- Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. In today’s video, we’re going to discuss Satan, whether or not he’s trapped in hell. First, we’re going to see how Satan, where he currently resides, is portrayed in fiction, looking at Dante’s Inferno and then at Paradise Lost. Second, we’re going to see what scripture has to say about where Satan is. And third, we’re going to delve into various interpretations of scripture, here meaning the eschatological perspectives used to understand the bible, these different perspectives yielding different answers: Roaming the earth, locked away in the hearts of sinners, or imprisoned forever in hell.
Alright, let’s get into it.
In Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," the Ninth Circle of Hell, the deepest, most desolate, and most despair-filled circle, is reserved for traitors, treachery deemed the most egregious of sins and those who perpetrate it the most wicked of sinners, the sanctity of special relationships defiled by the betrayals of these transgressors. The ninth circle is a vast, frozen lake named Cocytus, and it is divided into four concentric rings. The ice becomes progressively thicker and more torturous as one moves inward to the circle's center. The rings house different types of traitors: those who betrayed their kin, those who betrayed their countries, those who betrayed their guests, and those who betrayed their benefactors. At the very center of Cocytus, Satan is imprisoned in ice up to his waist, continuously chewing on Judas Iscariot, Brutus, and Cassius, the three greatest traitors in Dante's view. Judas betrayed Jesus, and Brutus and Cassius betrayed Julius Caesar. Satan is described as a monstrous giant with three heads and a great pair of bat’s wings. Judas is perpetually devoured by the center head, Brutus and Cassius by the two outside ones. Though Satan participates in the punishment of, per the reckoning of Dante, the three most evil sinners in all of history, he himself is also condemned, torturously trapped in a state of physical and spiritual agony. One of the details that communicates this are the tears that incessantly stream from his six weeping eyes.

Real and literal aren’t the same thing. It is perfectly orthodox to say something’s are metaphorical while others like the resurrection must be literal (1 Corinthians 15:17).

I find it interesting that Satan in the old ages used to be painted as a very ugly being and in modern times he is seen as beautiful and charming, in movies tv series etc.
Our monsters look less gross that they did historically. Originally Dracula was nasty looking, but he got popular after he put on a tuxedo. Satan is kinda the same way.

Because in the past most people were illiterate so the laypeople relied on the Priesthood and artists to make portraits, windows or canvasses portraying nefarious forces as grotesque and animal-like. In modern times, people are more literate and can read the Christian Bible themselves... so now we all know that even malevolent forces can portray themselves as angels of light.

I think that it works either two ways: either yes he can leave hell…but God is keeping a very close eye on him or he is permanently trapped in hell but works through a conduit similar to how does.
Both are imaginary anyways.

In the Hebrew Bible, Satan was name given to one of Gods angelic advisors who tested mans faith by inflicting pain and sorrow on them but only if God allowed it with some conditions. Satan does not have horns or bat wings or red skin or goat legs or anything like that nor does he rule hell. He is just a powerless bodiless spirit whose only knows how to tempt people into sin. Even this I have problems with because today I see The "Devil" as a scape goat used for man to hurl all their Problems that's going on in the world onto instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. Kinda like frollo from the Disney film, The hunchback of nodre dam. Were he blamed the devil for his lust rather just admitted that he just found the gypsy woman hot. You kinda get the saying as well that "The devil made me do it" No one makes you do anything. Yeh i believe earth is a physical version of hell, this life is the low state of life of any life and system that exist.

Quick question i know time ran different way back when or whatever like way way back. Satan resides within ourselves self. We are our own advisary. We choose to do bad things, but refusing to take accountability for the fact that we are all flawed.... Think about it. Jesus as both human & GOD, was tempted by his evil thoughts, his own human desires are tested, the advisary,, the enemy that tempted him was within his own self, he was simply strong enough with GOD to denounce that evil. Im grateful that he did. Therefore, when we choose to sin or even decide to do evil, we are Satan. I love you all. 🙏🏾

One should research pre-Christian religion Zoroastrianism (aka Mazdayasna) and it's dualism. I think this is where the dualism of Abrahamic religions comes from. Ahura Mazda ("Great Lord") vs. Angra Mainyu ("Evil Serpent") from their holy book the Avesta seems to influence Christianity's Good vs. Evil.

I think Hell can be here on earth. The Rwandan genocide, the death camps of WW2, the Myi-Lai massacre, what was done in Manchuria when they were invaded… I think humans did all that. In the early versions of the bible the snake in the garden, Satan, and the fallen angel are written as 3 different beings. The compilers of the bible thiought if we had one ultimate good then we need one ultimate bad and decided to combine all versions of the devil. I think having multiple evils is better way to tell the stories but i understand why it was changed.

Full Preterism doesn’t make sense. While it is true that prophesy isn’t just telling the future, strictly speaking it is speaking on God’s behalf. Still, how can a prophesy be fulfilled if it has already happened? The Temple was destroyed in 70 AD and Revelation wasn’t written for about 25 more years.

What if satan controlled the churches?

The bible says that Satan will one day be eternally damned and therefore in the near or distant future he will be trapped in hell for eternity but until then the Bible says that Satan now roams the earth seeking who he may spiritually devour. One book that proves this is the book of Job (the oldest book in the Bible) where it mentions that Satan was roaming the earth his estate and was now before God almighty talking to him in the presence of the holy angels as God tells Satan about Job his faithful servant in which Satan tells God that Job is only faithful to Him (God) because of the many blessings that God gave unto Job and that if He (God) took away those blessings like his richness and family that Job will curse God.
God then tells Satan that he can do to job as he pleases and that he would take His (God) protection away from Job as Satan will be able to do to Job whatever he pleases but that he can't take away his life. Satan agrees to God's sayings and immediately leaves heaven from the presence of God and goes to do to Job and with his (Job) belongings as to whatever he pleases expect that he can't take away Job's life as an order from God almighty.
From this account from the book of Job we see that at first Satan was roaming his kingdom or estate the planet earth and we also see that he is also the tempter as he goes out to do all the horrors he plans to do to Job in order to tempt Job to curse God to his face.

Satan works for God. He's not trapped and he's not a fallen angel. That's all fiction. Dante, Milton, St. Augustine and more have inadvertently changed how everyone believes in Satan and hell, etc...
Yahweh sends Satan to do his bidding. And Lucifer is an unrelated character, also not a fallen angel.
God is actively responsible for all evil. He says it himself in Isaiah 45:7
" I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."
Not to mention the COUNTLESS times Yahweh does or orders others to do horrifying evils, including smashing infants heads on rocks en masse.
Any version where satan is trapped is just that, a "version" that some believe is correct. But we must realize that Revelation in referring to Nero, not the devil. This was understood during the compilation of the Bible. That's why Revelation was only included because it had just enough votes. One vote less and we would even have it in the Bible.

There are similarities between Islam's and Christianity's interpretation, of course, but the biggest difference in between the nature of Satan. In Islam, Satan was not a former angel, but he was Jinn, another celestial being, but unlike angels, they are not pure and have free will, too. About that millennialism theme, there are similarities, too. Islam accepts Jesus as Messiah, but as a human prophet of God, not the god himself. There will be a time, when he will come back as Messiah, save the believers, the world enters a last golden age before the Doomsday. There are Signs, like seven seals, for the big Apocalypse day, world is becoming evil and evil each day is one of them. It's an isteresting topic, you can make a video about that Doomsday in different religions.
For example, in bible, Gabriel will blow the trumphet, yet there is a different Archangel for that in Islam, Israfil, - could be said Raphael, maybe.- Gabriel in Islam is responsible with communication between the God and prophets.

Satan is not in hell he has not seen hell nor has been anywhere near hell. Satan is the Prince of the air he Presides in the stratosphere and thniatmosphere this is why the scripture says he can go back-and-forth to heaven to talk to God as in the scripture states with job. Satan will be kicked out of the atmosphere when Jesus Kick him out of heaven. When the rapture happens this is when satan will be bound to the Earth knowing that he has but a short time.

Satan is not yet cast into Hell. The appointed time is told in Revelation chapter 13.
When The Son of God walked on earth, we see in the Gospel accounts that the demons called out to Jesus
"What do you want with us, Son of The Most High? Have you come to judge us before the APPOINTED TIME?"
Hint: watch Israel and the Islamic nations and you will understand this 4000year ancient war for the souls of men.

Everything Abrahamic is fictional and taken from something else. Unfortunately westerners don't understand the concept of metaphorical truth and think these things are literal and they are not

@-Thauma- I think if both groups embraced metaphorical truth they would learn the lessons and probably be more at peace with themselves and those around. When you take the myth literal the magic of the moral is not understood. It's a shame because there are so many who claim to practice a faith yet don't fully understand how faith and the mind work. Alot of good people get lost and it's unfortunate.

I'll keep it short. Lucifer is not in hell for it's a prison and only one that I know of escaped it, Jonah, for he truly repented. Lucifer is in 2nd Heaven and has Dominion over Earth due to Eve giving it to him, for it was Adam who gave it to her. Plus the majority of Dante's Inferno is bunk.
