You know how hard it is to play an ordinary woman in an extraordinary way? Very few women can play drab, dumpy, slightly pathetic or unimpressive and keep you riveted and spellbound by the character they create. Shirley Booth has done it more than once in film, as she turns an every day woman into a tragic figure of Greek or Shakespearian proportions consistent with the best of modern drama. There are hundreds of thousands of women who endure years of suffering with heroic stoicism and Booth brings them to life better than any other actress of her era.
Brian Turner , Shirley Booth was one of the all time premier actresses of film ,theater and television. In later years she was type cast as this character, due to the fact she was brilliant playing it....even her voice has that unique, matronly tembre to it. When a film plays like a good book reads, you know its something special.
Shirley Booth embodies her characters. Could have me in tears as a child with the emotion of her performances. I'm 64 now, and I'm so glad to see this. Thanks!

I loved this movie so much, I admire people who haven’t become hard and bitter when they have been hurt. There is a purity of spirit about them. I try to be more like these type of people because it is a strength of character that I don’t have. When I am hurt, my first instinct is to lash out, which hasn’t served me well at all. I take that hurt and pull it deep down leaving me bitter and cynical, and believe me, it does not work. Yes I really admire people like this. And before you say it, I know it’s a movie, but the story line was phenomenal. 💕💕💕
Don't be hard on yourself. Not everyone has the same temperament. For most people it takes years to adjust to the pain of adultery, or other forms of abuse.
I watched this with my mother as a junior high school student, I felt this lady's pain and longing... I have never forgotten the place "New Paris" In my imagination it was perfect as it must have been to her until I saw it. I wonder how many of us have a "New Paris" or a prison of exaggerated memories. Great Film.
I still love her in Hazel. Shirley took top billing over Shirley McClan. Anthony Quinn‘s performance was so natural he made his part look so easy to play. These actors were in top rated movies for years. I have to admit it You don’t see acting like this anymore. Love the show.
That's Hazel yes wow I never seen her; acting any other films love her..recognize her distinctive voice..thanks.yes 45 is not old. Iam 67...ancient. fossil. Hahaha.

Mr. Chris: thank you for bringing us One of the Best Films, ever made, with the best actors ever made the theater or the big screen. These actors are my absolute favorites. A uniquely anecdotal portrayal of the harsh realities and travails of personal and family lives. The delusions, diversions and inner and outward conflicts involving the passage of time are also well characterized. The last several minutes of the movie were quite sobering. Thumbs Up and thanks for the upload.
Right Keith, this comes across very slow but it kept building up with this constant rejection of reality Mama /Shirley Booth really never grew up after so many years of marriage not suspecting anything. And for some time now she's only hoping what she was hearing is just vicious rumors, they only happens to other families. Always being a Pollyanna thinking that Jackie's nights out was only for business. Oh long were being drawn to watching this how it escalated to a catastrophe for Jack that loose woman of his.. And if they survived and got married Jack's sperm would probably be way beyond its prime to spawn healthy children. So I suppose this accident was a sort of mercy killing to prevent another uneventful marriage for Jackie to live with a child would be disabled. That would really get his goat wouldn't it.. We hear some famous people who had disabled children always resented them.and were very cruel to their children like Charles Lindbergh and Chris Benet. If that happened when Jackie and that floozy got married Jackie looks like the type that a disabled child would only keep him down from having fun in his life... And this blank stare expressions of Shirley Booth who is slowly processing all this seems to be telling us she doesn't want any of this to be happening therefore she always seems to be and never growing up stage and living in the Here and Now.. a lot of us are like this l guees. She was so easy to hurt for
Same here! Glad I watched it through. It was very sweet and always great acting , these black & white movies Never knew anything of Ms. Booth nor Mr. Quinn. I usually watch these movies by actors , actresses I love
Reading through the comments, I am tickled to see so much admiration for the great Shirley Booth. Anthony Quinn, Eileen Heckart, Shirley McClain, Earl Holliman. This cast turned a human drama into an utterly memorable experience. 💙👏
Jane Deadlock It's pretty much the same thing. 1 husband, an alcoholic the other one, a cheater, but, she plays the same needy, time traveling, 🏡 wife.

Oh, that scene with Eileen Heckart and Shirley Booth--learning how to drink and smoke is priceless. You can tell their laughter was genuine. It would be hard to get through a scene like that without laughing. I bet they loved doing that scene.
That is a great scene, between two actresses who were outstanding in William Inge plays in the 1950s. Shirley Booth had played Lola Delaney in COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (also directed by Daniel Mann) on the Broadway stage and in the movie, and Eileen Heckart had played Rosemary Sidney in PICNIC and Lottie Lacey in THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS on Broadway. Imagine her and Teresa Wright (as Cora Flood) in their great scene late in Act II of that last play!
Did anyone hear what he screamed, just before he crashed, Hey Momma, and right before he left his wife, he told her, that he wasnt a child!! How fitting, just priceless! Good writing, and Direction.
he yelled MA MA, his last thoughts were of his wife whom he called mama. he was never going to be happy anyway in that situation, 10 years down the road that young woman would have been out the door, while putting him in a nursing home someplace, especially if he didn't have any money....
I've seen women very desperate like that and I wanted to kick them in the ass and hug them at the same time... Like STOP, SNAP OUT OF IT!! 💔💔 the man they're so desperate for is laughing at them oh, and they can't see that?
A very touching and poignant film. I LOVE Shirley Booth! What a wonderful actress! Being from the South, the story resonates deep within me. The whole cast was wonderful. I wish that we had more movies like this in the here and now, but, alas, that time period is gone forever. Sigh...
Shirley Booth could really wring your heart! She was excellent! I enjoyed seeing Eileen Heckart again. I had only seen her in The Bad Seed. Thanks for the upload.
You have so many gems that slipped between the cracks of my cinema viewing over the years; when I was ill for a long while all I could do was watch channels like TCM to take my mind off my situation and I thought I'd established a fairly wide ranging knowledge of American film. That said, I am running across so many obscure titles that thrill me more with each new discovery. I envy your library, Chris. Thanks ever so much for sharing.
It is such great fun discovering good ole Hollywood Black & White movies. With that being said....since I was about 8 years old......I have been watching, growing up with and enjoying these cinematic gems. But...it is such great fun to happen upon a new one that I had not seen before; and the selections are vast.

Excellent movie Chris. Am a fan of Tennesse Williams' books and to see this was great. Yes Mr. Williams stories are sad yet so surreal. Thanks for sharing. TCM eat your heart out
Some take-aways for me from this poignant picture so masterfully presented by those in the scenes and behind: Time is fleeting ... family members are for sharing, helping, & encouraging ... friendships can be misleading ... marriages need continual nurturing, forgiving, listening, & loving ... spousal lying & cheating is as horrible as physically beating ... sexual acts can lead to hurting & devaluing ... life is meant for praying, learning, improving, and active caring ... the past is fine for recalling as long as it's kept from overshadowing ... one's death may occur without any warning ... hot spells help us better appreciate the blessings of cool breezes, cloudiness, and raining. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for posting!
Exquisitely crafted and resonant with a William Inge or Clifford Odets vibe, yet also reminiscent of The Trip to Bountiful with the wonderful female protagonist played skillfully by Shirley Booth who sadly always longs to return to the one place in life that held the sweetest, most special memories. As far as casting goes, this was also top notch, and the story just made me cry. A terrific piece of mid-century American cinema. A+

Shirley Booth-- a magnificent actress. Probably one of the best .

@@gj.burchallburchall5551 What a petty comment.
Shirley Booth was one of the best actresses ever.
watch her every morning on Hazel Love her
@@forestre59 What channel is that? I miss watching Hazel too. Is it 'Dish'?
i know you've seen "come back little sheba" one of my favorites
If playing Hazel in every part she ever had is great acting, I guess.
Really one o the best little films I've seen on UA-cam for a while, the acting, writing, directing all great, thanks Chris Johnson!
It was very sweet and always great acting , these black & white movies
Never knew anything of Ms. Booth nor Mr. Quinn. I usually watch these movies by actors , actresses I love
I ended up enjoying it.
because Ms. MacLaine was starting in it.
starring in it...
Keith is this a perfect little gem or what
Reading through the comments, I am tickled to see so much admiration for the great Shirley Booth.
Anthony Quinn, Eileen Heckart, Shirley McClain, Earl Holliman. This cast turned a human drama into an utterly memorable experience. 💙👏
Shirley MacLaine looks so young and gorgeous. And that hairstyle on her 💜
@roger johnson Apparently, you've chosen to be a stark raving loony. That's... special.
@@mysterysurf4554 lol.. roger's horns and trident are showing... I'm surprised that he goes out in public (or does he?)
@Rubber Soul Have you seen her in The Apartment ?
Excellent movie. Shirley Booth is wonderful.
Terrific acting. The kitchen scene with mama and her friend is hilarious.
Shirley Booth was fantastic in this.
Thank you for the upload.
This movie in its day was called a kitchen sink drama.
Shirley Booth is on the level of Sarah Bernhardt and Laurette Taylor, flawless!
No one could play heartless bastard better than Anthony Quinn. And Shirley Booth did well at playing the perfect victim in more than one film.
lemon chiffon
It reminds me of “ Come Back Little Sheba”
Jane Deadlock
It's pretty much the same thing. 1 husband, an alcoholic
the other one, a cheater, but, she plays the same needy, time traveling, 🏡 wife.
She had some large rose tinted glasses. Always smoothing things over and making nice.
Oh yeah, Anthony Quinn player the supreme DICK. I suspect it was so in real life.
Yea ever see la strata ? He excels as an asshole
they say, if you play with fire, you might get burned...jack got lit💥💣🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wonderful movie..Shirley Booth's acting seemed as though she was not acting at all! Flawless performance, I throughly enjoyed watching this video, thanks for uploading it!
Thanks . Love these old movies! No commercials!👍😘
Kathleen Horner + watched the scene after your comment. Yep. Indeed! Their laughter is for real! Just can't fake that.

I liked Eileen Heckhart timming. Great performance.
@@KrisTina-dp5yj yes she was great! Loved her in 1958s The Bad Seed as Hortence Dagal. Cheers ✌
Did anyone hear what he screamed, just before he crashed, Hey Momma, and right before he left his wife, he told her, that he wasnt a child!! How fitting, just priceless! Good writing, and Direction.
I thought he was calling his wife in those last few seconds not his mother.
@@@santinowilliams693; He called his wife 'Momma', so yes - he was calling for his wife.
He said "Alma" his wife's name.
@@2jmeyer
He said mama not alma. That doesn't even sound the same
he yelled MA MA, his last thoughts were of his wife whom he called mama. he was never going to be happy anyway in that situation, 10 years down the road that young woman would have been out the door, while putting him in a nursing home someplace, especially if he didn't have any money....
Never beg anyone to be with you.
Beg all you want! Just don't take yourself serious.

I've seen women very desperate like that and I wanted to kick them in the ass and hug them at the same time... Like STOP, SNAP OUT OF IT!! 💔💔 the man they're so desperate for is laughing at them oh, and they can't see that?
Yeah...I tried it to bitter ends...
A very touching and poignant film. I LOVE Shirley Booth! What a wonderful actress! Being from the South, the story resonates deep within me. The whole cast was wonderful. I wish that we had more movies like this in the here and now, but, alas, that time period is gone forever. Sigh...
Nothing can beat these old classics. I thought this was a really great movie. Worth the watching...I give it a 10/10. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up.
Shirley Booth could really wring your heart! She was excellent! I enjoyed seeing Eileen Heckart again. I had only seen her in The Bad Seed. Thanks for the upload.
Oh no! You've been missing a great actress!
She was also Mary Richards aunt, on the mtm show.
I prefer bourbon…but anything’ll do
Brilliant...so moving, such incredible acting.
Great story, great acting !
Love old movies...this one hit a little too close to home...lots of raw emotion both on screen and personally. Thank you for sharing

Charity West: Sad that all memories of the Fifties were Not good. For one thing, women had little recourse when there was domestic violence...
For me too, that was my mum and dad and my brother and I trying to manage. Horrible. Great film. Not often Hollywood hits truth in such a raw fashion.

Never heard of this was until last year. A hidden gem.
I feel sorry for the mama and daughter .
Cynthia Lyman So glad and happy you’ve discovered these old films! I love them and understand being ill. These movies are comforting and interesting. The production, the costumes, the dialogue... so fun! Praying you are well and happy.
@crankylifter Thank you, l am, and l agree!
Wow! Great movie.
You can’t make someone love you. I have commented before on this movie and every time I see it I just want things to be good for her. She has such a precious soul.
No hut karma will get every single person wive or husband mean spurted people can their karma sooner or later. I’m told. I hope I get to see karma in my situation. It will be the sweetest revenge.
A wonderful classic movie....Thanks for sharing.
A gem that includes Shirley and Shirley.! Booth and MacLaine!
Yes - were they related ?
Shirley Booth is one of my favorite ole School actress. The movie Little Sheba was superb! Hazel was my favorite comedy back then! This movie character Ms Booth is playing kinda reminds me of her weak , timid and yes understanding role she played in that movie as well! Anthony Quinn is fantastic! Omg I love everything Shirley Maclean plays in from The Apartment - Steal Magnolia! And Terms of endearment! Thank you so much for the upload 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💎🍿🎥🍷👍🏾
Thank you for the upload. What a great actress Shirley Booth was.
What a great script and cast. Terrific movie.

Carstella Moore
Dream town, USA.
You should watch her in , Come Back Little Sheba" with Burt Lancaster as a recovering alcoholic husband.
Had me in absolute tears last half of the movie. Such a great one
You're very right Jessica. but the first half it's like a snowball of mostly denials rolling down the hill only to be met with a very sobering brick wall to crash into
Buddy reminds me very much of Martin Sheen .
at least her kids stood beside her
D T, yep! Rare these days! Smh
Brought back old hurts, but there comes a reckoning.....
Linda Gulley : this movie is so similar to my own life😥! It's amazing! As a movie it's wonderful!
Yes Linda. It does bring back old hurt's. However, we survive.
@@susanh.4733 So true ~
I’m watching it now. I’m assuming it was mental abuse? Is that what she endured ? I’m feeling that too. When is my day of reckoning ? Is it spousal abuse? I wish I could se the description but I gather I will have to watch the movie at this late hour. Tell me ladies is the karma that got him?
:::applause:::: Well, just a second before the crash, he yelled "momma!" Loved the movie. Second time to see it over the years
Shirley Booth was awesome in her days! Such a good actress!!
Really good movie!! Eileen Heckart was amazing. Love her. The whole cast. Great story.
Excellent movie Chris. Am a fan of Tennesse Williams' books and to see this was great. Yes Mr. Williams stories are sad yet so surreal. Thanks for sharing. TCM eat your heart out

This movie made me cry. All the actors and actresses were great, I just wish the husband had lived, sooo he could've seen how stupid he was🤔😊❤👽
This was an excellent movie. Brought tears to my eyes. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful dialogue and realistic story lines. It ought to touch some hearts who can relate to it. wherever they may be
