Someday they will realize they have been wasting their own energy and time hating unnecessarily and trying to ruin others' happiness... they will realize that the essential is to not care about others views and to enjoy one's passion. As long as it makes you happy, that's what matters like you said! If someone's happiness is annoying you, especially that they aren't doing anything wrong but genuinely enjoying the hobby, then that person(hater) has a serious problem! The issue with bootleg figures is that if they're done very well or near perfect then they will be bought and resold by others who will pass them off as authentic. Those bootleg may even cost you as much as the OG. The ones that are low cost may also be poorly done so then it feels like a waste. Either way, my main point would be that they can be passed off as authentic to collectors who aren't aware of the difference. This mainly is for resellers doing this as mentioned earlier.

    Amen brother! I agree with everything you said! I'd like to add to it. I'm in the construction business and I make GOOD money at it. But I'm out in 100 degree and -30 degree weather no matter what is going on that day. I work very hard for my money but at the end of the day, when I get paid, I respect my money and myself too much to part with it easily. I also keep my priorities in line. It's more important that my bills are paid, the kids have good clothes and shoes to wear, there's food on the table, all repairs around the house are done, and that my wife is happy and her needs are met. The last thing on my list is a silly action figure or my collection. People who put their collection first have had it too easy and they need to re-think their priorities and get a real life. There's nothing wrong with collecting and having fun, but don't lose your perspective or priorities. There are more important things in life then action figures. I have a lot of respect for someone who spends less on their collection, because they have more important things to spend their money on. It's not that they don't have the money, it's because they have priorities. Peace!

    In theory, I oppose the concept of bootlegs or stolen IP, but given the market, with it's scalpers, rare retailer exclusives, bad distribution, or ridiculous shipping costs on eBay, if I can't get an authentic release at a reasonable price, then I will happily fill the hole in my collection with a bootleg.

    • @TheStonedMandalorian
      @TheStonedMandalorian  15 днів тому +1

      @@BiggestDawgEver in theory it feels gross. But then what the companies are slacking on: scalpers (in the sense that people are making 3-5 times maybe more by selling these older figures that whatever IP could be banking sales in on), distribution, shipping prices, exclusives even. It’s an untapped market that any company (with the internet and instant access most of us have) should be aware about and have some part of the marketing team understand what these figures they refuse to rerelease from older waves and such are selling on the aftermarket for insanely inflated prices.
      If the company is gonna kick rocks and lose out on money by not giving faithful, loyal, or even causal collectors what they need and want for their display. Some of us are gonna do what we gotta do to fill that section of our collection, squad, or team pit.

    Preach! I think knock offs just get a bad rep because the sometimes inferior paint job or what I initially thought is the item is just gonna fall apart or break easily.
    I was wrong about that and own few knock offs today, some of them I’m more than happy to finally own a version of a figure I wanted and beats the aftermarket or scalper prices today.
    I had a knock off of Raphael from the movies and I had to ask around if it was legit or not. I ended up selling it after a while and the new owner painted it up, and it looks awesome.
    My only issue with them is when the seller tries to pass it off as the real thing in the listing (using the promotional photos, etc) and you get the item in person.
    I think it’s a nice alternative and have never felt the need to shame someone for buying a knock off.
    My guess is they think someone a person enjoying a bootleg somehow devalues their version a bit. Idk. We’re talking about a community that is almost always in a dick measuring contest and trying to one up the other. Like, obviously they’re not all bad but the toxic encounters tend to stick out more than the pleasant ones sometimes.

    Bad quality products using character likenesses and engineering that's not theirs.
    That's the problem. They're making money off stuff that others made and own without the rights or permission in lower quality.
    I'd rather support the ones that actually earned money.

    • @TheStonedMandalorian
      @TheStonedMandalorian  24 дні тому +1

      That’s a fair reason. I can’t knock you for that at all.
      But in most cases people are buying KOs of figures that are either hard to come by or way too high on the aftermarket.
      When a figure is listed for double even triple the price it retails for, that’s not going to the IP anyways. It’s going into some third party sellers pocket. So either way the company you want to support is losing out on money. That just comes down to the brand you collect and rather or not they rerelease a certain rare or expensive figure in a certain wave.
      One example is Star Wars TBS. There are so many figures getting “refreshes” (just a rerelease on the same packaging) that are literally over double what they detailed for. Captain Rex is basically impossible to come by if you don’t spend at least 80- 150 bucks. Even more on some listings iv seen. Then there’s Bossk, hera, Sabine, hunter, crosshair, empower palpatine with his throne, ect. There’s even more than that, that’s just a small list.
      All of those figures I just listed were all INSANELY priced in the aftermarket. When someone has decided to bite the bullet and buy one of those figures, Hasbro doesn’t get that money. It’s going to the third party seller. So in essence by Hasbro not deciding to give these figures a “refresh”, they’ve been losing out on all that money. Money that collectors spent with OTHER companies because Hasbro didn’t have these figures available. So instead of those 6 years where those figures were “out of production” people have been spending DOUBLE just to get these characters on their shelf.
      That should be where the marketing team of sed company does research to find out what is selling and what collectors want. None of us want to spend MORE money than what it actually sells for, we just do it because there’s no other way to get that figure from the brand you want to support.
      Let’s just say last year 100 collectors bought captain Rex for their collection. They each spent 100 bucks a piece (that’s on the lower end for that figure too) that’s 10,000 dollars out of collectors pockets that we didn’t get to spend with the actual IP. If hasbro had that figure it would be 25-27 bucks depending on where you buy it. But IF Hasbro had that figure they would have made that money (2500 bucks if all 100 collectors bought from the actual brand. But because this figure is so scarce, collectors are just taking the plunge because they want sed figure/character in their collection.
      I think that’s the majority of people buying bootlegs. I doubt many people are going to buy a bootleg of a figure that’s readily available. MOST of not all the time, people are buying KOs for one of two reasons (this doesn’t include scummy scalpers who try and pass of something fake as real). One is that figure is way too expensive over retail, or that figure is rare and it’s hard to come by (or it’s just not in production anymore).
      But I understand what you’re saying. If I have the choice I’d always rather buy the authentic real thing. But in some cases that’s just not possible.
      Another example is symbiote Spider-Man. He’s 50 plus dollars on the aftermarket on average. When someone buys that figure it’s not going to Marvel Legends. It’s going to the seller who has it listed. So either way sometimes even if you buy the authentic product it’s not even supporting the line you collect. It’s just supporting the seller you bought it from.

      Definitely an appropriate mentality to have for collecting. I love action figures but I just don’t see the point in paying 60-100 bucks (or much more in certain cases) for a figure that retails at 25-35 bucks. Now for certain figures like Neca or hot toys, I totally understand paying a premium price for stuff like that. But I’m just trying to have cool stuff on the shelf. At the end of the day, there's only one true reason for why people buy bootlegs/KOs/unlicensed 3rd party; MONEY.
    People have other stuff to deal with outside of their passions and hobbies. The same case applies to collectors, so people have to understand that not everyone has the money for everything. Not to mention that not everything official is worth their asking price, be it cuz of quality control or just what companies charge for what little stuff comes in the box.

I am and have been a collector for several years. I love Marvel Legends and retro, along with NECA. I get hate from people because I keep all my figures in the package unopened...unless due to the window removal for a short time, I did open to make sure nothing was missing or swapped. The only figures I really have opened are the BAF figs that I wanted to have the BAF as a figure itself. To each their own, do what makes you happy. I also wait, and wait for clearance and peg warmers. SO many times a fig becomes a peg warmed and years later it becomes a huge want. DO what is right for you. As long as your happy, and not breaking the nank...DO YOU!!!! Great vid, glad I came across it.

  • @awesomereviews1561
    @awesomereviews1561 25 днів тому +1

    It’s really easy why. First it drives the prices down for the real item ( see the original Goku Black for example). And then it doesn’t give the IP any money to support it. And some KO are very expensive and they shouldn’t be ( KONG for example, super expensive and very poor quality control).
    I don’t mind KO, some are even better for the faces like Tonsenarttoys. But they should be a lot cheaper since they don’t pay for the DBZ license.

    • @TheStonedMandalorian
      @TheStonedMandalorian  25 днів тому +1

      That’s an interesting take. As far as paying MORE for a KO, that doesn’t make sense to me. And if it is more expensive than the authentic version I wouldn’t make the purchase. The whole point of a KO is to be cheaper. Like you said, it’s not like they’re paying for licensing or anything. So they should be dramatically cheaper for that reason.
      I don’t know much about DBZ knock offs but there is never a reason to pay more for the fake version. That’s wild. That all comes down to the collectors judgement and preference.
      To me it doesn’t make sense to buy a ko for something that is readily available. I don’t know how rare or not rare this goku black figure your talking about. But I know he’s an essential dbz character and probably the most populist anime character of all time.
      The only way it hurts an IP is if they don’t have it available or don’t plan to do a rerelease of that figure. That’s what actually drives the market price up. People buying KOs and spending more on the fake versions can definitely hurt an IP. But then you could wonder about how well their marketing & distribution is through whatever company is producing sed figures.
      In some cases KOs can drive prices up. Looks at the Neca tmnt turtles for instance. They were hard to come by for years got rereleased then became scarce again. Then other people started producing KOs of that line, then that drives the price of the authentic ones up because they’re even harder to come by.
      Every line has its issues rather it be reuse (which is important), marketing, distribution, pricing, availability, ect. There’s even more than that I’m sure, stuff that I don’t even have a grasp on how it works exactly. But I’m the instance of what you’re talking about, it just comes down to good judgment and what you’re willing to spend. Or not spend on certain scenarios.
      I appreciate your input awesomereviews! Thank you for watching and commenting.

      @awesomereviews1561 25 днів тому +1

      @@TheStonedMandalorianfor SH Figuarts/ DBZ the KO figures can cost double the price of a real one. For instance a real Goku SSJ 3 cost 60 bucks, but a KO from KONG costs around 150 bucks or more. It costs more because they use an updated mold ( that they took from SH Figuarts Son Gohan 3.0, whereas the original Goku SSJ 3 uses 2.0 mold) and different face plate.
      Or you have the Demoniacal Fit base Goku that cost double the price of the SH Figuarts original Goku. Same thing, they use an updated mold (3.0 vs 2.0) and to be fair it looks better than the original ( until SHF release a 3.0 version). But it cost double the price and that’s not good.

The thing for me is, my shelf is stacked with a lot of nostalgia, for me! I can care less what someone else who didn’t spend MY money on MY collection. Rule of thumb though, is doing research on knockoffs you’re potentially going to purchase. I’m getting black series knockoffs right now but have seen numerous video reviews about them. If they review good, I get them because they are complete custom clone troopers. Which Hasbro hasn’t released yet.

      PREACH!! Tell ‘em what it is jaygaming!
      I totally agree with you Jay.
      For example: the new 212th airborne clone trooper is pretty damn accurate and looks incredible!
      I literally just said the same thing in another comment. As you said it’s up to the collector to do the research and use their best judgment. A lot of knockoffs are very accurate. Another example is the regular phase 2 clone Jesse. That figure is practically identical to the Black Series 2020 clone body. Maybe slightly loose (for lack of a better term) but honestly not loose enough to where it has trouble standing or posing. In fact the articulation BECAUSE of the looseness has some insanely smooth articulation.
      I also stand by what you say about if a line has not produced a certain character or figure, your more inclined to buy it KO. But if that specific line DID have that character, most collectors would obviously more likely buy the authentic version. I’m in that category. If black series released a better version of Jesse or whatever other custom veils or AliExpress has, I would buy it. No hesitation.
      Some KOs are even better than the Original they’re trying to emulate.

Many official releases from hasbro black series don’t interest me and the figures I want (such as stormtroopers, clones or droid army builders for example) are impossible to find in my area. I buy high quality bootleg clones from sites such as aliexpress or third party sellers. As a customizer I use bootleg figures as the base figure to help defray the cost whenever possible.
    If people have a problem with bootleg figures the simple solution is not to buy them. It’s really that simple. The bootleg market supplies the consumer with that which can’t be bought at reasonable prices or which is not available. It’s a supply & demand scenario.
    I’ve learned after 51 years not to be bothered by the negativity that is spewed by others, perhaps it’s jealousy, maybe self-righteousness, or possibly motivated by self-interest but as Stoned Mando says- we work hard for our money. Oversized, cheap, cheap plastic, strange colors and totally fun. I've heard of some TF collectors having dislike for certain TFs, not just knock off. Whatever. Buy what you want.
    Those TMNT look official. How much were they cause official NECA ones are so expensive. And at Walmart?! Dang. I've seen official toys with bad paint apps, stiff joints, etc.

      Yea it’s a little strange. I’m not a big transformer guy but I gotta admit they look freakin siiick.
      And the ones that I got were 90 bucks for all 4 turtles. I forget how much it was with shipping but all in all they were all cheaper than 25 bucks per turtle. I was pretty impressed with them quality wise for the price. Obviously the legit Neca is probably INSANELY better, but I just felt like it was a good deal. There is some sloppy paint on them, some of the joints are a little loose, the accessories are a tiny bit lack luster, but once they’re on the shelf they look so dope. Compared to spending 100 plus bucks on a two pack with Mikey and Donny or Leo and Raph. I would definitely reccomend you checking them out at least.

    when it comes to Star wars bootlegs, i am pretty put off by them, the only reason being because they cost the same or more than official figures. The entire point of bootlegs was to get a cheaper version for a dirt cheap price. Now i see clones on alliexpres for 25.99+ shipping. Then when youtubers make videos about the alliexpress clones and say they are close to the real thing, but most of the videos when youtubers pose them they pop apart and fall apart, but they still say positive things lol, some look like they have loose joints. The fact they are more expensive and more cheaply made, i cant bring myself to get them even though they make characters Hasbro has not officially made. I remember a while back wanting to get the 212 clone trooper from alliexpress but then saw the totaly was nearly 25, later i found the official ones at walgreens for 19.99. If the bootlegs were cheap then id be all for it, but the fact they are just expensive if not more expensive and not as durable as the official ones, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As for the marvel ones that are actually cheaper than official ones that have been sold out or are official are too expeisive then hell yea! id get em.

      @TheStonedMandalorian  25 днів тому

      That is a fair assessment and opinion Nathan. If you paying the same amount for a bootleg as compared to the retail cost of the authentic version, there’s something up with that.
      That is the whole reason for getting a KO. Not only to get hard to find or expensive figures, but also to get them slightly cheaper.
      The Star Wars KOs from veils aren’t terrible but I understand where you’re coming from. I have clone trooper Jesse with the accurate helmet and paint and he is damn near identical to my other 2020 clones. The only difference I can tell (as you stated) some of the joints are a little loose. But the joints on mine were pretty tight overall and the paint was pretty decent too. I only paid 21 bucks for him with shipping, honestly I would have paid the 25 for him just to have that version of Jesse. But the other ones I see like the plain phase 2 or “non-canon” clones and they’re like 26 bucks, I’m kinda out right there too. If the price is the same and the figure is readily available, I’m definitely going the authentic route.
      And as far as ML goes; from some of the research iv done, a lot of collectors say the bootleg versions have been getting better and better over the years.
      Thank you for watching and commenting Nathan! I appreciate your input!

      The way I see it is as long as a third party seller isn’t trying to pass a KO off as the real thing trying to sell it, I can’t blame them for it. If these corporate companies can’t take the time to see what figures have inflated on the aftermarket that’s on them. They are literally losing on on money because they don’t rerelease a wave or figure in a wave. And instead these third party bootleg sellers come in a fill that missing piece.
      Star Wars The Black Series is a good example of such. They have a lot of re-fresh’s being released this year. And all of them are figures that are very pricey on the aftermarket. So now with hasbro “rereleasing” them. THEY can make the money from collectors that we’re going to spend their money elsewhere on a KO or just some third party seller with the original product but for a crazy price.
      In all honesty and truth, it’s really the company’s loss.
      People will hoard a set of figures and list them double to triple the retail price. And then that leave us faithful collectors to that line getting fu*ked.
      When all they have to do a whip up another batch of a figure that has gained value. Some people are gonna pay those prices because they want that “character” on their shelf.

    I don't mind KO's since some figures go out of print and end up only on the aftermarket, or are just so crazily priced that it just isn't worth it. Sure I'm not the richest person, but there are expensive figures I still throw my cash at. Figma MP3 and Dread Samus? Yeah I bought them without hesitation. I would have never bought a Mafex Venom when I have a few Marvel Legends Venoms already. When I saw the KO of him for a fraction of the cost? I gave it a shot especially because reviews said he was great. Worst case scenario I lose out on 20 bucks instead of 100+. He turned out great and it got me to grab a Spidey, and recently ordered the black suit Spidey too. Who I'm still waiting on.
    I think the kind of message people should take away from this isn't to belittle or get angry at those buying them. They're not doing anything illegal. You can argue the seller is which is fair. The message I take from this is that if they can sell really good versions of these super expensive figures for a fraction of the price then these official companies are missing out. They should do what SHF does. Put out budget versions of figures for those who can't pay the higher prices or to get people into the line. Go basic on the paint, maybe only one alt head, no web effects, and only fist/wall crawl/fwip hands in a smaller more basic box. I'd buy an official Mafex Spidey like that for 40 no question as it'd be much better value than some of Marvel Legends'.
    You're never gonna get rid of bootlegs. It's not the consumers fault that these KO's are getting better in quality either. They're capturing a market that these other companies are leaving behind since they'd never be getting money from them anyway. Also another bright side of them actually being good is that if someone happens to buy a KO without knowing it as a gift then the person will at least be getting a good product. I wager that's where a lot of these are actually going, to gifts for kids or friends and the people don't even realize it. Which I'd rather someone get a decent bootleg as a thoughtful gift than a rather crappy expensive gift.

      That is the exact takeaway I wanted people to have from this video. You understood all my validations and conglomerated it into a couple paragraphs.
      There is nothing wrong with buying an expensive figure (if you have the moola). I’m not gonna judge people for paying 80-120 (even more sometimes) for a shfiguarts or mafex. On the flip side, there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying KOs. As long as they’re not overpriced (compared to retail), and they’re not being passed off as authentic versions.
      That market is there and is would be stale if not for the KO supply chain. Like you perfectly put it; “They're capturing a market that these other companies are leaving behind since they'd never be getting money from them anyway.”

      @@TheStonedMandalorian Hey, no problem! You popped up in my recommended out of nowhere and I've only recently dabbled in KO's. Perhaps that's why it got recommended. Another point I didn't think of is that some people would like to pay the original companies full price but can't. Take the cell shaded Spider-Man retro card from Marvel Legends. That thing was a Walmart exclusive if memory serves. So if you wanted one you had to get lucky and beat the scalpers and other legit collectors fighting over the site for a preorder, see it in stores, or pay aftermarket prices. Because it sold out within minutes. No reissues, no alternate buying options, one and done. That's horse droppings. Most collectors when somethin like that, especially when exclusive, goes up for preorder won't have a chance at it despite wanting one. So if Hasbro wants to snub customers who do want to give them money I have no problem with bootlegs coming out that let people have a shot at it.
      For instance I almost didn't get the recent movie Carnage preordered, but thankfully Amazon still had him up when I had a chance to grab one at all. I can't say I would have gone for a KO in this instance, but since I think it's a genuinely good looking Carnage variant of sorts I would have been really annoyed to miss out on him.
      Also yes unless you're buying from a known seller like bbts, EE, Hasbro Pulse etc be careful with buying expensive stuff. If you go in knowing something is a KO and are paying KO prices, that's cool. If you go in thinking it's a top notch figure but turns out to be a KO? That's just someone scamming you and that's not cool whatsoever. Just be sure to know what you're buying before you hit the order button.

That is an example of when I spent more than retail, because I wanted that figure so bad. With exclusives that are harder to come across you are most certainly competing with other collectors and (even worse) scalpers.
      All that is good advice for others to remember! Especially newer collectors. With all the preorders this, exclusive that, fan channel this, mainline that, ect. Some or even most people these days are far too judgmental or they have a strong opinion on certain things so they tell it as they see it. Especially online on UA-cam in the comments section or even on Facebook messages and sometimes even in person. They will judge and criticize you on most anything and everything including toy and action figure collecting on what you buy and if you are an in box or out of box collector. They may even judge or criticize you on stupid things like even having tattoos when it's your body it's your choice including on what type and name brand of toys and figures you collect when it's your own money it's your choice. It's like they expect you to be doing things exactly like them when actually we are all our own individual person and that's what makes us unique. Even major name brand toys and figures when they are mass produced in the thousands some can have manufacturing defects and flaws or they can have slightly different variations on the same exact figure so not even name brand toys by Hasbro or Mattel are always exactly perfect. With buying an off brand knockoff you are saving alot of money so you can possibly buy 2 different figures for the cost of one single figure of a name brand one. You are mostly just paying extra for the major name brand and possibly getting a little better quality that's all. But all plastic figures will slowly degrade over time after many years regardless if it's made by Hasbro or Mattel or a knock off brand but some still last many years if well taken care of. I know this is a long posted comment but nobody else commented yet and this is a great topic to discuss so there was alot to say. I think you’re missing the point of why buying knockoffs is a problem. It’s about ethics. You are enabling illegal behavior that negatively impacts the industry.

    • @TheStonedMandalorian
      @TheStonedMandalorian  3 дні тому

      @@SergioRoguez no I totally understand that. The only exception I see as reasoning is that the figures I buy are either rare/expensive, aren’t in production anymore, and not feeding in to scalper prices.
      I feel ya on the “ethics” of it. But if we’re gonna go down that road: what about iPhones? So many people have one and how do you think those resources are acquired? By low waged forced labor and illegals business practices. All the mercury and copper ect that goes into the iPhones is malpractice. Yet WE ALL buy iPhones (I say “we” loosely. I know some people have other phones or whatever but the principle still stands).

      It’s not like you’re buying that 100 dollar figure from the actual manufacturer (in most cases). You’re paying it to a third party company or a random collector, so it’s not going to the company either way.

    • @TheStonedMandalorian
      @TheStonedMandalorian  26 днів тому +1

      Man let’s be honest. America does on America crime. The majority of the USAs products IS Chinese. It just has an American company’s name on it . Why make it here in the states (to provide jobs and stimulate the economy), when we can make it across seas for literally next to nothing. It’s simple obviously, it’s money. (I say ‘we’, as in big corporations)
      In a sense, for years America has been struggling to keep labor over here in the US due to wages and price increases in materials and shipping. Or maybe I shouldn’t say struggling (for some companies that’s true)but choosing to go with the cheaper labor just to make an extra buck (which obviously we all know is what corporations do) is doing enough damage already to the “system”.
      But now that being said; you are entitled to have your opinion. Let me ask you this. Do you ridicule or judge others BECAUSE they buy knockoffs?
      Or do you simply just have your opinion and choose NOT to buy KOs.
      My main gripe is with people who get their panties in a bunch when people choose the latter. Instead of spending double, triple, even sometimes more than retail for an action figure.
      There are a lot of collectors that have positive experiences with KOs. But I’m that same aspect, there are collectors like you who seem to have bad experiences. Which is understandable.
