I grew up in my Grandparents house , am 71yrs. and still there. Went to London in 60s to college , got married and 3 lovely kids to boot. Early 90s separated and eventually divorced . My Grandparents were together for 65yrs. As a kid I never saw them hug or touch one another . I have been through all the emotions this film portrays !. Marvelous acting , heart-rending!!. Thanks all. Dave

Her happiness was built on memories instead of making happiness her current state.
It’s easy to get entangled by what has been and becoming comfortable even when we’ve outgrown a situation.
    Adored this movie.

I feel sorry for her. I don't know about the dates back than. I guess it was more acceptable for a man to cheat. She was committed to having a family. Sad to see that she didn't accept the truth. The kids already knew. It sucks we cannot go back and get our looks back. Whatever happened to for better or for worse. The husband selfish.

You know how hard it is to play an ordinary woman in an extraordinary way? Very few women can play drab, dumpy, slightly pathetic or unimpressive and keep you riveted and spellbound by the character they create. Shirley Booth has done it more than once in film, as she turns an every day woman into a tragic figure of Greek or Shakespearian proportions consistent with the best of modern drama. There are hundreds of thousands of women who endure years of suffering with heroic stoicism and Booth brings them to life better than any other actress of her era.

Brian Turner , Shirley Booth was one of the all time premier actresses of film ,theater and television. In later years she was type cast as this character, due to the fact she was brilliant playing it....even her voice has that unique, matronly tembre to it. When a film plays like a good book reads, you know its something special.

Your present is your present because of everything you have done (or not done) in your past. The older you get, the more that is true. If you get things wrong, as you go through life, the older you get the unhappier you feel, because all you have is bad memories. And if you can avoid thinking of your memories in the daytime, they still come and haunt you like daemons in your sleep. It’s horrible.

I loved this movie so much, I admire people who haven’t become hard and bitter when they have been hurt. There is a purity of spirit about them. I try to be more like these type of people because it is a strength of character that I don’t have. When I am hurt, my first instinct is to lash out, which hasn’t served me well at all. I take that hurt and pull it deep down leaving me bitter and cynical, and believe me, it does not work. Yes I really admire people like this. And before you say it, I know it’s a movie, but the story line was phenomenal. 💕💕💕

Right Keith, this comes across very slow but it kept building up with this constant rejection of reality Mama /Shirley Booth really never grew up after so many years of marriage not suspecting anything. And for some time now she's only hoping what she was hearing is just vicious rumors, they only happens to other families. Always being a Pollyanna thinking that Jackie's nights out was only for business. Oh long were being drawn to watching this how it escalated to a catastrophe for Jack that loose woman of his.. And if they survived and got married Jack's sperm would probably be way beyond its prime to spawn healthy children. So I suppose this accident was a sort of mercy killing to prevent another uneventful marriage for Jackie to live with a child would be disabled. That would really get his goat wouldn't it.. We hear some famous people who had disabled children always resented them.and were very cruel to their children like Charles Lindbergh and Chris Benet. If that happened when Jackie and that floozy got married Jackie looks like the type that a disabled child would only keep him down from having fun in his life... And this blank stare expressions of Shirley Booth who is slowly processing all this seems to be telling us she doesn't want any of this to be happening therefore she always seems to be and never growing up stage and living in the Here and Now.. a lot of us are like this l guees. She was so easy to hurt for

That is a great scene, between two actresses who were outstanding in William Inge plays in the 1950s. Shirley Booth had played Lola Delaney in COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (also directed by Daniel Mann) on the Broadway stage and in the movie, and Eileen Heckart had played Rosemary Sidney in PICNIC and Lottie Lacey in THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS on Broadway. Imagine her and Teresa Wright (as Cora Flood) in their great scene late in Act II of that last play!

Some take-aways for me from this poignant picture so masterfully presented by those in the scenes and behind: Time is fleeting ... family members are for sharing, helping, & encouraging ... friendships can be misleading ... marriages need continual nurturing, forgiving, listening, & loving ... spousal lying & cheating is as horrible as physically beating ... sexual acts can lead to hurting & devaluing ... life is meant for praying, learning, improving, and active caring ... the past is fine for recalling as long as it's kept from overshadowing ... one's death may occur without any warning ... hot spells help us better appreciate the blessings of cool breezes, cloudiness, and raining.
