Mongolian throat singing, also known as overtone singing. The real deal, no auto tune. Takes years of training to do it right, and if you don’t, you can blow out your voice.
@@tekiiy Overtone Singing is the catch-all term for producing multiple notes at once. Several different styles exist even within each category, for example according to Wikipedia the Mongolian tradition has seven or eight different styles depending on where in the body the harmonic overtones are being created.
The lead singer uses kargyraa. This is the same technique used by Blind Willie Johnson and the old Popeye the Sailor cartoons. Overtone is the sygyt style, where the mouth is used as a resonant cavity to produce harmonics.

And fully comparable to the Horst Wessel Lied. In these days we should we be mindful who we idolize, and the Great Khan's armies killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined.
@ Not really. During Stalin's total reign he killed between 30 and 40 million people. Hitler killed, just in his own lands now, about 11 million (5 million or so holocaust victims and 6 million or so of JUST German troops). That puts you at 41 or 51 million. Khan is estimated to have killed about 40 million people or so with his conquering. None of them hold a candle to Mao though. Also I don't know where you got that I idolize him. Still the numbers will always be hard to quantify and in any case yeah Mao takes the absolute cake in terms of numbers.
You could have added subtitles to understand what they were singing. But you basically guessed it: It's a warsong. Basically they sing that they don't care how the enemy will come at them, they will be kicking their ass.

I first heard this band the other day and found myself completely addicted and bought their album "The Gereg" and what a great decision. The whole album is great. Just proves that language is no boundary for great music.
Fun fact : The Hu opened for Babymetal on Babymetal's US tour. There's a picture of them together if you Google it. It makes me happy seeing these badass mongolian dudes hanging out with Babymetal on tour. Globalization has its downsides, but different cultures coming together through music like this is definitely not one of them!
The pics of the girls and Slipknot are pretty cool too. Quite the juxtaposition. I'd like to see them with GWAR (in a pic...I don't think I could handle a show!)...both the bands enjoy performing for kids. I know GWAR has a child friendly show (props to them for figuring out how to pull that off).

It is pronounced "who" and you are right, it is a battle chant, its all about bring everything you got and not only will we meet you in battle, we will win. The instruments were traditional Mongolian instruments and the singing is real, its Traditional Mongolian Throat Singing. The reason you kept feeling a Native American vibe is the fact that the two cultures are cousins. Same ancestors, ancient historically speaking, you should check out the lyrics, its so similar to Northern Tribes here in The Americas. I'm from a North-Eastern tribe, where many of us still have that Mongolian look to this day. My ex looks like the singer's brother. LOL I was even born with a birth mark (that disappears after infancy) called "The Mongolian Spot".... LOL
You should check out their song “Yuve Yuve Yu” The name is pronounced “who” for us Americans. Their singing is called throat singing and is not synthesized in any way.
Tuvan throat singing is one of my favorite styles. Absolutely beautiful and engages your voice to do things you never thought you could. Ladies, if you’re having a hard time with gutterals, vocal fry, dual tones and certain notes, please try to train yourself in throat singing, it’ll engage you to get out of head voice. It’ll take time but it’s so rewarding once you are able to do it.
Turn on cc, it is subtitled in eng. They ARE saying hu (who), it is short for huunan meaning human. They have 5 more official videos, 3 of which are collaborations. Throat singing/overtone. No electronics. Instrument is morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), 2 strings made of horsehair, as is the bow.
And they are one of the absolute best bands I’ve ever seen live and from the front row last November. We were supposed to see them again in May but Covid stopped that as they were stuck in Australia for months. Absolutely amazing and they sound even better live.

It is Mongolian throat singing. It originated from the Mongolian people. Said it sounds like a dijeridoo, I shouted THANKYOU! That is exactly how I've been describing it. They wrote and performed a song for a star wars game. They have a CD and it is badass, but I wish it was a dvd because their videos are epic. Check their song honoring women. You WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED but you might cry.
This is definitely based on an old Mongolian war chant. You missed out on the awesome lyrics by not have the subtitles on. Basically, the say, if you come looking for trouble, they will start by striking you like thunder, and conclude by handing you the wrath of heaven. That is some serious trash talk.
I love The HU, I'm so glad you guys reacted to them! You should Definetly react to the song Sugaan Essena, another song by The HU, which translates to The Black Thunder. It was made for a Star Wars video game, and it was reverse engineered from Mongolian into an entirely alien language.

Farrar not always built beautifully, it was a homemade instrument, quite often very very basic, The HU have made changes to their Horse Head Fiddles for musical differences and of course for the look
It’s called “Morin Khuur” in Mongolian (Horse head Fiddle in rough translation). It’s supposed to mimic the sound of horses. If you listen to Morin Khuur solo, it sounds like singing horse. It’s quite beautiful imo

a lion with blue mane is another name for a snow leopard
@@christopherhanton6611
it's funny to think about how some animals' names sound in other languages.
Like, how hippopotamus in greek means "River horse"
or bat (murciélago) in spanish is roughly translated from its roots to "flying rat with wings at the tip of its fingers"
The “ cello” is called a Horsehead Fiddle, the “Guitar” is a three string lute, flute is a Mongolian Flute and the last member playing a Jew’s Harp.
I listen to them daily, you should do their other song call “Yuve yuve yu”
I should also say I love your videos and seeing how others like music they don’t know about or have never listen to
Ghengis Khan is bad ass as well!
Or Sugaan Essena they did for Star Wars
Definitely another one of my favorites from The Hu
the gereg is pretty amazing by the hu
Mongolian throat singing, also known as overtone singing. The real deal, no auto tune. Takes years of training to do it right, and if you don’t, you can blow out your voice.
@@tekiiy Overtone Singing is the catch-all term for producing multiple notes at once. Several different styles exist even within each category, for example according to Wikipedia the Mongolian tradition has seven or eight different styles depending on where in the body the harmonic overtones are being created.
It's also done by First Americans, (American Indians).
The lead singer uses kargyraa. This is the same technique used by Blind Willie Johnson and the old Popeye the Sailor cartoons. Overtone is the sygyt style, where the mouth is used as a resonant cavity to produce harmonics.
saw them live back when they came to lawerence kansas back in october 2019 and loved every moment, the crowd packed the theater they were playing at and even though no one knew what exactly they were saying, everyone knew they loved the energy people were giving them, the enjoyment of their songs and music, their vibe, everything, so much so that they were practically shaking the entire theater when they left, they came back for an encore and played one of their best well known songs "Yuve Yuve Yu" people went wild, love them and have a lot of their stuff they were selling then, i dot buy much from concerts but did buy a lot then
Wow! I would love to see them live the energy must have been incredible!
That's a great song to
@@NikiHolmes seen them live it is
Yo you know a dude named Jeremy s. Lol you sound alot like he would
You CANT be still hearing this.. The beat is SO ADDICTIVE!!
the saying "bottom of the totem pole" means unimportant... but in reality the bottom figure on the pole is the most important/influential person.
I just learned that a few weeks ago. I had no idea
As many have pointed out this is an OLD Mongolian War Chant from the time of the Great Khan. They just put music to it. More of these guys I suggest Chinggis Khan and Yuve Yuve Yu. If you want to watch them with subtitles so you can get the lyrics you can but you don't have to. Both are amazing pieces of music.
@ Some Europeans are just so touchy when brown people are better at conquest, empire, and food than they are.
Sugaan essena is also pretty good
You could have added subtitles to understand what they were singing. But you basically guessed it: It's a warsong. Basically they sing that they don't care how the enemy will come at them, they will be kicking their ass.
Y'all should have watched it with the subs!!! Lyrics were literally "whatever the hell you are, come and we'll end you!" LOL Love it!
Damn really, that's crazy
@@Hollywood6IX Lol paraphrased! But yes! OMG Thank you so much! Your video was in my recommended list and I had to listen to the song before watching your reaction, and the Saaame way you guys were grinning and bobbing your heads, was what I was doing! I've been binge watching their videos for the past 2 hours now! NO regrets! I'm in love with this group!
They’re not cellos they’re called Morin Khuurs ( I’m not criticizing just correcting, love the channel)
In English, you usually refer to this instrument as a "horsehead violin"
Thank you!! I was wondering what kind of instruments those were, to seek out more music with them. :)
also known as the horse head violin
I’ve heard it referred to as a “horse-head fiddle” most often.
I thought it was an igil.
I first heard this band the other day and found myself completely addicted and bought their album "The Gereg" and what a great decision. The whole album is great. Just proves that language is no boundary for great music.
It's the intent, the feel. the power of music is that. it's music you can listen to and feel.
They also had their own tour last year
@@kekelaward The Hu, Slipknot, and Babymetal all together. I don't think my heart could handle it
Hu is Mongolian for human, its called the human band.
both the English and Mongolian languages stem from Persian
hun means human in mongolian.
So... That makes them The Hu...man League?! 😂😂😂
@@tseketsek5511 Atilla the Human of the Human tribes...
@@CorvusCorone68 um no while Persian and Mongolian does have similar roots the language of even old Mongolia doesn't come from Russia but rather influenced by the same root. One has to remember that while that scholars today mostly believe that the altaic languages homeland should be somewhere in the central Asian steppe. But a lot of this is conjecture and it could be that the north influenced the steppe.
Oh my god i'm so in love with you guys, no one had ever reacted to The Hu
and they are great.♥️♥️♥️♥️
There are tons of Hu reactions.
My favs are
Rebecca Vocal Athlete
Beth Roars
Tara Simmons
Jamel_aka_Jamal
best line of the song: "if you come with evil intentions, we'll give you a fight"
The Hu always blows me away. One of favorite of their songs that they did more recently is Song of women ft. Lzzy Hale. You should check it out. Her voice blends surprisingly well with the throat singing.
Saw them live a couple of months ago in a small venue. I can tell you they sound even better live. No effects, no nothing, just amazing human voices.
Nobody understood anything of the lyrics, but damn, the atmosphere was amazing.
Less than a year ago, I saw this video by chance on UA-cam. I immediately looked them up, saw they were touring the US, bought 2 tickets to a show hours away! After just the one listen. And they were incredible in person. It was a small venue and I felt so honored to be in the presence of their greatness
LOL
Yes I agree. I am Dine Navajo and the language tongue is so similar.
That is his real voice. There's an actual term for this type of singing, it's Mongolian throat singing.
You should check out their song “Yuve Yuve Yu”
The name is pronounced “who” for us Americans.
Their singing is called throat singing and is not synthesized in any way.
Seriously though, Alexa is a dick and won’t pull it up half of the time, no matter how I pronounce it.
Hu is not who hu is 2500years ago was impire
I like that song!!
Another awesome song!
Fun fact: the carbon footprint of human beings decreased because of how many people the mongols killed during the height of their empire..
We need them to clean up the civilizations mess we are into, once more !
They killed 1/4 of the population!
They'd fuck up the Taliban and Al Qeada in no time
Hollywood Ghostbusters
You are aware Al Qaeda doesn’t exist anymore?
Well it is what it is, can't do nothing bout it now,can ya
Tuvan throat singing is one of my favorite styles. Absolutely beautiful and engages your voice to do things you never thought you could.
Ladies, if you’re having a hard time with gutterals, vocal fry, dual tones and certain notes, please try to train yourself in throat singing, it’ll engage you to get out of head voice. It’ll take time but it’s so rewarding once you are able to do it.
I was lucky enough to see the HU band. Live. Just before covid 19. You got the name right. Please check out the hu band song of women.
Woop Woop! A team up with Lzzy Hale from halestorm.
Lzzy was awesome with them 🥰
Glad to see people are finally listening to this incredible sound!
I have loved this song for so long, so glad to see them getting world wide attention
They've recently been doing cooking vidoes while they are in quarantine in Australia.
They did it all the way through their US tour...Their channel is here on youtube.
The next song should be Alien Weaponry - Kai Tangata wich is a Maori Havy Metal Band.
Fuck yeah bro. 🤘. Seen them at the Tivoli in Bris Vegas. OOF.👊
that sounds interesting will have to check that out
That’s an awesome song, pumps me up!
That song is addicting
Absolutely need to react to this one!
*the gang shows up not at all expecting to fight literal Mongols *
The Mongols, *starts throat singing*
And they are one of the absolute best bands I’ve ever seen live and from the front row last November. We were supposed to see them again in May but Covid stopped that as they were stuck in Australia for months. Absolutely amazing and they sound even better live.
Mongolian throat music at its finest
❤❤❤
👍🏻
I like that you guys could tell it was a war song right away.
Correct, that's why this one on my war playlist.
He is using traditional Mongolian Throat singing. Ancient form of singing for their culture. And the instrument all traditional Mongolian instruments.
That's throat singing and the amazing part is the whistle you can hear besides the low tone. It is amazing! I love them!!
I luv the traditional old school Mongolian musical instruments...and the beautiful traditional Mongolian throat singing ...it just adds to the edginess of the song...❤️❤️❤️❤️
Now for Kai Tangata by Alien Weaponry. Maori metal (native language of New Zealand)
YES!
Another war chant!
Been trying for a while to push Alien Weaponry
I blast that song once a day lol
they good but need more publicity
You two really seemed to enjoy this one, so here are a few more. This other version of what you just watched is harder, & Jacoby kills it with the call & response. I hope you will do 1 or more of these. Thanks guys.... stay safe & stay strong.

Norovbanzad - Under The Sun Of Placid World you may listen this song on you tube
If you guys are falling down the pagan music path you need to check out Heilung
I was hoping someone would suggest Heilung
Yes, fucking please. Do either Hamrer Hippyer or Alfadhirhaiti. Also do Wardruna w/ Aurora - Helvete
Exactly what i was thinking. Good call.
Norupo or othan!! Or hakkerskaldr. Heilung is amazing
Yes! Heilung is so good.
It's Mongolian throat singing. I love this. Soooo happy you reacted to a song on my driving playlist!!! Thanks from Melbourne Australia xxx
Super pumped you guys finally got around to this one! HU have many bangers like this. Revisit this one with the translation turned on. Ole’ Smoke wasn’t to far off either. haha
Ningen Isu - Heartless Scat for another mind blow!
Thanks guys!!
Yes, Heartless Scat!
The Horse head violin is so pretty to listen to, and always so beautifully designed.
Anybody feel confirmed that the native Americans are descended from nomads who came across a land bridge from Asia?
TOTALLY!
Patty Melt or island-hopped across the pacific, but yeah, probably more of the former.
were not though
Yes some of that showed up in my niece's DNA. She's about 30% native Canadian
@@stonechild4him Navajo still share DNA with Koreans.
This is the HU they are the coolest awesomest band on the planet check out all of their songs and videos they are all awesome and they keep getting better with time. Mongolian throat singing at its finest. If you ever have a chance to see them live take it. They are a Motorcycle Club not a gang that is called a Morin Khurr and in some somgs he makes it neigh like a horse and the guitar like instrument is called a tovshuur if you turn on the captions you get the lyrics in English on some songs.
Check out Bloodywood from India Ari Ari Ari, To Jee Veeray, Endurant they are a great band too.
That is how their voices really sound check out their other songs they are awesome too.
That is legit throat singing. They can sound that way with nothing other than their vocal cords. It is awesome
Oh wow if you guys enjoy this you'll Love a song they did with Lzzy Hale, of Halestorm, called Song Of Women. It's special. Check it out. 🤘✌
ABSOLUTELY!!
That song touched my soul. It’s now my battle cry. ✌🏻
They are touring in the US this summer (2021), if you can, you MUST see them in concert!
The band's name The HU, is the Mongolian root word for human being. They call their style “Hunnu Rock”… inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire, known as The Huns in western culture. Some of the band's lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry.
check this out....the lead singer of papa roach joined them on this song....there is some English signing on it....."The HU - Wolf Totem feat. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach (Official Music Video)"
Shitty version...
Oh definately recommend that version ( the original is great as you've seen). It's a bit more of a different vibe with Shaddix.
There a second collaboration video with lizzy hale of halestorm
Trash
Everyone is chill, till the Mongols start war-chanting
Would it be okay if I join their side?
@@rattheninja2877 Sure, but bring your own horse and/or motorcycle
When I saw this on Facebook, the caption was "Klingon Rock".
Basically the message of the song is "You bring an army, we'll bring a legion. We will not be defeated."
Excellent description
Song of, fuck around and find out.
dude I'm so obsessed with their sound in their tones it's unbelievably love
I absolutely love The Hu! Can highly recommend Wardruna and Danheim to react to, those were the bands that led me to The Hu 💕
The Great Chinggis Khaan is Probably my favorite from their album
I’ve always loved throat singing, war chanting basically anything primal
Mongolian Throat Music is an incredible talent...
the instruments are all traditional Mongolian
Modern instruments as well JFK
My favorite song by The Hu thank you for experiencing it!
Turning on the captions will give you the translated lyrics from these guys.
If you catch the lyrics you'd be even less willing to take them on. lol
I was wondering if anyone pointed that out
Turn on the CC and listen to the song again with subtitles. You won't walk away from them. You RUN! Trust me :)
Gentlemen, you have GOT to watch this again with the subtitles turned on. It's the most hilariously testosterone driven thing ever.
Will do
Not seen a single negative react to this amazing piece of art yet, love the hu. :D
I love these guys, they can see the art and genius in stuff that is new to them. It's cool to see their excitement. Love your comments freaking hilarious and awesome. Best reaction videos out there.
“They got their own war song”
All right boys now for your own edification watch it again but turn on the subtitles. Always watch them with subtitles on to get the meaning they have it translated!
If tribal music rocks your boat check out the official video for Kaitangata by Alien Weaponry
They came out to Australia a couple of years ago, and I got to see them. Amazing. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. And I've seen over 300 bands live.
Hey. Just wanted to say thank you. I discovered y’all during early ‘21 lockdown up north of the border. But you kept me company.. happy holidays .merry Christmas and happy new year to you guys, and anyone who reads this comment.
Nice reaction, guys. Now try the Hu's "Sugaan Essena"; a version of their "Black Thunder"...reprised for a Star Wars game. You'll get to see the whole band.
Ninjen Isu Heartless Scat is a badass song you may want to check out. I may be wrong but I think it's Japanese.
Yeap, Ningen Isu is Japanese. And those guys are in for a surprise with this Heartless Scat, they will understand the concept of power trio.
Good pick
The whistle tones in the intro are also done by overtone singing (aka throat singing).
It's called "Throat Singing", and Wolf Totem means that they are part of the Wolf Clan... it's not necessarily a war cry, but a really strong statement of who they are.
I just found you guys with this reaction. No doubt, The Hu will get you hyped. I always listen to one of their songs before I do a bicycle race to get pumped.
