KRIGSGALDR Translates to "War Incantation / Battle Spell" - I think - and the song is about pre-Iron Age Germany. How peaceful ancient tribes became warlike in response to invasions. The story was translated from carvings found on stones dating back way before the Vikings or even the Romans. The animated music video tells the story better. Speaking of gamers, you might be interested to know that Heilung's music was featured in the trailer for Hellblade 2.

The lands of pre iron age germany were very peacefull until the arrivel of the proto germanic tribes in scandinavia and the baltic coast of germany and poland. They expanded south to the Harz mountains. After the gallic wars of Caesar the celtic kingdoms of southern germany got destroyed by germanic tribes like the markomannii. But even the germanic tribes were not very warlike until the romans attacked them. That was the point were they become warrior cultures.

It's not so much about going to raid, it's about fighting to live. The lyrics in the middle literally say "What if I want to talk about peace and understanding, but you only understand the language of the sword?" The official music video they made for this is a little disturbing and graphic in a runic sort of way. It depicts a village being invaded by outsiders, men being killed, women being raped, and finally, they fight back, wiping out their enemy to try to preserve their way of life.

Great reaction. For the record, it has nothing to do with Native American, it has shamanistic elements LIKE Native Americans but it comes from Germanic shamanism. All peoples throughout Europe pre-Christian era was pagan. The Germanics and Celts being more isolated than the Meditations held onto their shamanistic elements for a longer period in history so Heilung tries to represent much of the sounds they would of had as documented by the Roman Empires encounters with the outside, erry, world.

There's some cultural debt here though. Heilung's Faust has a style of throat singing clearly inspired by that of Mongolia and Tibet. It's an interesting intuitive guess on how cultures of colder climates might have similar sense of sound - I mean, you can stumble upon some forms of throat singing when you've got a sore throat and your voice goes low. Regardless - the show was _amazing_.

Christianity has completely destroyed most pagan religions whereever it spread. Some parts were absorbed (most Christmas and Easter customs we know) because people wouldn't give up all of their traditions upon conversion.
With Christianity being on a slow decline in Northern and Western Europe in the past 30-40 years there's been a lot of renewed interested in trying to piece together this lost cultural identity from whatever scraps remain. Despite all the interest we will never be able to restore what it once was, but what I feel is happening is more akin to making something new from parts of something that was broken. There's not really any coordinated effort, it's mostly sole historians and artists like this band with an interest in historical documents and artifacts who will interpret them in their art or literature. But exactly this continuously happening over long timespans is how new cultures are born, isn't it?

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert.
    @
Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held.

    those english lyrics btw:
What am I supposed to do
If I want to talk about peace and understanding
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace
But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking...
So my tongue shall become iron
And my words the mighty roar of war
Revealing my divine anger´s arrow shall strike
All action for the good of all
I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun
    The sword is soft
In the fire of the furnace
    It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
    They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain
    Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
    The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    Coexistence, Conflict, combat
    Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you
I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise
    To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification
    Look like dying embers

Thus, not strange if people get associations to other such shamanic practices. Sami, Innuit, American indigenous people, Siberian ones, or whatever. I am pretty certain Heilung have found inspiration for their costumes and make up in other places than Germanic core areas, even if that is where they get the material for their texts, as far as I know.

5:52 "you hear that sound and your village is about to be invaded." True words! That is exactly what the song is about, except sung from the side of the villagers being attacked. Living peacefully in isolation until war is forced upon them. This is all the more powerful when you listen and see the performance while taking in the lyrics. It invokes so many emotions. Truly a masterpiece.
    The household wanes,
Vil threw a death wave over those
the oar locks wore out for, with the tired mast-top
    Who brought...
Who brought the horde over to the far country?
    The godly-fish from Firnøy’s streams
    Swimming in the drift
of the land of shining meadows.

I was so looking forward that ANY of the reaction channels FINALLY tackle "Heilung" (which means "Healing" in German).
There is something pre-christian, pre-historic in that music that speaks to our inner-ancient root. That is what binds all spiritual traditions with Shamanism is the oldest of them all, it's so similar worldwide with all tribal people.
There are actually anecdotes from people with major illnesses in the hospital bed who started to listen to the deep layered songs of Heilung (healing) and they got better, became more grounded. It changes you!
