Poor Mary Astor was only 53 when she made this movie but has to refer to herself as 'an old woman'! She's only 11 years older than June Alyson who's playing the romantic lead. Times have changed hugely for women since then.
But remember Mary Astor led a life that no one else could’ve lived through. She basically had too many one night stands and one too many drinks . Was dragged into court over a child custody battle and of course they read a nasty little sex diary out loud in court. She led such a hard fast life that she did age a little faster than some of her lovely costars. She really was one talented actress.
thank you for this. A great movie. Mary Astor was a very sensitive person who had been through her share of difficulty and pain in life; you can see the sensitivity of her acting. I really love the books she wrote, novels and autobiographical work. Chandler is great here. Another person who was done wrong posthumously by someone who wanted to sell a book
Glad there is Jeff Chandler to look at! Re. Allyson, I always found her hard to look at. They never (or SHE never) compensated by letting her have long full sexy hair, be a blonde, or anything to help her not look like she was born in a shirtwaist dress. Instead she always appears on the huge screen with short hair pressed tight to her skull, curled in a little roll at the bottom, a perfect recipe for ugly and unsensual. I think she (and Jody Foster, LOL) among others prove you're either born to make it or you're not, that beauty, talent, brilliance, goodness, none of that can change our fate. Not that June Allyson wasn't a very decent actor, unlike Ms. J. Foster. I'd like anyone to name me one instance of Foster's ever being brilliant, or anything more than just barely adequate, if that, in any movie she was ever in. Anything she's done reasonably well, any ingenue could have done as well, and character actors could have done much better. Yet she's regarded as an industry god. June Allyson looks better than usual in this, but her acting is dreadful. She seems to read her lines, and even seems to watch the other actors' lips move during scenes, like a child in a school play.
"A selfish, possessive mother is the squeaky hub around which turns a small wheel of conventional drama in "Stranger in My Arms," a Universal-International picture that came to the Odeon yesterday. And a peevish and snarling Mary Astor turns up in the role. The accompanying emotional rotation, which is conspicuously ponderous and slow, is flattering neither to Miss Astor nor to the common concept of Mom."

Interesting turn of events at the very end. The selfish love of the mother and grandfather's greed contributed to Don's inability to sort out his life. Great acting from the entire cast. I enjoy the classics. ❤TCM Thank you
Jeff Chandler had a nightclub singing act around this time, I think. Not a bad singer....better actor, I think. He does a great job here. Sadly, he died 2 years later.
Thank you. An OK film. Was surprised to see Sandra Dee in it. Had thought I had seen all of her films. Jeff Chandler is extremely handsome. Haven't seen him in many films. June Allyson's voice is unique, and charming. But she, in this film at least, doesn't seem to have much appeal.
Sandra Dee was my favorite. Too bad she married a man much older and lived such a sad life. She became an alcoholic and lost her standing in Hollywood. When they divorced she just drank that much more and became a hermit until the very end of her life when she then came out and did a few interviews. Sad.

@@jackanthony976 Thank god. She is dreadful to watch and even more irritating to listen to.. Plus, she was a home wrecker.
Uggh! Horrid woman.
Thanks for the heads up👍🏼
The best actor in this film was Mary Astor! The rest were good but Mary was the most convincing. Great story. Thanks for posting! 👍 for the movie 👍👍for Mary Astor! 😎✌
Mary Astor was an awesome actress. She was in a movie with Walter Huston that I’ve watched over n over. I think it was Dodsworth . Something like that. Anyway I loved it. Mary Astor had quite a bad reputation even with the courts taking her daughter from her. I guess she just like men 😂
oh my god there are so many comments.almost 400.so ...im in luv too with jeff c.we like this kind of men voice attitude yeah.can t find him in real life.
This is one my favorite movies.
Excellent movie!
This was great!
Jeff Chandelier and Sandra Dee, two beautiful people and a great actor and actress. Jeff Chandelier gone too soon 😢 , and Sandra Dee, what a tragic life. 😢😢😢😢😢Addicted to pills 💊 and alcohol 🍺.
Charles Coburn-Must watch ASAP. Love to see who the co-stars are in films. Sometimes they make a movie great. Charles Coburn is at the top of my list.
Coburn was great indeed, so many great films. More the merrier and Louisa were a couple I enjoyed.
@@royboy9361 ''Damn the torpedoes ,full speed ahead''.'' Mr. Pendergast has no hair''. Louisa is one of my favorites too .Abel Burnside was a character .
Pike and the young lady (Pat) would have made a cute couple had she been a little older. Loved their chemistry!
Good one. Sometimes 'hero' is an empty title in many walks of life.
Interesting turn of events at the very end. The selfish love of the mother and grandfather's greed contributed to Don's inability to sort out his life. Great acting from the entire cast. I enjoy the classics.
❤TCM Thank you
Hey a very good movie..... Thanks for showing
Jeff Chandler had a nightclub singing act around this time, I think. Not a bad singer....better actor, I think. He does a great job here. Sadly, he died 2 years later.
Doug Case I read how he died very sad complications from back surgery. He is one of my favorite actors
I'm going back to watching people shoplift from ShopRite in Hoboken New Jersey. The Bronx New York
I had such a crush on Jeff Chandler! Loved this movie. Chris, thank you. I subbed and look forward to more from you.♡
FABULOUS, EXCITING AND UNBELIEVABLE ENDING.
Thank you.
Sad.
@@rubymcclain5078 Bobby Darin wasn't that much older than her. He was 24 when they married.
I thought it was good to see her in such a serious role, usually played more lighthearted roles.
😢Let me finish: no-one is entitled to cause pain not even during filming😢 because they suggested it was " normal "😢
Another film with the Helmut Kautner "Touch". Kautner was a German director who went back to Germany after this, and you can see touches in this that go back to his Wartime German films.
This guy was a real hunk. My my my
Super duper movie❤
I still love Jeff, he's still my favourite actor. I don't like any actor as much as I like Jeff, my favourite actor of all time!
June had a cool voice. That is what makes people the sexiest.
Fantastic amazing 😊❤️💯🇦🇺
I like Jeff chandler movies.. any movie he made. But it’s tough to take june allison’s gravel voice.
Great movie!
A good movie, and this was the first time seeing it. Thanks for posting! Has anyone come across the movie The Carpet Baggars? I would love to see it again.
