That artwork of King He-Man definitely has some Conan vibes to it. A real "Heavy weighs the head that wears the crown" feel.

One of the movie pitches that fell thought was to have Arnold return as King Conan to pass the mantle of adventurer onto his son possibly to be played by the Rock. Too bad it never happened!

I never collected the Classics line, mostly because I wasn't into the subscription model of getting the figures, but for all the beautiful work that went into that line and all the great figures it produced, my personal favorite is also King He-Man. I just love everything about the way he looks. The crown, the beard, the scar, the busted up 200X Power Sword, the fact that he has to wear full armor now, the expression on his face. The coolest thing about that figure is you could show it to a fan of the original line of MOTU who hadn't been exposed to ANY other MOTU media, and they could be told so much story and history just be looking at King He-Man. It's amazing.

I was completely unaware of Classics when they were coming out, so my first experience with King He-Man was the Minis. I had no clue who he was and what his story was... This is a good look into that. Thanks.

Haha, that Spector-flying car thing looked pretty cool. Would love to see some comedy relief stories w/Spector as a overly “toyetic” character with a cave of unused stuff and maybe he’s got a crash journal like launchpad McQuack from duck tales. Would love to see an excessive and over the top almost fever-dream like story for that character. He deserves to be funny.

This figure took a while to grow on me. I love the concept, though. I ended up taking parts off the figure and making two out of it; one a King Adam, and one a King He-Man after he uses what little power was left in the electronic sword. The mix-and-match-ability of this line really gratifies my imagination to this day.

It can be a tricky and complicated thing to keep a long time franchise going and to move forward.the one time I think it worked the best was when Star trek the next generation premiered.you do get push back from some because a lot of us can't picture out heroes ever aging.to me Luke Skywalker is still the young jedi we saw back in 1983.I got to say if I made a whole story and concept and toyline to move a brand forward and it got erased or wasn't even considered after I left I'd be a lot more upset then you seem to be about it.

So King He-Man vs King Adam, the best argument against it I found was that it undermined the importance of Adam, a common theme with He-Man was that Prince Adam was as important as He-Man and fans seem to like that and the message it gives - remember when that episode of 200X implied (possibly unintentionally) otherwise and everyone moaned? Your choice of King He-Man for the name wound up implying that this wasn't the case which gave a bad message and undermined the original message. Do I think that? No, not really, I'll be honest I never really gave much of a toss either way.
On happier note: This video was really informative and really good.

Mattel actually still uses "paper" & not back it up "digitally"? Odd. No wonder so many ideas were "lost in transition". It sounded like an interesting idea though, too bad it never came to fruition. IDK which came 1st, but it kind of reminds me a bit of Marvel's "King Thor".

  • @spidl

I am not sure this approach works long term for most brands. I think The Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have long term success with doing reboots with the same characters that are the most popular. By the time brand cools off that "move forward" is thought to be necessary it is also probably a good time to reboot the story as well with the main cast.

    • @nwobw
      @nwobw 2 роки тому

Exactly. You stick with what brought you to the dance.
      MOTU is He-Man vs Skeletor.
That isn't to say you can't explore side characters, but they are the main characters of the brand.
Imagine making a Friday the 13th movie with no Jason, or a Fantastic Four comic without the Fantastic 4, or a TMNT toyline without the 4 turtles and Shredder.
Only idiots or people severely out of touch think this way.

Anything is canon to itself. "Classics" is a mashup of a lot of elements of both the 80s and 2000 various continuities - so technically it is canon to nothing else in a strict sense except itself. Star Wars expanded universes use other continuities as apocryphal legends that may have a bit of truth to the primary canon.

@@benflay6038 agreed. But note also 200x isn't canon to Filmation. One of the problems NETFLIX just had was their advertising strongly implied it was canon to the 80s He-man (which of course it wasn't in any sense, just to itself and it was objectively tone deaf bad writing- and 80s could mean several things including Filmation or DC comics or the toy packaging). In "classics" case it is canon to "classics" toyline packages.

This was a great idea but an awful figure.
Terribly designed figure. It's actually quite shocking and impressive how you could screw up something so easy.
    -----------------
Comic characters and action figures are largely identified by their color scheme and key visual designs.
King He-Man looked liked a Frankensteinian mess of different elements stitched together.
He should have blended elements of King Grayskull/Randor/He-Man.
He-Man is identified with brown, red, orange, silver.
Your King He-Man has predominately green and gold? What the hell?
He has He- Ro parts and influence?
Nothing about King He-Man says "He-Man" to me.
    Horrible design in my opinion.
The 4H way over thought this and screwed up.
