- After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, countries around the world were forced to take sides.
Most in the West sided with Ukraine, but in Serbia, a country with its own recent history of war, a sizable pro-Russian nationalist movement began to become more visible.
These groups not only align themselves with Moscow, but also present a clearly anti-Western perspective.
Just over a week after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, thousands of Serbs took to the streets of Belgrade.
They waved Russian flags and held the pro-war Z signs and portraits of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
The organiser of the protest, Damjan Knezevic, took to the stage, calling for Serbs to support Russians.
To understand why, reporter Jovana Geogievski, working with BBC Eye Investigations, followed the ultra-nationalist Knezevic over the next year.

let me tell you an anecdote, in 2000 the US delegation came for an official visit, the Serbian government took them to the aviation museum where the remains of destroyed US planes are on display, remember the F117, the US general asked the Serbian colonel "how does it feel to fight against the most powerful army in the world" to which the Serbian officer replied "I don't know, we never fought against the Russians"

But Serbia had neither resources nor allies and was surrounded on all sides, so it agreed to a ceasefire

The character that Tolstoy based the character of Vronsky on is the Russian colonel Nikolai Rajevsky who died as a volunteer for the freedom of Serbia in 1876 in the Serbo-Turkish war.Serbs are pro-Russian, but the majority would never wage war against Ukrainians, because in our eyes there is no difference between them, but if someone were to ask for volunteers for the war against the British, there would be tens of thousands of Serbian volunteers.

NATO bomed Serbia in 1999 even though Serbia never attacked a NATO member. It has the Kosovo problem which is internal problem. Kosovo terrorists started bombing Serbia and Serbia only retaliated. NATO is supposed to be a defensive alliance but yet they attacked Serbia. So you cant blame Serbia for being anti-western because the west also placed sanctions on Bosnia unless they declared independence. Serbia committed warcrimes against the people in Kosovo and displaced many from their homes. Serbia also did the same thing to other Balkan countries during the Yugoslavian Civil War but this time with genocide. The Serbians invaded and started a war with 3 former Yugoslav country and one special administrative entity.

BBC neglects to openly say that the Serbs and Russians have been friends for centuries and that friendship only grew stronger despite challenges such as wars, including two world wars, economic hardships, political issues like isolation, communism, etc.

You have no idea what the real brotherhood between us and the Russians is, which has lasted for centuries. Many Russians gave their lives fighting in wars as volunteers for my country. From a young age, I was brought up and taught who was good to me and who was not. We love Russians because they are our brothers, not because we have some benefits. This is just sad. I was always sympathetic towards Serbia and considered NATO actions against Serbia in nineties as a big mistake. Everything changed for me when Putin started the war. I hope Russian disgusting regime will be overthrown, Russia will lost this unjust war and we can build a fence around Russia to separate it from the civilization. As ever with these things, this boils down to the human tribal mentality linked to race, religion and language, with some key add-ons. Serbia and Russia have a long history of close ties due to their shared Slavic and Orthodox heritage. The Serbian language is also closely connected to Russian. You could argue this is fairly similar to the Russian/Ukraine situation but what makes Serbia different is how the West/Nato is seen by the respective players. The most recent political alliance between Serbia and Russia is founded on a deep sense of resentment toward Nato for its role in the establishment of new republics that were a part of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, namely Kosovo and Ukraine. Putin and Vučić argue that Serbia and Russia have been wrongly portrayed as aggressors when they are only trying to protect their ethnic brothers. Trouble is, that in the case of Ukraine, unlike Serbia, the vast majority of the populace look west, not east for their political/cultural cues. Putin’s fatal mistake from day 1 of this conflict was to seriously overestimate just how much his ‘Ukrainian Slavic cousins’ would be receptive to his aggressive intrusion. I have dozens of cousins and a fair few of them I don’t get on with.

If someone knew about the recent history this wouldn't be a surprise at all. There's also an overlap of serbians who 100% support Putin and his war and serbians who support russia and other "anti-american" nations for various geopolitical reasons, which doesn't mean they support the government per se, but they empathize with the often weak position of these countries vs the stronger political alliances of the west. If we want to judge the political affiliation of many serbs we must first analyze without bias the role the US/NATO had in the global balance in the recent 30/40 years.
