Hey thanks man! I'm in 8th grade and I just started throwing a few weeks ago. Our school doesn't put too much effort into coaching throwers, so I've gotten ALL of my training from you. Thanks to you, I ended up improving my PR by 24 ft. in 3 days (I got 114' 7" today). Thanks and good luck on your journey!
@@birdseyepeas9815 now I’m a junior in high school, and I’ve thrown 126 with the heavier discus. I also throw around 40 feet in shot. I think it could have been higher by now if not for covid cancelling my freshman season
To answer your question: I’m a second year thrower. Discus last year was dreadful. Doing better this year, but right now I’m trying to work on keeping my chest up throughout the throw. I drop my chest and then don’t get enough elevation on the throw
This actually helped. I no longer do the crunch because I’ve started spinning but I still wind up going down. Thank you for the tip on keeping it straight bro
Diving in as a masters thrower and I’m currently working on staying patient with my upper body to hold separation. Hard to fight the urge to throw with the upper and tough learning how to stay active with my right foot. Humbling and very enjoyable! Goal is 50m!
This is my 3rd year throwing. I’ve now been working on firing myself down the middle of the ring and keeping my left arm parallel to the ground. Thanks for the tips !
my first discus instructional and loved the sequence of body parts movement like punching in boxing, head initiates (dead giveaway for the opponent), hips, then back then finally shoulder ...
It's cool to see how so many sports are related. I guess that makes sense when we understand how the human body works to create power! Thanks for the comment!
John I am a 73 year old male. I was the high school discus coach at Mandeville High School. I getting back in shape to compete in the Senior Olympics . I get to throw the 1k for my age bracket. My son threw at Texas Tech, with Julian Wruck . All by students are making me throw, but I am looking forward to actually throwing. The meet is October 15 2022. My goal is a front throw of 100 ft. My son will not let me spin./ LOL Thanks for these good back to the basis throwing. Thanks Coach Smith
Well, bad technique is bad technique no matter who's telling you to do it. In the most respectful way possible, I would try to explain to your coach why crunching is not a good way to throw and explain what and why you want to change it.
The videos are great! My son has thrown for 3 years now and currently in 8th grade. He's hitting 112' but needs work on his spin. Since I'm not there to watch him practice enough it's hard helping him fine tune. I'm thinking that I want him to start back at basics with his power throw and 180 and hit the fundamentals . Hes resistant even though he knows his spin is far from adequate. I think this would help him in the long run. Thoughts? Also from Syracuse, Indiana here. Glad to see a Hoosier on here.
My biggest tissue is getting my left foot down at the front of the circle in the right spot while staying balanced. I always end up having my feet squared and then my throw will go right and it wont have as much torque as I want it to. Do you know how I can try to fix that.
Good question. My guess is that your foot in the middle needs to turn more. Once it makes contact with the ground it needs to start turning and it needs to keep turning all the way until the discus leaves your hand.
Working one of my athletes, he starts off the back of the ring with his left shoulder causing him for fall in. Im having him focus on keeping his left arm inside his left arm as long as he can through out the throw
Yes, that is a good place to start. Also have him keep his left foot turning out of the back all the way until it faces the throwing sector. This will help him keep his left arm inside his left leg/knee.
It's difficult to see a transfer of power from the legs coming from a turning and rotation of the hips. You get that in baseball, but you've also got a shift in weight. I guess when we're just isolating the last part of the throw, though, it's tough to see the first couple of parts come into play and maybe provide that transference we can't see as easily in the last part, though.
I always seem to do bad on getting my body to turn fully around before I get into the the power position, getting my left foot around and getting my body to spin around. Any tips?
Two points- attacking the front of the circle and deciding on a reverse. I throw but I don't feel like I'm "gripping and ripping it" at the front but just throwing it. Sometimes I can feel a powerful surge or whip at the release and it sails (I know it's done well because I feel it in my elbow) but most times I just throw. Second point is my reverse- most throwers either non-reverse or full reverse. For some reason I do neither. After I throw, I continue pivoting on my left leg, swinging my right leg around and back into the circle. I don't know if it's a good way to do it or not.
I know what you are talking about with the reverse. I do that occasionally in practice. It means that you don't fully "block" at the front. But I wouldn't worry to much about it. just keep putting your left foot down hard and fast at the front and the reverse will take care of itself. 👍
Whenever I throw discuss instead of going straight it flip and flip and then fall on the ground. What can I do to make it straight? I think I release the discuss in a wrong way.
Hello sir iam from small village of India I started throwing in 2019oct but due to leg injury I was at home for 4months after that lockdown begin .know I started again in this 2021 iam confuse that what schedule i should follow so please make a video on a proper schedule for high school thrower
Questions I make all theese mistake the coach at my school says that we half to bend like that to get the disk to go farthet but when I throw the disk his way I mess up every time and only hit between 50 and 60 I know I can do better than that. So here is my question how do I fix all my mistake if I have been doing it wrong for two years? Plus to help my teammates get better to.
You can fix old habits. Some people may say it's not possible, but I disagree. If you continue to learn about throwing and practice regularly while trying to improve your technique, you will build new habits and throw farther. I believe you can make the changes you need to!!! 💪
Answer to the question of the day😁: - 'am trying to avoid jumping in the middle of the cirlce and trying to prevent upperbody lead in the middle. Tried too many drills but still as it is😐😓😓😶
Thanks for the comment! And I understand how you feel. It can take a long time to see progress in your technique. Just promise yourself that you'll keeping working on it. I believe you will figure it out 💪
Hey, that's a pretty common problem for us discus throwers. Trying keeping your chest up in a straight line over your hips for the entire throw. When your upper body is directly over your lower body you will be on balance and will scratch less. 👍
Actually I have a video of my last track meet on my UA-cam. If you have a second to watch the video and comment how I could improve I would greatly appreciate it. It starts off with my doing shot put my the last video segment is my discus
Wow, that’s a ridiculous throw. 80 is still a good throw! The same thing happened to me 2 years ago when I was throwing 60 and someone threw 140. Keep up the hard work and you’ll be able to break 100! You got this!
I was only able to go to one meet last season (March 2020) and I managed to throw 95’6”. However, due to the pandemic, I haven’t thrown nearly as much but hopefully I’ll be able to break 100’ this season but I’m really rusty at the moment.

John my throwers are slipping in the ring because it has never been cleaned before. How do I clean the ring to make it non-slippery again?
You can scrub it with dish soap and water or in extreme cases you can clean it with Muriatic Acid
