Who is Fang Man from the Masters of the Universe Classics Toy Line? - now with Filmation Characters!

- Scott Toy Guru Neitlich from Spector Creative recounts his time as brand manager on the MOTU Classic Toy Line and how Filmation characters from the animated series were incorporated into a line that previously could not use them.
For the record, the "bait" of Shadow Weaver worked on me, and I'm not complaining. You need to sell toys, I want to buy toys. It was a win all around. As for Fang Man I'd wanted a figure of this character since I was a boy so like all the other Filmation figures that followed it was a literal dream come true when I got mine. A big thanks to all involved in bringing this to reality - I am one fan who thinks the whole team did a great job here.
Well at least it did in one person!
i wonder if guys like Emiliano have the capacity to regret the things they did, you were the linchpin for this. Keep the stories coming!
Oh more are coming!
Sadly during this time, He-Man was living on the nostalgia farm. If I had known 1/2 of this stuff from your videos, I'd probably have a ton of MotU classics in my collection. So many of them look so very cool! Great video sir!
He kinda still is
Yeah I wish I had invested in more of the classics too.
It is sad that fans can't help each other out. The vibe at the org was always a snobish one in my opinion, stopped going there during the 200X era for that same reason. Great job as usual Scott, keep them coming please.
It can be!
Fan site took the possibility of contributing and threw it in the trash. Mattel doesn't usually take ideas. Certainly closing the door to fan synergy and positive feedback loop ....which would make it more fantastic
I really did try!
@Spector Creative that guy was a moron. Good for you for trying.
Thanks again, Scott!
Ans Thank you!
Thank you for getting us Fang-man. You made my inner seven year old very happy!
It was all from love
P.S. Batros was my all time favourite character besides Skeletor and I always thought he fit in the best out of all the "guest" characters so thank you for bringing him to life.
Hé turned out great!
I was so glad that you guys could start making the Filmation figures.
Me too!!!
I remember as a kid putting characters like Fang Man and Strongarm on my "want list". I had no idea that they were non toy characters. Fortunately back then it seemed like new toys were always coming out, so they were not missed until we realized a couple years later that toys of them were never made.
Hey it only took 30 years!
I thought your choices for Filmation were great! My top 4 wants were Fangman, Icer, Strongarm, and Plundor. You (and the horsemen) nailed them all and I have always been grateful for that!
Thanks! It was like choosing a favorite child!
Very informative and eye-opening! Thank you! Loved that Fang Man figure. The engineering on the neck was great, and he came with a bunch of nifty relics. Marvelous!
The horsemen nailed it!
Bring back classics!
Fang man, very cool! Malaktha is a personal favorite and I’ll probably never see it.
Absolutely! He was part of -- if not the outright instigator -- of FIVE adventures. Dude needs an action figure! He should come with a shovel, a pick-axe, and some relics, like the Grimalkin statue, and a lenticular Ancient Mirror of Avathar.
We could also do with a Dragoon, and Kothos in both colour schemes. I could go on, but I'd be here all day . . . .
Mattel just needs to make more Classics!
@@archlogan5573 Agreed! But I wouldn't object if they waited a couple more years, so I could re-arrange my finances and save up, first! 😉
Wish we had gotten to him
Another interesting one. Thanks man.
Glad you liked! Repost and share if you can
You really have led an awesome life. I don't even want to calculate how much my collection has cost me over the last few years because I need to get them from eBay. I do love the figures though. They are amazing, especially compared to every action figure I've ever owned. I have almost 20 of the Filmation figures
I feel very blessed
Scott's critics can't deny this, but another commentor reminded me that Scott ran the Motu line longer than the original line in the 80's, especially with no media presence. He also was able to produce more characters in plastic form as well. Give credit where credit is due. In general, I never understood why fans complained so much about little things, when they were getting figures that never saw the light of day in the original line. It feels like there is a small but vocal fan base whose opinions are so nit-picky that they unfortunately influence the direction of a brand into oblivion. In the end, everyone loses when that happens.
And all made with love
Yet another figure that was on my skip list but I ended up getting anyway. Like all of the Classics rescued from that list I'm really glad I decided to pull the trigger on him. He's a lot more impressive in hand, and the Sword of Darkness is a nice bonus pack-in!
Worth it for thé accessories alone!
Wow, so you gave Emiliano the opportunity to contribute to the line, and he used it as opportunity to express his narcissism. I'm new to collecting, but i was born in '76 and MotU was my FAVORITE toy as a kid. I had a lot of them, including Castle GS. I've read a lot of old forum posts from the MotUC era, and let me tell you, a lot of those guys were just ridiculous in their whining and entitlement. I'm sorry you had to deal with so many spoiled children in adult bodies. Collecting Classics, Masterverse and Origins now, the quality of the figures you released remain unmatched. You should be proud of what you accomplished. I am.
Sweet!! Keep them coming SDN!!
If you keep watching!
Nice. Thanks.
Always welcome!
Very interesting Scott, thanks. Too bad though really, because Filmation is my favorite variant, next to the vintage line. I still groan about knowing that a fully articulated Cringer was on the table for 2016 Club Filmation, but it never got produced after you left, because the new team didn't know how to put it together. I am hoping that Mattel can sneak some or all of the top A-list characters in Filmation variants for Origins.
Oh i so wanted that cringer!
Sorry, but I'm addicted to your Channel
Don’t ever apologize for that!
The guy who runs the Power Rangers fan site and owns Toy Wizards actually helped out Brian Flynn when he was asked about Power Rangers ReAction.
See that is awesome!
6:14 Man what a jerk. Also a waste of opportunity if someone reached out to me to help with Masters of the universe I would’ve been excited.
Cripes, I would've LEAPT at the chance! You'd've had difficulty getting me to shut up, I'd be so passionate about it. (And if Mattel is reading this, this would also be a good reason to hire me -- HINT, HINT! 😉)
That was REALLY childish of Emiliano Santalucia 😑
I was as shocked
WOW Scott, great story. This goof guy was given a HUGE opportunity and he blew it. DUMMY!!! Great figure!
Puzzles me too
I hope your experience with one fan site didn't sour you on all of us I guess he figured that as a mattel employee with access to the archives he must've felt you would know all this already..heck if you do another line and want help call me:)saw you took another jab at the French fella again.now now don't be bitter:)
Oh not at all!
Not only a really cool toy, but also a figure that shows how deep the line was 😇
Truly!
Fangman has a similar color scheme as Captain Planet
That he does!
Another great informative video! I always wondered why Melaktha was never made...especially after Shokoti and Lord Masque. Was the figure in the cards for a later release?
We would have gotten to him in time!
I think Fang-Man is a fantastic figure!
He thinks that about you too
I got this huge classics collection. Everyone is saying it’s soon going to be worthless. I’m sick
This collection is amazing and probably will never be someting like this again...
I can’t disagree
So the He-Man-Dot-Ogre Man was still super butthurt you personally wouldn't make his Blue-Elf-Teela Poochie character. Got it.
What character?
@@uriddler Illumina
And we tried to put her in the line!
@@spectorcreative1872 After what he did. I would've put her on the blacklist. Never to even be considered.
No Chef Allen, we were robbed.
Clearly
I wound up getting a bunch of fang man figures unintentionally lol when I needed a figure and would buy it from somone they wouldn't separate from fang man so I acquired them that way lol I think I have like 5 in total
Hey you can never have enough
@@spectorcreative1872 very true!
‘Just six’. ‘You sure?’ ‘Yeah, that’s all we’ll manage.
Well kinda
I definitely wanted Fang Man and Lizard Man when I was a kid and wasn't sure why there weren't toys of them, especially when they did one of Jitsu, who at least didn't look like a racist caricature like he did on the show.
And boy did he!
I didn't want or need or need Shadow Weaver. To a small degree I didn't see or get the hype. And I like the Filmation series. So I sold my Shadow Weavers. It never really bothered my that it was a subscription figure. But I knew that it was a well liked and demanded character so I knew it wouldn't go over well. As Scott hinted at, it didn't.
And that totally works too
Some Guy: Toy companies are predatory!
Toy Companies: Yeah, but we wanna know what you like to make!
Me: Do your research and Shut up and take my $$$!
Pretty much how it goes
who is Fang Man? One might ask.,..Toy Grueru explains. AND KNOWING IS POWER
The other half of the battle
Bu..bu..but I thought toy companies were my best friends! Seriously thou, though, some fans have of had this disillusioned belief that if a toy company talks to the fans, they are their friends, and therefore shouldn't take it profit into consideration. I had seen it happened to the smaller toy companies who spoke to the fans regularly, thinking that they were friends.. I do not see it as much today, but I am sure there are fans that are like that.
No, but Jam makers are
Why not start with he man battlecat?
Because we were doing original characters in classic style. He man was done!
@@spectorcreative1872 makes zero sense got rights to filmation start he man not obscure characters big hits first like super 7 had massive success with
2:35 HAHAHA ohh the know it all man child collector…
Yup
Were there any figures you wanted to do that you didn't get to do?
How about a video on times when shareholders quashed what could have been a successful idea, or pushed through a bad idea?
Seconded!
shareholders don't take that specific kind of decisions. Managers do. But still, good idea to a video about rejected ideas.
Oh yes! I did a whole video about that!
What is the link for it?
I always hoped we'd get a Horde Invaders three pack and General Tataran. Shame Super7 aren't allowed to continue classics. I like Masterverse but I doubt we'll get that deep into characters. Especially NA.
Maybe Super 7 will get the license back
I always thought Emiliano was kind of a douchebag. He is a talented artist, though there were a few characters that others have drawn better.
My favorite MOTUC figures were the Filmation ones that had never previously appeared as toys. Goat Man (not Filmation but a personal favorite), Fang Man, Strongarm, Batros, Icer, Lizard Man... I loved these figures! (I still need to get my hands on a red Granamyr.) MOTUC is still my favorite line out of all.
Still more talented of an artist then I
I remember seeing his respond on the retroblasting debate, stating that Scott lied about reaching out to one of the He-man creator's for the 30th Anniversary seroes. I don't know who to believe as I don't much about Emiliano outside of his work on the He-man comics and Transformers toy concept designs. That said, are there any comments or quotes from him that makes out as a douchebag?
@@FallenGemini Yes. During the 200X run, he routinely levied criticism against the 4 Horsemen on their designs. Particularly Skeletor's. And then when MOTUC came out there were posts he made critical of the designers as well.
My problem with him is similar to my problem with ClownfishTV. We as fans get treated to new content, which is a great thing. And while it's fair to have opinions and even criticisms, repeated negativity makes a person a douchebag IMHO.
@@thewasp7324 he sounds toxic. He also seems pissed off with Val. Did they have a falling out?
@@thewasp7324 I stopped watching Clownfish when I realized he was using tactics used by right wing pundits and youtubers to get clicks. I don't think he leans right, but his most of his audiences do, and they enjoy his toxic content.
Shame Mattel seperated she ra from masters. I think continuing filmation figures would of saved heman in the 80s
Midnight Edge just did a great video going over this! @midnightedge
@@spectorcreative1872 ya i saw it. Super 7 she_ra line would of been perfect for the boys line in the 80s. As well as continuing the he man show
Wait-a-minute! Wait-a-minute! Hold up! Are you saying companies are actually trying to make money!? *clutches invisible pearls* I thought Santa and his Elves made all the toys of the world with communist magic for free! Thanks, Scott, you RUINED my childhood! lol :P
I know, a real crime
Emaliano? Really? Damn
And I thought we’d finally get to start doing something together
Clearly people had no idea how lucky we were to have a fan running the line. I can be honest and say I did not like everything in Classics, but I was with you a solid 85% of the time and was good with the other 15% as I know not every figure was for me. I am amazed that the Org didn't jump at the chance to work with you. It feels like politics, you get more attention and followers by building hate and fear. Either that or I am just getting old and pessimistic.
Thanks! I am just thrilled the line was able to go as long as it did!
Ok. I gotta call it. Spoiler alert. The next one is Snake Face. (ok. I'll admit it. I had to stop and think about it for a couple minutes because I kept on want to say King Hsss, or however it's spelled now a days.
Oh. Good call. I was gonna say Stonedar and ended up over thinking it.
Bingo. But I am going in release order!
Mattel sent me two of him but no squeeze 🙄
That is bizzare
@@spectorcreative1872 I use them as guards for snake face
I don't remember this character; it's been awhile since I've seen the original He-Man episodes. And I've lost a lot of respect for Emiliano Santalucia 😑
I'd get his side of the story first.
I was so shocked he did that
Wow, what a jerk that guy was.
We tried!
The character was such a fail that Spector hardly even showed the character in this review 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Really?
Emiliano is a clown man. He's a egotistical dork lol. Very emotional man. He shows his emotions all the time in comments on fb and elsewhere lol. Probably here, too.
It was a shame
Sucks Emiliano did that, but Val is no better, for personal reasons, I am not a fan of his. He's very pro censorship, of everything, not a good guy.
It is a shame as I thought this was a great way to open the door
@@spectorcreative1872 I would have told you if you were close with your list, and made creepy eye contact THE WHOLE TIME. ;)
Sweet!!! Keep them coming SDN!
