Yet another very interesting subject from ICM
While the Mistel 1 was originally intended as an anti-shipping weapon, it's best use was to demolish River Bridges in the path of Russian advances in 1944/45. (Bridges don't move very much, you see.) It was realised quite early in testing that the whole thing was a 'bit of a pig to fly' and that hitting any moving target (even a ship) would be extremely difficult, probably bordering on miraculous... It was also very good at destroying fixed fortifications like bunkers. But it needed fighters escorting it to the target. Dragon did a 1/48 Mistel 3 kit, which used a Ju-88G and a Fw-190A or F as the control. I have that one in my stash and look forwards to getting one of these, also. The Dragon kit could be built as a Trainer (With a manned cockpit in the bomber) and also and had 2 different bomb noses.) This ICM Mistel 1 used a Junkers 88A and a Messerschmitt Bf109F-2 or F-4. Some others MAY have used a 109G-2 or G-4.
BTW the bombers used were what the Americans called "War Weary" - or older airframes that had seen a LOT of use and their safety was marginal. War is very hard on equipment. The same applied to the 109Fs used - they were taken from advanced trainer units.
The split crosses are for the Ju 88's dive brakes (not generally fitted to Mistel aircraft), as well as tail swastikas, usually replaced by a number.
The Ju 88 was powered by Jumo211s, 213s or BMW 801 radials. The Bf 109F WAS powered by a DB 601.
Great review. The Luftwaffe had a plan to use the Mistel against the British fleet at Scarpa Flow but never carried it out. As I understand it the nose was designed to penetrate the armor on a battleship by creating a plasma jet, like modern anti-tank munitions. If I remember correctly, Johnny Johnson mentions one of these being used against an RAF airfield in Holland or Germany during the campaign into Germany. In a universe far away and long ago I made a 1/72 Mistel with a Frog Bf 109F and a Ju 88, either Frog or Airfix but that was before the Rebel Alliance. Thanks for the review.
Thanks Joe! Yes I think it was effectively a giant Panzerfaust charge...
I think the ICM BF 109F-4 kit is a 2006 moulding which is probably why it is showing its age, Peter. It’s alright after a bit of cleanup but easy enough to swap out for a recent kit if anyone wants to do that. This Mistel boxing is on my want list. 😊👍🏻
.....чтооо сказать-оооотличный набор!.....то-ли еще будет ребятаааа......
Great review and a interesting subject although I thought the presentation a touch 'agricultural'.... no..... 'horticultural' 😂
I love the external sounds, usually pigeons or a blackbird I have noted in the past 👍
Words have been spoken between me and neighbour...😤 ...next time they will warn me in advance. 🫣
@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab 😂😂 mate I thought it was amusing and could feel your pain/annoyance!
Bloomin neighbours!!
ICM list a few 1/48 ju 88 models. Would quite like build a JU88 if the moulding is as good as that
The Ju-88 moulding isn't that new, apart from the Nose Bomb and struts to convert it to a Mistel. It was first released in 2015 with the equally nice Do-17. It still looks pretty good though. The He-111 came out a couple of years later. I think they do a pretty good job of extracting as much out of their kits with interesting new versions, unlike some kit manufacturers that just add a new decal sheet and sell it as a new kit.
Funny you mentioned Flash Gordon. Your neighbour sounds like he has one of his space ships
Lol! 😂
.....тооооо-лиииии еще будеттттт......
ICM should do some modern UA stuff soldiers im looking to buy already got the stugma and mine clear teams , grear revuew / kit : ).
So you can build a standard ju 88 mistel if you wish with or without a cockpit?
Yes indeed.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab They also have a fully glazed Mistel S1 on sale (kit 48101) which is the Trainer version. The parts are the same, just not including the nose bomb sprue, & with a different decal sheet. This one is a tiny bit more expensive (just £2) - but gives the option for both types. No brainer.
