A proper film, well acted , no CGI , no bs , swearing , its such a pity that real dramas and scripts never get made into films . Nowadays, they have to be commercially viable with big name stars to sell them. I don't like that modern films have to support a resume of the actors in the marketing blurb, just to get people to watch them. That in the selling of the modern film they have to mention the actor and what they previously starred in!!

Thx for the ad-free movie. I always liked most of those actors. Only thing bad about this film was "we were six days without water". Nonsense a person is incoherent by day two and dead by day three waterless in those conditions. This is one of the most common errors in film. THE WATER!!!

I am a 72 year-old woman ( John, my husband , died about 2 years ago). I was about 12 (in Galveston, Texas) , when I went to see Sandra Dee, in “A Summer Place”. It seems like yesterday. Perhaps the most memorable scene in that movie was when Richard Egan through the bra or girdle or corset out the window of the schooner that they were on at the time. The scenario was that Sandra Dee was playing Richard Eagan’s daughter. The mother of Sandra Dee, was trying to force Sandra Dee to wear this hardware (Sandra Dee’s opinion). Sandra Dee pleaded with her father, Richard Egan, to not force her to wear this hardware. The father took his daughter’s side against the mother because he, too, felt that the “mean” mother was just trying to suppress their daughter’s sexuality by flattening the daughter’s curves. To this day, I have always viewed the actress who played the mother, as a “mean”, “extremely prudish “ woman.

Great to watch a movie from start to end - without any commercials!
Jeff Chandler who plays Major Pike Yarnell is a real man's man, the shape of his face, the tone of his voice, very manly in every way.
Major Pike looks great in a uniform and a suit ... I don't know any man these days that wears pajamas to bed. LOL
But be as it may, the movie is certainly a sad one.for how the son was lost combined together with that of a toxic mother's love.

But remember Mary Astor led a life that no one else could’ve lived through. She basically had too many one night stands and one too many drinks . Was dragged into court over a child custody battle and of course they read a nasty little sex diary out loud in court. She led such a hard fast life that she did age a little faster than some of her lovely costars. She really was one talented actress.

thank you for this. A great movie. Mary Astor was a very sensitive person who had been through her share of difficulty and pain in life; you can see the sensitivity of her acting. I really love the books she wrote, novels and autobiographical work. Chandler is great here. Another person who was done wrong posthumously by someone who wanted to sell a book

Glad there is Jeff Chandler to look at! Re. Allyson, I always found her hard to look at. They never (or SHE never) compensated by letting her have long full sexy hair, be a blonde, or anything to help her not look like she was born in a shirtwaist dress. Instead she always appears on the huge screen with short hair pressed tight to her skull, curled in a little roll at the bottom, a perfect recipe for ugly and unsensual. I think she (and Jody Foster, LOL) among others prove you're either born to make it or you're not, that beauty, talent, brilliance, goodness, none of that can change our fate. Not that June Allyson wasn't a very decent actor, unlike Ms. J. Foster. I'd like anyone to name me one instance of Foster's ever being brilliant, or anything more than just barely adequate, if that, in any movie she was ever in. Anything she's done reasonably well, any ingenue could have done as well, and character actors could have done much better. Yet she's regarded as an industry god.
June Allyson looks better than usual in this, but her acting is dreadful. She seems to read her lines, and even seems to watch the other actors' lips move during scenes, like a child in a school play.

"A selfish, possessive mother is the squeaky hub around which turns a small wheel of conventional drama in "Stranger in My Arms," a Universal-International picture that came to the Odeon yesterday. And a peevish and snarling Mary Astor turns up in the role. The accompanying emotional rotation, which is conspicuously ponderous and slow, is flattering neither to Miss Astor nor to the common concept of Mom."

Mary Astor was an awesome actress. She was in a movie with Walter Huston that I’ve watched over n over. I think it was Dodsworth . Something like that. Anyway I loved it. Mary Astor had quite a bad reputation even with the courts taking her daughter from her. I guess she just like men 😂

Sandra Dee was my favorite. Too bad she married a man much older and lived such a sad life. She became an alcoholic and lost her standing in Hollywood. When they divorced she just drank that much more and became a hermit until the very end of her life when she then came out and did a few interviews. Sad.
