- After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, countries around the world were forced to take sides. Most in the West sided with Ukraine, but in Serbia, a country with its own recent history of war, a sizeable pro-Russian nationalist movement began to become more visible. These groups not only align themselves with Moscow, but also present a clearly anti-Western perspective.

Just over a week after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, thousands of Serbs took to the streets of Belgrade. They waved Russian flags and held the pro-war Z signs and portraits of the Russian president Vladimir Putin. The organiser of the protest, Damjan Knezevic, took to the stage calling for Serbs to support Russians.
To understand why, reporter Jovana Geogievski, working with BBC Eye Investigations, followed the ultra-nationalist Knezevic over the next year. With rare access, the team revealed their ties to Russia and Wagner as well as the reasons behind their ideology.

Example, serbia allows people to celebrate their culture but an Albanian at the border crossing is arrested for having his flag on display. So when I hear Serbs talking about Albanians should implement some laws that give Serbs special treatment in Kosovo, I immediately think that these people are just sheep repeating slogans like robots.

It's not surprising who are the Serbs supposed to like Nato who bombed Serbia and stole kosovo.
Why did nato bomb Serbia? Just because they hate you, or envy you for your orthodoxy? No, its because you had a dictator Milosevic who was killing Albanians, throwing them into pit holes, into ice trucks, basically getting rid of Albanian population in Kosovo by killing them. You think that's ok? If they give you back Kosovo tomorrow, what would you do with million+ Albanians now new Serbian citizens? Again put them in pit holes and ice trucks? Problem with Serbia is that its a church state, there is no way a president could be someone who is not a big orthodox believer and a "big Serb" whatever that means.
Yet it was the Russian army who was the first to leave Kosovo after 1999, go figure.

Does anyone remember Count Vronsky from Anna Karenina? The character that Tolstoy based the character of Vronsky on is the Russian colonel Nikolai Rajevsky who died as a volunteer for the freedom of Serbia in 1876 in the Serbo-Turkish war.Serbs are pro-Russian, but the majority would never wage war against Ukrainians, because in our eyes there is no difference between them, but if someone were to ask for volunteers for the war against the British, there would be tens of thousands of Serbian volunteers.

Serbia historically supports Russia and vice versa. Why people won't just accept and respect that as a fact. But at the same time it doesn't mean that Serbs support the war. They also see Ukranians as great friends. And today, the so-called country of Kosovo (whose legitimacy nobody accepts if they're educated on the subject and aren't morally bankrupt) is the most crime ridden country in all of Europe (if not further), a central hub for heroin distribution in Europe and beyond, and the non-Albanians in it (especially Serbs) are treated worse than Palestinians in Israel, with Albanians frequently raiding their homes (despite being dirt poor and barely surviving), assaulting them and rarely facing repercussions.

In 1941, the population of the region was only about 6,500,000 and among them were 1,925,000 Serbs. The total casualties of the Bosnian War was only 1/4 of what has been done to the Serbs during WWII. So when Yugoslavia broke up, Serbs took a stance to not let history repeat again. And you call that genocide? How come Croats and Bosnians have rights to self-determination but the Serbs don't? Also, Serbs were the ones most invested in the idea of Yugoslav brotherhood. Tuđman and Alija just had to break it up, and they turned against each other not so long after. That really shows the quality of their characters. You shouldn't just blindly follow what western media tells you. Serbia is an island of sanity in the ocean of neo-liberal degeneracy. Jednostavno zašto ne ideš živjeti u rusiju ili srbiju,e lako je pricati gluposti iz udobnosti koju imaš brzo bi ti promijenio misljenje (kad bi radio mjesečno za 200eura prosječne place )i htio bi se vratiti u mrsku ti ameriku koja te hrani a pljujes po njoj,i čemu onda tolika želja ljudi da dođu živjeti i raditi u toliko mrsku EU i ameriku zašto ne idete u rusiju kad je bolje. I still haven't met a man in Serbia who doesn't support the Russians in this war. There might be a few neutral people like me, but it's not true that a part of the country supports them, almost everyone supports them.
FYI, most of my family members consider Putin's war against Ukraine to be idiotic. From my experience, the Serbs are pro Russian people, but not necessarily pro Putin. Also, the Serbs are not against Ukraine and her people. And considering that we consider Kosovo to be a part of Serbia, which implies that we support the lawfully definined international borders, we are not for partitioning Ukraine too.

Nationalism is an evolved tribal instinct. Chimpanzees in the jungle go to war over territory and eat bodies. That's what nationalism is. Your take on "History of Serbia-Kosovo war and NATO bombing" conveniently left out major parts of the story, it doesn't really mention how it started, it conveniently lefts out parts about western hypocrisy in different cases in Yugoslav break up and it totally ignores 2004 pogrom of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija.
You also label those anti violence demonstrations as pro western and anti Russian for no clear reason as they have no mention of any kind of foreign policy or geopolitics and clearly have both pro and anti western people participating. And you imply that everything that right winged parties and organizations do has some kind of Russian/Wagner influence or what ever and on the other hand you know that the other demonstrations are "grassroots"...
Friendly advice to BBC, if you are trying to influence things in Serbia by doing this kind of documentaries you should support the opposite side, because your propaganda is so unpopular in Serbia that it has adverse effect. Every decent thinking human in Serbia, when sees that BBC is attacking someone has a gut reaction to defend that person. I'm not a Serb, nor am I from Serbia. The anti-violence protests did not drown out the nationalist ones, because they are not related. The anti-violence ones are focused on the shooting, the abundance of firearms circulating about and the media/entertainment industry within Serbia which affects the youth. These groups has no political influence in Serbia but deep in our hearts Serbian people have love feelings for Russians because they liberated us in 1944 and helped us to liberate from Ottoman occupation that lasted for 4 centuries. NATO bombed our country illegally and occupied part of our territory so no surprise that we support Russia.

I am ready to prove you wrong. Russia not liberated Serbia in the real sense during 1944, Red army was passing through Serbia anyway and in some places like South Serbia together with Bulgarians (the same ones who switched sides in the last moment) approved communists to gain power and installing Tito to his position. Tito was until then hiding not being sure what will happen before Belgrade was liberated so they directly sided against Serbian interests. We liberate ourselves from the Ottomans! Russians participated in the Battle of Varvarin and couple of smaller battles along the way. Other battles where Russians participate were mostly Russian volunteers and not the main Russian army that were small in numbers so First and Second Serbian uprising happened and then developed thanks to our own will, if we waited for the Russians we will done nothing. When NATO illegaly bombed Serbia without UN approval Russia stand on side, did nothing to prevent it and even after when their troops arrived on Kosovo they simply leave it to NATO despite the main agreement Russian troops could still be there. Who teach you this history? Only time that Russia 100% supported Serbia was during the WW1 thanks to Nikolay Romanov who sacrificed himself and who deserving full honors not only here but in Russia too.

Please have the facts right, Kosova has been always inhabited by Albanians who are descendants of Dardans. The population was Albanian always even after many waves of ethnic cleansing conducted by the Yugoslav state. The Serbs migrated to these lands in the 7th century and were a small principality until they starting displacing Albanians with the help of Russia from the mid 1800 and all in the light of religion. In the foundations of the churches that Serbs claim as their history are the ruins of Christian churches since the 1st century AD. Dardania always sought independence and fought for it but Stalin and Churchill had already agreed on attaching to Yugoslavia. The Albanians started the break up of Yugoslav state because they were treated as second class citizens, it was an appartide state that eventually led to Milosevic trying to cleanse Dardania in 1990s. Nato only intervened after the Bulgarian intelligence made the cleansing plan named "Patkoi" known To the public. These reports only mention the NATO bombing and nothing about hundreds of thousands of burned homes, 16000 dead, 1600 children still missing, raped women and decapitated bodies. Please reflect all the facts.
