  • If you have been looking for how to overseed your lawn in the spring, look no further than this step by step complete guide to spring overseeding! I discuss all you need to know and understand before seeding cool season lawns in the spring, as well as an easy to follow guide so you can seed like a pro and fix that ugly lawn. Straight to the overseeding steps at 4:40
If you have excess thatch you can certainly dethatch before seeding, and could also core aerate if you would like. Using a roller to press the seed into the ground is fine too if you happen to have one. As long as the seed gets to the soil layer, is covered by a thin layer of peat moss or something similar, you will be good.

One reminder is seed needs to touch soil...if you need to dethatch or aerate before seeding, that can help too. If the yard is thin like mine, put seed on and cover it with a light layer and you'll be good :)

How nice of that man to make that for you! It's wonderful and he should market them, if not already doing so. I reseeded my entire front yard by hand about 5 years ago. You know it's nice when the neighbors compliment it. 🙂 I plant only fescue and love it. Sadly, we have had sooooo many high winds in TX that it has mixed some bermuda (sp). I hate it because it's the last to get green and the first to get brown. I'm reseeding some areas, so I hope to get it back to "compliment" stage. 🙂 Those ended this year. My backyard is a work in progress because it is full of weeds, again, due to VERY high winds blowing at least 5 different kinds of weeds, and still has some occasional junk grass. I'm not a chemical person because of random feral cats, but I may have to rethink it. I've been using salt and vinegar and it works great, but they appear again before I blink an eye in March. Yours gives me a motive to continue. :) Thanks.

I've always had a thing for a nice lawn, have always had the nicest lawn on my street, but still wanted to up my game. I had never overseeded before so gave it a go about 10 days ago, including weed treatment and aeration. I'm definitely seeing much less weeds and that's HUGE, though I may need a second treatment in areas, and I'm definitely seeing new growth in the areas where the grass was a little thinner. But frankly it's hard to say if there's new growth in the lawn in general. I suspect that change is a little more subtle though, so will wait and see. But no weeds and growth in the thinner areas were my key objectives, so mission accomplished there. Love your vids, btw. Keep em comin!

    Thanks Ryan
Your methods do work,I live in the North East, unfortunately I did some lawn renovations last fall and I should looked out for the weather conditions, all the seeds that were planted were washed away,so I did a sloppy job reseeding, all I got as a result was weeds and empty spots, will have to kill the weeds and grass and start all over again in the fall but all n all your methods are the right way in establishing a nice looking lawn
    Thanks
    JK

I have waited 47 years but FINALLY purchased and home. I have been dying to care for a lawn, and this lawn will need some work. Dead patches, weeds growing in. It seems from this video that overseeing can help with that a lot. It shall be my first "major" lawn project. Sadly, from the advice here, I'll have to wait until September.
Great videos for a newbie like me.

I bought that pear moss spreader from Amazon, at little pricey but worth it if this is something you do regularly in your own yard or for a business. Very sturdy as well

This video was extremely informative. Thank you for creating it. So many clear and awesome tips! I just looked through your channel to see what video I can reference to get info on starting a lawn from literally dirt. We just moved into a new build on a 1.3 acre lot in a Canadian city near the border of Michigan. What video(s) would you recommend to make sure we start everything on the right foot? Thanks!!!

Very helpful! I think I'd try a large plastic or metal scoop to get the peat moss out of the bag.

Thank you for this video and many other that you’ve posted. I have warm season grass so everything you cover doesn’t really apply to me, but I appreciate the video nonetheless. You’re videos are always straight forward and informative. 👍🏾

Great video, subscribed. I have a severely patchy front lawn from honestly a general lack of maintenance (other than mowing) and the fact I redid my landscaping a few yrs back and never seeded where there used to be bushes and whatnot. I recently dethatched my front lawn and oddly enough it looks more patchy, but somehow better than before. My question is should I still use a weed and feed now, keep up general maintenance, and wait until fall to aerate and overseed? Since we are in the great plague of our time I can't really get to get the tools necessary to do it now anyway. I live in Wisconsin if that makes a difference. Thanks again!

That peat moss spreader is a great idea. I would like a 50 ft. tow behind one that I could mix moss and enriched soil down.

When I seed and temps rise I sometimes cover the lawn with a clear tarp during hot days.I live in New England. It hold in the moisture in and saves water.

Hey Ryan, watched your videos and I'm very impressed at your organization of everything from your explanation to how you list the products used... I will be attempting the overseeding in early Spring. I will be following your video and products used... I live in New York... which seed do you recommend?

Hey Ryan, I’ve been watching a ton of your content. I recently purchased my first home in Fl that’s like 30% zoysia, 30% weeds and 40% dirt lol. We have a large in ground garden and multiple fruit trees. I’m curious to know if you have any processes for the lawn using cleaner products? I didnt mind using most of these products in the past but I’m now eating a majority of my food from my property and didn’t like the idea of putting chemicals in the yard multiple times a year if I don’t have to. Any advice? Keep up the good work!
