How a pressure washer unloader valve works (with cut-away view)

- This video shows the unloader valve in a cut away of a 2700 psi Homelite Pressure Washer. After watching this video you may be able to get your pressure washer to build pressure again.
Please note: I am not a mechanic and I do not work on these things for a living. I’ve only worked on one pressure washer in my life and this video is the result of that. After watching this video you should know more or the same about pressure washers as me. So I’ll apologize in advance if I don’t know the answer to any questions.
Wish more ppl would make their videos like this. No long intro graphics, no bs small talk, just straight to the point
right on, these UA-cam videos are going to shit trying so hard to be professionals adding unnecessary explanations or excessive Tech talk, to the point and that's all...
Why does the pressure lease valve keep squirting water?
New pump
Agree. I was planning to type the very same but you already did. I love the videos that get to the point and are in detail. Even at the end as he explained the valve, I'm thinking, "ok, what way increases and decreases" then bam, he explained if more pressure, tighten spring.
Your pump sacrifice was not completely in vain. The cutaway visual helped me tremendously diagnose my own issues. Thanks for the video!
As was stated, love the detail and directness of the video. Thanks for helping me understand the functionality of this valve.
WOW!!!!! 5 years later and your knowledge is still saving the day and only took me 7-8 videos of people who, I don’t know or can’t say what their talking about but if I listened to half of them I would have purchased an entire new pump but thought, DAM I only have 2 hours on this $375 rig and it just can’t be the pump but then I found your video and BINGO!!!
Such an easy fix and will now know it until my dying day!!!!
God bless you brother 🙏🙏🙏
I have a Homelite 2200psi gas pressure washer that stopped working. There were no leaks in the pump but there was very low pressure. I took the pump apart and unstuck the little piston with a few taps from a screwdriver handle just like this video says. Put it back together and it now works perfect with full pressure. Thanks, you saved me the price of a new pump!
Very helpful. This video should be studied on how to make a DIY video. No long intro. No annoying graphics. The cut away pump was so helpful. You sir rock. Ty
You are now the Most Hated person on the list of repair shops... great video! God Bless!
UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.
Awesome! I wish I saw this a week ago, but better late than never. This needs to be number one in search results for power washer trouble shooting. Search result say to check this valve, but nowhere to explain how or why. All units seem to have this same assembly, a little attention here saves money and time! With this, you can buy rejects in yard sales and get em going to resell for $$$. Thank you Mr Morgan!
This is exactly what I'm looking for in a UA-cam "How To" video.
Thank you Sir. All I had to do was tighten that valve!? Repair shop wanted $150 to diagnose my issue of low pressure. Saved my life!!!
Thank you! I had no idea why my pump failed before I saw your video. You Saved me $$$
Thanks dude! You went above and beyond with the cutaway! Appreciate it
Guy saved me 70 bucks. Great video. Real easy to do once you know what to do. Thank you
God job with cutaway! Very informative!😊
Hey Corey! Thanks very much for taking the time to put this video out there for the rest of us. The cutaway pump was outstanding and the total disassembly of the uploader is exactly what's missing from every other video I watched on this problem. Thanks again and take good care.
I second that.
Hmmm V
Excellent video. Never saw a cut away not produced by a company to show their products. Thanks for the time you devoted.
Dude you rock! I appreciate you taking the time to mention this! Good lQQkin out! 🙏🏻✌🏼❤️
Thanks for posting this video. It got me up and going.
One other thing to mention, check the inlet water screen. Mine was completely clogged, so therefore it may have been part of my problem by not
Letting enough water pressure into the pump...thanks again. Rob in SC
Exactly what I needed!!! Worked perfectly and saved me a day's week and major headache. Thanks!!
Fantastic - that little device has caused me confusion until I watched your video!
Great video, and the cutaway pump section is a home run visual aid!
Brother to the Creator this Channel or that video the next line job that was to the point no-nonsense great job man thank you and I hope you continue to do more everyday
Nice video. You are the only one who shows the second inside piston!!!! I checked my unloader but didn’t check that! Hopefully you will save me from buying a new pump!!
You're the man! thank you for putting this info out there for all us.
just got a freeby from a guy at work. he said it shoots water, but only out the back! lol keep on brother!
I found this video looking for something else as most of us do. I thought this is going to be to complicated to follow. You engineered the hell out of that explanation to get a fact. That sir was awesome! I wish we had worked together back when. Thank you. I'm saving this
Thanks Cory I just picked up a used Briggs and this will help.
Thank you for the informative video. You saved me about $100.00. I was thinking about buying a new pump, but I fixed mine after watching your video. Much appreciated!!
RARE!! Corey, thank you for a rare video minus all the stuff we do not need. to the point, you explained the magic uncovered. love this!
Thank you very much for this. My pressure washer was driving me crazy not running right at full pressure and quitting every time you let off the trigger. This simple five minute fix fix all of my problems. Thanks again for the help. Great video.
Excellent! This is the missing puzzle piece. I couldn't find anything like this. Thank you for putting your explanation on UA-cam.
Thank you
It fixed my power washer watching your video
Thanks
Thank you...fixed my issue in less than a minute. Pulled it, tapped it on ground and replaced.
Much love to you!! I was ready to smash my pressure washer! Pin was stuck! Thank you so much!
Wow everything on the net regarding unloaders they breeze past them and never explain in detail. Thank you so much you just solved a ten year old mystery for me regarding my old Honda pressure washer. Finally an unloader fully taken apart and simply explained!
Ohhh nice now i know exactly what my actions towards the valve will do and how it works... Thank you good sir
Very good ..
Its nice to see a detailed video.. when you know what its supposed to do, and, what to look for, it makes diagnosing a lot easier.
Thanks
Thanks for putting that up. My unloaded valve was stuck and I didn’t understand what was going on.
Thank you so much! I will go take mine apart now! All the best to you and your loved ones!
You have just saved me a TON!!!!! of headaches....
Very helpful I had that exact problem with a used power washer along with gas shut off problem. All fixed for $6.00 a 3000 psi paid $5.00 for the machine. Thank you :)
thanks for the disassembly in cutaway old school
Great explanation! Many thanks Sir. Got my unloader freed up after your lesson. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, always like when someone can explain in detail and really appreciate the cut-away. Stay safe..
Excellent video. Very well done. To the point. No wasted time. Shows us everything we need to know.
Thanks yube77. I'm usually on a slow internet connections when I'm trying to follow a DIY video to fix something, so I try to keep my videos short and to the point.
Great contribution to the DIY'ers. Thank you for your effort to help us all.
Super Helpful. Thank you. The cutaway is the perfect way to show the situation. I will give this a try tomarrow.
Excellent video. Thank you for making the cut-away and explaining the valve operation.
WOW, thanks hard to find a video explain s thing like human... ha keep making videos I'll watch I'm always fixing or taking it apart because I'm to cheap to buy another one, or can't help but to know how it works good to see reverse engineer at work.
Hi, thanks for making and sharing this video. I understand how my pressure washer works. It helps me in understanding the problem of my washer. With some tightening and loosening of parts, my washer works normally again!!! Thanks, really appreciate it!! from Philippines.
Corey, the cut away and explanation helped me fix my PW. I would assume by all the comments it helped many others. My comment here can not truly show my appreciation. A huge thank you for an excellent video. I hope you made money on this video. I doubt that was your intention but, seriously would like to say thanks. " You the man Sir!".
Can I hire you to make every "How to" video that I need...lol. amazing video brother.
Thanks for the help. Was able to fix my pressure washer easily.
Thanks for the info and cut out demonstration.
Thanks for the video! Great explanation and demonstration. Your still helping people to this day! Thank you!
Thanks, I'll bet there's not another video like this in all of youtube land. Very helpful!
Thank you for video. The cut away is awesome
Thanks Corey! It's people like you, creating excellent videos like this, that make UA-cam a valuable place to find answers! Perfect explanation! This is what I was hoping to find to help me troubleshoot the problem I'm having with the pressure washer I picked up at a local garage sale.
Same here - picked one up from a sale site for free - it was destroyed inside from broken bearings, seized up valves and so on. Now just awaiting a new bearing being delivered and can rebuild and test. 160 bar pressure washer for the cost of a new bearing (£2.50) 👍🏻

Amazingly informative video. I was shown how to fix the unloader before but with everything else if you don't do it you forget. Video refreshed my memory and also gave me more indepth explanation. Thank you
Thank you. Right on the money, mine was on to tight. Nailed it and I’m back in business. Thanks buddy
Great description! I appreciate the insight.
Yep Corey, worked like a charm. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Mine was not pressuring up and I I did what you said to do and it worked out fine. Thanks
Thank you sir. The Internet can seem like such a crappy place and then you search and find something like this video that explains my problem clearly and simply and allows me to fix something. Bravo.
That is a great tutorial with the cutaway! Great job!
Damn, that was excellent! Thank you for taking the time to make that set up, it was extremely informative.
That’s what I thought and yet some people gave the vid a “thumbs down” LOL. Thanks for the feedback!
excellent video Mr. Corey! Thank you.
Great video !!! I did change the fluids on my electric washer presure pump and replaced one of the o rings. Now it runs like brand new. Subscribed !!!
Really appreciate the vid. Excellent info, clear and precise. Great work!
NOW THAT IS A HELPFUL VIDEO. I don't think you understand Corey what a relief it is to find a concise, brief and easy to follow self help video like yours among an ocean of prolific idiots. My hobby is dirt bikes and you best believe every banjo playing goober in the Appalachian Mountains that puts gas in an old motorcycle and it accidentally starts??!! That makes him a certified you tube master mechanic. Don't get me wrong-in the not too distant future- I WILL EVENTUALLY PERFORM OPEN HEART SURGERY using no more than 4 or 5 you tube self help videos.
Thank you!! Great video, very well explained. Feeling more confident to take mine apart
Your awesome! Thank you... You have no idea how much you posting this video helped me.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time! I'm working on mine and this is helpful. 🍻
Thanks for the tutorial.
Happy New Year.
My real problem then was no pressure but with water coming out. Then later, having enough pressure but the pump is not stopping even when the wand was released. Then I saw your video. That's really really, man.. Appreciate it.
Nice Video, thanks for taking the time to make the cut out view
Here is some knowledge. The device you're displaying is an integrated unloader, with dual-bypass. The small bypass is used to unload the pump until a certain pressure is reached. This makes it easier to start the pump/engine assembly. The large bypass is used to unload the pump when a certain pressure is reached. This stops run-away pressure and dramatically reduces wear on the pump seals, when not spraying. However, if left in this state for any length of time, temperature and wear increase. Always stop the pump if you're not spraying for more than a minute or two. Also, the unloader is not to be used as variable pressure adjustment. That's what different orifice-size tips are for.
Thank you, makes sense.
Can we somehow adjust the GPM though?
Abc Abc
So if the unloader was turn for more pressure and used as a variable to reduce the pressure ,Which is incorrect from your statement ...How would I return the unloader 'to the correct position
ivan90815 you close your eyes and pray to baby Jesus
Thanks a million for the cutaway visual!!!
Good Informative Vid. Thank you
YOU ARE THE MAN ! THANK YOU FOR THAT EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIVE DETAILED video !
Great video, super explanation, thanks to you an easy fix!
Excellent explanation ! Thank you for the effort !! I will tighten the spring mine looks just like this .. Water more water comes from open holes than before rebuild. It builds pressure but no enough as it once did..
excellent. this 3 min vid is a timer saver, money maker. thanx
Great educational video on water pumps! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time!
Easy fix and saved a lot of frustration and money. Thanks
Thank you!! I “inherited” a GC160 Honda powerwasher and pulled it out to try to get it going today. Did the basics. Pulled plug, checked for spark, cleared cylinder, squirt some fuel in cylinder and intake and she fired right up. Put water to her and she acted like she seized up. Quick search points to the unloader valve, which I had no idea about. I used it all day after I figured out that once I relieved pressure by pulling hose wand trigger, it would free up and start again. As long as I ran it and kept the trigger pulled it ran perfect. There were a few times it ran perfect intermittently and would stay running once I released trigger; but that was short lived. NOW I KNOW. I’ll check tomorrow and see if that is the culprit. I’d guess it was based on how rusted the pressure hose was (nearly rusted SHUT at the pump connection).
This is my plight! This is my support group!
I have this issue as well. Did you ever fix it and if so, what did you do? Thanks!
Any chance you fixed it? Also do you know the amount of oil in the pump?
Thank you very much for taking the time and investment for making the cutaway of the pump and the dissasembly, you are a great human being and your effort and commitment will be rewarded with blessings, greetings from Chihuahua, Mex.
Thanks Corey! Great video!
Great vid dude just great!! Helped me out tons!!
My friend you deserve a MEGA 👍
Great video! It not only solved the problem I was having with my Troy Built 260 power washer, but I now understand how pressure builds and releases. Thank you
Thanks for making this video. Short, to the point.
great video sir, this is just what i needed to see my washer has been playing up a bit, I will check this on my washer I only used it once and now it's not getting enough pressure.
a great explenation especially the view inside the assembly - thanks a lot
Thank you for this, Corey. Liked.
Nice video buddy I really do appreciate that now I know
