  • Shadow of fear 1954
Dir: Rogell Cast: M Freeman, J Kent, M Reed
This is B-film thriller from the UK which was directed by an American and the female lead is American. It was quite common in those days to have Americans playing in British films. Therefore, some oversight how you can lose your British accent after spending a few years at a University in California as the young heroine returns to her evil stepmother in the UK. The main reason for seeing the film is Jean Kent playing that evil role with aplomb. Otherwise trying to be like a Hitchcock film but never achieving it. Still always nice to see a small village in Old England from 1950’s. I think the copyright of the film has expired and no studio company has made a DVD but will take it down if I am mistaken.

Everybody here is Commenting on how nice that society was 'back then'. Society could still be like that 'right now', but the wrong people have controlled what happens and other wrong people have moved in. It is people and not 'the times' that changes society for the better or for the worse. And today we are living in a nightmare.

This is a movie not real life. People always want to live and believe in fantasy. If we only behaved, dressed etc like the movies or TV, humans are gullible as well as stupid. 35:40

@leelarson107 ~ "The people" and "the times"...what's the difference? They're actually one in the same. It's the people that make "the times" what they are. Why must you split hairs? Are you just trying to be argumentative toward other commenters for the fun of it?

The stepmother was perfection,as evil itself.
From her voice, two faced behavior with others,to her face in the light, she was the ultimate devil in an angels outfit.
    Masterfully,done.

Just like someone I know, a secretary from the 50s that uses hair, makeup clothing to look wealthy in her cement castle, only approves of wealthy friends (even at mass) let her kids wear a key a round their neck to come home to an empty house, while she worked and saved all her checks for retirement-housekeepers kept up her house. She was not nice to the staff cleaning her home.

Bucket loads of charm & pleasantries from characters of a bygone era. Even the man at the station saluted as the lady drove off. I've always liked the hand crafted models, that were then animated for realistic effect. For example: The car on the cliff & the boat on the rocks.

Mona Freeman actually was very well known, she was obviously American, worked in films and TV mostly in the 50s. She frequently played much younger characters.
Jean Kent was a versatile & popular actress who in the early 50s was listed in the top 10 British box office stars for several years, she later did tv.
These 2 women were only 5 years apart in age.
      Kent: 1921-2013
      Freeman: 1926-2014
These women were not 'unknowns', after 50 years though only film buffs probably recognize them.

They overdid it here. What more often happens is that doctors, family or friends at least pretend to have an open mind about the possibility that you're being targeted. Here, they're ridiculously blind and closed-minded and obvious about it. As one who has been victimized in a similar fashion, my advice to other victims is to drop those people from your list of potential allies and add them to the list of threats. Their minds are closed. Unwittingly, they can increase or complete the damage being inflicted by your tormentor. Seek help ONLY from people who believe you entirely or people you implicitly trust to be on your side and who are determined to find the truth, even if they might have some doubts.

Under the law there and in nearly every jurisdiction elsewhere, an evil widow or widower who murders the spouse is not entitled to any real property or any other assets under a will nor to any dower or curtsey share of any kind. Moreover, also under intestate ( no will ) law situations, the evil cold blooded murdering witch would not be able to get even a pence.
In short, a really happy ending here in that the daughter gets everything under the will INCLUDING the house and other assets the deceased left to her. The only housing the evil monster is going to get is life in prisonment without the possibility of parole. She will rot there for her double murders. Now THAT is a real happy ending folks. Justice.
