Joan Blondell was such an awesome actress. Her and Shelly Winters as they aged they gain weight. They didn't hide away from the world. They showed the world they were real women who also could have a career being older and a little heavier. I loved all their movies and television appearances when they were older with the weight. Darren McGavin is a good watch. Love the old woody station wagon. Had the bench seats that you could actually slide out the same side as the driver. Plenty of room.
From Wikipedia: "David Ross was an ex-convict, who spent six years in prison for a murder he did not commit, then became a private investigator in Los Angeles. Though he received a governor's pardon, he is constantly harassed by police partly for his alleged past crime and partly because he is a private eye. He only resorts to violence when forced to, and his carry pistol is a tiny .25-caliber semi-automatic. *Many of his cases involve eccentric Hollywood or Southern California types, with whom he copes in a bemused fashion.*" Sounds like a Jim Rockford prototype.
Great film. McGavin had "it", a real star that could suck the oxygen out of a room. Hypnotic and super talented. That the main players hold their own on the screen with him is a testament to them. From Blonell to the beautiful costar everybody shines. Super tight plot and terrific writing. Real old school entertainment that holds up. Fast paced and even a bit scary. Thanks so much! Much love.😊
This is from a series called The Outsider which ran for one season 1968-69. Created by Roy Huggins who is using an alias here of John Thomas James in the credits.
It's two episodes of The Outsider, edited later into a movie-of-the-week. That's why it seems confusing, with scenes going back and forth between the cases of the missing child and the tell-all book. I think they did alright splicing it together like that. I kept thinking I recognized the teenager Marcie - turns out she played the wife of astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff. It was a difficult role, portraying a woman thrust into the limelight while suffering from a debilitating speech impediment. Both Marcie the teenager and Annie Glenn had the same wide-eyed look of actress Mary Jo Kennedy (who is the real-life mom of Zooey & Emily Deschanel). I really enjoyed this movie.
The style of 40s and 50s film noir set in the psychedelic late 60s. Love it! Whitney Blake of "Hazel" fame as Judy and Jean Carson, one of the "Fun Girls," from The Andy Griffith Show.
From the moment he spoke two or three words I knew it was Darren McGavin taking. His voice is so distinctive. I had a good friend kind of like that. I fell in love with his voice. He’s dead now and I wish that I had a recording of his voice.
