standard for everyone. United we have more power to negotiate better conditions when trading with outside countries, especially large ones such as USA or China. If some country finds itself in a difficult position, others help. It's like SFRJ but with more freedom, far more money and it takes care of everyone evenly.

I'm an American, who spent three weeks in Belgrade last month to visit family in the region. Honestly, I didn't have a single conversation with anyone about the war. The RT "propaganda" billboard in this video is actually an advertisement near the City Centre for RT Balkans, and the majority of souvenirs being sold are Serbian not Russian.
The BBC journalist literally scoured for every single pro-Putin bit of graffiti he could find in Belgrade to make it seem like the whole city is covered in them.

Thank you for your comment. I'm from Serbia and I always try to not have bias and to have open mind to any opinion... but this documentary was so much misleading. People they talk to, things they recorded...its not representing Serbian people at all and many facts got completely twisted for proving their (wrong) point.

I actually remember the shock that caused NATO bombing in across Russia. My friend was in a high school in a small town of Magadan, he actually studied in a so-called English-speaking school where focus was made on learning English language and US/UK culture and they had close ties with American Alaska state, and girls and boys were really pro-American there. But when NATO started bombing Belgrad the young 16-year guys just on their own decided to remove US flags from their classrooms, it was like their country of dream committed a crime.

I've spent a lot of time working in Serbia on/off for some years. It was a great surprise to me to realise that the Serbian people have a very elevated / educated culture and are warm and welcoming. Modern Serbia is moving forward to being a very successful and competitive Western-style country. There will always be (very understandably) anti NATO feeling, for the bombings of their cities.

I don't see anything respectful in supporting any invasion. Ukraine didn't recognize Kosovo, and Ukraine didn't support the bombing of Serbia in 1999. Ukraine sent much aid to help Serbian civilians. Serbs' opinion about the Russian invasion is a terrible betrayal directed not only to their Ukrainian Orthodox and Slavic brothers but also to their current government which does not support that invasion.

I was speaking with my Serbian friend, me a Greek, about the war through a religious point of view. His answer was that this war doesnt make sense, not that other war makes sense, and he doesnt really want to talk about it because it makes him sad even debating who is in the right side and who is not. The point is that the whole intervention in Serbia was sanctioned by the UN. The justification for the intervention was to prevent ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Subsequent war crime trials proved this was happening... Serbians that externally blame the US (or whoever) are only embarrassed for the atrocities they did to another ethnicity and projecting their blame otherwise they would have to face some criticial self-reflection and retrospection.

It’s no surprise Serbia backs Russia. Since before WWI they have always seen Russia as a protector of the Slavic people. Russia backed Serbia against Austria in 1914. The West has little influence here.

I'm from Africa. Here you will find ample evidence that the West was and still is wrong in the way it dealt and still deals with us: From slavery to colonialism, neo-colonialism, socio-economic explotation, political interference (staging of coups d'etat against governments with popular inclinations, genocidal civil wars and installing corrupt puppet dictators responsive to Western interests), exploiting our tribal differences to saw division, plundering our mineral resources, civil strife and famine.... You name it. The West did it all here in Africa.
Of course you wouldn't know anything about it or, if you do, as a beneficiary of it all, will deny it, just like you now deny cornering Russia into this war with Ukraine.

It is hard to say the truth about Serbia - on the one hand there are feelings and a certain sense of moral, but on the other hand there is a certain sense for the "easy living and to retreat without a fight". Time will show which side there will win in that history full of suffering that on the one hand was led by the personal interest from their leaders and on the other hand was led by the logical behavior from the "criminal minds" who there did nothing else than their leaders - thinking only about their own small interests. Who there will win at least is the one who there will have no criminal and egocentric mind.
We are not backing Russian invasion, we are against the war, we see it as tragic war between two slavic and orthodox countries and we wish for peace.
ps: And in short if you wanna know why Serbs love Russia so much beyond all cultural ties, the biggest thing is that if Russia didn't backed us up in WW1 we probably wouldn't exist today.

Germanic nations were just looking to excuse to go to war, and they got what they deserved in both world wars. Germans will never rule the world as long as we Slavs exist.

Serbians and Bulgarians always saw Russia as their Big Slavic Orthodox Brother and their liberator from Turks. As a defender of their small Orthodox Slavic countries against the Muslim and Catholic oppressors and invaders. They would feel the same way about Greece, but they are not Slavs.

Once this occured the russian Czar Alexander called back his army to Russia and left the Bulgarian one alone against the Ottomans. Now imagine you just liberated 7 years ago, the highest rank in your army is Captain (no generals yet) and you have to fight a 40 million nation with your 4 million not really trained people. This is the "brotherhood" that Russia showed bulgarians.
At the end of the day, the ottomans did not attack, but the Serbian king Milan decided to backstab and take Sofia from the bulgarians because they stacked the army on the bulgarian ottoman border. Longstory short they did not succeed. In fact they almost lost Belgrade for this but the result of the russian "brotherhood" is that bulgarians and serbs will never have the pure relations they had before.

A lot of Bulgarians support Russia. You just need to go to the outskirt villages of Stara Zagora and you'll see the Russian flag on houses. Lots of politicians back them too although on the outside they seem to support Ukraine.
I've been to Bulgaria Sofia and I didnt meet one prorussian. I've met alot of people, talked to people and wore an ukraine pin with ukraine flag. Bulgarians are very smart and they know what communism does. They rember the corruption and they still feel it.
